TC - External HDD or not?

I just picked up my Time Capsule and backed up my Macbook on it today. I bought it under the pretense that it functions as an external hard drive, however I'm having difficulties managing it like you would any other hard drive.
- I made a new folder which I can't seem to delete now (error code 1407)
- Files like music, photos and videos aren't in their respective folders like they are on my Macbook.
- I'm not sure if it's safe to delete files off of my Macbook in fear that I can't/won't be able to access them on my TC.
I don't know if it's because I'm new to Mac's or if I'm just an idiot, but how can I make my TC do the things a normal, regular external hard drive does?
Thanks!

thedude,
I have found in my own case that I'm better off reserving the TCs' hard disk for Time Machine backups. Then attaching an external Hard disk to the TCs' USB port and using that drive for other files and folders. (In my case a WD500GB Essential)
Hope this helps.
Cheers!

  • I upgraded my imac to OS Mountain Lion and now the Seagate Goflex external HDD is not recognised

I upgraded the iMac to Mountain Lion and it does not recognize the Seagate Goflex External HDD that I was working from earlier. I do not want to buy a special program since the Goflex HDD was working on both mac and Windows without any problems before the upgrade. The Goflex HDD is still working on my Macbook pro so there is no problem in the HDD. Is there something that needs to be activated... Please help

A bit more info for those of you reading this.... the problem seemed to be in iTunes. For each connected device , if I clicked on the Photo option I could no longer select the second radio button for limiting the photos by Events, Albums, etc.  It was an all or nothing deal. But selecting all would cause the error.
So I had read the other forum posts about the "&" symbol being the cause of the problem.  I went through iPhoto and made all of the changes. It did not work. I then looked at iTunes, using the AlbumData2.xml file listed in the other forums as a reference.  I found one album with the "&". I edited that one.  Still would not work.  So then I spent 3 hours on the phone with AppleCare last week. I talked with 4 different advisors. None of them had heard about the "&" error from the forums. We tried everything in iPhoto including repair and rebuild.  Finally we created a whole new library and reimported my master photos from my original one.  Using this option would allow me to now check off that radio button in iTunes.  BUT... I now lost all of my albums and events and would need to rebuid them.  I was not happy. They agreed and we set up time to talk this week.
So today I talked with AppleCare again. They now have more info and said the problem has to do with iTunes and the new iPhoto 9.4. It does not like the "&" symbol anywhere in either iPhoto or iTunes. So they now have me going through everything in my iTunes library. Genre is OK but any other item cannot have " & ". I have several dozen to edit and will do it over the weekend and then restore my original iPhoto Library and see if I can finally get it all to sync. I will let you know how I make out, but apparently you need to eliminate " & " from every entry in iTunes and iPhoto.
Quality control is not up to par with Apple these days.

  • My External HDD is not recognized on OSX 10.7.5

    Hi There,
I have a Western Digital My Passport external HDD 1TB.
I have been using it on both Mac OS X and Windows, as that's how I formatted it originally.
Today, my Macbook running 10.7.5 is not recognising the external drive.
When I plug the drive in I can see the power light coming on, so there is power going to it.
It is also working ok on a Windows machine.
I have tried it on different USB ports on my Macbook but it is not working.
I have searched online for updates, and tried to reboot a number of times.
When I last used the HDD on my Macbook I accidentally unplugged it without ejecting it.
When I ejected it Quicktime Player was open & playing a file from the HDD.
I assume this I was has caused the issue.
Anyone got any advice on how I can fix this problem?
    Thanks in advance.

i can see it in disk utility but i am not able to mount it.

  • Toshiba PX1265E External HDD its not being recognized

    Hi All,
I have just recently had to replace my laptop with a new Windows 7 device as the old Vista one blew up.
Just tried to log on to my external *Toshiba PX1265E HDD* and to my shock its not being recognized.
Issue is that i have a lot of pictures on it of my Son when he was a baby.
Is there any drivers or software out there that can get the files etc.... from the device using Windows 7.

    Hi
This external HDD is an plug&play device this means that no drivers are required
So it looks more like HDD hardware problem :(

  • External HDD: Shows not ejected properly when the drive is still present

    Hi,
I have a Seagate 500 GB external HD, the big one with power adapter. I connect to my MBP with a USB cable. Recently, every now and then, I am seeing the message "Your external disk was not ejected properly. Always make sure you eject blah blah..." even when the disk is firmly planted onto the Mac. I can see the disk in my desktop and finder. But keep getting this message nevertheless.
Another observation is - If I have Picasa open, Picasa fails to load the pictures in the external HDD when this happens. Pictures that has been earlier added to Picasa library, that is, which should ideally show up when the HDD is connected.
    Any ideas?

Try a different USB cable. If that doesn't work, go to Seagate's web site and open a tech support request with them. If a new USB cable doesn't help, there is probably a problem with that disk drive such as outdated firmware.

  • External HDD PX1393E not visible in windows explorer

    Hi everyone,
I just bought an external HDD PX1393E for my non-Toshiba laptop. I know its old and it has still windows 2000 SP4 on it.
Now my problem is my laptop wont recognise the external HDD. The add new hardware wizard works fine, but I can't see the new drive in windows explorer.
I looked in the FAQ from the guide. There I tried to go and see in the storage options from rigt-click on my computer in the manage options. But I still can't see the drive.
Now I wanted to see if I could find some driver update or something, but man you cant find jack on this site.
    Anyone?
    TIA

    dear kody,
thanks a lot! This seems to help.
I had exactly the same problem with a WD 1TB external drive. I couldn't figure out what was wrong.
The WD people should have mentioned that in the instructions.
I'm now formatting 1 TB of space. It probably takes until tomorrow morning.

  • External HDD (Internal) Not Showing Up In Finder, But It Is Showing Up In Disk Utility

Before I start, I know that this question has technically been solved before, but not exactly in my case. Keep in mind that I'm a graphic designer, this is why I am so passionate about fixing this issue. So, here's the story. Yesterday, I sold my Mac mini (Late 2009). I had plans of buying the new MacBook Pro w/ Retina Display (15 inch), and that worked out perfectly. I bought the MacBook and sold my Mac mini. Prior to selling the Mac mini, I decided to format an old hard drive that I had, which was a 160GB hard drive. My plan was to sell the computer with the 160GB HDD, and keep my 750GB HDD. I know my fair share of computing and repair, so I replaced the hard drive myself, and reinstalled Mac OS X ML on the 160GB HDD. I installed the OS via external SATA to USB connection, and it booted up perfectly through that connection to my Mac mini. Then, when I took out the 160GB HDD, my computer booted to my priority internal drive, which was the 750 GB HDD, that I'm having problems with currently. It booted up perfectly, and all of my information was on it. So, at that point, seeing that everything was flawless, I extracted the 750GB HDD, from inside the computer and replaced it with the 160GB HDD, which I formatted, reinstalled ML on, and was planning on selling it with. The 160GB HDD booted perfectly and everything was working on the Mac mini, but then, I plugged in my 750GB HDD via USB connection, to see if my files and everything was still there, I got a message saying, "The disk you inserted is not readable by this computer" and it gave me three options underneath, which were: "Initialize...", "Ignore" and "Eject". I pressed on initialize, and tried to do everything that I possibly could, without formatting it, and all of the options like "Verify Disk" and "Repair Disk" were "grayed out", if you know what I mean. I tried plugging it into all 5 USB ports, but I got the same message. It was recognized in Disk Utility, but not in Finder. So, I sold the computer with the 160GB HDD that was working fine, but now I had another dilemma which was why my 750GB HDD, isn't showing up in Finder. I can hear the HDD spinning when I plug it in via USB. This Hard Drive has run Mac OS X Lion and Mountain Lion on it, I've never installed Windows on it. So, it was properly formatted for a Mac. Now, I went out and bought the MacBook Pro with Retina Display that I needed, and I tried doing the same thing, which was plugging it in via USB, and seeing if Finder would pick it up. Still, nothing. I ended up with the same message. Here are some reference screenshots, of what I'm getting exactly.
I've called Western Digital, and they told me to try booting up the 750GB HDD, in an older Macbook Pro, to see if it will boot, and recovery all of the files from there. The problem is, I don't know anybody with an older MBP. I called Best Buy and they said that they could take a look at it, but I would truly prefer by fixing this on my own, without having to pay them. That would be my LAST resort. I'm aware that I can't boot up the 750GB HDD in my new MBP w/ Retina because it can only carry SSD. So, I'm basically puzzled. If anybody could help me out, it'd be greatly appreciated. Like I said before, I'm a graphic designer, and I'm in desperate need of the files that were on my 750GB HDD. Thanks.

  • All files in the external HDD are not able to open

    HI guys,
I have an external hard drive for backup. All files in it can no longer be read properly.
I can still see all the folders and files as usual, but when I double click to open them, they are not readable any more, docx, jpg, pdf etc...
I tried to verify disk and repair disk, but not able to do it since the hard drive has been converted to NTFS format for some unknown reason.
It contais a lot of precious pictures and documents. Any solutions would be appreciated.

It looks like something went wrong with your HDD, it might be either physical (hardware) or logical (software) issue. The worst thing you can do in that case is try to "repair" the HDD with different utilities and eventually corrupt it even further. The best option is to find a Data Recovery company (like http://www.denverdatarecovery.net/ for instance) and send them your disk for free diagnostics so they could tell you if data is recoverable and how complex it might be.

  • External HDD does not show on desktop

My iMac (see config info) went to the local Apple authorized repair place. It took almost 4 weeks(!) for them to get the parts from Apple, but they replaced the power supply and DC to DC board.
So, I get it back and all is fine... except:
I have an external 80GB LaCie ("Porche") HDD which I use for backup.
It does not appear on the desktop.
When I connect it to another (even older) Mac, it works fine.
So I try all combinations of disconnecting, and powering down things, including unplugging the Mac for 30mins, but no luck.
    Any ideas, folks?

    More info...
I have rechecked and both iMac FireWire ports work fine with a video camera.
The external LaCie FW hard disk drive consistently does not appear on the iMac, even trying both iMac FW ports. As recently as 2006-06-19, it worked fine.
The external drive consistently shows up when connected to another Mac.
These facts taken together would seem to imply a software problem on the iMac.
I downloaded and ran the "LaCie Update Tool v1.3.3 for Mac OS X" and even it could not locate the external drive:
"LaCie Update Tool found nothing that needs updating. (Examined 0 FireWire and 0 USB drives)"
I have had the external drive turned off since 2006-06-19. Since then, I have done the following software updates:
    2006-06-29 11:36:22 -0400: Installed "QuickTime" (7.1.2)
    2006-06-29 11:38:12 -0400: Installed "Mac OS X Update (PowerPC)" (10.4.7)
    2006-06-30 19:48:06 -0400: Installed "iPod Updater 2006-06-28" ( )
    2006-06-30 19:48:24 -0400: Installed "iTunes" (6.0.5)
    2006-08-08 19:43:46 -0400: Installed "Security Update 2006-004 (PowerPC)" (1.0)
Could the update from OS 10.4.6 to 10.4.7 be relevant?

  • Time Machine External HDD is not visible.

The drive is a WD 500 GB. It is plugged in through the USB port in the back of the computer. I have tried switching the USB ports. The HDD has its on power supply and does not depend on computer for power. Drive worked fine at first but now it does not show up on the desktop. It used to show up as a time machine drive. When I open Disk Utility it sees the drive in the box on the left side. I can not select any options under the first aid tab except for the check box. Under erase, I can select Volume Format and Name. When I tired to format the disk to Mac OS Extended (Journaled), it says, "Disk Erase failed witht he error: Operation timed out." I'm not sure what else to do.

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
You may need to go disk shopping.
Have you had this disk for long? Were you using it on a Mac, or a PC? What is/was on it?
What does DU show for *Partition Map Scheme* when you click the top line (with the make and size)?
What does it show for Format when you click the second line (and any others, if there are any more)?

  • New to Mac, Help with Time Machine! Partition External HDD or not?

Hey Guys I'm a new mac user
I need help with  time machine
I wanted to know how time machine works and what all does it back up?
I have 2 hard drives one is of 1TB and one is of 320gb
In the 1TB hard drive i store all my music videos and work stuff it is windows formatted
The 320gb hard drive is mac formatted and I was thinking of making a partition on it one with 250gb for time machine and the remaining 70 gb for mac softwares and files. The ssd of my mac has a capacity of 256gb. I have read for time machine you need at least 2x the space of your ssd on your external hard drive but i don't understand if my ssd is only 256 and can store files worth 256gb why do i need double the space? Secondly if I choose to use the complete 320 gb for time machine will that be okay or even if i choose to partition it to 250gb for time machine will that be fine too? Or will I need to format my 1TB hard disk out of which currently only 300 gb is empty and partition that to 500 gb for time machine?
I'm really confused every tells me to use time machine but do I need it? And what does it exactly do?
Your input will be really appreciate thanks

The reason that you want a partition (or drive) of 2-3 times the size of your boot drive for Time Machine is so that you can keep backups further back than just the current boot drive state - for that you'd need to make a clone of the drive rather than using Time Machine (see -> http://pondini.org/TM/Clones.html).
For more information for backups in general, see -> Most commonly used backup methods.
Note that you can't use Time Machine to backup a Windows partition.
    Good luck,

  • My External HDD is not working on 2 of the 4 USB ports on my iMac. It gets power but it's not reading the HDD.

    Hi,
I have an iMac Late 2013 model. My external HD is accessible only on 2 out of the 4 USB ports at the back. When you plug the HD in all 4, it gets power, but the HD's icon will only load on the desktop if you plug it in one of the 2 ports mentioned earlier. This is my first mac and I'm thinking that I should be able to plug my external HD to any one of those ports, right?
If this isn't normal mac behavior, how do it fix it?
    Thanks!
    Clark

You may have cables that have degraded, try new cables and resetting the SMC per the instructions in Intel iMac SMC and PRAM resets

  • My External HDD is not showing files on my rMBP

    Hey guys,
My WD Passport Ultra 1TB appears on my desktop as normal, but when I open the folder, no files appear.
After checking on a PC the files do appear on it.
I have tried using Disk Utility to repair it but I get an error message saying "error: unable to unmount volume for repair"
Does anyone have any ideas how I can fix this?
    Thanks
    Darryl

How is that HDD formatted?  If you have a non-WD enclosure, install the bare WD bare drive in it and connect it to your MBP.  Any change?
    Ciao.

  • External HDD shows up on Macbook Pro but not on new iMac

I recently purchased a new 21.5" iMac and when setting it up, I utilized the Time Capsule backup from my Macbook Pro; everything seemingly went fine and my iMac was set up with all the data on the Time Capsule at the time (last update was a few months ago). Once everything was ready, I signed into the Mac App Store and downloaded the Yosemite upgrade (the iMac came with Mavericks). All the while, the Western Digital External HDD was not connected to the iMac.
Once everything was complete, the system rebooted and I was off and running with my new Mac.
The problem comes in when I tried to plug in the WD; everything lights up and it seems like the system is picking up the drive but then it just hangs there. It does not show up on the Desktop or the side panel in the Finder but it does show up in Disk Utility. When I verify the disk, it tells me that it is not mounted and when I try to mount it, it tells me that I cannot and to try to run First Aid on it. I have run a Repair disk and that made no difference.
The real head-scratcher is that the Macbook still picks it up without any issue but the new computer does not.
    Can someone please help?
    P.S.
The WD was never formatted for Mac since it worked on the Macbook right out of the box and now I have about 500+ GB worth of info on there that I would rather not lose.
    Thank you.

It's something I can look into doing although I don't have a spare drive to copy all of that to and/or am not really looking into getting another HDD.
I am mostly wondering if anyone can provide an answer, or rather a reason, as to why it will legitimately work on one Mac (without any issue) and not on the other...especially if the new system has been set up using the information from the first one.
