TC and AE with external HDD?

It´s not possible to make a backup on a HDD that is connected to the TC. But If I have a TC and add a Airport Extreme with an external HDD connected to the AE. Is it possible to include the external HDD into the backup that the TC does?

Is it possible to include the external HDD into the backup that the TC does?
No, if you are asking about a Time Machine backup, since Time Machine can only back up a Mac and a hard drive that is connected directly to a Mac.
Try Carbon Copy Cloner, SuperDuper or Chronosync to back up the drive connected to the AirPort Extreme.  These will not be Time Machine backups, of course.

The other day i started to have my first problems with leopard my computer froze and i couldn't do anything but hold the power button to restart it when i restarted it would not see my usb external hdd i had tunned time machine off untill i get another hdd specifically for it. same thing happened today using a file off the external hdd then computer just froze i can't figure out what the problem is... i have tunned off time machine.. and locked the option but it has managed to turn it's self back on ??? but it had been locked for the last few times as i check it every time i login..
does anyone know a work around for this in leopard as it's going to take a whole day to re-install tiger and all my apps...

Long time ago I have upgraded even older Satellite M70 with SATA HDD (270 GB if Im remembering well) and everything was fine.
In my opinion upgrade with normal SATA HDD should not be problem. It must not be SATA II because it will not work faster.
I cannot say for sure but there must be some compatibility problem.
Lets see if anyone else had more luck with HDD upgrade on Satellite A100.
Have you checked this forum with advanced search option? Maybe you can find some older thread about HDD upgrade on A100.

  • Permissions and problems with external HDD

Starting today I have been unable to copy anything to my 1T Seagate FA GoFlex external HDD. I can access the drive, I can copy files FROM the drive back to my Mac Mini, but I cannot copy anything to the drive. Whenever I try to copy anything I get the error "The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -50)." I have spent the last four hours doing an exhaustive search, and have tried every solution I've come.
Somehow, over the last few days, something has happened to change this external HDD--the permissions and possibly the format. I have been in Disk Utility and am unable to repair. I have tried accessing Disk Utility from startup and am unable to repair. I have also copied the content off of the HDD and have tried to reformat the drive, but I'm getting an error when I try this as well.
When I tried to verify the disk I got this error:
When I tried to repair the disk I got this error:
After copying all of the important files to other drives, I attempted to reformat and got this error:
Then I tried the secure option and got this error:
I did notice that when I click on the Erase tab, the format shows as "Mac OS Extended" but when I click on the RAID tab the format shows "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)". Shouldn't these match?
I have been using this external HDD for several years now and have never had a problem. This does coincide with the copying of some .mp3 files. Could this be the culprit? (I was unable to remove one zip folder of these mp3 files.)
The permissions for this external HDD seem out of whack as well:
It states "You can only read" but the admin account "MiniMel (Me)" sholws Read & Write.
I am completely stumped and irritated. Is there any help for this HDD or is it just failing? It was no where near capacity. Could the mp3 files have caused the problem? I think this is unlikely, the the timing is coincidental. Should I worry about this happening to the other external HDD and my HD where I copied the files so I could reformat?
Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

    Thank you for your reply.
I tried that last night. When I tried to verify the disk from startup, I received this message:
when I tried to repair the disk I received this message:
After the second message, I moved what I needed off the external HDD and tried to reformat. Which led to the errors in my OP. So frustrating.

  • Macbook Pro won't boot with external HDD plugged

I have a weird problem. My late 2008 Macbook Pro won't start with external HDD plugged either FW or USB... The screen stays white until I unplug it and then the Apple logo is there.
Anyone know any solution for this? Or anyone have the same problem

yeah I had the exact same issue with one of my 750GB externals too. I just left it for a while (about an hour or so) and it was fine..
I believe its so slow because the system is indexing the drive, which can be a very slow process if the drive is big, has a complex folder-hierarchy, and/or is fragmented.
Does the hard-drive appear quite quickly in Finder once OS X has started up? if its slow it may confirm what I've just said.

  • IMac with external HDD backup to Time Machine

I have an iMac with a 1TB internal HDD and have run out of space due to the number of photos in my library.  I want to move the photos to a 1TB external HDD, then add a new 2TB external HDD to serve as the new Time Machine backup drive.  So my setup will include the iMac and two connected external HDDs.  What is the best way to set this up so the new Time Machine backup drive captures both the internal iMac HDD and the external photos HDD?  Any tips or tricks would be appreciated.  Thanks!

First of all, note that Time Machine can only make backups of drives formatted in HFS+ (known as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)"), so your 1 TB external drive has to use that format before moving your photos to it. As you are using it to make Time Machine backups, it is already using that format.
There are two possibilities in order to start using a different external drive for Time Machine:
Move your old Time Machine backups made in your 1 TB external drive to your 2 TB external drive.
Start a completely new backup, deleting the old ones.
In the first possibility, you only have to follow these steps -> Time Machine: How to transfer backups from a current backup drive to a new backup drive - Soporte técnico de Apple After moving your Time Machine backups to the 2 TB external drive, remember to format the 1 TB drive with Disk Utility in order to store your photos there.
In the second possibility, just go to System Preferences -> Time Machine, and choose your 2 TB external drive as your Time Machine drive. Then, format the 1 TB external drive.
In both cases, Time Machine does not make backups of external drives by default, so after moving your photos to the 1 TB external drive, you have to go to System Preferences -> Time Machine -> Options, and remove the 1 TB external drive from the excluded items list. By doing that, the next backup will also include your 1 TB drive.

how can i send the music, photos and films from extern hdd to time capsule?

Hi Niel, i open Time Mchine, starts a new screen where i can see all Data (program etc.), my macbook and my extern hdd. there i have musik, films and picture...when i click them, where i have to set them?
Sorry, i got the last 20 years a pc, this is my first macbook pro and from today my first 2TB air port time cap.

  • Does Time Machine only work with external HDD's and Networks?

I have a Mac Mini that I just replaced the optical drive with a hard drive. This second HDD is formated into two partitions, with one of them being for my Time Machine backups, the other a media scratch drive.
When I try to choose this volume in setting up Time Machine, I get an error message that says, +"Are you sure you want to back up to the same disk your original data is on?"+ The message goes on to explain that +"the volume you have chosen for storing backups is on the same disk as the volume containing your data... you should back up to a volume on a different disk."+
The volume that I have selected IS on a different disk than my start-up system drive and the data to be backed up IS NOT on the same disk as the disk storing the backups. System Profiler defines my startup HDD as "BSD Name: disk0" and my second HDD as "disk1," with the two partitions "disk1s2" and "disk1s3." Mount Point for the start-up HDD is "/" and the two partitions on the second HDD are "/Volumes/Scratch Disk" and /Volumes/Time Machine." These two volumes show up as options when I "Choose Backup Disk" in Time Machine, but not the Mini's startup HDD.
Does Time Machine allow the use of second internal HDD? I have an external HDD, but it has a clone of my start-up drive on it. Thanks for any help.

Chris, excluding the other volume could certainly be the issue since the two options that I'm given for a backup volume are both on the same hard disk. The start-up system HDD is not listed. Maybe the message is referring to this, rather than to the start-up disk.
Not until after I selected "use this volume anyway," did I get to the "Option" screen to exclude items from the backup. When I selected "+" I was surprised to find the other volume, Scratch Disk, listed along with the start-up HDD as being included in the backup routine. So I selected Scratch Disk as one of the items to exclude.
As V.K. mentions, the cautionary message is rather vague as to what exactly it is referring to. Thanks.

  • Have a still folder with a question mark and OS on external HDD isn't loading onto the Mac Pro

Good Morning....... I'm having an issue with this Mac Pro I've recently purchased that came with an 500GB HDD and I added an 2TB HDD also, but it never had an OS on it and when you power on the Mac Pro, you'll get a still folder with a question mark on it. I am very determined to get this situation corrected!!! I had got a copy of Snow Leopard on a blank DVD from a friend of mine but nothing had changed or occurred when I put it in the optical drive & I even saved Maverick installation on an external HDD; it read the drive when I held down the option key during the startup chime, I choose the external because that’s the only volume it shown on the screen; nothing else!!! No sign of the copied disk, the two HDDs that's in the Mac Pro, just the external HDD with the OS on it; I choose the external with Maverick on it but it still doesn't read and then a still folder with the question mark appears..... Can someone please help & save me PLEASE?????????

Buy a retail copy of Snow Leopard, then we can "chat" and get you with a system installed.

  • Problem with External HDD and Disk Utility

I'm having issues with my external hdd, I keep all of my media on it, and randomly it is no longer readable, and doesn't show up on the desktop, it only gives me the options to initialize, ignore or eject, when I try to initialize it and run first aid, all of the options are greyed-out and I cannot click on them. The only option in Disk Utility that I can do is erase. Is there anyway to fix the hdd so I can continue to read and write to the device, I really don't want to lose over 600 gigs of photo's, videos and music.

Since it sounds like the disk is on the way out, I would suggest that you back it up preferably twice.
Once you have your data backed up then and only then you can start troubleshooting the problem.
What model Mac do you have?
How is the disk connect to your Mac?
Does the disk have another type of connector?

  • Time Capsule and iTunes working with external HDD

    Hello all.
I have a situation I would to share with you and see if there is a solution.
I have a PC and a Macbook Air. I had a Time Capsule which had my iTunes library but the drive failed and I lost everything. However when it was running things weren't going great. Because the Time Capsule was a bit clever, it only spun the HDD when TIme Machine was backing my MBA.
This meant that I had trouble accessing my iTunes library because it wasn't always available. So I would have to locate the library on most occasions and on even more occasions iTunes lost the links with my media files and had to go through the time consuming 'Find files' process.
I was wondering if an answer to my problem would be to store all my music and other media on an external HDD (like the GoFlex). The I could plug it into my PC, then my MBA and if I wanted to make it avable to both I could plug it into Time Capsule and it would 'broadcast' it to both.
I was wondering if anyone had tried this and how it worked, Would iTunes see the HDD plugged directly into the MBA as the same as the HDD being plugged into the Time Capsule?
I look forward to hearing your suggestions.

  • Connecting and backing up external HDD to a Time Capsule

    Hi All,
Running a Macbook pro Retina. I would like to do the following things with a Time Capsule:
Physically connect an external HDD to the time capsule, put media on this external HDD and access it wirelessly on my macbook
Use the time capsule to back up (via Time Machine) the data on both my macbook's HDD and the external HDD
I would be grateful for help with the following queries:
Will Time Machine allow me to back up both the internal HDD and external HDD that is connected to the time capsule?
Does the external HDD I attach to the time capsule need its own power source, or will it take its power from the time capsule via USB?
Does the time capsule need to be turned on 24/7? Or can it just be turned on when I need to perform a back up / access the information on the external HDD?
Thanks for your help in advance. I know some of these questions may seem obvious, but having seen contradictory information online I'd like to make sure of my ground.

Physically connect an external HDD to the time capsule, put media on this external HDD and access it wirelessly on my macbook
Technically, you could do this. The question is whether you should do this.  The USB 2.0 port on the Time Capsule brings new meaning to word s-l-o-w, so copies and access are going to sluggish at best.  The port operates at about half the speed of a USB port on a computer.
As far as locating media on the USB drive, you would not want to locate a "working"  library there, as the experts in the iPhoto and Aperture forums strongly recommend against this, as well as Apple in their support documents. An iTunes Library is going to be really slow as well if you are thinking of that, and the library will tend to get lost, so you will wind up pointing iTunes to the library on a regular basis.
I've learned the hard way that it is much better to locate media on a drive that is directly attached to the Mac. Access is much faster and more reliable, and Time Machine can back up both the Mac and the attached hard drive.
Use the time capsule to back up (via Time Machine) the data on both my macbook's HDD and the external HDD
That is not possible, since Time Machine can only back up data on a Mac, or a drive that is connected directly to a Mac.
Will Time Machine allow me to back up both the internal HDD and external HDD that is connected to the time capsule?
    No, see answer above.
Does the external HDD I attach to the time capsule need its own power source, or will it take its power from the time capsule via USB?
Use a powered USB hub with the hard drive unless the drive has its own power supply. Sometimes though, you still have to use a powered USB hub with a drive, even when the drive has its own power supply.  You won't know if he drive will work until you try it out.
Does the time capsule need to be turned on 24/7? Or can it just be turned on when I need to perform a back up / access the information on the external HDD?
Apple designed the Time Capsule to be "always on" since there is not even an "Off" switch on the device.  Network connections will remain a lot more stable if you leave the TC on.  With Yosemite, the TC has a hard enough time not losing network connections. Forcing the TC to establish new connections every time that you power it off and back on is bound to create issues.

  • Preview issue with external HDD

    Hi,
I have a problem with Preview and external HDD. Preview doesn't recognize my external HDD, at least the pictures on it. When I try to open any image on External HDD, Preview says, that the file doesn't exist. But when I open the picture with Safari or Pixelmator or Firefox, it opens. What could be the problem?
    Sorry for my bad English.

It didn't help. When I tried to add it on the privacy list, it says, that it couldn't be added because of unknown error. And i noticed, that when I open something in TextEdit or Pixelmator, they wont save it on the External HDD, but when I choose Save As... and from there choose my External HDD, theres no problems.
Messy text but I hope You understand.

  • Help with external hdd

I just got a mac mini(intel) 2.0 and i want to add an external hdd. i also want to load windows xp. is there a way to load windows on the external and if so what is the best drive to use.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
You can load and run Windows from an external drive using Parallels Desktop (http://www.parallels.com/) or VMware Fusion (http://www.vmware.com/products/fusion/) - both of which are commercial products, both of which allow MacOS and Windows to be run at the same time. You cannot, however, run Windows using Apple's own BootCamp, which only allows the system to be booted into either MacOS or Windows, not both at the same time.
Almost any external hard drive will do - though for best performance a firewire drive would be a better choice than a USB device. Typically that would mean a drive with dual FW and USB, since FW alone is not a common feature.

  • Privacy with external HDD ?

I'm pretty new to macs -and I was wondering about privacy and security when using an external HDD. If the external HDD was loaded with OSX and you were using it to work on, would there be any way to tell on the main HDD that an external HDD was used or traces of what programs were used or documents/files were opened on the main HDD?

No. Except if you save things to the main HD. As far as the computer knows, the ext HD is running it.
