Task killer apps.  Yes or No?

I recently purchased my first smartphone, a Droid Razr, and have a question about task killer apps.
Several people have told me that I should install a task killer app.  They have recommended "Advanced Task Killer".  They claim that a task killer app is necessary to conserve memory and extend battery life.  But I have also read that many people claim that with current Android software, like Ice Cream Sandwich, task killers are completely unnecessary.  They say that Android takes care of memory management, and that there is almost no gain in battery life.
I don't know who to believe!  As a smartphone "newbie" I would appreciate more opinions on this.
Thank you!

You are not helping him by not giving him any particular reason for your recommendation against "task killer apps". He already has opinions favoring both sides. He wants to know the "WHY" behind your suggestion.
I gave them my experience. I felt I never needed to" kill" an application even during the android versions where many people were using them.
To the OP, there are many, many discussions already existing in this community forum where more information is discussed and debated on the merits of "task killers". A search would have yielded some of those including ones where both myself and other users much more knowledgeable about android have given their opinions and links to tech blogs with additional information. I would suggest going through those discussions.

  • Task Killer problem, please help !!

    hi all,
I downloaded the task killer app.
I clicked on it and and I saw a list of what I think are all programs on my phone.
I can either put checkmarks on selected apps, then a 'clear selected' button pops up Or a 'kill all' and then a message pops up that says :task koller, available memory 250 mb, 'confirm' ?
update:.........................Now, every time I am on my main screen of my phone, and I touch the 'task killer' it just stays on my home screen, it doesn't even go to task killer anymore.
Did I 'kill' the task killer ? lol !
What Task Killer app seems to work best for everyone and how do you use it properly?  I suppose I need to download another one asap.
Also....................how do I 'uninstal' an application (like the 1st task killer) once I no longer need it on my phone?
    Thank you

I was told by the moderator of Droid Forums to never use the Advance Task Manager. He said it uses more battery and would cause more problems than just letting the phone close the apps as is needed.  Just an FYI.
The problem is performance and battery power will suffer before the phone closes the apps as needed.
Android is a true multi-task mobile OS.  If you open a program then hit your home button, that program will still be left running in the background.  That means the resources it's using are still tied to it.

Its not my fault my phone number was used, it is how Verizon is setup between Forums/Community and My Verizon Wireless UserID and Passwords.  If I recall to register for the Forum/Community your pw can only be 6 characters, while my VZW is 10 characters long. Not true, I have the same 8 character password for both. I have offered the forum ideas on how to not allow a number to be entered, but as of now, they have not done anything with it.
And since I use Norton Internet Security 2011 along with Identity Safe/SafeWeb, not everything goes as planned.   I have over 25 yrs experience with PC's...and about a zillion usernames and passwords and about every site has something different about Usernames/ID can be and the same of passwords.
Then the other issue is that you cannot Delete a Forum/Community login account or change the UserID, in my case from the phone number to a text Username ID.  And Verizon Wireless allows you to log in your account with your phone number.
Also, as I went checking My Settings for the VZW Community, under Personal Profile > IM Screen Names > for ICQ, my phone number appears and how/why I have no idea.  And when I tried to remove it, Save Changes, it would automatically reappear.
So after about an hour on the phone with Verizon explaining my dilemma about the phone number and having read another post different topic by an Administrator of Verizon, I obviously missed something in the steps in registering for the VZ Forum/Community.
Not to mention you have a different pw for billing, pw for login to My VZW and somehow since I was logged in to My VZW already, which as I said you can use your phone number as a UserID, something now I see should not be allowed.I never thought about that, but phone description is not an auto filled area, it is strictly optional.
And so the End User, is left to fend for themselves and figure out how to unravel this issues, glitches by companies & their web sites.  I have/had the same problem with Qwest and why I now use Verizon, issues with SBC Global and now these issues with VZW.
Qwest offered Bundle & Save, so I had Wireless, Satellite and Internet...well just after I upgraded my Qwest wireless phone, Qwest decided to drop Wireless and left me with a new phone I could not do anything with and was allowing Qwest to flip over to Verizon.  Qwest Internet Service sucks big time, as my location does not allow fast internet service due to my location, as told me by one of their Tech making a house call.
So for a year I was paying for something I would never get, as Sales does not know what Tech's know.  However, Qwest keeps sending mail advertisements saying Up to 7Mbps, or Fiber Optic  Up to 20Mbps, key words are Up To, so if you are paying for 7Mbps and receiving 2.2 Mbps, that is consider Up to the 7, which the 2.2 is unstable and your connection drops frequently.  So the Tech downgraded me to 1.5Mbps, otherwise I would of had to pay dearly if I made the change breaking the contract.
So yes we live and learn, even at age 63...I can go on and on how HP, Kodak and others have ripped the consumer off, in this case me.  On my 5th system board for the HP dv6000 and now there is a class action lawsuit.
To little too late...Appreciate the reply and not much I can do about the number, once its out there its any ones and I only know that scenario and unwanted calls too well.  I have several e-mail accounts, am a webmaster with umpteen web sites, and work on & servicing computers, Internet, Networking...my first Smartphone HTC Incredible and not liking how it works...thanks again, appreciate your time in replying and pointing out a Big Mistake ha ha....DroidFireDoc

  • What does it happen if killing app then fast startup?

Ask this question dues to my app is very likely to crash if I kill the app  then restart it very fast.  My debugging shows that when you double click back button then kill app, you see app really disappear, in fact it is still running, needs some time to exit completely. Then if you start up it very fast, app will re-access original dying app, instead of launch a new process, then it will be very likely to crash.
It is not difficult to reproduce it on either device or simulator, the reason is my app running under heavy thread pool (C++ boost implementation), normally it will need some time to destroy the pool (waiting all working threads to join).
I am not sure whether it is system behavior? Does user need to wait for a few seconds after killing app?  Or how can I avoid it on application layer?  Thank you.

You've posted your question in the iPhoto for iOS forum, but iPhoto for iOS is not compatible with an iPod touch. Are you trying to "edit" an album in the the Photos application?

  • Apple's "FLASH KILLER" App

Will Apple (or someone) please make a Flash killer? Just as Final Cut Pro was a breathe of fresh air to the nonsense of Avid & Premiere, we need a simliar thing to happen to Adobe Flash.
    FLASH KILLER APP
    - A vector brush tool that's not like drawing with a tube of toothpaste. Professional content requires professional tools.
    - The ability both import and export between other applications & common formats seamlessly.
              - Ability to import and export layered files (PSD/TIF) between other apps, including layers within nested timelines.
Most workflows are circular with other apps, not linear.
    - HTML5 and SWF compatibility
    - An artist friendly interface (What pages was to MSword)
    - 3D compatibility
    - An artist friendly coding language (this is one of the only things Adobe Flash has gotten right).
    - Image Frame mode (option to see images in frames).
    - Storyboard Frames View mode (Ability to turn your timeline into a full screen storyboard. Can drag and drop frames where desired. Great for brainstorming and sketching something out beforehand, then stepping back to look at it during creation. Toggleable Timeline < > Storyboard Views. *Could add a slider to adjust how many frames it counts before making a new storyboard preview.
    - Smart Libary Pasting. In Flash you either get to keep the existing symbols, or replace them with new ones when pasting from one doc to another. In my experience, when you paste something you often want BOTH things in there. I'd definitely include that very basic option.
Anyone else? What do you wish Flash could do?

HTML5 support via iOS is extended yet again with an updated webkit in iOS 5.

  • Unable to kill apps, icons won't wiggle

Trying to kill apps; but, icons on bottom platform will not wiggle. Now, when I hold down "platform" buttons, x's in a black box will appear on random apps above platform - not all the apps, just a few here and there. Very weird. I have tried shutting down/re-booting several times; I have checked to make sure that none of my apps are paused anywher - short of that, is there anything else that I can do?
    Thanks!

btw, closing or "killing" those apps doesn't do anything, esp. wrt battery since you're not killing anything in the first place - they are not running apps.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4211
the list is only a list of recently used apps.
what apps can run in the background is by design - only native apple apps and a few 3rd party apps for music, gps etc. all others hibernate and do not run in the background.

I updated to new ios7 and now I'm not able to kill apps like in the earlier version of ios6.
Also, is there an app that automatically kills apps in the background after a while.

Double-click the Home button to bring up the app screen, then swipe upwards on the app.

None I know of. I don't believe that the software development kit would allow someone to write such an app.
    Regards.
Forum Tip: Since you're new here, you've probably not discovered the Search feature available on every Communities page, but next time, it might save you time (and everyone else from having to answer the same question multiple times) if you search a couple of ways for a topic, both in the relevant forums and in the Apple Knowledge Base before you post a question.

  • HT201365 On this new ios7 update how do I kill apps running in the background now? I used to be able to double tap the home button

On this new ios7 update how do I kill apps running in the background now? I used to be able to double tap the home button

Double tap the home button.  Slide the preview window upward.  You can do 2 at a time.
It's rarely useful or necessary to do this. Very few apps actually "run in the background" (such as audio streaming and navigation apps).  The vast majority are frozen and consume no resources.  The iOS manages memory for you to optimize running apps.

can't kill app using fast app switcher...help ?

Only a very few specifically designed Apps actually run in the background. Apps such as Music, turn by turn GPS etc. others are suspended when you push the home button or switch to a different App.

  • My choice for the killer app

I love my iPhone for a lot of reasons, but the killer app for me is google maps. I can go to any place
and then search for businesses. for example, I can search Apache Junction for RV parks, and then save them as contacts because they are already in the correct format. I just love that.

Yep, Google Maps is great... it was on lots of smartphones before the iPhone came along.
The latest version for other phones, which is supposedly coming to iPhone soon, has cell tower location built-in to at least help figure what neighborhood you're near, or possibly better.
Yet to me and others, its online search now pales a bit in comparison to the latest Live Search on Windows Mobile phones. On them, you just click a button and say "RV parks near Apache Junction, Arizona" and the list comes up to save, map or share. No typing necessary.

Double-tap the home button and then swipe UP on the app preview window...not the app icon but the preview window above the icon.

  • Why doesn't Apple develop a "Killer App" like Android

Why doesn't Apple develop a "Killer App" like Android to remove all apps with one touch rather than having to hit the "minus" on each app for removal?

If you think this is a "Killer App/Feature", tell Apple:

There is no one from Apple here.

  • Killing apps off the first iPad? is it possible?

I have the first iPad. Is there a way to kill apps running from the first iPad? or am I S.O.L.?

Tap the home button once. Then tap the home button twice and the recents tray will appear at the bottom of the screen. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the app that you want to close. Tap the home button twice.
Whether the apps are actually running or not - that is how you can close apps on the iPad running iOS 5.

  • App killer or Task killer or whatever...

I know I've seen this mentioned on this fourm before, but I cannot find it.  There is a build in app killer on the Incredible somewhere and I need the directions.  Thanks!
Also, does anyone know if there is Tip Calculator on the Incredible, or do I need to find an app for that...

Task killers are a waste imo.  Plenty of articles out recommending against them with the benefits being almost negligible and they typically end up causing more problems.  The android OS will manage the memory and close apps as needed.  If you're having battery life issues, look into adjusting the refresh settings of the app. Phone lagging? Look at the apps you're using and try to find alternatives.  Task managers aren't the end all be all to poorly designed or misbehaving apps.  Using it to cut down on steps required  to close a misbehaving app here or there? Setup a shortcut to manage applications or running services on you home screen and that's one less app you have using memory.
As for the running services, those are associated with apps that need constant connection and run in the background.  Stopping everything there could technically improve your battery life, but then you won't be getting emails, google talk notifications, etc.
