TC as WDS remote to non-Apple (Belkin modem-router) main?

I have a Belkin ADSL modem with built-in G wireless currently serving an MBP/10.5.3. I've just purchased a 512GB Time Capsule and have managed to set it up for wireless backup with some swearing.
I would now like to use the TC as a WDS remote to the Belkin main as I've a second wired Mac I'd like to connect to the TC for internet access, but so far have been unable to get this arrangement to work.
I've enabled Wireless Bridge/WDS in the Belkin and added TC's MAC address to its list of permitted clients. I've then added the Belkin's connection details to TC's AirPort>WDS>Wireless pane and entered the Belkin's MAC address into TC's AirPort>WDS>WDS Main field. Checked the settings and it all looks like it should work, but when the TC restarts it complains that it can't find the WDS or internet connection.
Apple docs are unclear on whether or not a TC is capable of connecting to a non-Apple network in WDS mode. (Though if not, why not?) Has anyone managed a similar arrangement, and if so, how? Alternatively, does anyone know if such an arrangement definitely won't work, in which case I won't waste any more time on it?
Thanks

I'd been having a similar problem. I was trying to extend a network using my time capsule; the original network is run off a 'BT HomeHub' router provided by the UK ISP British Telecom (I'm not sure what the actual model is, I think some kind of Thompson Speedtouch). I knew the BT router was capable of supporting WDS and dchao99 was absolutely correct (thanks for the really useful post) in that when I turned all encryption off the devices could talk. From what I've seen, this is the case for most non-apple routers that support WDS.
After looking around on other message boards, the encryption problem seems to be whether the routers allow you input passwords using ascii or hex. The TC will only let you put in a WEP password using 128-bit ascii (thirteen characters). Unfortunately it doesn't tell you that explicitly. The problem I'd been having when setting up WDS was that my non-apple router was asking for the password in hex; a 128-bit WEP password is 13 ascii characters but 26 characters hen translated into hex. So what I'd been doing was deciding on a 13 character pass key for the TC, and putting the same pass key into my non-apple router; the reason the routers couldn't talk is because the two passwords were different when the latter is read as a hex. Once I'd twigged this I just translated the 13 character ascii key into a 26-character hex string using a translator on the net, stuck that in my non-apple router, and now WDS works like a dream.
The WEP coding problem seems to be a really common reason why people can't get WDS to work with TC, and so if you're having trouble I'd suggest the following:
1) turn all protection off on all your routers and try WDS to see if they are in fact compatible.
2) if they work without protection, set your TC to WEP protection and make up a 13 character ascii password
3) translate this ascii string into a 26 character hex string using a translator and write it down (you can find one at http://centricle.com/tools/ascii-hex ; just remove the '%' symbols from the translated string)
3) in your non-apple router make sure you select 128-bit WEP encryption, figure out whether it wants a 13 letter ascii code or a 26 letter hex code, and use the appropriate one. If you can't tell which it wants you'll have to try both.

Your will need to perform a Factory Default Reset on the TIme Capsule to clear out the current network settings and then reconfigure it to "join" your wireless network using the AirPort Utility setup application.
To perform the Factory Default Reset on the Time Capsule....
Pull the power cord from the back of the device
    Wait a few moments
Hold in the reset button on the back of the Time Capsule and keep holding it an additional 8-10 seconds while you simultaneously plug the power cord back in to the Time Capsule
Release the reset button after the hold period and allow 25-30 seconds for the Time Capsule to restart to a slow, blinking amber light
    On your Mac.....
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
    Click Continue
Follow the guided setup and choose the "join" option when it appears duriing the setup
You will need to know the exact type of wireless security that the Belkin router is using to enter this information during the setup of the Belkin. Otherwise, the Time Capsule cannot join the network, and you will receive an error message after the configuration process.

  • Set up Time Capsule w/ belkin modem/router AND DSL splitter

    G'day,
I've got an existing network set up and would like to add the Time Capsule into the network. I'd like to use my current hardware if possible but am willing to purchase stuff if I need to.
There are some posts on my model of Belkin modem/router, but it didn't really help me.
    Here are my machines:
    1) PC - desktop (ethernet networking card, Windows 7,
    2) Laptop (wireless networking, Windows 7)
    3) Macbook Air (wireless networking)
    4) iPhone (wireless networking)
    Here are my hardware:
    A) Wall socket
    B) DSL splitter (3 x ports - port for line, port for phone, port for modem)
    C) Cordless phone
    D) Belkin modem/router (model number F5D7633-4A - 1 x ADSL port, 4 x Ethernet cable ports)
    E) Time Capsule
Here is my current set up:
Wall socket > phone cable > Splitter > phone cable to phone, phone cable to modem/router > ethernet cable from modem/router to PC
This solution gives me internet access via the ethernet cable to the PC and via the Belkin modem/router wirelessly to the Laptop. However, I haven't been able to connect my Macbook Air to this network yet - it doesn't seem to work.
So my question is, how can I include my Time Capsule into the network. Will I need another modem? I read about a bridge but I have no idea what that is or where to find that setting.
Also, can someone explain how to get my Macbook Air to connect to the network?
Can someone talk me through exactly what extra hardware I need and what I need to do to set it all up?
    Cheers,
    Chris

    Hi Bob,
Thanks for chiming in. Could you talk me through how to do that? I'm a numpty and just haven't figured out which ports to plug which cords into, etc. If you or someone else could dumb it really right down that would be sweet.
Also, the Belkin is a modem/router, not a router. I am under the assumption that I need a modem to access the internet and that the Time Capsule is just a router.
    Is that right?
    Chris

  • MacBook with non-Apple USB Modem

    Greetings,
I just got a MacBook. However, it was without an int modem. Before I go and buy the more expensive Apple USB modem, can other brands usb modem usable? Thanks.

If you'd like instructions on change your USB back to a previous version, check out the link on this posting.

I've had no problems since doing this. It's not really modem problem but rather a software problem.

  • Alternative Configuration For Apple TV & Modem/Router?

Right now I have my 2wire 2701 modem/router connected via ethernet to my imac computer and I am connected wirelessly (b/g) to the apple tv in my family room. Wireless reliability is spotty and slow due to the routers b/g capability. What I am wondering is this: Can I reverse the setup? Can I connect the apple TV to the modem/router via ethernet and connect to the imac via wireless. I have a phone jack with dsl/phone filter right next to the apple TV so this is entirely possible. Will the machines sync properly in this setup?
    Thanks for any advice.

It doesn't matter how they are connected, as long as they are both connected to your local network you shouldn't have any problems syncing. You may find that your ATV network connection is more reliable if it's by Ethernet cable.

  • WDS relaying open non Apple networks

I'm wondering if my Airport Extreme will connect to this open Belkin network (I've recently found at the studio where I work) and using WDS extend the internet signal and relay it onto my computers. I'm fairly sure this isn't possible. As all the preferences in WDS talk of 'Airport ID's' to connect to. I'm guessing that WDS is an Apple only thing and maybe isn't universal relaying language. But it's worth asking.
So any thoughts or ideas to take best advantages of this open network would be welcome.

    Short answer: No.
    Long Answer:
Only Apple and Buffalo officially support WDS that I know of. And although WDS works within a set of 802.11 standards, each manufacturer's implementation of WDS is different since WDS allows for this flexibility. Of course the result is interoperability issues.
Certain manufacturer's wireless base stations do allow for something called client mode. Basically the base station acts like a wireless card in your laptop. Very useful for connecting to other open wireless networks in your area, then everything on your end can be wired or wireless, but all within your control. I do not believe Apple has this feature.

  • Connecting AE to non-apple wireless adsl router (Belkin)

    Hi,
I have an Wireless VoIP ADSL router (Belkin) that was provided by my ISP that I use for my home phone and Internet access. It is only a/b/g capable. I currently use it to wirelessly connect to the Internet and other computers on the wireless/wired network from my Macbook Pro. My Macbook Pro has my iTunes and music on it.
I am wondering if I can purchase the AE to plug in by my stereo and connect it wirelessly to the Belkin so that I can stream music to the stereo from the Macbook Pro via the Belkin (eg. Macbook -> Belkin -> AE). I would also like to use the Ethernet port on the AE by the stereo to connect a media center into the wireless network (the media center only has an ethernet port - no wireless built in).
If this won't work will I be able to just run the AE as a 2nd wireless AP and connect to it directly from the Macbook Pro when I want to play tunes through the AE? This would not be ideal as I would in theory only be able to connect to either the AE for music streaming or the Belkin for Internet access.
Can the Macbook connect to the Belkin via 802.11a or g for instance and the AE using 802.11n at the same time?
    Thanks,
    Graham

Yes, you should be able to do this with the newer 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn). Because you have a requirement to have the AXn's Ethernet port enabled, you would just need to reconfigure the AXn as a ProxySTA.
To activate ProxySTA, you must set up the Express to join a wireless network and then enable the Allow Ethernet Clients setting; both settings are located in the Wireless tab of AirPort Utility. The feature should work with any wireless network: a, b, g, or n; and 5GHz or 2.4GHz. (Note that the Express, which ships with firmware 7.3, must also be updated to firmware 7.3.1 for this feature to appear.)

  • Dual band network using non-apple Wirless G router (dlink or linksys)?

I now have a pure 5GHz N network with 2 Extreme base stations, Mac Pro and Macbook on it, but want to make another 2.4GHz b/g network (to preserve the speed of 5 GHz N).
I currently have the b/g working using the Airport Express as a bridge but its range is limited compared to other g routers I have (with external boosted antennae), plus it was an additional expense.
Any clues as to how to use a 3rd party router like a dlink DI-624 or Linksys WTR54G? I tried hooking them to the Airport Extreme's LAN port to the Dlink WAN port w/ DHCP. It will share the internet connection but won't access the local network (since it is on a different subnet eg 192.168.0.1 on dlink vs 192.168.1.x on Airport).
I can't get the Dlink router to use the same subnet as the extreme. Suggestions?

    Duane:
Thanks again. 2 for 2 (I have one more to ask, separate thread).
To help others, I've explicitly documented the steps I took with my Dlink DI-624. Here are the steps I did:
    1. Reset to factory settings with the pin button on back.
    2. Connect dLink WAN port to one of the Airport Extreme's LAN ports
    3. Confirm I can connect via 802.11g using my Macbook (choosing the 'dlink' SSID)
    4. Type 192.168.0.1 to get to the dlinks' admin pages
    5. Change the dlink's admin password, Apply
    6. Change the network SSID and set the wireless mode (b/g or g only, etc), choose the encryption level (WPA2) and set the password, Apply
    7. Wait for the router to reboot. Now, on the Macbook choose the new SSID above and enter the password
    8. Log in again to 192.168.0.1 - this time you'll need the password set for the router in step 5
    9. Now, set the dlink's DHCP server to Disabled. Apply and let the router reboot.
    10. Move the ethernet connection from the dlink WAN port to one of its LAN ports
    11. Choose the new SSID and voila: full internet access and local LAN access (confirm you're now on the same subnet and can see local network resources).

  • Which non Apple Router to extend AX?

    Guys
Spent some time many months ago looking into whether an AX can extend a network via WDS from a non Apple router. Anyway looking again now and all searches are saying this can't be done.
Anyway I am positive I read there are one or two modem/routers - possibly Netgear and/or Linksys that can work with an AX to extend but can't find these threads.
Is this now impossible? (new implementation of Apple WDS?) Was it once possible? (Just to confirm I'm not going insane).
    Cheers

For WDS with non-AirPort routers the following, that were gleaned from the Internet, are known to work:
    o Linksys WRT54G or WRT54GS (not v5)
    o Belkin F5D7230-4 and F5D7231
    o BT Voyager 2091
    o Netgear WGR614 v6
    o Buffalo WGR-G54

  • Extend an existing non-Apple wireless network using an Extreme base station

I have an existing wireless network via a Belkin modem/router. I would like to add my Airport Extreme base station to this existing wireless network, however this appears difficult. Can anyone help me please?

Hello IanWhite. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
I have an existing wireless network via a Belkin modem/router. I would like to add my Airport Extreme base station to this existing wireless network, however this appears difficult.
Unfortunately, most non-AirPort routers are not compatible with Apple's implementation of Wireless Distribution System (WDS)...so it very unlikely that your Belkin router can be extended wirelessly with the AirPort Express Base Station (AX).
The few that are known to work are:
    o Linksys WRT54G or WRT54GS (not v5)
    o Belkin F5D7230-4 and F5D7231
    o BT Voyager 2091
    o Netgear WGR614 v6
    o Buffalo WGR-G54
Is your Belkin one of the models in the above list?

  • Can I use non-apple earphones with radio remote?

I have a new Ipod 3g and want to buy the radio remote. Must I use the earbuds supplied with the radio remote or can I use non-apple earbuds and earphones? Will I still get good radio reception with a non-apple earphone?

Yes you can. I use Sennheiser PX100's and they work just fine.
Plug the headphones into the remote rather than the iPod to get the best reception.

  • Create a WDS with Airport Extreme and Belkin Pre-N

I would like to setup a WDS using my Airport Extreme Base as the main router and a Belkin Wireless Pre-N (F5D8230-4) as a remote client. I have done this successfully using Linksys WRT54G and WRT54GS routers (using Sveasoft's firmware upgrade which has WDS), but haven't been able to get a good configuration for the Belkin, nor have I been able to locate a firmware for it.
At this point I'm not concerned about encryption, so leave that variable out. I just can't determine what settings the Belkin router needs to work. I've tried a lot of combinations based on my experience with the Linksys models.
    Thanks,
    Wes

The Linksys models you reference are some of the few items that will work with Apple's implementation of WDS.
I don't believe that the Belkin device has that ability.

  • Using the Airport Base as a WDS on a non-mac network

I have a cable modem (Optimum Online) and a wireless router (Netgear WGR814) connected to my PC desktop. And I use a Powerbook 12" G4 to connect wirelessly to the network.
Can I use an Airport Extreme Base station as a remote station on the Netgear network to extend the range of the Netgear router so that my laptop works on a different floor?
I installed the Airport software onto my PC. What settings do I need?

No, the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) or the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) do not allow for extending a wireless network using WDS with non-Apple routers. There have been only a few examples where this has been accompished with Linksys routers.

  • Can you connect an Apple TV to a non-Apple Wi-Fi network?

I just purchased an AirPort express with the hopes of using it for AirTunes while being controlled by my iPhone 3G as the remote. After a number of setup issues Apple support told me that I need an Apple wireless router if I want to use AirTunes and surf the internet at the same time. AirPort express can't join an existing non-Apple Wi-Fi network, it needs to create it's own one. (This means I have to disconnect from my internet connection in order to listen to AirTunes.) Does Apple TV have this same limitation, or can you just connect Apple TV to an existing non-Apple Wi-Fi network? (I'm pretty sure that Apple TV has AirTunes too.)
My AT&T U-verse already provides me with a wireless base station; I don't want to have to purchase another one and have redundant routers.

    yes of course.
you can connect it to any wifi network (assuming you know the wifi key of course).
the host itunes library will need to be accessible on that network though.
