TB downloads every mail, every time it checks for new mail, even if it has been downloaded before.

I now have about 14 copies of each mail, seems like it does not recognize that it has already downloaded it.

Hi, well, POP3 is not designed for keeping the mails in the inbox on the server permanently. Because while checking for new mails, to my knowledge it needs to go through all mails on the server's inbox to check whether it's already downloaded or not.
For this purpose, there is a client-side cache. The size of this cache can be configured in the following way via prefs.js:
user_pref("mail.server.server1.numHdrsToKeep", 10000);
I do not know the default value, but you could set it to e.g. 10000 (cache for 10000 mails). You have to check in your case which server it is (server1, server 2 etc.) according to the other entries in the config file.
However, you should not keep mails until "infinity", I do not know the maximum possible value for this, and I guess it slows down your download of new mails with increasing number of mails.
I have to admit, that I also use the setting above to increase the cache of my POP3 caches to have the mails available on my PC as well as on my smartphone's mail client. However, what I have done in order not to blow it up: In the web-based config of my mail hoster (GMX) I have specified that mails shall be automatically deleted from my inbox on the server after 3 month. This constantly keeps the number of mails far below 10000 . . .

I keep getting the message that I need to download the new update for ipages when opening old documents.  The latest update that I have download was done 11/24/13.  When I check for updates it shows that there are no new updates available.  I downloaded Maverick a few weeks back on to my iMac.  What is the issue

You have both your older iWork apps and the newer Maverick apps on your computer.
The new Maverick apps are in the Applications folder.
The older iWork apps are in the Applications/iWork folder.
Of the two, the older iWork apps are more useful so don't throw them out.

  • Mail "hiccups" every few moments, seemingly while checking for new mail. e

Every few moments, if Mail is up and running, which it always is, it "hiccups". This is disruptive enough to throw me out of an email that I might be reading, causing the message window (the lower window) to go blank.

This problem is not solved for all cases.
This solution only applies to server-side filtering/redirecting of messages into imap folders.
I'm having trouble with client-side mail.app rules moving new messages into imap folders and not having the new message counts displayed.
This wasn't a problem in the previous version of mail.app.
Here's to hoping that Apple posts a patch to fix this problem soon...

  • Mail stops checking for new mail until closed and re-opened

This problem began a month or so ago and is only getting worse by the day.  I have my Mail app set to check for new mail every minute, but recently it randomly stops checking at all and displays the triangle icon next to each Inbox.  I have 10 different email accounts that I use Mail to check and they are a variety of different types from Exchange servers, to IMAP accounts, to POP accounts, iCloud, Outlook.com, Gmail, etc.  Part of the time only 2 or 3 inboxes are affected, while other times (more recently) it’s ALL accounts.  Clicking on Get Mail doesn’t help; no new mail is downloaded.  The only way to get Mail to “wake up” is to close the app and then re-open it.  When I do that, there is a flood of new mail that pours in to each account that had been offline.  There are never any error messages telling me that anything has happened.  I just know that Mail is stuck because of the triangle icon.
Also, there are times when my busiest account mysteriously has no new messages over a few hours, which is very unusual. Closing and re-opening mail will resume downloading mail again to that account.  At least for awhile...
I thought I’d solved the problem by thinking that my router was only working intermittently, so I replaced it with a new Time Capsule.  The problem did not go away.
I’ve talked to Apple Support and they’ve not been any help.  I’d welcome any suggestions.

  • OSX 10.5.8 / Mail.app 3.6 - Mail.app No Longer Auto-Checks For New Mail

Since I upgraded to 10.5.8, Mail.app does not appear to be checking automatically for new mail. Regardless of how I set the preference (Every 1 Minute, Every 5 Minutes) it never checks for new mail, and I always have to click on "Get Mail".
I've verified this by opening the Activity WIndow and watching it for more than 5 minutes, with the preference set to 1 and 5 minutes between checks. I don't have time to test the longer intervals right now.
Mail.app is at version 3.6, modified yesterday morning at the same time that I used Software Update to apply the 10.5.8 update (from 10.5.7). I've used Spotlight to make sure that this is the only version of Mail.app on the drive.

Never mind...for the account in question, the "include this account when checking automatically" option was unchecked. Not sure how that happened...

  • Mail constantly checks for new mail; downloads same emails repeatedly HELP!

For the last three days (since 19th), Mail has been downloading the same emails over and over again. I first noticed a problem when about 20 spam emails that usually route to my Junk folder appeared in my Inbox. I thought I had just moved it incorrectly and deleted them, then they appeared again later.
The mail jogger cycle (next to Inbox) keeps turning and turning like it can't stop checking for new mail. How do I get it to stop?? The emails are multiplying like gremlins in my Inbox and driving me nuts!
Also, it only downloads new emails when I first open the app. I have to force-quit out of Mail, then reopen, and I will get a couple of new emails, and then ALL THE EMAILS FOR THE LAST THREE DAYS AGAIN.
Mail was working fine for me until three days ago. The only thing I've changed recently is a Software Update on the 15th for QuickTime and iTunes.
Please help! I tried to Repair Permissions and it didn't do anything. I also tried removing all messages from the server and that did nothing either.

UPDATE: I think I got it to stop checking mail. I have Yahoo mail and I checked my email through online Yahoo. I was able to delete a bunch of emails and it suddenly stopped checking for email in the Mail app.
HOWEVER, it will NOT remove some of my junk emails. I was able to delete over 100+ of them. But one specific message (which I now have 8 copies of) will not go away. It is one of those 'Delivery Status Notification' emails. Is this a virus??
I've tried Erasing Deleted Messages and Erasing Junk Mail. Neither helps. These emails won't go away.
Help please! I would be very grateful.

  • Is it possible to keep an email account on the iPhone but stop if from checking for new mail?

I have an email account that has been deleted from the provider (Gmail), but I want to keep the old mails on my phone, while stopping it from checking for new mail.  Is this possible?
If I disable the account to stop if from checking for new mail (and producing a bunch of annoying pop-ups every time the mail app is opened), the account becomes invisible and the old mails disappear.  I want to keep them visible to I can read and refer to them, but want to stop the phone from trying to download new ones or check the account.
    Any help appreciated.

Thanks for the thought.  In this case, that doesn't really help much, as it requires a bunch of button pushing just to check emails.  Plus, if I'm not mistaken, in addition to switching modes every time I check email, it also prevents the other accounts from downloading the most recent mails as well.  Since it's possible to keep an account on a Mac computer, but take it offline, it's very disappointing if there isn't a way to do the equivalent on an iPhone so that it passively holds the mails but doesn't send constant pop-ups every time the app is accessed.

  • Email not checking for new mail

hi, my email has stopped auto checking for new mail ( as it is set up to) , and will only do so when i quit and restart the program
if i hit get mail while it's running, nothing happens
i can see new emails via .mac but will only get them if i quit and restart mail
also now the rules and i have sometimes work and sometimes don't
i tried sending myself test emails, and there is long delay between sending and receiving it ( about an hour )
    thanks

    hi there
    it's .mac
we did try removing the .plist file, and it made no differnce
i am getting increasingly frustrated by the mail app, it's never been a particularlty good example of MAC software ( not very stable ), but now as well as unexplainable lulls where all you can do is watch spinning clock faces ( despite having a fast broadband connection ) , i'm also having to deal with sent emails re-appearing as drafts, even though they have been already been sent
i feel like i don't have the time to keep trying to find out what is going on, as i'm very busy right now, although any help is always appreciated
    thanks
    Alan,
Refresh my memory: what type(s) of account are you
using -- POP, IMAP or .mac?
Since I believe your setting up a new User Account,
and Mail in it worked, did you ever remove the
com.apple.mail.plist, and cause Mail to need to be
setup again? To do this, quit Mail, and in the
Finder open Home/Library and locate the Mail folder.
Control-click over the Mail folder, and choose
Duplicate -- then drag the resulting copy to the
Desktop for temporary backup. Next, open
    Home/Library/Preferences and find the
com.apple.mail.plist file and drag it to the
    desktop.
Relaunch Mail, which will open as though new, and
when prompted to import anything DECLINE.
Instead, re-enter your account info, and Mail will
re-discover the account for this account, and all
    should be well.
Sorry that I have not had time to go back over every
    one of your prior posts.

  • Check for new mail not working on one account

For a number of months now I have been having trouble getting new mail. I have my Apple Mail 2.1 preferences set to check for new mail every minute and play a New Mail Sound when something arrives. This seems to be working for my earthlink POP account but not my dot.mac e-mail account. The only way to get new dot.mac e-mail on my G5 tower is to alternately click on the left most icons for the different incomming tray icons in my in box, then the InBox icon itself. I dont have to do that for my second e-mail account--an earthlink POP account, or on either account on my laptop. Also, When I do click on the specific in box for my dot mac account, it takes forever to load that new mail, and the activity monitor shows that it is caching every attachment that is already in my in box even though it is already old mail.
Also, Mail seems to be following Smart Mailboxes arbitrarily. For instance, I have a smart mailbox set up to display any incoming mail from someone in my Family Group from address book, however it seems to ignore about half of these, but display the other half accurately.
Anyone know whats going on or how to fix it so I dont have to mannually keep checking for new mail? Again, I have my preferences set to check for new mail every minute and to play a new mail sound, and new mail does work fine from my Earthlink POP account.
    Thanks for your help.

  • OSX 10.10 Mail, check for new mail at system startup?

When I start the mail app, it will check for new messages.  But can the mail app be set to automatically check for new mail at system startup?  I typically do not "re open apps when logging back in".
    THANKS

Leave Mail running and set it to check every minute. AFAIK, there's no way to check otherwise.

  • Mail? How to set auto check for new mail?

Ok, I want to be able to turn on my mac, and whenever a new mail arrives it play a sound or pop up etc..
Now I made the setting in mail Preferences>General>Check for new mail every 5 min, and I tested by sending myself a email, but it didn't make any notify sounds or anything..
So my question is do I have to open Mail at startup for this to be able to work? "Open at login" or any other ?
    Thanks
    Message was edited by: nubbic

To start Mail automatically, go to System Prefs>Accounts. Highlight your account then click on the login items tab. Add Mail to the list.
As for sounds, that is under the Mail prefs. Make sure your sound is turned up.

  • "Include when checking for new mail" option not working

    Hi,
I have 2 email accounts set up on mail, but I only want 1 of them to pull down mail (the other will only be used for sending). For the account I don't want to get mail I deselect the box "include when checking for new mail".
However, Mail still pulls down messages from that account. When I put in the correct server settings for the incoming, it pulls all of my mail (in this case gmail), and when I put in bad settings (as a way of avoiding getting the mail) I get an annoying error message.
Does anyone know of a way to make that function of Mail work?

    Hi feuerstein.
How have you set up the Gmail account in Mail (POP, IMAP), and under which circumstances does Mail check for new mail on that account? More info, please.
BTW, Mail doesn’t automatically check when launched every account if Include when automatically checking for new mail has been turned OFF. That happens with IMAP accounts only (and only if they’re “online”), not with POP accounts, but it isn’t clear at all whether that’s what you’re talking about...

    Hello Barry
Thanks for your reply, it did the trick, in a weird sort of way:
After deleting the mail preference file as you suggested, I could check for new mail messages without Mail.app crashing all over the place.
However all my accounts and the messages in them was gone. Okay, one problem solved and new one created.
Solution: Reinstalling my wifes and my own mail accounts and reimporting all the messages from the backup. Sounds boring right?
So I threw caution to the wind and replaced the new preference file with the old one that I had kept in the (disabled) folder. Thinking that it was an easily reversible step.
And it ruddy worked! Now I can again check for new mail messages and I have the old mail accounts intact. The logic of this however escapes me.
The morale: Its a weird world sometimes;-)
Thanks again for your help, it is much appreciated.
    cheers Nikolaj

  • Gmail continuously checking for new mail!

this is a very perplexing problem and i have searched forums for how to fix it but as i don't quite know what to call the problem, i haven't found any solutions yet!
i just got a new iMac and proceeded to set up my two gmail accounts with mac mail. one works perfectly fine, the other, for some reason unbeknown to me seeing as both were set up in the exact same way, the second gmail account is stuck continuously checking for new mail with the loading circle next to it.
i have tried deleting the account and adding it again several times, as well as restarting my computer and mail. i have tried taking the account offline and then connecting again but nothing has worked so far.
the settings are EXACTLY the same as the first gmail account that works fine. both are set to IMAP and as i didnt get the option to manually set up an account when i added them, they were both set up automatically by the mac mail app.
it might be helpful to note that i have the same two accounts set up on my macbook with mail 3.6 and they both work fine, so it is not a problem with my gmail account. (however on the macbook they are set up as POP not IMAP.. but i dont see an option to change that in mail 4.2)
PLEASE HELP! as i am very frustrated i cannot work this out on my own. not sure what other information you need but please just let me know if you need to see a screencap or something.
many thanks in advance for any help that can be provided.

    FWIW:
Apple Mail 4.0 and Snow Leopard seem to have multiple issues, rather long threads that follow (see links), but some users with multiple Gmail accounts have tried different solutions: best of luck.

    One guy notes:
    +Possible Solution Found+
+Ok, I think I may have figured something out here....+
+I use IMAP as stated earlier.+
+I started from scratch with my gmail accounts in mail 4.0.+
+I hit Mailbox > Take all accounts offline.+
+Then created my 2 gmail accounts, following gmail's support page I unchecked all the options on the Mailbox Behaviors tab.+
+I used [email protected] for the username, not just the first part of my email, i.e. [email protected] This is also suggested in the gmail help guide, but mail doesn't set it up this way.+
+I forced my SMTP port to 587 in mail's setting instead of just having it use "standard ports 25, 465, 587"+
+I created both accounts, set those options, and hit take all mailboxes online. Mail seems to be downloading my messages from gmail smoothly so far for both accounts at the same time.+

  • Mail forces "include when automatically checking for new mail"

I have two fully updated Leopard machines and a .Mac account through which I sync mail accounts, etc.
I primarily use IMAP to check mail, but I have some POP accounts set up in mail so that I can sometimes send mail from a different account. I uncheck the box on the advanced tab in Mail Preferences that says "Include when automatically checking for new mail." I have checked the box "Enable this account" which allows me to send the mails on a case-by-case basis.
The system works quite well when it stays in this mode. But sometimes the system forces the box to be checked on the POP accounts and it downloads mail that I don't want (this mail gets routed to the IMAP accounts anyway, so I wind up getting it twice).
I cannot figure out how to stop this from happening. I have made sure both machines have identical account setups. I have forced synced from one machine with the proper account setup to .Mac, then force synced from .Mac to the other machine to ensure they were equal. But it keeps happening anyway.....
Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

For the purposes you have these accounts, both deselect (as you have done) Include when checking for new mail, and take the account Offline. The latter does prevent sending with the account, but will stop the undesired downloads.
