TC and Windows 7 RC1

Just wondering if anyone has tried connecting to their Time Capsule (dual band) using Windows 7 RC1. I am having issues connecting. Any help would be great. Since it is only a RC neither Microsoft nor Apple has been able to help me.

I don't have the dual-band TC, but I do have the dual-band AirPort Extreme Base Station and I'm not having any issues connecting my PC that is running Windows 7 RC1 (x64). I also can connect to it with my MacBook with the same Windows 7 OS running under Parallels.

  • Itunes and Windows 7 RC1

So I just installed RC1 of Windows 7 this morning, now my ipod nano(3gen) will not connect. I was aware that in the Win7beta you had to tell it to use your ipod as harddrive to keep it active during sync.
itunes will no longer connect my ipod up(occassionally I will get message about possible corrupt ipod library but I'm not able to do a reformat as itunes will not keep the ipod connected. The display on my ipod just keeps cycling between main menu and connected/disconnecting

I installed Windows 7 RC last night as well. I had big problems trying to sync my iPod 5G and iPhone. I'm no help since I'm not sure what I finally did to get it working. All I know is I had to mess around with both for a while to get them working.

  • IPod Mini and Windows Vista RC1

Ok, so I connect my mini to my Vista RC1 machine (FULL PC, not BootCamp), then went to bed. A few minutes later, the mini's screen lights up like I just connected it to the machine, then the main ipod folder opens up like it was set to hard-drive mode. For some reason, the iPod keeps reconnecting to the computer. I can't figure out how to stop it. Any help would be appreciated.

    Hello pc1971,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
Have you tried some of the basics such as plugging it into different USB ports on your computer or try a different USB Connector Cable?
Maybe try resetting the device with it connected to your system. To do this, toggle the hold switch on and off, and then press and hold the Menu and Select (Center) buttons together for a few seconds until the Apple logo appears.
Otherwise, I would continue working through the recommend troubleshooting steps provided in this Apple support document.

  • Installing Windows 7 RC1 with Boot Camp AND Parallels?

I have a 24" iMac (2009 model) and have successfully installing Windows 7 RC1 using Boot Camp. No problems at all and everything is working fine. But now I'm contemplating purchasing Parallels and using Windows 7 in a window.
I just need to know the steps involved and how this works. First I purchase and install Parallels. Then I run it and somehow tell it to use my Boot Camp partition for the VM, right? In this way, I'm assuming I don't actually have to install Windows 7 again or make another partition, right? Once I get the VM installed, then I can either boot to Windows 7 from startup OR boot from within Mac OS using Parallels and it would be the same?
If I can do it this way, can anyone point me to step-by-step instructions on how to choose the right settings in Parallels? I have found instructions for installing Windows 7 using Boot Camp and Parallels separately, but not how to use the Boot Camp install for the VM in Parallels.

Wow, it was much easier than I thought it would be! Downloaded the trial of Parallels. Installed it and pointed it to my Boot Camp partition with Windows 7 installed on it. And minutes later, I'm up and running with Windows 7 in Parallels. Sound didn't work at first, but after I did a Windows Update, it installed the correct driver and now everything is working great. I can't believe how smooth this thing runs within Leopard. I allocated 1GB of RAM for WIndows 7 and it's seems fine so far, but I really haven't run any resource-intensive apps yet.

  • WIndows Vista RC1 (No Drivers)

    Well, hey there.
I've just installed Windows Vista RC1 (March 2009). It's pretty recent.
I went ahead and installed my Boot Camp drivers, but lo and behold nothing installed. I figured it was a botched installation, formatted that partition, and started again.
So, I have tried once again and I am having all kinds of problems. For some reason I can't change the brightness of my monitor or keyboard (both are max all the time) and much of my hardware is not recognized. (By 'much' I mean 'all'. I manually installed a wireless driver.)
Vista installs smoothly, I go about installing the BootCamp drivers and the installation window itself says it's installing each component, but the device manager isn't changing at all. Everything remains "Generic" & "Unrecognized".
I just want Vista to play some games so I can blow off some steam & to do some 3ds Max stuff for college.
Why is this simple process of installation so difficult?
This Apple business is becoming very stressful very quickly.
What I want is some regular old drivers for my stuff to work, there's nothing unique about the hardware so why is it so awkward and frustrating & difficult to get drivers? At best, can someone maybe tell me what kinds of hardware would be in the late 2008 MacBook Pro & how do I get my brightness adjustments to work?
And also, why don't Apple just have individual drivers for download: Nearly every other manufacturer & vendor does (Dell, HP, Sony, Lenovo, Acer, etc.. They use third party hardware and drivers too).

I don't have a MacBook series, and in the folder "Apple" are drivers for various devices.
Try to install directly. If not try using Device Manager to update.
And try running system file checker just for good measure
    *sfc /scannow*
and follow that up with hardware check of your boot partition (schedule chkdsk).
Whether you can install Nvidia drivers manually or not, that would help.
And DO create system restore points and backups.

  • OSX and Windows Vista / 7 master browsers

    Hi all.
I have spent a good deal of time troubleshooting this issue with my OSX machines being unable to browse to my windows machines through the network window of Finder. I currently have 2 Macbooks running 10.5.8 and an iMac running 10.4.11 that all have the same issue (unless I configure OSX to act as a master browser). On the windows side I have 2 XP machines, 1 Vista and 1 Windows 7 RC1. I have configured both Leopard systems to be on the same Windows workground, I am not aware of how to set this on tiger but it doesn't seem to make a difference anyhow.
I have found that the macs can only browse to my windows machines if one of my XP systems is the master browser. If I allow either my 7 or Vista systems to be the master browser my macs cannot browse my windows workgroup at all, and I get mixed results trying to connect by using "Connect to server" and putting in the windows name, but it always works by IP address. To be sure of what I found I disabled the master browser service on all of my windows machines and then left one enabled at a time until I found that my macs can browse fine with XP as the master browser.
I also used the "nbtstat -a <computer name>" command to verify which PC was my master browser from a windows command prompt. Also on my macs I used the command "nmblookup -M -- -," command to confirm my XP machine was the master browser.
I did a little searching on the net and found one site where the person reported similar results:
    http://robmulally.blogspot.com/2009/03/macbook-master-browser-and-my-mate.html
I know that it is also possible for one of my macs to act as a master browser by configuring samba, but I would prefer to use my windows systems as I leave them running most of the time, where as I mainly use my one macbook and it is only on when I use it. I would much rather know the answer why and possibly how to fix it rather than just doing a work around.
Does anyone know what the issue is with OSX not being able to utilize a Windows Vista or 7 master browser? Theres not a whole lot of settings to play with on the windows side, the service is either on or off so I wasn't sure what else to try. I am going to be replacing XP on my systems as soon as the full release of Win 7 is out so I would like to resolve this before then.
If anyone has ideas I would really appreciate it.
    Thanks all,
    Greg

Well I have found a work around, although it is not a perfect solution, it gets the job done and it definitely works, and should work for anyone else who tries it. If anyone does happen to try it I would definitely be interested in your results. Also if anyone knows a lot more about what changed in Vista / 7 / server 2008 where they no longer respond to OSX 'smbserver' requests (explained more below) or a possible 'correct' was to resolve this I would be interested in knowing. I tested the work around by reversing the changes and repeating the steps on both my Vista and 7 systems and it worked in both cases.
I did several tests watching packet traffic with Wireshark on Vista and XP while each was the master browser. I don't know 100% why this works this way, and while I would like to share with you all the packet logs I saved, I do not know of an easy way to strip my computer name info and would prefer not to post this on the internet.
I found that OSX requests a NBSS (NetBIOS Session Service) session by a couple of different 'names' - the IP address, the network class - 192 in this case, and by something called *SMBSERVER. In the case of Windows XP it responds with a 'Positive session response' only when OSX sends the request to *SMBSERVER. In the case of Vista it returns a 'Negative session response, called name not present' to all three recipient names that OSX tries. On XP once the NBSS session is established you then see communication on the LANMAN and SMB protocols.
I found that there is a registry setting to add a NetBIOS alias that you can add to your Vista or Win7 registry under HKEYLOCALMACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters called OptionalNames - make it a string or multistring, once created open it up and put in the IP address of your master browser computer (note that you must have a static IP configured on that system because if it ever changes this work around will stop working).
After you have made the change close out of the registry and go to Start and type Services.msc in the quicksearch bar. In Services scroll down to the 'Server' service and restart it, it will ask to restart Computer Browser and Homegroup Listener (the HG Listener will only be on Win 7), just say Yes. Now you will need to refresh your network adapter on OSX, do this by unplugging and plugging back in the network cable or by disconnecting from your wireless access point and then reconnecting. After a few minutes you should see your windows machines start to show up in Finder on your Mac, it could take as long as thirty minutes for them to show up as the Master Browser builds its cache and then distributes it to other computers. The one thing that is 'bad' about this work around is that you will also see the IP address of your Windows Master Browser in your network list of Finder, this is because of the alias that was created in the registry.
Also note that if you have multiple windows systems on your network you will need to do this work around on EACH computer that you want to be a potential master browser, as well you will need to Stop and Disable the Computer Browser service on any machines you do not want acting as a master browser. Keep in mind to be careful whenever you are editing your registry, always do a full backup of the registry before making changes.
Some other things which may be important (but I did not test yet) -
    1. I have my Mac's set on a 'custom' network type - go to System Preferences | Network and hit the drop down at the top called 'Locations' and go to 'edit locations' and create a new one.
    2. Select your network adapter from the left and go to Advanced | WINS and type in the name of your windows workgroup. If you use both hardwire and wireless ethernet be sure to repeat this step for both adapters
    3. On my Windows Vista machine I have already changed a network security setting which may prevent this from working. By default Vista will force NTLMv2 communication which causes issues trying to connect to apple computers from a windows machine. Although this should only be an issue when connecting to an OSX system FROM Vista, I did observe in doing packet tracing that an NTLMv1 session was negotiated so this may be helpful for some folks (it should not stop the computer list from displaying but may stop you from connecting to computers). Open up 'gpedit.msc' by going to Start and typing it in the quick search bar. Drill down from Local Security Policy | Computer Configuration | Windows Settings | Security Settings | Local Policies | Security Options and then look for the setting 'Network Security: LAN Manager authentication level' - open it up and change the drop down to 'Send LM & NTLM - use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated' and click Apply. Note that in Win7 this setting is disabled by default.
    4. I also had issues restarting the Server service on my Windows 7 machine, sometimes it would fail to restart or report that one service could not be stopped (I didn't record the exact error message). If you get this just restart the system and it will easily take care of the issue.
    5. You may also want to make your Master Browser system the 'preferred' MB on your network to do this go in the Registry to HKLM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Browser\Parameters, open the MaintainServerList string and change the value data to Yes. Then create a new string named 'IsDomainMaster' open it and enter Yes for value data. This will not force the system to always be the the MB, but will make it much more likely if any other windows machines connect to your network in the future.
    6. If you have a WINS server it makes life 100 times easier, just set the WINS server addy on your network preferences on your mac, or have it pushed down through DHCP and life is good, your computers will display in Finders Network pane. But who wants to have a WinNT/2000/2003 server running in their house?
As I said before, there is probably a better way to get this working but I have not found it yet. For now I am satisfied as it is, but I may try doing more searching on this just out of curiosity. I also hope that Apple and/or Microsoft will resolve this issue as this is a very annoying pain point for users and it doesn't help anyone by not having it work, it shouldn't take all the above steps just to be able to click on my Windows machines from a list on OSX and access shares. I know the typical answer from both companies would be "well it is because the other company does not support this or that feature", if thats the case, fix it. Ok, not trying to rant to much, I do hope that some of the developers of either product actually read this and see this as a necessary thing to resolve.
I hope that this helps someone out there looking to resolve this issue as well.

  • Windows 7 RC1 not recognising my fatal1ty headset microphone

    greetings,
I have got a problem, I recently switched to windows 7 RC1 and now I cannot get the mic to work.
    My soundhardware:
    x-fi titanium soundcard
fatal1ty gaming headset (not the USB one)
sound output works normal, windows even recognises that my line-in is active BUT I am getting no input from my microphone at all.
Anyone know what this could be? (I am running the newest beta drivers for my soundcard btw)
    thanks in advance

    Hi Vanilla,
sorry to see that no one has replied to your problem.... I have the same issue here.
I used to have Vista 64bit installed on my Desktop with a Vista that is supposed to be onl;y used for my Dell Laptop......Windows has noticed this and will not let me do updates anymore to my Desktop
So I reinstalled Windows 7 64bit that I had installed a while ago and now I have no mic to use on Teamspeak. My headset (Sennheiser PC350) worked with Vista 64bit. I am just doimng the Auto update from Creative and have also downloaded the beta drivers from Creative for Windows 7. If I have any luck getting my Mic working I will let you know. I would appreciate if you could do the same to me if you get yours working.
Good luck to both of us.....
    Cheers

  • Qosmio G20 and Windows 7

    Hi there,
I've got an old Qosmio G20-115 that uses the RAID controller for the two hard disks. I've tried installing both Windows 7 (RC1) and Windows Vista but I'm always getting stuck at the point of Windows installation detecting the hard drives. After reading various reports from this forum and other sources around the web, I've tried on numerous occassions to get the installation to detect the disks using drivers from various different sources but to no avail.
Is there something more fundamental I'm getting wrong? What should the RAID settings be set to in the BIOS when trying to install an OS? Has anyone managed to get Windows 7 (RC1) working on their G20? Has anyone got some drivers that they've tested and managed to get Vista/Windows 7 onto their G20-115s?
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Boarder,
Thanks for your reply. The G20 is old, but the hardware (aside from the RAID controller) is still very generic isn't it? Is there a specific piece that won't work with Windows 7?
List of drivers I've tried so far (both XP & vista)

All to no avail. I've even tried installing Vista but keep getting the exact same issue - none of the drivers seem to pick up the hard drives.
    Thanks.

  • Windows 7 RC1 installs as  "Not Genuine"

I have successfully installed Windows 7 RC1 on my MacBook Pro. When I start Windows, I get a dialogue box advising me to "Activate Windows Now". However, it won't allow me to Activate - says that my pre-release version of Windows has expired. Windows also shows a static message in the lower right of the desktop which says:
    Build 7100
This copy of Windows is not genuine.
I am using a legal, ligitimate copy of Windows 7 RC1, downloaded from the MicroSoft Windows 7 RC1 website. Windows Update works fine and the Windows OS appears to be working apart from some weirdness with the trackpad and a few other (so far) minor issues.
Is this normal for a Windows 7 installation? If not, what is causing it?

I've been seeing that lately. But when I click on ACTIVATE it takes just fine.
One time I installed on one mobo and moved the drive and had to re-activate. Another time, used the 64-bit key but it was 32-bit version - but activation still took.
Because the download period was extended, my guess is there is a misconfiguration on the part of Microsoft activation servers and coding errors.

  • Windows Vista RC1 + iTunes 7

    Hey,
I was just wondering if anyone knows what i can do with my iTunes. Here's my problem...
I'm using Microsoft Windows Vista RC1 x64. I've installed iTunes and I can use the iPod as an external storage device, as I always could with Windows XP Pro SP2. However, when I add music to the iTunes (from such as a CD that are stored in my Music folder), it "looks" as if it's uploading the song but it isn't.
I have the iPod as manual update, so i drag a track over, and it has the progress bar at the top centre saying "updating ipod, do not disconnect" so that's all well. But once that's finished updating, if i try and search for the track on either iTunes or my iPod, it's nowhere to be seen!
Does anyone have any ideas as to how i could solve this situaion or anything? (Other than restoring my iPod). I just want to really know if iTunes and iPod works with Windows Vista RC1 as i know there are some glitches in some programs running on Vista.
    Thanks,
    Chris.

Ok, uninstalled 7.0, put back 6.0! if anyone has same problem, or any problems with their ipod and itunes and is using 7.0 for god sake use 6.0!! 7.0 is poo! If you can't get access to 6.0, email me: [email protected] ill happily help you out.

  • Bluray locking up in Encore CS4 on Windows 7 RC1

    Greetings,
I am running Adobe CS4 Master Suite on Windows 7 RC1 64 bit OS setup and have a unique issue. When I import my footage rendered from PPro into Encore CS4 everything works fine. Also when I build the project into a DVD I have no issues whatsoever but the moment I change the output to Bluray the computer locks up and doesnt do anything. I have to do a hard reset.
I am using a Sony Bluray burner. Has anyone else faced this issue and able to fix it ?
    Barry

    Barry,
Do not have anything for you directly, but you might also want to post to the Encore Blu-ray sub-forum. There are a lot of BD pros there, and maybe someone can at least ask the right questions about your hardware and workflow.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
[Edit] Two quick questions, have you updated your BD burner's firmware recently? How about an new drivers for the burner to go with Win7RC?

  • Left 4 Dead on Windows 7 RC1

I know it's asking a lot but I'd like to see L4D work in Windows 7 RC1 in Boot Camp
I have RC1 fully patched and the Boot Camp 2.1 drivers for Vista 32 bit installed but my CD keeps getting rejected when I insert it in the drive.
    Thoughts? Lost cause?
    Regards,
    jmb

In the unlikely event that someone has a similar problem, here is the solution:
I was not a Steam expert going into this whole ordeal but a friend of mine dropped some knowledge on me...under My Games you can activate a Steam game online. I entered my valid serial number and the download of Left 4 Dead began without need for the CD
    Neat!

  • Problem with Sessions and window.open

    Hi,
    Hi everyone,
    Help Please!!!
I am working with Sevlet session objects and HTML forms and windows. I have an HTML form for the user to supply a username and password. Once the user clicks submit I need to open another browser window that has no toolbar, no location, no status bar, etc. The user should also be able to go back to that login screen and login again and open a 2nd, 3rd, etc. instance of the application. My problem is that each application is being asigned the same sessionId. I believe it is being asigned to the main login window and thus to the other child windows it opens. Is there a way to work around this? Do I need to make the user open another browser window to login? I need to be able to let the user open multiple instances of the application with unique session ids for each.
Any insight is GREATLY appreciated on this topic. Anything you can tell me about sessions (Java), IE, window.open would help greatly!
    THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!!!
    MA

To achieve this, you must introduce another level of
abstraction to the Servlet specifications. When you
work with JSP/Servlets you use mostly the HttpSession
to handle user related tasks, and the aplication
context, for things that are common to all users. But
inside the HttpSession scope, you want to create
containers that have 'smaller' scope and are uniquely
    identified.
A ipothetical scenario :Let's say that you must have
multiple connections to several databases, on each
database user rights beeing diferrent, and you must be
able to track user actions globaly, and eventualy
capture a 'Close Application event' and close all db.
    connections.
    1. when the user first accesses the login frame create
the HttpSession. In the HttpSession object, store a
Hastable (let's call it 'ConnectionTable'). Each
object in the Hashtable must identify uniqely a
database connection. Now, to create unique identifiers
ids, make the keys in the hashtable java.lang.Long
    objects, created using System.getCurrentTimeMillis().
This guaranties there will be no possible confusion.
From each new open window, on each request to the
server, along with the usefull parameters, send the
connection identifier. When proccessing the request,
select the object from the Hastable wich corresponds
    to the ID.
    2. Now, the values in the ConnectionTable, must act as
the containers that I mentioned in the first
paragraph. The simplest way to do this is to have
again a Hashtable derived class to do the job, wich
exploses methods similar to HttpSession: setAttibute (
Object key, Object value) and getAttibute ( Object
key, Object value). This container may use internally
a Hashtable to store object, and explose only the
getAttribute and setAttribute methods for clarity. Any
way, this is a problem of implementation. Let's call
    this class CustomSession.
    Now, a textual activity diagram:
1 user accesses the main page, you start a new
HttpSession; In the HttpSession object, store the
    ConnectionTable object.
    2. the user enters the userID and pwd and adatabase
name, and a new window is opened. Let's supose the
    data entered is valid.
    3. when you process the login data, you create a new
CustomSession object. you put in it whatever you would
put in your HttpSession. You generate a unique
    identifier using System.CurrentTimeMillis(). Put the
CustomSession object in the ConnectionTable, using the
generated id as key. Send the response.
    ..... later on .....
    100. the user asks for a particular action to be
performed - e.g. a row deletion. The page contains a
form with text field where the user introduces the
row number, a submit button and a hidden input with
    the ID.
    101. you process the data. Get the ID from the request
object, get the ConnectionTable from the session, get
the CustomSession using the ID as key, do whatever
your logic was doing, but obtaining the objects from
    the CustomSession instead of HttpSession
    NicNic,
Very slick idea. I think that it could work and it seems that there would be not security issues because the id that you would store on the client side is the Unique Identifier and not the actual Session Id. Do you forsee any security issues for this implementation?

  • How can I make an icon that links to a webpage that works with Mac and Windows??

    Hi!
I burn CDs with my photos and send them to clients.   Besides the photos folder, I would like to include a file (similar to the .webloc files on the Mac Desktop) that can be clicked and it will be linked to my website - it will open up a browser window and go to my website .      Is it posssible to make one of these icons that works with both Macs and Windows machines?  Thanks!

    Now it works!  Thanks, Denico!
The reason I saved to text:   The first time I followed your instructions, it did not work.   I tried to figure out what I did wrong and saw that you wrote to "save as plain text."   I did not know what this means and there was no option available to save a plain text.  So I looked around and saw "save as stationery" and I guessed that maybe that was what you meant.   And after that, it worked!  But the next thing you know, the icons started duplicating themselves.
I guess I had made a different mistake in the beginning and I fixed it without knowing what it is.
    Thanks for clearing that up.
But just one question.  WHY does saving as "stationery" make an icon duplicate itself?

  • Is Verizon going to acknowlege the problems with FIOS and Windows Vista

For months now, I have been reading the numerous problems Fios internet customers are having with Fios internet/Actiontech Router and Windows Vista and there has been no acknowledgement by Verizon of this current major issue.
I have also experienced the exact same issue for months now since I switched to Verizon FIOS internet. Previously I had Comcast HSI using my Windows Vista laptop.  I had their service for over a year and I NEVER has a problem with the Windows Vista globe icon disappearing and loosing internet connection. The Globe always stayed on and never went away and I never lost connection when I had Comcast
I had Verizon FIOS installed last September with my Windows Vista computer and my wireless internet connection started to drop from day 1 and it has been a daily occurrence for over 5 months now.  It has gotten so bad, I have had to hardwire my laptop to to be able to use the internet uninterrupted.
This is what daily scenario is:
When I turn on my laptop(with Windows Vista, I can initially get full internet access(with the globe on and it says "Local and internet). After about 10 minutes or less, the globe switches to "local only" and I can still get  internet access.  After another 5 or so minutes, a large X covers the globe and I lose internet connection entirely. The actiontech router wireless signal is no longer listed as one of the wireless networks.  The only way for me to regain internet access is either to restart my laptop or reboot the actiontech router.
Numeorus posts here, over by DSL forums(Broadband Reports),Microsoft's website and a few othere websites detail this issue.
I am extremely shocked and surprised that Verizon has not tried to fix this issue by working with both the makers of the Actiontech Router as well as Microsoft to find out what the problem is and how to fix it.
I would just like to reiterate I strongly believe this is primarily a FIOS internet issue since I previously had Comcast HSI for over a year with the same Windows Vista laptop and I NEVER had that problem. Also,  I can connect to my neighbors wireless connection(she uses Comcast HSI) and when I do, the globe stay on all the time on my computer and the internet does not lose connection.
I know that there are a couple of Verizon employees here. Please tell the higher ups who handle FIOS internet that this is a major issue that needs to be resolved as soon as possible.
P.S: Please don't tell me to go by my own router because then, I will have to deal with the issues of setting it up to work with Fios TV and the related VOD, widgets, remote DVR compatability issues to deal with. I don't think I can deal with the additional headaches.

FIOS is short for fiber optics.  fiber optics is different technology than DSL.
With that said, if you search the Microsoft databases for vista issues with fiber optics, (CURRENTLY THERE IS ONLY ONE PROVIDER OF FIBER TO THE HOUSE, that being Verizon, so yes you can also search Vista issues with verizon and\or fios) and you will find that Microsoft already acknowledges this issue with their software.  AND they offer you a fix.
