TB NEVER shuts off when running "Gentle Alarm"

I've been running an App called "Gentle Alarm" at night, and every time it is running, my TB has never shutoff.  The phone is always sitting there with the app running when i wake up in the morning.  I open the app, and select "Night Display" on the right at the top and it dims a little bit, then the clock keeps floating around the screen all night.
So, I'm guessing, that there is something that this app shuts off when it runs and allows it to keep running all night that is causing all of our headaches with the thunderbolt.
I'm hoping there's some kind of scientific explanation for it and that I just haven't been lucky that it hasn't shut off since I've been running this app....
I'm using the paid version that was available as the free app of the day a month back on May 9th....

Forget it.  It rebooted a minute ago....

  • Airport Express is shutting off when running newer firmwares including the latest 7.6.1

    Hi All,
My Airport Express has started shutting off in the past month or so after upgrading to the newer firmwares 7.6 & 7.6.1
When the Airport Express shuts off, the status light goes dark and the only way to reset it is to unplug it, wait a few seconds and then plug it back in.
After I plug the unit back in, it works for maybe 15 to 20 minutes and shuts off again.
I googled the problem and I have noticed that others are having similar problem. Some people say that the hardware is failing or has failed. Others have mentioned resetting the unit to defaults and or downgrading the firmware.
So I reset my unit to factory, but it didnt seem to help and the unit still kept turning off.
Next I tried downgrading the firmware.
I tried looking for a way to downgrade using the new Airport Utility on my Mac thats running Lion. However i could not find such and option. So i found the older version (AirPort Utility 5.6) on Apples website that would allow me to do the fimware downgrade.
After installing the older version I managed to find the firmware downgrade function in Manual Setup. I downgraded the firmware to Version 7.3 (the oldest one I could choose). Once the unit has flashed itself it rebooted and came up in the Airport Utility. However It wouldnt allow me to configure the airport. The configuration options wouldnt load at all. This was fixed by resetting the unit to default. After it came back up I managed to set it up to how I had it before.
And since then its been running problem free without any hiccups for the past two days!!
My question is, has anyone seen this before? What could this be? Did Apple release the wrong firmware for my Airport Express Hardware? Did my Airport Express Flash the newer firmware imporperly? Were the settings from the old firmware incompatible with the newer firmware? Is the newer firmware causing the Aiport Express to oveheat or run out of spec? Or does Apple simply not put much effort into testing the firmware updates that it releases?
It would be nice if the Airport Express would flash a colored light instead of shutting down completely if something firmware/software related is causing the unit to crash or overheat.
I would like to know if anyone else has dealt with this problem.

    Two likely possibilities:
    1) An internal electronic component is on the verge of failure. It works until it gets hot, at which point it changes value and causes a shut down of the device.
    2) An internal connector is right on the verge of losing contact. When the device heats up, heat expansion causes a loss of physical contact.
I assume that the Express is out of warranty. It is a real longshot, but you might try to carefully saw open the AirPort Express along the center seam to split the case in half to expose the internal electronics. There might be something obvious.....but unfortunately, more likely not.
Chances are, you will need to replace the device.

  • My iBook just shuts off when it is still partially charged. Help?

Hello, I have an 14" iBook G4, and have been having problems lately with the computer shutting off (going dead, and not into sleep mode) after it has been running on battery power for awhile. It usually shuts off when the battery is at around 45-60 percent charge still left. It never shuts off when plugged in to the charger. Here are some specifics on the battery from the System Profiler:
    Battery Information:
    Battery Installed: Yes
    First low level warning: No
    Full Charge Capacity (mAh): 1545
    Remaining Capacity (mAh): 1542
    Amperage (mA): 0
    Voltage (mV): 16543
    Cycle Count: 225
I have been thinking about getting a new battery but I just replaced this one a year or two ago so I don't think it should be bad yet.
A few things that I think might be causing the problem might be that I upgraded this computer a while ago by putting in a 100 GB hard drive and putting in a Superdrive (it originally had a 40 GB HD and a Combo Drive). I also have an extra 512 MB of RAM installed. I also just recently upgraded to Mac OS 10.4.11. I had been running 10.4.6 for the longest time (mostly because I always though it was safer because sometimes when I had updated computers in the past they'd run into problems. Plus, I have software that I knew would run with OS 10.4.6 - plus the install discs).
Anyway, let me know what you guys think I should or could do to fix this problem. I'm on my computer all the time so I should respond quickly to your guys' (or girls') advice.
Thanks for any help you can give. Later

I looked into resetting the PMU (although I think I already tried that a week ago), I don't know if something specific is supposed to happen to let me know something was reset but everything functioned pretty much as normal.
I tried recalibrating the battery with minimal success, it went down to 31% then actually said 0% and died. I tried recalibrating twice and it doesn't go into sleep mode, it just dies. It'll go down to 0% and still not go into sleep mode. Now my battery reading says this(with the power cord unplugged):
    Battery Information:
    Battery Installed: Yes
    First low level warning: No
    Full Charge Capacity (mAh): 1315
    Remaining Capacity (mAh): 1313
    Amperage (mA): -778
    Voltage (mV): 16178
    Cycle Count: 225
I took continual readings of the Battery in the System Profiler and pasted them into a Word document when the computer was at 0% capacity and was still on but wouldn't go into sleep mode (it eventually just died). I can post some of those on here if you want.
I also tried that Coconut Battery program to let me know any new information about the Battery and it says nothing really new. It says the battery has a max capacity of 1315 mAh (although just couple of days ago it used to have around 1500mAh - read my first post above - I don't know if that means I've made progress or the battery is worse off then when I started) and also the Battery originally had 4400 mAh capacity (so now it's at about 29% of its original strength).
One thing did disturb me though is that the battery might not be recording the number of cycles correctly. Even though I've gone through at least a few charges in the last couple of days, it still says "225" and it should be higher. You'll even notice that it said "224" in the Battery Information in my first post. I've gone through at least a couple of complete discharges, I would think.
Anyway, I hope there are some more options on the table, but I'll see if I can keep re-calibrating it and it will finally work. I am starting to wonder if its the battery or the module inside it or some other problem. Anyway, thanks for the help.

  • My iphone3gs shuts off when i jump between apps or run certain apps...  even with 90 percent it will shut down and shows vertical lines through the black screen...  any ideas what this could be?

My iphone 3gs shuts off when flipping to different apps or running certain apps.  If it crashes badly I need to plug power to the device to bring it up.  This happens whether i have even 90 percent battery life.  Any idea as to what this may be?

Sounds like a major hardware problem.
If no change after restoring your iPhone as a new iPhone or not from your iPhone's backup, there is a hardware problem.

  • H330 Fan Never Shuts Off

So as the title says the side fan and only fan in my H330 never shuts off so either I am running hot or the fan is malfuntioning. Around what temps should I be looking for in my bios to help diagnose the problem ? Any other idea or suggestions greatly appreciated. I still have a warranty so that is also an option for me FYI.

    hi grandprix60490,
    Welcome to the Lenovo Community.
The fan usually spins at a high rate if the BIOS configuration is setup that way or if the thermal sensor is picking up high temperature reading. If you're concern about the heat, you can use CoreTemp to monitor the temperature (it also monitors the TJ Max of the CPU (this is around 95-100 degrees celsius for Intel chips). When a CPU core goes beyond the TJ Max, a CPU throttle, downclock, a BSOD, or a system shutdown will occur. You can get it here - http://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/
If you're hearing any rattling / grinding noise that's comming out from the fan, you will need to send the unit in for service. Otherwise, if you're just running on medium load and the one of the CPU core reaches TJ max, the thermal paste (CPU cooling compound) needs to be re-applied.
    Hope this helps

My iPOD class (last generation) shuts off when jostled--like what
happens when the headphones come out.  Is there any fix for this?

I finally resolved my problem after spending way too much time on it. I simply handed my 160GB iPod to my husband to put his fav Stones & Beatles songs on and I went back to my 80GB Microsoft Zune which has never disappointed me.
After spending so much time trying to figure this out I did finally take it back to Apple Store who performed a diagnostic and found there was a problem with the device. They replaced it with a refurbished one which has similar issues. All I wanted to do was listen to my music. Was that too much to ask? So I am happy to be free of this problematic device. No more Apple for me!!

  • Why iMac shuts off when in sleep mode? Using latest System (Yosemite)

Can anyone tell me why my iMac 27", running on the latest system (Yosemite), all of a sudden started shutting off when put in the sleep mode?

    Try resetting the SMC.
Additionally, look at the log files around the time the system shut down.
You might also take it in for testing/diagnosis.

  • Re-occuring shut off when scrolling even after firmware upgr

    Hello all,
I have a Muvo Tx FM and have had it since May. In June, it started shutting off when I used to scroll bar. I came to the forum and the suggestion was to reinstall the firmware. So I dl'ed it from this site and reinstalled it. The player worked fine and I was estatic.
Fast-forward to August and its doing it again.
Does anyone know why this happens?
Is there a more permanent solution to the issue?
How long is the warranty on these players (typically)?
I will try to upgrade the Firmware, but somehow I doubt this is going to help.
    -Thanks,
    TG.

Some people have linked it with happening when removing the player from the PC, without ensuring it's "safely removed".
Failing that, can you pinpoint any event that causes it to happen?
Warranty varies depending where you bought it. It's 3 months in the USA (I'm not sure if the MuVo is covered with a further 9 months parts only warranty, I know some of the Zen players are). In Europe the warranty is at least year.

  • 14" iBook G4 shuts off when I open it up

I just started having this problem two days ago with my iBook. When I close it everything looks fine, the little light in the front is lit showing that it is still on but when I open up the computer, instead of waking up, it just shuts off and then won't turn on forever. It seems like I have to hit the power button just right for it to come back on. It does not shut off at any other time, only when I open up the computer. Other than this I have no problems. It does not appear to be the battery and it does not shut down at any other time. Why is it shutting off when I try to open it and why will it not turn on again? I hope this question makes sense!

    nerone,

I tried to put it to sleep through the Apple menu and it also shuts down then.
OK that last step eliminated the cable, reed/cable and inverter problems.
So that makes it a PMU problem. The PMU is actually a tiny computer within the computer. It's official designation is PMU99.
    http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Hardware/DeveloperNotes/Macintosh_CPUs-G4/12inchPowerBookG4/2_Architecture/chapter_3_section4.html
    "Power Control IC
The power manager IC in the 12-inch PowerBook G4 is a Mitsubishi M16C/62F microprocessor, also called the PMU99. It operates with its own RAM and ROM. The functions of the PMU99 include:
*controlling the sleep and power on and off sequences
    *real time clock
*controlling power to the other ICs
    *monitoring the battery charge level
    *controlling battery charging
*supporting the interface to the built-in keyboard
The 12-inch PowerBook G4 can operate from a 15-volt power outlet on an airliner, however for safety reasons the computer will not allow battery charging. In order for the computer to detect the connection to airline power, the airline power cable should have a sense resistor of 24.3K ohms connected between the power plug's shell and ground.
The PMU99 also provides the hardware interface to the keyboard. Software in the PMU99 IC scans the keyboard, then sends the data to the system in packets like those from the ADB. To the system, the keyboard behaves as if they were ADB devices"
    Try resetting it:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=14449
If that doesn't work try what I call a deep PMU reset.
Pull all power including the battery, push the power button to remove residual charge in soft start capacitors.
Then walk away from it for at least 10 hours.
Try it again in the morning. Stuff like this has happened and people have left things alone and come back days, weeks and months later and their Macs are fine.

  • My ipod keeps shutting off when go to the music menu

I have had my black 4 gb nano for a while and today it started shutting off when i push the center button when going into the music button kind of like it is going to sleep because when i turn it back on the apple logo shows up does anyone know how to fix this i already tried resetting it and does anyone know where to buy the invisible shield? thanks.

I had the same problem (now I have a different problem). This happens when you delete podcasts from the nano but do not delete the podcast directory from the ipod itself.
In iTunes, click on your iPod on the menu on the left. Then click on "podcasts" -- below your ipod. Then look for any podcast directories without actual podcasts below the directory. Delete the directory(ies) and you should be okay.

My iPod keeps shutting off when I go onto apps. It has shut off about 3-5 times in the last hour. Help?

    Try the standard fixes:
    - Reset. Nothing is lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory defaults/new iPod.
