TC Electronics Konnekt 8 Firewire Audio problems

Hey Everyone:
I've been experiencing problems with my Konnekt 8 Firewire audio interface since I purchased it. I've been getting audio dropouts on my output while recording with GarageBand 4. On top of that, I've been experiencing the odd click noise while recording. After months of reading/posting on TC Electronics forums (and other firewire audio forums), I get the sense that this might not be a audio interface driver issue. It might be an Apple Firewire Core Audio issue. Am I correct? I'm on OSX 10.4.11. I've read mostly leopard users have these audio problems, but is the latest and greatest tiger core audio driver the same as leopards?

"But it just seems like many firewire audio devices aren't working as advertised on OS X these days."
Who is doing the advertising and which products?
No matter what product you are buying or platform that you are buying the product for Google is often your friend.
The point that I was making about the TC Electronics Konnekt 8 Firewire Audio device is that all users, even on Windows, are experiencing problems.
One of the musician's laments is that often operating systems such as OSX will be updated and the manufacturer of an external device will not upgrade their drivers in a timely manner if at all. Having no cash to buy new equipment said musician often operates old hardware in order to stay compatible.

  • Firewire audio problems with OS X 10.5.6

    Hello,
I’m experiencing audio problems with Firewire 400 on my Macbook running Mac OSX 10.5.6.
I’ve got a 2.4Ghz IntelCore 2 Duo with 4 GB RAM and 59 GB available on the internal HD.
It’s hooked up to a brand new Mackie D.4 mixer with 2 Firewire outputs. The problems occur on both Firewire outputs.
I’ve installed automatically from the software update (which I will never do again) to 10.5.6. I never tried the D.4 with 10.5.5 so I can’t tell if the problems occur there also.
The main problem is that after a couple of minutes of recording the sound starts to break up and get really distorted. After a while the sound comes back again.
The second problem is that Soundtrack Pro or Audacity don’t get any audio input from the D.4, although audio input is clearly visible in System Preferences – Sound.
The only sound program that works with all 14 Firewire channels is Ableton, but also in Ableton the distortion occurs.
An example of the distortion can be checked here:
    http://media.kaalslag.com/firewire-distortion-problem-mackieD4+Macbook.mp3
I’ve roamed several forums and sites to solve the problem and I tried these solutions:
I updated again to 10.5.6. with the full combo download from the Apple site. Restarted. Problem still there.
I shut Airport off, because lots of sites mentioned problems with Airport conflicting with audio/firewire. Didn’t work.
I did the work around with shutting the Macbook off, disconnecting the D.4, restarting the Macbook, opening Audio/Midi Setup, connecting the D.4 again, toggling the format frequencies a couple of times. Again, no use.
Right now I’m using my “old” Macbook again to record from vinyl. This one is still running on OSX 10.4.11. No problems so far.
I’ve had the distortion problems occuring before with an USB interface. Hoped that the Mackie Firewire would solve the problem, but it seems now that there’s a serious audio Firewire problem which is still not solved in OSX 10.5.
Any help, tips and/or a work around would be much appreciated. Thanks!

You could try using another computer in Target Disk mode (as an "external HD"), or you can connect the firewire cable and disconnect all other network cables (turning off airport). Then on each computer go to the "Network" system preferences and select "Built-in Firewire" from the list of ports and choose "Manually" from the drop-down menu next to "Configure". Enter the following IP addresses and subnet masks, apply the changes.
    _Computer 1_
    IP Address: 192.168.1.1
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
    _Computer 2_
    IP Address: 192.168.1.2
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
After those ip addresses are entered and you've clicked "Apply", ensure that for both computers you have file sharing enabled (done in the "Sharing" system preferences), and then check the Finder sidebar to see if the computers can see each other (their names should appear under "Shared" in the sidebar--if not, try restarting).
If the computers dont appear (even after restarting), using the "Connect To" option that's available in the Finder's "Go" menu. In there, to connect to another computer enter it's IP address as follows:
    afp://IP_ADDRESS
If you're on the computer with the ip address of 192.168.1.1, you would enter 192.168.1.2 as "IP_ADDRESS". The "afp" is the protocol (just like "http" for web), and stands for "Apple Filing Protocol"...Apple's file sharing protocol.

  • Mute / Firewire Audio Problem

Hi all, I have a strange problem that just started today:
Hitting the “Mute” keyboard shortcut key (F10) is causing a loud pop from the output of my Apogee Ensemble firewire audio interface.
    What I’ve learned so far:
    * It happens using either my wireless or wired Apple keyboard. It also pops when checking and un-checking the audio output “Mute” box in System Preferences
    * It pops only when the Ensemble is selected. When I have the internal audio selected in System Preferences it works fine.
    * The strangest part is when I mute or unmute the Ensemble, the system’s normal gray box speaker icon that appears then fades out on the lower third of the screen has a “ghost.” Half-a-second after the gray box first appears, a SECOND gray box can be seen right behind it. Half-a-second after the first box fades out, the second box is still there for half-a-second longer. This behavior also only happens when the Ensemble selected -- the gray box behaves as normal with the internal audio selected.
    * I've reset the Ensemble, rest the PRAM, repaired permissions, even checked Keyboard Shortcuts for any wierdness. Nothing.
Odder still, all this just started happening today with no changes to my setup whatsoever. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Hey there,
First off, I experienced this problem after one of the major updates to the Ensemble firmware (about the same date as you posted....). It makes me really nervous using my monitors at high volume... Anyway, I'd imagine the pop is the waveform jumping from it's position to 0 with no fade or transition. As to the "ghosts" you're seeing, I believe that is an overlap of visual feedback from OS X and Maestro simultaneously. At the very least you can know you're not the only one?
Finally, on this same issue, when you mute do all your input/output meters on the ensemble FREAK OUT until you un-mute?

  • Mac OSX Mavericks 10.9 firewire audio problem on RME Fireface 800, MOTU 828 Mk II and Apogee Duet on late 2013 iMac i7

I just got the late 2013 iMac 3.5GHz Intel Core i7 and all my firewire based audio interfaces do not work properly although I upgraded to the latest drivers. iTunes or Youtube can play for a short and then there are unbrearable digital noises.
Apogee Duet is slightly better that can play for a few minutes. Then it may have short pause or digital noises. I need to reset the "Sample Rate" to other values to get it work again.
MOTU 828 mk II and RME Fireface 800 are having the most serious problems. Alternating the sample rate can sometimes help but often I need to reboot the iMac to get it work again. However, it works for only 1-2 minutes before the digital noises.
These are the software/drivers I installed:
    - Apogee Maestro 2 version 2.8.8
    - MOTU Universal Audio Installer for Mac OS X version 1.6.58373 (8/20/2013)
    - RME version 3.19, firmware 2.77
I connect the fireware through Apple Thunderbolt to Firewire convertor.
These drivers are supposed to work with 10.9 but they don't. Anyone can help or share experience?

I've read in other forums that there are two issues that is causing this problem of chopping audio and freezing interfaces.  One has to do with USB 2.0 /USB 3.0 issues in OS.  The other seems to be an issue with the Fusion drive.
The fix for the fusion drive issue that has been shared online is to either:
Option #1.  Don't use the fusion drive and create an external boot drive clone (either SSD or standard HD) and use as your primary drive (completely surpassing the internal fusion drive).
Option #2.  Split the internal fusion drive.  From there you can use them as two separate logical drives.  Load your OS on one of the drives (SSD or HD).   http://www.macworld.com/article/2015664/how-to-split-up-a-fusion-drive.html
Before, you do any of the above, make sure that you backup your current system setup.
I just received my imac (2013) with 3TB fusion and I plan on trying option #1.  I bought a 3TB external USB drive which I plan to clone after I have the machine running.  Once I clone the internal drive, I will test how the machine runs from both the internal fusion and the external to prove if this addresses the audio clipping/stopping problem.  Hopefully, Apple will find a fix for this.
It is really a dissapointment that a brand new $2500+ machine and software was not tested to perform something that my 2008 MacBookPro and my home built Window XT machine (circa 2003) did without issue.  I wished that I would have checked the forums about these issues before I purchased the machine.
You can do some searches online and find even more detail discussions on this topic.

  • Firewire Audio Problems with Snow Leopard?

    Hi
Recently bought a brand new Mac mini. I hooked up my Tascam FW1804 after installing the SL specific driver (1.70). Problem seems to be that I cannot get the Tascam to appear in SL unless I unplug and plug back in the FW1804. Very strange...
Additionally performance is terrible and midi connection is very erratic.
    Anyone has similar problems?
    Cheers

    Hi,
Thanks for the reply and sorry for the delay in responding. It is AC powered.
As a new twist, it looks like firing up the system profiler helps detecting the interface. Feels like the firewire is completlely asleep when powering up and you'd need to peek it to start it up.
    Strange ...
    Cheers

  • 10.4.11 external firewire audio device noise/distortion

    Hi
Subsequent to upgrading to 10.4.11 I now have persistent noise from my external firewire audio device. It's an Edirol FA-101 and worked perfectly in 10.4.10 and earlier. I tried replacing the firewire cable with no effect.
The FA-101 is a class compliane device so uses Apples built in firewire audio drivers.. has anyone else had firewire audio problems with 10.4.11?
    Thanks
    Mark

No I doubt it... FW can be strange sometimes.
Look in Sytem Profiler, if it says you don't have FW at all, then remove all power from the iMac, let it set a few hours to Drain down, plug back in everthing.

  • T.C. Electronics Konnekt 8 Garage Band compatible?

I just got the T.C. Electronics Audio Interface called Konnekt 8. It came with software for System 10.4 called "TC Near Control Panel". I am using a Powerbook G4 and Garageband 3.04. Does anyone know how I can use this with Garageband?
It came with Cubase LE, but it looks too complicated, so I would rather use Garageband.
    Thank you

The volume control for the channels is disabled
    This is normal:

You need to post more info, we know it doesn't work, but we don't know anything about what you've done.

  • FireWire Audio Heat Problem (Macbook Pro, Late 2008) VIDEO proof

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JYHnX3CGUoo
After a lot of hours of trying to figure out WHY my macbook pro heats up (a lot) when i connect my newly bought Apogee Duet firewire audio interface, i found out that actually what was happening is that there are CPU spikes of extremely short period (so short that Activity Monitor and iStat could not catch) constantly spiking the CPU frequency from 1596Mhz (Idle) to 2572Mhz (Maximum). Apart from the frequency spike there is also a VOLTAGE spike from 1.0v to 1.15.
I know that this is normal due to speedstep technologies and such BUT the rapid spiking and alterations of frequency and voltage ALWAYS happening when i have my Firewire audio plugged is not normal to me. There is nothing else running, everything's idle and i only plug the firewire interface.
Also this is not happening when i restrict OSX from loading AppleFWAudio.kext (either by deleting, moving, renaming it). I connect the firewire audio interface, the leds are illuminating but no heat problem (thats to show you that is not because the interface is self-powered)
Whats going on seems to be similar with the problems occurred after Mac Pro Audio Update to users that was using FW audio devices. They were hearing a sine noise coming from their macpro and propably that was because the same thing was happening. Constant spikes of voltage to the CPU. I dont have a macpro thought so i cant apply the update Apple released for that issue.
Also, my macbook is using Lucent / Agere (LSI) firewire chipset (the particular and known revision 6) but i dont think that this is the cause since Apogee didnt have any problems with the chipset
Info: The app im using to monitor the Frequency and Voltage is CoolBook, can be found here: http://www.coolbook.se/CoolBook.html

Firewire Audio disconnected / or AppleFWAudio.kext unloaded = Idle temp arround 50 celcius (iStat)
Firewire Audio Connected with AppleFWAudio.kext loaded = Idle temp arround 60 celcius (iStat)
If theres a possibility that this is due to bus powered firewire device (cause i have an external FW hard drive that is self-powered and temps are not rising when i connect it) then AppleFWAudio.kext maybe manages something with bus powered firewire.
Maybe when i have the interface connected but the kext not loaded the mA sucked by the interface are too little for causing a temp rise but by the time the kext is loaded and the interface is converting audio the mA required tops up so the temp rise comes from the mA load on the firewire bus and not the cpu itself.
*Even if that's the case, the rapid spikes of throttling on the cpu by the time the Firewire Audio interface is connected bothers me. This isn't something that should normaly happen on an idling machine.*

  • Problem with FireWire audio interface (Edirol FA-66)

I am experiencing the following problem with my FireWire Audio interface via Edirol FA-66. At unpredictible moments the 'Digital In' LED starts blinking, and after that the audio signal stops working. I do not know if Logic is the culprit, since it also happens now and then with iTunes
Note: there are digital in/outs connected.
Only shutting down the Edirol and restarting the iMac G5 resolves the problem, be it only temporary: after a while the phenomenon shows up again.
    Extremely ennoying.
    What could be the culprit?
    Bonkie
    Belgium
    Earth

Hi Patrick, I don't know that specific interface but could it possibly be that the flashing LED also act as an alert for when the firewire connection has gone down?
Reason I suggest this is I have the same thing from with my iMac & focusrite saffire Le, where i lose audio now & then, & when it happens if i check in the interfaces software control panel it always has a 'firewire connection error' - I then just have to unplug & replug-in the interface to re-establish the firewire conection. Just a thought but maybe it's worth consulting the edirol manual/tech support to see if this is the case ref the LED function?

  • Does 2 firewire audio and video interface can work together  on FCP ?

    hello,
My audio interface is a TC Electronic Konnekt 24D
my video interface is a Canopus ADVC 110
my hard drives are plugged in firewire too
and I use Final Cut Pro 5.0.4
So, the konnekt is recognized by FCP only when the Canopus is not plugged. And even then, the audio sometimes drop out and sometimes causes the app to crash, so that I have to trash the preferences
When I plug the Canopus, the Konnekt 24D is recognised by OS X but not FCP
I want to use the voice over tool with the konnekt 24D, so what should I do ?
Does 2 firewire audio and video interface can work together ?
If so, maybe I only have a driver problem from TC Electronic.
But if not, I have to change this interface. Let me know if only RME, MOTU, Presonus and Edirol work, as it is said on apple's webpage for hardware compatibility
    thanks
    eMac G4 1,25 Ghz Mac OS X (10.3.9)
    eMac G4 1,25 Ghz 1 Go RAM DDR   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

The 1082 does show up as a possible input when I open
    the VO tool.
Ok. So an audio interface can be plugged to FCP without crashing the app. Because of the Konnekt driver problem, I wasn't shure of this.
I use my Aja box for export & external monitoring.
All my audio sources run back into the Tascam and I
use the analog mixer in the 1082 to monitor different
    sources.
When I view external video, the audio follows it to
    keep sync.
that's exactly what I want with other I/O interfaces. I'd like to monitor video with the canopus ADVC 110, and monitor audio with the Konnekt 24D (or another interface if this one is not compatible)
I also imput dailies with a deck or a camera (DV or HDV) but that's not the point here.
I want to imput audio with the Konnekt 24D because of its audio quality. Not audio sync to video dailies. But voice over, in sync with FCP video playback (for me, tha ADVC 110)

  • High pitch squeal related to Firewire audio device after 10.6.2 audio patch

So the recent Mac Pro audio update 1.0 (applied on 10.6.2) has reduced my CPU temperature with audio playback (Presonus Firebox Firewire audio interface) and that is great. Also haven't had any machine crashes (grey screens) recently which is also great.
The problem is that when the Firebox is plugged into the firewire port of the Mac Pro there is a constant high pitched whistle of slightly oscillating frequency. If I unplug the Firebox the whistle goes away in a few seconds.
After prolonged use in a quiet room (the kind of room you need for audio recording / mixing work!) the noise is enough to drive me crazy.
I read a post on another forum with other people having the same problem. Can anyone comment here on seeing the same thing? Is there any known work around or fix for this?
When the CPU is under heavy load (e.g. H.264 compression etc.) the noise subsides only to return when there is normal load (i.e. half a dozen apps running).
    Help!
    Thanks

So I was able to back out the update using "Kext Helper b7" and the original IOPlatformPluginFamily.kext and AppleHDA.kext files from a backup before applying the update. It's pretty easy - just drop the two files onto Kext Helper, hit "go" and then reboot.
My ears are no longer in constant pain and I can actually use the Mac Pro again albeit running quite hotter than before.
This is not a fix Apple. The problem looks unrelated to a specific device based on the posts in this thread. Please issue a usable fix for the Mac Pro Audio performance issue.

  • Digital distortion on external firewire audio Edirol FA-101 and 10.4.11

    Hi
Not sure if this is the right forum but I have an Edirol FA-101 external firewire audio unit and it seems like prior to installing 10.4.11 update for Tiger the audio was perfect. Now however I get a constant level of what sounds like digital distortion even without any audio sources playing out of my FA-101.. I saw the forum/support notes regarding audio problem with 10.4.10.. just wondered if anyone has similar experiences..the audio device does not have it's own drivers but uses the mac built in firewire audio support.
    Thanks

that's what outputs 3 and 4 are there for. You can't control one stereo output to do two different things at the same time... it says in the edirol manual that the headphone jack outputs the same as output 1 and 2 from the back.
Therefore if you want a separate stereo output pair to connect your speakers to, you must use outputs 3 and 4.
Edirol didn't make the unit for the pc - actually the hardware was designed for the mac (hence it's core audio compatibility out of the box).
Edirol's fa-101 and fa-66 (which I own) are mac product which just happen to work on the pc thanks to the driver they had to write after the fact to support windows xp. Plug the unit into a pc without the driver and nothing happens. plug it into a mac running osx and it's automagically configured for low latency, highest performance, midi and audio in and out.
Have fun owning the best interface you can get for the mac for the money!

  • Unstable timeline movement using FireWire audio (MOTU 828mk3)

I'm using a 32 bit system with Windows 7 Home Premium and Service Pack 1. An AVI that I captured with my DV camera will not play in Premiere Elements. I can see the time line making a loop every 10 seconds or less whenever I use FireWire for audio. If I use Windows Sound Card, it plays well.
The same AVI plays well on Windows Media Player with or without the FireWire audio interface.
I'm new to Adobe but have used AVID Liquid Pro before. It seems like I'm missing a CODEC but I'm not sure if that is the problem. NOTHING plays right with the FireWire Audio selected regardless of the many settings I have tried.
    Thanks,
    Joseph Balsamo

    I'm using Premiere Elements 12.
The 828mk3 is a FireWire audio interface. I'm actually using IEEE 1384 connection vs USB. I use it for my audio (PC to mixing board) mostly for Sonar.
I found out today during a chat with Adobe that Premiere Elements does not support MOTU. That must be my problem.
I am not trying to capture, just play an AVI in the timeline. The timeline does not move smoothly enough to do that without audio and video problems. However, the same AVI will play in the organizer of Premiere Elements. Also the same AVI also plays in Media Player. I also have no problems with audio or video using YouTube or Vimeo or any video on the web with Chrome or IE 11.
I am using Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit with Service Pack 1.
    828mk3 Hybrid Firewire Audio Interface
I am told that Premiere Pro can support MOTU. I just don't have a 64 bit system for it yet.
    Thanks,
    Joseph Balsamo

  • IChat AV doesn't work with M-Audio Firewire audio interface

I saw similar topics to this but none dealing with a Firewire audio interface and none with exactly the same problem.
Every other piece of software I use works with the M-Audio Firewire Solo, except for iChat AV. When it is the selected output device and I start a video chat with someone, I get just horrible, loud static when the person on the other end speaks.
Running 10.4.10 on a Macbook Pro (2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo).
Does anyone know of incompatibility issues with iChat and Firewire interfaces?

In Audio MIDI Setup (In applications/Utilities) the setting for my Mic is 44100khz 1Ch 16bit.
The Internal Audio connection also shows up at 44100Khz 2Ch 16bit
Are you looking in the same place or in the device itself ?
I would set it in the Audio MIDI Setup and then make sure it responds in System Preferences > Sound > Input tab.
Once the Blue bar moves to at least halfway there I would then check iChat > Preferences > Video Section to see if the green bar under the Vido pics is moving.
