TB display w/MBA 2011 clamshell won't sleep, still glows in dark room

Subject says it all.
The computer is the latest model 2011 MacBook Air with Thunderbolt.
The display is the latest model 27" Thunderbolt Display.
I use the MBA in clamshell mode.
When I use any of the following methods to put the display to sleep, it darkens, but doesn't shut off the back lighting and I still see the mouse no problem.
• Hot Corner to force sleep (set via System Preferences)
• Control + Shift + Eject
• Waiting 5 minutes of inactivity (set via System Preferences)
I don't think this is right.

Software update finally kicked in and said there was a "Thunderbolt Display Firmware Update".  The update was FAST and now my problems are solved.
Thanks Apple bugfixing elves! :-

  • Su command won't work in MBA 2011 Lion 10.7.1

    Hi All,
I have an iMac, 3 MBPs running Lion and Snow Leopard. In all of them, su command works just fine and of course I had no issues with them for many years.
I just bought a MBA 2011 and it came with Lion 10.7 which I updated to 10.7.1. The su command just simply refuses to work. It display 'su: sorry' as if I typed the wrong password.
    1) I tried my own account password which is an administrator. Didn't work
    2) Enable root account and set the password. Didn't work (I checked in my all other machine, don't need to enable root as the 'enable root' is still avaialable where as if it has been enabled only 'disable root' option will be displayed
    3) Created another account (admin) also didn't work.
    What did I miss here?

    On the logs:
2:36:25 AM su: BAD SU (username) to root on /dev/ttys000
Just reformat my system and restore with fresh un-updated stock Lion, still the same issue.

  • Why won't the Thunderbolt port (Mini Display) on a 2011 MacBook Pro drive a DVI Display?

I'm trying to use a MonoPrice 5106 Mini Display to DVI adapter and a DVI cable to drive an Acer H233H 23" HD display.  I'm driving it from the Thunderbolt Port (Mini Display) on a 2011 MacBook Pro.  It doesn't work.  I use a similar MonoPrice adapter (5311) to drive the HDMI input on this monitor from the Thunderbolt port and it works fine.
I can drive the DVI input on the Acer display from an older iMac using a MonoPrice 4851 Mini-DVI to DVI adapter and this same DVI cable and it works just fine.
So, why won't it work from the MacBook Pro?  Do I need the much more expensive Monoprice 6904 dual link DVI adapter ($69)?  Why isn't this mentioned in the MacBook Pro manual or on the MacBook Pro support page?  MonoPrice says this 5106 adapter should work and if not to try the more expensive 6904 adapter.  Need a better reason to buy the more expensive adapter.
    Help please.
    Thanks,
    Vee

Just saw your question.  Just like it's Apple counterpart, the 5106 is not capable of higher resolutions.  You should, in theory, be able to drive your Acer display at lower resolutions with the 5106.  And the 5106 may be sufficient for a 23" monitor . . . you'd need to check the maximum resolution for each.
But you definitely do need the 6904 for higher resolutions.  That's what 30" monitors and other high-res displays require.

  • MBA 2011 Won't Start

MBA 2011 - About a month ago I tried starting my roommates computer. Once I turn it on it loads up just past the chime then to the "never ending circle" After this it just sits at this screen. Would like to figure out how to fully turn on the computer. Also we don't have the internet, so to fix this will we need to find some?? Is this a OS problem?
    Thank you

    Execute SMC and NVRAM resets:

  • How can I get my MBA in Clamshell Mode working again?

Hi, I bought the latest MacBook Air about four months ago pre-installed with Lion. About two months ago I bought the VGA adapter so I can use my MBA in clamshell mode. I plugged in my mouse and keyboard to the usb ports and everything worked great until I started messing with the display settings to try and improve the resolution. Now, I can't get my MBA to wake up from sleep on the external display when I close the lid. When I open my MBA, my external display acts as a secondary monitor. I've read other people's responses and they suggest InsomniaX or Caffeine or something. I DO NOT want to install these programs! It was working when I first bought it and that's how I want it. Help?

Your phone is in recovery mode.  All data on it are already lost.  You must connect your phone to your computer and restore through iTunes.

  • MBA 2011 Internal Monitor stopped working

    Hello Community,
"over night" the internal display of my 2011 MBA stopped working. :-( External Monitor and and all other things are okay, the background light is on too, but there is nothing on the internal display.
Are there any tipps to get this thing to work properly again?
    Thanks in advance.

Reset the PRAM > Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    3. Turn on the computer.
    4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    5. Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    6. Release the keys.
Note: if you are using a wireless keyboard and the Hardware Test and/or Pram reset is not working, then you may need to use a USB keyboard.
Also see > Intel-based Macs: Using Apple Hardware Test
and > Apple - Support - iMac - Service FAQ if the Pram reset does not solve your problem.

  • Late 2011 Macbook Pro won't sleep!

So I purchased a late 2011 macbook pro brand new from an apple store 3 weeks ago. Everything seemed well at first (except for a wake issue I had... odd)
Anyways... I started noticing that my notebook wasnt going to sleep, so I adjusted the power settings to sleep after 1 minute...
Sometimes the laptop will sleep after 20 minutes or more... sometimes it won't sleep at all (on all night!)
I'm wondering what the heck is going on? I tried re-installing Lion and using migration assistant to bring all my files back... no dice. same symptom.
    -I've re-installed Lion
-I've tried SMC and PRAM resets
-I've tried "pmset -g assertions" and see no conflicts
-I've tried "pmset -g" and see nothing odd
-I've tried clicking / unclicking all the "sharing" settings
-I've made sure ALL applications are closed
-pmset -g log returns a few "slowresponses" but nothing too crazy (200ms)
-system log returns some odd "wake for GIGE (network)" responses while im trying to make it sleep.
    -I deleted all printers /ques
The system WILL sleep if i manually click "sleep" or use the power button.
The system WILL sleep if i unplug the power cable and close the lid.
I have a 2nd display using a thunderbolt to DVI adapter... but unplugging this seems to have no effect.
What am I missing? could this be a logic board issue on a brand new mac? I'm lost! any suggestsion would help!

I may have solved this -- maybe -- by reinstalling Mavericks.  Two days after the re-install (which was easy), the sleep function seems to be working properly.

  • Install boot camp driver 4.0.1 on windows 8 beta in mba 2011, have error

install boot camp driver 4.0.1 on windows 8 beta in mba 2011, have error
Boot camp requires that your computer is runing windows 7
I search in the net, and also this sait, somebody say:
right click icon setup.exe, select properties , and check box windows 7
    or
right click icon, select Troubleshoot compatibility, select windows 7
I do this method, but the problem is still there!
    anybody can help ?
    please

You really want to consider posting in the Boot Camp forum -
    https://discussions.apple.com/community/windows_software/boot_camp
An unsupported OS using software not designed for that unsupported OS, probably going to be hard pressed to get concrete answers.

  • External display won't sleep

I just purchased an NEC PA271 27" LCD display for my Mac Pro. It's beautiful, clear and sharp, but there's one problem: it won't sleep.
When I put the computer to sleep or shut it down, the monitor doesn't go into sleep mode. The blue LED on the front is supposed to turn amber, indicating sleep, but it doesn't.
I've tried resetting the SMC and PRAM, as well as repairing permissions, to no avail.
    Any ideas?

I should also mention that I didn't have any problems with my ACD 23" previously, so it would seem to be an issue with this particular display and how it communicates with my Mac Pro.

  • When I'm on a Skype, Mac Air display won't sleep?

I often have a Skype call connected as my boyfriend and I are having a long distance. The display would sleep when I was having a call and out of the room when I was using OS X 10.6.8
but since I've changed to use mountain Lion 10.8.2, It won't sleep.......
I think its hurting my display for keeping a long time on.
    What's the problem?

I've already unchecked "Wake for Wi-Fi Network Access" but its not working...
but the problem has just happened after I upgraded my OS...
I wont end it... because we r in different time zone so he would like to keep it connected when he's sleeping....

  • New iMac display won't sleep?

Hi, new iMac 24", 10.5.7, set screen saver at 5 minutes, and display to sleep at 10 minutes. Screen saver works, but it will not sleep. I've changed the setting, and rebooted, still no luck.
I tried everything from suggestions, with no help. I found that if I turn off "screen sharing" in system preferences, it will sleep the display for whatever minutes I set. I have to leave "screen sharing" on because I have flat screen tv hooked up to watch video files on, and I use iPhone app to control screen, to hit play and pause, etc. It is set up with a password, and only my iPhone is used when I am watching something. Why should screen sharing stop display from sleeping? I've left screen sharing on since I got this, so I can remotely log in with "back to my mac" from the road, and it never stopped the display from sleeping before? I shouldn't have to turn off screen sharing just to sleep the display? Am I missing something?

This is for a Mac that won't sleep.
Here is KB article HT1776 with their tips.
    Mine follow;
USB devices and hubs often cause Macs to not sleep or wake quickly from sleep (notably HP printers and scanners, HP all in ones, and Cannon scanners). Disconnect all USB except for keyboard and mouse and try. If it sleeps, add one back at a time testing after each one to find the culprit.
If you've set your Mac to receive faxes, it may not be able to sleep. It might also have a damaged preferences file.
If you use your Mac for faxing, open System Preferences. click Print & Fax, click the Faxing tab, and uncheck the Receive Faxes On This Computer box.If that doesn't work or you've never faxed on your Mac, go to Finder/Hard Drive /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration and delete the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist and com..apple.AutoWake.plist files (if your Mac asks, type your admin. password).
If the latter file isn't present in the folder, go to user name(probably your name)/Library/Preferences, delete the com.apple.systemuiserver.plist file, and reboot your Mac.
    Hope this helps!
    P.S. One member here reported this (Michael Gleason);
"I have had this problem with my IMac G5. It is surprisingly irritating. LaCie's Silverkeeper backup software was the cause. By default it gave itself permission to wake up the computer to check if a backup was needed. Do you have this or a similar program installed which has scheduled activities including wake-up permissions as an option?"
Dave Hamilton provided this link, xlr8yourmac.com, to a member, which addresses failure of deep sleep with some users that updated and added new FireWire and USB card.
Also, here is Apple KB article TA2469 about PCI cards and sleep.
tomhorvat adds this; After few days of messing around I found out that I had desktop background (wallpaper) set to change every 1 minute.
After unchecking "Change picture..." in system preferences (under Desktop/Screen saver), my powerbook went to sleep all by itself.
Tristan Currier noticed this; "I have a Canon printer(shared) and my imac would not sleep. I opened up printer/fax in system prefs and noticed it said the printer was in use when it was off. Opened up the printer queue and noticed about 7 pending documents. Deleted them all and now it sleeps.
    Check the printer queue!"
Allan Jones says "sometimes there is Network activity: launch System Preferences > Energy Saver > "Options" tab and uncheck "Wake for Ethernet network administrator access."
    Good Luck!  DALE

  • Display won't sleep after being in suspend once.

When rebooting the computer, the display sleeps after set interval and can manually be put to sleep using shift+ctrl+eject.
However if the computer goes to sleep or I myself close the lid to make it sleep, the display won't sleep again.
The display won't sleep after set interval in power settings and when I press shift+ctrl+eject the keyboard backlit turns off but the screen stays on.
The only way to make it sleep is to close the lid.
I have tried resetting SMC and NVRAM but to no avail.
I have the first generation aluminium macbook.
Does anyone else have this problem?
I have had this problem both in 10.6 and 10.8

  • Display won't sleep and screen saver won't sart

I upgraded to the new OS and the display won't sleep and screen saver won't come on. Help please.

    Long shot.
    Do a backup.
    Quit the application.
In Finder hold down the option/alt key while selecting the Go menu item. Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Restart the computer, open the application and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer ones.
If you want to make your user library permanently visible, run the below command in Applications/Utilities/Terminal.
    chflags nohidden ~/Library/
You will need to do that after any updates.

    Maps
    Photo Booth
    Apple Script Editor

The problem isnt percistant, occasionally the programs will launch and work.
I have tried re-installing OSX. I sent the machine to apple service, where they told me my hdd was defective. So i bought a new SSD harddrive and installed Mavericks and i still have the same problem.
Does it sound like a hardware or a software problem?

  • Can I use MBA 2009 power cable on MBA 2011

I have a new MBA 2011 and i still have 2 power adaptors for my old MBA 2009.  Can I use the old adapters on my new MBA?

    Acording to Apple you shouldn't:
Note: Adapters that shipped with the MacBook Air (Original), MacBook Air (Late 2008), and MacBook Air (Mid 2009) are not recommended for use with MacBook Air (Late 2010) models. When possible, use your computer's original adapter or a newer adapter.
