Taskbar & Start Menu Bug: App Shortcuts set to Run as Admin don't open pinned/recent files in RaA

This is pretty self-explanatory.
Run in Admin does not kick in when launching a file via a Taskbar's pinned app icon, even when the pinned app has been set to 'Run in Admin' mode (under Properties -> Advanced).
The same thing happens in the Start Menu -- the app can be set (Properties -> Advanced) to Run in Admin mode, and the file does not launch this way.
Why is this a problem?  Because if one is supposed to use accounts like MS asks, then running as a standard user after having a file created in an admin account, that user cannot alter the doc in any way -- no saves work.  At least this is true for files not on the C partition.  The only way W7 permits saves is to run an app in Admin mode.
(I've run into this countless times in the span of a few days with Notepad & PSPad.)
If the W7 team wants to insist that docs won't automatically run in Admin mode under these conditions (which they should!!!!!!), then at least give users a right-click context menu option to Run as Admin from the recent/pinned items list.  Currently there is no such context menu option.
Thereby, all recent items / pinned items are rendered a useless feature.....
Still loving this OS.
a.k.a.

Sorry but this is not an answer. The answer to the question is that you cannot run pinned items with the same properties as the pinned program.
I'll use Visual Studio as an option here but I'm assuming this is true for any program.
Yes, right click on the pinned program and choose the Advanced settings and you can have it  run as administrator by default. For SharePoint development for example this is great (and required). You have to run Visual Studio as admin on the local box
in order to deploy your solutions from within Visual Studio.
Even if you pin the program to the start menu or taskbar after you've set it to run as administrator it works.
What doesn't work are pinned files. Visual Studio will pin the last 5 or so solutions you've opened. This is handy if you're flipping back and forth between solutions and saves you an extra step when launching the program in that you can select it from the
context menu that appears attached to the taskbar icon.
However regardless of the setting of the pinned program, files launch in regular user mode and do not respect the "run as administrator" setting on the pinned program. I consider this a bug as it should respect the setting. And as nesmond mentioned, it makes
pinning solutions in Visual Studio useless if you need to run the program as administrator. So the best scenario you have is to pin it and set it to run as administrator but then manually open the file after launching. There is no way to have the shortcuts
that are pinned to run as administrator.

  • How can I remove items from the open a recent file menue.

How can I remove items from the "Open a Recent File" menue. Many other applications allow the clearing of that file . Is this possible in Adobe Reader 10.1.2 ? If so how?

    See this previous topic: http://forums.adobe.com/message/3759596
It is for Acrobat, but the registry entries are similar for Reader.

  • IE11 favorites 'pinned to start menu' bug - not all of these sync between Surface RT and Surface 2

    answers.microsoft.com/en-us/surface/forum/surf2-surfgetstart/not-all-of-my-favorite-websites-that-were-pinned/
Recently bought surface 2, originally pinned everything on Surface RT in windows RT, later upgraded to windows 8.1 RT
Noticed only some of my favorite websites that were pinned to start sync'd over to the Surface 2. They were also out of order, but still in the same section of the start menu
Didn't get anywhere on the other forums. Any tips here that might help?
How does the start menu sync work?

I'm pretty sure both of my surface's are already trusted devices.
I sign in to both of them every day.
First, the sync is not instant. There should be a way to force the sync... like a sync button.
I tested this by moving some pinned things around AND changing the start background and then waiting for the other one to catch up with the start menu changes.
The Journals / website pins to start are definitely bugged between the two devices. Not all of them sync.  I'm now in the process of doing a work-around.  Instead pinning them to a favorites bar folder AND the start menu... until this is resolved.
It's pretty annoying and hope that Microsoft is looking in to it.
    EDIT:
More info about the bug.  I re-pinned the website to start on the Surface 2 (which didn't originally sync over from the RT).  Now when I move it around on the Surface 2, it moves the same website, but different name on the start screen on the Surface
    RT.
So it is detecting that it is the same website pinned, but the names are not syncing over.  It is like it is hidden, although it's not like there is a box missing... it re-organizes / collapses the order down to appear that it isn't missing multiple
    boxes.
    EDIT 2:
When working on the work-around, after adding the website to a favorite bar, then going to the device that didn't sync, opening the page, then re-pinning it to start on the bugged sync device, it will insert the pin in the exact same spot on that device,
even if you name it something else - you'd think it would go to the end, but it knows where it is supposed to go... even though the sync is bugged.
I ran the troubleshooter linked here, but it just made a log. I put the result in the other forum:

  • Setting Photoshop CS5 as the default for opening all photo files?

How do I make Photoshop CS5 the default for opening all photo files?

Close the jpeg in Photoshop! This procedure is done on an unopened (closed) file in the finder, Photoshop is not involved.
Open a FINDER window, click ONCE to select your file (NOT double click to open it)
Command I or in the Finder, File menu, select Get Info.
In the GET INFO window, change the Open With item to Photoshop
Click the CHANGE ALL button, You will get the warning "This change will apply to all Adobe Photoshop CS5.app documents with extension “.jpg”.
Click CONTINUE and from now on all jpegs double clicked in the finder will automatically open in Photoshop

  • Windows 7 Elevating using UAC, does not change the standard users setting, it runs the Admins settings

When elevating privilege for a standard user using an admin account, the UAC runs the application under the admins account "user" and not the standard users account "user", the problem is that doing so, it does not change the standard
    users settings
In this example, trying to change the "Check for Updates Automatically" as the standard user, is grayed out, you have to be an admin to change this. This is a design of Java.
When you right click and run as an administrator, the option is no longer grayed out and can be deselected, however, this only changes that setting for the admins specific "user", not the standard users specific "user" the admin is elevating
    privilege for. as illustrated below.
Is there a work around for an admin to run his credentials but elevate the standard users session instead of his own or some other way to set the standard users setting when admin credentials are required?

    Hi,
Based on your description, I understand that you want to disable
Check for Updates Automatically option for standard users in Java.
You can achieve this target by editing
EnableJavaUpdate registry entry. For more details, please refer to following articles and check if can help you.
(Please back up before that registry operation. That will help us to avoid unexpected issues.)

  • Windows 10 start menu not working, app settings gone, startup programs not starting (no tray icons) KB3034229 installed

Hi, even after installing KB3034229 my start menu is gone, search does not work so I don't have any good way to start applications. I am worried because they say update fixes this error, but not for me :-(
Most of my settings are also gone. I cannot revert back (getting error about moved account, but I did not move my account location after installing technical preview)
Any help is much appreciated. Thank you!

Actually, I decided to take a look around in the Event Viewer and saw that there were errors in the "Application" section under windows logs, with the message stating "Activation of app (Insert app name here with a bunch of characters after
it) failed with error: The remote procedure call failed. See the Microsoft-Windows-TWinUI/Operational log for additional information." And a more specific error to do with ShellExperienceHost.exe  http://pastebin.com/c62Fm8xz
. (Cant figure out how to change the font back, so ill stick with this one) All the errors in the Application tab in windows logs that are "Application Errors" all come from the faulting module "Windows.UI.Xaml.dll" After trying to open
the start menu, an Application error (http://pastebin.com/WVktd0Ti) (Suddenly the font fixed itself, okay.) appeared. This is all on build 10041. The logs in "Microsoft-Windows-TWinUI/Operational" all contain something along the lines of this
"Activation of the app Microsoft.Cortana_8wekyb3d8bbwe!CortanaUI for the Windows.Launch contract failed with error: The remote procedure call failed.."
Hopefully this contains useful information to help fix this bug.
    EDIT:
After looking up the error code from the log in "Microsoft-Windows-TWinUI/Operational" (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2798317/) It seems to be a permissions issue maybe? I'll update this if I find a solution.

  • Shortcuts on start menu

Just a heads up. If you run the "--record=1" on a Vista system with the intent of running the software on XP then the shortcuts on the start menu will not be created. Run the record feature on the system you intent to install on.I know a simple mistake but I made it so others may.

you could try to do a right click and select open with and associate the file with another program, otherwise you may have to go to control panel and "default programs" and set association look for .lnk and see if adobe is associated with
it and can be changed mine says "unknown application" if that doesn't;t work you may have to find some software that will set it back to default because it will be in the registry.

  • How do I remove ALL Metro/Modern/Universal/Windows Apps without removing the Start Menu?

So with three separate builds of WTP I've run the PowerShell command to remove Metro/Modern/Universal/Windows Apps. With each build, it also removes the Start Menu. In the thread below, an MS Support person mentioned that that command was only for Windows
8.x and shouldn't be run on WTP. What? Then why is that command still available? And, why will it remove some Metro/Modern/Universal/Windows Apps, but not others? Are they marked as System required? Why isn't the Start Menu marked as System required? You'd
think that the start menu would be pretty important.
    https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/053f63bc-c174-44f1-8f6c-8ead1ad965fb/spartan-and-start-menu-on-10049?forum=WinPreview2014General
So, with the start menu being an XAML app, how do I safely remove ALL Metro/Modern/Universal/Windows Apps without removing the Start Menu? I have no use for them and don't want them on my computer. Period. There has to be some command like the one we used
in Windows 8.x that will allow use to remove ALL Metro/Modern/Universal/Windows Apps without removing the Start Menu.
Don't give an answer like "just right-click and uninstall". That doesn't work for all of these things, and do you know how long it takes to do that for all of those silly things? Too long! That's also not practical for an Enterprise desktop. It's
also not practical to leave all of that junk on the desktop, so don't suggest that either.
    Dan

The problem with PowerShell and all of those scripts is that those particular scripts require a lot of typing, or copy and paste, or having to figure out where all of those apps are stored and then insert their convoluted names into the script. For
me, scripting is like programming. I have no desire to be a programmer/developer.
I just want an option in Programs and Features to be able to turn these "features" off. We were able to do it in previous versions of Windows. If we didn't want Internet Games, we uncheck the box. If we don't want our users to be able to print
documents over the Internet, we uncheck the box. And so on down the line for any other "feature" we didn't want our enterprise users to have.
Or, we could turn those features off using the System Image Manager. Now we have to write some convoluted script with even more convoluted commands for even more convoluted names for things we don't want.
The easier script in Windows 8.x was just get-appxpackages -online | remove-appxpackages. That removed the majority of the apps for an individual user. The remove-appxprovisionedpackage command, with the convoluted name of the app, would remove them from
the hard drive - one app at a time, but that doesn't work in Windows 10.
So, they came up with a DISM command, but that doesn't work in Windows 10 either. I should say that with my limited developer skills I haven't found a way to make it work.
Again, I have no desire to be a developer/scripter. They are the same thing in my book. I'm a systems engineer. I do operating systems, not write applications.
    Dan
So, I guess there is no real answer to this question.

  • Can't pin Acrobat X Pro to Start menu

My version of Acrobat is 10.1.0, installed in early July. I find that Pin to Start menu is not listed as an option on either the Acrobat X Pro entry or the Acrobat Distiller X entry in the Programs menu.
With my prior version I had Acrobat pinned to the Start menu. It is an available option for other programs including Adobe Photoshop Elements.
The Properties of the Acrobat X Pro entry say Target type = Application, Target location is blank, Target is Acrobat X Pro grayed out, Start in is blank, Shortcut key = None, Run = Normal window, Comment = blank, Find Target and Change Icon are grayed out, the Advanced Properties box says "Choose the advanced properties you want for this shortcut" and both options are grayed out but "Run in separate memory space" is checked.
    Added:
I notice that for Elements in the Programs menu, Norton Security is listed in the right-click options, but not for the Acrobat entries.

Dave, since you have been kind enough to try to help, can you tell me how to take advantage of the information that I see above my posting in the Adobe forum? I'm not seing it now as I compose this, but to the right of the dark magenta text that says the question status is still not Answered, there were two icons with notes. One said that there is already 1 correct answer (somewhere in the database I assume) and the other said that there are 2 helpful answers. Neither one of the icons or captions was a live link, so I didn't know what to do with them.
    Thanks in advance.

No - I get the message basically saying "Can't run program while Firefox is running. Please close down Firefox & try again".
I rebooted my computer and it all works now - but that's weird it was happening before. Kinda weirded out that it happened at all.
To avoid that happening again, I still wanna know what to do to avoid it or fix it for next time. Thanks
