TC ethernet port question

Hello. My apologies if this has been covered before, but I'm having difficulties connecting one of my computers via ethernet to a new 2TB TC. Yesterday I replaced my old TC by copying its configuration file and importing it while setting up the new unit. This seems to work out fine for all the wireless and wired clients except for one, my Mac Pro, which is connected to an ethernet port on the new TC. I can't seem to find a way to diagnose what's gone wrong. Network Preferences recognizes that the ethernet cable is plugged into the Mac, but it has a very different IP address than the other clients and can't connect to the network or the Internet. I suspected either a port on the new TC wasn't working right or something was wrong with the cable itself (though everything was fine before the TC replacement) but after reordering the ethernet port connections and successfully connecting my laptop to the network through the same ethernet cable my Mac Pro was on, I realized all the connections appear to be fine and the problem is likely the Mac Pro.
I eventually connected an old Airport Express to the same cable and was able to bridge the network to the Mac Pro wirelessly, but I'd love to figure this out if there's something I'm doing wrong on the Mac Pro (I'm definitely no networking expert). If it's potentially the built-in ethernet that's the problem I'd like to know that too, before my warranty runs out.
If anyone's got any ideas I'd really be grateful.

I should add I've tried Network Diagnostics and Network Assistant to try a new location, without any luck.

Check the connectivity leds come on.. both on the TC and the Mac Pro. although I am not sure if it has connectivity led.
Try forcing the network card to a specific speed.. slower being better.. to test at least. Set to 100mbit full duplex. You do this via the system preferences for that network card.
If you still have the old TC plug the Mac into it.. if it works set it to bridge and plug the new TC into the old one. What happens?

Is the address you are getting 169.254.x.x which is a self assigned address and means the ethernet card cannot connect to the TC?? Try using a manual setup as well as the manually assigned speed. If the TC is at default, assign 10.0.1.100 say to the ethernet and 255.255.255.0 with router and dns set to 10.0.1.1 and see if it works.

Yes. If the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) is configured as either a relay/remote base station in a WDS with your Airport Extreme Base Station (AEBS), its Ethernet port will be enabled for network (& Internet) access.

Cisco RE1000 WiFi extender ethernet port question

Good morning - I have a RE1000 WiFi range extender which is unable to reach the far end of my house, an old barn with a thick stone wall in the middle (& the ADSL line enters at the other end of the building). I have tried various extender locations on both sides of this internal stone wall without consistent success.
A simple solution - IF the ethernet port is two-way - would be to run a 100ft long exterior Cat5 ethernet cable from my existing router to the far end of the house, into the RE1000 as its feed (as opposed to the RE1000 trying to pick up the WiFi signal from the router) & then any WiFi device at that far end of the house could connect via the WiFi signal from the ethernet-powered RE-1000.
Will this work, ie. will the RE1000 accept the ethernet signal as its source and transmit it onwards via its WiFi capabilities (or is the RE1000 ethernet port's only purpose to transmit wirelessly-received signals to a wired, non-WiFi-capable device ?) ?

Battery & Dead Ethernet port question

So if my battery is showing no outward signs of getting old but my ethernet port is dead could an older battery cause this? (All other possibilites covered but a new battery... prior to a PCI card purchase... thought I would ask...)

My ethernet port won't work either, so I bought a PCI card. It has the same behavior as my ethernet port. Neither the card nor the port will connect with DHCP anymore (worked for 4 years and stopped a few days ago). If I specify an IP address it will connect manually, however it will only connect me to the router, meaning, I can access the mac on the network with another computer but cannot access the internet on the mac (other computers are connected to the same router and on the internet).
I originally thought it was the battery. Then I thought it was Ethernet port failure until the new PCI card I bought did the same thing. I’ve flashed the PRAM, replaced the battery, and reinstalled OS X. Nothing seems to fix it.

Ethernet Port Question

I just got a new MacPro and just had a stupid question.
I plugged it in and it works -- though, it's currently using en1 not en0
(note I did not have airport installed, so the fact that it's listed as airport was a tad surprizing).
My stupid question is are the ports mapped to a specific interface? eg left is en0 right is en1.
It got annoying when it switched en1 to dhcp vs eno 's imported static ip

One port is en(0) and the other is en(1), although this can change if you had an Airport card. Just switch the cable to the other port or reconfigure the current one to use your static IP address.

Question with regard to dual ethernet ports

First let me say that I am a novice at networking, so this may be a stupid question. I had my network plugged into on of the ethernet ports and was unable to access a forum I visit. I could access most every other website, but not this particular one. I switched the ethernet cable to the other port and the problem resolved itself. Why would I be able to access it from the one port and not the other?

Question about Ethernet Port

Fumbling in the dark, I knocked by 12" G4 off the table. It must have landed where the ethernet cable connects to the port. I'm now unable to access the network using ethernet. Everything else works okay -- I can use wifi, and all the applications work normally. The reason I use ethernet is because once in a while my wifi connection drops (due to a baby monitor nearby?).
Do you think this would be a simple fix, or should I bring it in to a shop? My husband is pretty handy with computers and has torn his old G3 apart several times.

Nancy: This is probably going to require replacing the logic board, to which the Ethernet port is (was) soldered. It's a difficult job, and the part will cost $200-300 used.

Built-in ethernet port not working in unibody Mac Mini

Hi,
So ever since I acquired this new mac mini I haven't been able to get it to recognize any devices connected via ethernet. I obviously checked the cables and all is good there. I tried connecting it to another mac, and while the other machine was detecting a device (the mac mini) at the other end of the cable, the mac mini kept saying that the cable is unplugged or the device off.
After several days of having the issue I decided to remove the ethernet service from the network preference pane to set it up again but to my surprise, the built-in ethernet option was not available (I only got airport, firewire, bluetooth DUN, VPN, PPPoE and 6 to 4). At this point I tried removing the networkinterfaces.plist file form the system configuration folder in the system preferences folder to no avail. I then tried to zap the PRAM, NVRAM, reset the SMU, SMC and all that kind of things to get the port recognized by the system but no luck.
When I look at the system profile I get these weird results in Ethernet Cards:

Comparing it to other macs I have It should read "ethernet" rather than that strange pci name on top and the kext name shouldn't read airport but something like AppleIntel and in location it shouldn't direct to the IO80211Family.kext package but rather to the IONetworkingFamily.kext.
So I popped in the system install DVD and fired up System profiler and at that point I didn't even get an "ethernet cards" option in the left side pane. So this is leading me to believe that the hardware is not being recognized at all, so maybe it's damaged. I did replace the HDD with a bigger one and change the RAM modules to bigger ones but I don't think I could have damaged the hardware in these processes, also I don't see how this would affect the ethernet port as it's integrated to Motherboard and didn't messed with it at all (I was very careful, to say the least!).
The last thing to do is reinstalling the system but I don't think it'll help (after seeing that the ethernet port is not even being detected by the install OS) but I need to offload all the data from my internal disk and at the moment I don't have an spare drive to do it.
So, what's the recommendation? A field trip to an Apple Store? Closest one is like 3,000 km from where I am right now, so...

I do not have any answers for you. Yes it appears to be reading what should be an ethernet card as an AirPort card. Have you played around with trying to install another version of Mac OS X other than the version that shipped with the Mac mini? Apple has long told us that we should not install a version of Mac OS X that was older than the shipping version. With the Mid 2010 Mac mini, the Restore DVD has the only version of Snow Leopard that will work with this Mac mini's specific hardware. At least until Apple releases 10.6.5. If you have installed other versions of Mac OS X, then erasing the HDD and installing the OS from the Restore DVD(s) that shipped with the mini may get you back to the point you need to be.
Unfortunately I think that you voided your Apple Warranty when you installed the different HDD. That was always a question in the past when folks wanted to open the former version of Mac minis and upgrade the RAM. But with the 2009 models folks started reporting here in the Apple Discussions that Apple was informing them that they had voided their warranty by opening their Mac mini. This new model made the RAM user upgradable, but the User Manual specifically states on page 43, 54 and 61 that there are no user serviceable parts in the Mid 2010 Mac mini except the memory.

Can I activate the ethernet ports (routing) of Time Capsule "joining" an existing non-Apple wireless network ?

I have a DSL modem that is also a WIFI router as my main WIFI network from room A. In room B, I have a TC wirelessly joining the existing WIFI network (not creating a new one). That works fine, I have one SSID, and I can wirelessly access the TC disks and backup my Mac on my TC.
Now, I would like to connect a wired device (with on WIFI) to the ethernet port of my TC. Unfortunately, the ethernet ports of the TC don't seem to be "activated" as they do not have internet on them.
More precisely, I'd like to connect a GE Cordless Skype Phone Model# 31591 (http://www.gephones.com/products/skype/dect-6-0-expandable-digital-cordless-phon e-with-skypetm.html) that connects to a router via Ethernet. I'm aware that I could simply connect it to the DLS router, but that's not what I want... Is there any way to activate the ethernet ports of the TC while in "join" mode ? Or do I really have to buy a Airport Express to create my main network and then extend it ?!?

Please start a new post for that. Tell us the make and model number of the player and whether you plan to connect using wireless or Ethernet.
so I tried to creat the main WIFI network with a first-generation Airport Express M9470LL/A (802.11b/g, no "draft N" or "n" support) and the TC wouldn't extend it either, is it too old/not supported
Unfortunately, the "extend" setup will only work with "n" devices. The older Express does not have a setting to "Allow this network to be extended", so the Time Capsule cannot pick up the signal.
I'm not sure what else to suggest other than what I already have. I'm assuming that you do not want to buy another new Airport Express.

HP Color LaserJet 3600(not 3600n) with Fast Ethernet port - can I use it?

Hello! There is a HP Color LaserJet 3600 in our company connected via USB with XP-based PC. Recently I decided that we need this printer be shared directly trough our ethernet network, so I started to learn manuals - its own manual, Jet Direct, and all that stuff. The printer's manual says that HP Color Laserjet 3600 does not have neither its own ethernet port, nor support for embedded print-server like JetDirect 620n.
But!
Visual check shows that this HP 3600 DOES have its own ethernet port and if I connect it to network or at least to a notebook - it blinks like any other ethernet port with "lights" should do.
However.
Neither front panel, nor back panel says anything about network support(like letter "n" in model name).
Configuration page print also does not know about that mysterious port.
So my questions are:
1. What is this port actually?
2. Can I use it to share printer over network? Maybe, there is a way to upload 3600n's firmware somehow?

The product you have seems to be a commercial printer. For the best chance at finding a solution I would suggest posting in the forum for HP Business Support!

Ethernet Port not working 50% of the time?

On my new GD55 P67 50% of the time I start my computer the Ethernet port does not work. I know the cable is good because I have tried several cables. It seems to have problems right after I installed SP1 for windows 7. Is their a known problem with the Ethernet port on this motherboard?

By "start my computer" do you mean start from a complete shutdown, start from S1/S3 sleep or start from hibernation?
The next time you start the computer and your Ethernet port doesn't work, open up a Command Prompt window and type "ipconfig /all" (without the quotes). Copy and paste the results displayed for the Ethernet port you are having a problem with (or just copy it all if you are not sure which section belongs to the port in question).

Trying to connect 2nd printer through Ethernet Port of AEX b/g

Hello all, Hello (maybe) Duane,
I do have a 2nd Airport Express b/g on our home network, and have a normal laser printer running as a wireless bonjour printer through that 2nd AEX, which is set up as a remote base station. I do have the Ethernet port free on that AEX, and want to connect a Brother 4040cn network ready color laser printer through the Ethernet port of this base station and use it as a bonjour printer? wirelessly... The AEX is set up as a remote base station to the main base station using WDS... I read a lot that the ethernet port only works when this station is in WDS mode - it is, but I still can't get it to work...
I talked to a guy at the Apple Store and he told me it should work, and that I somehow have to configure the Ethernet port of the AEX as a bridge so that could work.... ? It is not a supported solution (as expected...) so I tried to find that, but I am not able to work it out.
I can see the printer using the brother software, it shows me the status of the printer correctly, but I cannot get any printouts. The printing windows shows the printer, even lets me pick it as a bonjour printer, sends it off to the printer, but nothing arrives at the printer... I can use the web based printer management utility, which directly connects to the using the IP address, and can send stuff that is printed out, but i cannot get it working.
Hope that makes sense - anyone out there able to help?

If you wanted to setup a wireless network, you could look at some Wireless Ethernet USB adapters (will work just like the AirPort):

Understand that the "AirPort" is just Apple's fancy name for Standard WiFi Networking. It's not anything special. Just Apple's implementation.
So, any WiFi Ethernet Adapter is going to be compatible with Apple's Airport network.
If you want to use the standard USB to Ethernet adapters, then you could look to see if you can find a suitable driver that will either enable your adapter (the one you just purchased) to work, or perhaps find an adapter that has a 3rd-party driver and then purchase that one. The following website lists Mac OS drivers that will enable "Windows-Only" adapters to work:

The problem there, is that most USB to Ethernet (not wireless) adapters come only with Windows drivers. So, this website provides information and support to make those devices with with Mac OS X.
Otherwise, I have not found a pre-packaged USB to Wired Ethernet device that comes with Mac drivers.
But, the first website lists lots of USB to Wireless Ethernet adapters that come with Mac Drivers.

Does the ethernet port work when the using airport express in client mode?

I am considering using an airport express to extend my existing wireless network to a room where I can't get a cable to.
I will need to connect a at least 3 devices to the airport express.
The questions are:
- is an airport express the right answer to this problem?
- if so, does the ethernet port work (AE on client mode) as a passthru into the main network?
- can I plug a hub to it?

I stopped by the Apple store this weekend and one of their sales people ( not one of their genius bar people) told me NO to all questions. I tend to believe more answers from people in this forum but just realize that I have not mentioned one possibly important point:
the main AP to which I will be connecting the airport express is not an Airport Extreme/Express AP.
