TC in a WDS network - Security Settings?!

Hello everyone,
I have successfully connected the TC as repeater to a Fritz!Box WDS network. However, this works only if I do not activate any wireless security. The setup is like this:
Fritz!Box
- Fritz!Box acts as base with internet connection and I have WDS activated
- In the Fritz!Box setup, the MAC address of the TC is entered
- No encryption of the repeater-connection (this exactly is the problem, but more on that later)
Time Capsule:
- The TC is set up to "Participate in a WDS network"
- The Fritz!Box is entered as base for the "WDS remote" option in the TC
- The SSID of the TC is set randomly (does not change if I enter the same SSID)
- Also in the 'Wireless' tab of the airport utility, I have entered no encription
As a start (and proof of concept), this works nicely. I can connect to the TC network and have a working internet connection. However, I would appreciate not having a wide-open wireless with my personal data in my apartment. So I tried changing the encryption of the Fritz!Box WDS connection (WPA or WPA2), changed the Wireless Security option of the TC (set both to the same, set both to be different)... No matter what I do, I end up being able to ping the TC, but not to the Fritz!Box and the internet connection is lost.
What is the standard way to set up a WDS network with a router and a TC? Is the "Wireless Security" option in the 'Wireless' Tab the one where I should enter the password of the WDS router? As you can see, I am a little confused to where I should enter the encryption, etc. Could someone please clarify?
Maybe a final hint: I read online that the encryption should be set to WEP (better than nothing I thought), but the TC does only give the security options "WPA/WPA2 Personal" or "WPA2 Personal" and not the option of WEP security. How can this be?!
I have been googling, reading and trying for quite some time now, but I do not seem to get this to work properly, so maybe one of you might have the answer? Any help is highly appreciated.
Thanks in advance, I am going nuts waiting for the TC to restart every second minute

launch airport utility and select +manual setup+ for your TC. go to the wireless tab and option-click on the +wireless security+ pop-up menu. you should now see the option for WEP.

  • Need network security settings for wireless printer set-up

I have an older airpot extreme base station. I'm trying to set-up my wireless brother printer and it says that I need the following network information:
    SSID- I know this one
    Authentication Method (open system/shared key/WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK)
    Encription Mode (None/WEP/TKIP/AES/CKIP)
    Encryption Key (WEP key/Passphrase)
From what I've found, I believe that I should be using WPA-PSK and TKIP, but what is that passphrase that I'm supposed to use or where can I find out that information?

I am also trying to set up a wireless printer set up. I have an Airport Extreme and a new Brother wireless printer. Sounds perfect, right? Well, I am so confused right now. I bought an Airport Extreme while overseas a bunch of years ago and am now using it in the States. I have no memory of any info such as what is being asked from me to set up wireless printing. I don't remember the wireless security password, authenication method, or either of the Encryption thingies. I don't know where to find this information, whether it be on my computer somewhere or online. Please advise. Plus I don't use any security settings as I live pretty far from other humans in my neighborhood. Does that matter in the big picture?
    Please help a girl out!

  • Using public wireless network, security settings?

    Hi there,
I'm a new Mac user. If I'm using my MacBook Pro on a public wireless network, do I need to change any security settings to prevent other users from accessing my documents/hard drive etc?
    Thanks in advance.
    M.

Yes turn of guest access to your computer in the accounts preference pane.
Turn off any sharing protocols you may have enabled in your sharing preference pane.
In the security preference pane click on the firewall tab and set access for specific services.
Also when using public wifi it is a good idea not to use email or connect to any online banks etc.

  • Wireless Network Security Settings

I have purchased a WRT54G router.  I had no problems getting one computer  and one laptop on the internet with the security settings turned on.  The problem is that I am trying to connect an older laptop to the system.  The older laptop does not have a ethernet connection port so I am not able to run the normal setup.   It does have  wireless adapter card.  With the card I can get on the internet when the router security settings are turned off but I want to turn my security setting on.  How do I keep my security turned on and still be able to get on the internet with the old computer?  I was told that it would be possible and that I could set up a password to where the older laptop could sign on to get on the internet.  How would I go about doing this?

First, make sure you have the latest driver for your wireless card.
Next, in the computer's wireless software, go to "Preferred Networks"  (sometimes called "Profiles" )  and enter your network's SSID, encryption method, and key.  Next make this network your default network and set it to connect automatically.  (Note: to do this, you may have to right click on your network and select "Properties" or "settings". )  Reboot computer.  It should work.

  • How to Change Security Settings on an Existing Wireless Network

I'd like to change existing network security settings to WPA2, AES or at least to from TKIP to AES.
I'm familiar with browser access to the router and with how to change the settings on the router.
My question is how to do this as painlessly as possible for the network.  Step by step would be nice
I guess first I have to change the router settings using the computer running Easy Link Advisor?
Do I then have to disconnect/reconnect that computer?
Do I have to disconnect every other computer and then connect each one again with the updated settings?
Will the change in security settings affect my print server?  If so, do I have to set it up from scratch in ELA?
For the record, I have a WRT-300N and the print server is a 54g.
Anyone who reads this may also want to look into recent news.  May not be a big deal, but a vulnerability of WPA/TKIP has been identified.
Thanks in advance to anyone who answers.

Do I really need to set security for my wireless connection. I searched for available WiFi in my area prior to installing my  network and none were available. Does that matter?
The network never did function right from the start. My desktop is a Dell Inspiron 510n and is not wireless capable? So when I tried to add my HP mni 1000 it did not let me access the Internet.
So now I have an unsecured network. Am I vulnerable to attack?
Which leads me to my real question How do I change the security settings?
Oh yeah, my home computer crashed due to a program I downloaded, so I do not have access to it. i'm a mess....

  • Mixed security settings on WDS network

I posted this under the 802.11n topic; many views but no responses. I apologize if dual posting is bad form, but I really would like to get some help with this issue.
I have a wireless network consisting of an Airport Extreme N and three Airport Expresses, one of which is N-capable. They are set up as a WDS network with the Extreme as the main, the Express N as a relay and the two other Expresses as remotes. One of the remotes is linked to the main, the other accesses the network through the Express N relay.
My question: How do I set up security so that a device which only supports WEP can access the network while other devices, including my laptop and my wife's desktop Mac Pro can use WPA2? The Extreme and the Express N use WEP Transitional, while the other two Expresses use either WPA2 or WEP.

See the reply on the AX 802.11n forum.

  • Problem with security settings on wireless network

I swapped out an old D-link router for a new D-link gigabit router and am now unable to get the security settings to stay on WPA2. I can set it okay, but the padlock doesn't show up next to the network name and when I go back to system preferences it has reverted to "none" under the security settings. Any suggestions??

    Hi Bernd,
Thanks for the quick reply! And: of course there is no Acrobat Reader As everyone around me calls it like this I just wrote w/o thinking about it. Sorry!
I passed your answer to my colleagues searching for a solution. Obviously they made the right settings but the other side using the Reader had a too old version in which commenting was not possible, yet.
Hmm, all this hustle for no reason...
Anyway: thank you very much for helping!

  • WDS Network setup Issues

I'm trying to setup a WDS Network with two APEBS's. One is in a small bedroom with the cable modem (no choice as to it's placement) and the other is in my office, with all of my printers connected. I've done hard resets on all stations. I setup the Main AEBS, WDS enabled with the Remote AEBS ID entered. Then I setup the remote base station, entering the same network name/password, enabling WDS and entering the ID for the Main station.
Upon updating the Remote station, the Main station disappears from the Airport Utility. The only way I can get it to come back is to unplug the Remote station, and turn off/on Airport capabilities.
I simply cannot have both setup and functioning at the same time. I've tried it with and without network security, double-checking every setting meticulously. I've successfully set this up before and after six hours of fighting this I'm at a total loss.
    HELP!

Put both Base Stations, and the Mac you are using to run the configuration, in the same room - preferably the room with the Base Station connected to the cable modem. Don't try to take a shortcut by not doing this. This way you eliminate any chance of wireless communications problems messing with the process. You can move the remote base station anywhere you want after you are done - its configuration settings will be retained even if you have to unplug it from power.
Do a hard reset of the Base Station that is going to be the remote, to get it back into its default configuration state.
Run the Airport Utility, and rather than trying to set everything up manually as you are doing now, let the Airport Utility guide you through the process of configuring the second base station as a remote base station that "extends" the wireless network of the main base station. Letting the Airport Utility take care of the setup shouldn't take you more than a few minutes.

  • Error setting a WDS network

I trying to set a WDS network in the Airport Utility but I always get an error message. I have an Airport Express (named A1) working and connected to the internet and I want to use another Airport Express (named A2) to extend the range of the network. The existing network is named AP.
    That's what I'm doing:
    1 - I open the Airport Utility and see A1 and A2.
    2 - I click the A2 and Continue.
3 - I set the Airport name (A2) and the password, Continue.
4 - Connect to the current network (or something like this, sorry, I'm trying to translate, I'm using the portuguese version). Continue.
5 - Extend the range of the Airport Extreme or Airport Express. Continue.
6 - The systems detects the network in AP. Continue.
7 - Type the password. Ok.
8 - The systems shows the network AP and it's Airport ID. I click it and Continue.
9 - The systems shows "Setting the main network to a new remote WDS". And I got the message: "There was an error setting this Apple wireless device to WDS. Close the Airport Utility and try again."
What's wrong? How can I make it work?
    Thanks for the help!

Hi Brunocarlos - I wanted to let you know I was finally able to get my WDS working after setting it up manually as opposed to using Airport Utility to try and set it up. Here is what I did:
    1) Perform a hard reset on both AE's by unplugging the unit, depressing the reset button (near the audio out jack), and plugging it back in while holding the reset button. After about five seconds you will see the lights flash green three times and then it is reset.
    2) Use Airport Utility to configure your main AE that is connected to the internet and make sure and click the "manual setup" button on the bottom left of the AU window.
    3) When in the setup screen for the AE, click on the "wireless" tab and make sure to select "participate in a WDS" from the drop down. You will see a WDS tab appear.
    4) Click on the WDS tab and select "main" from the drop down menu. It will then ask you to input the MAC ID of the remote base station. If you use your mouse/trackpack and mouse over the icon for your second AE base station, you will see a yellow window pop up with the MAC ID of the other base station. Copy this Mac ID into the field listed under that WDS tab.
    5) Change whatever other settings you want in the other tabs to include your wireless network name, security features, etc.
    6) Once completed click the "update" button to update the features for this "main" base Station.
    7) Once update is complete, run the same procedure for the second AE base station. Click the base Station in the AU window, click the "manual settings" tab.
    8) Go back to the "wireless" tab and selection the "participate in a wds" from the drop down. Then click on the WDS tab and select "remote" from the drop down as this second AE will be your remote base station.
    9) It will bring up a box where you will need to input the MAC ID for the "main" base Station. Again, if you mouse over the icon for the main base Station in the main AU window, you should get a box with the MAC ID.
    10) *IMPORTANT* Once you put in the MAC ID, go ahead and update the other tabs as necessary. It is VERY IMPORTANT though to make sure that all of the settings for this "remote" AE are the same as the "main" Station. Make sure that the remote unit is on the same channel. Also make sure that you select the same wireless security type and the same information for the wireless network that you used under the "main" AE. So, the name of the network should be the same, as well as security, password, etc. You can name this AE whatever you want, but just make sure that all of the other configuration features, especially the information on the wireless network and password are the same.
    11) Once you are sure everything is the same, click "update" and everything should work. Once the "remote" AE restarts, it should appear in your AU main window with a green light/dot under it signifying that it has joined the network and is now part of the WDS.
Sorry if any of this is confusing. If you have any problems, let me know and I can give you my e-mail address and I will send you some screen shots of the process. After a few tries, the most important thing I learned is that you need to make sure that ALL of the settings are the same on your "remote" station as they are on the main station. Also make sure to get those MAC ID's right or else it won't work. Good Luck!

  • Command to set modify Advanced Security Settings (Audit Settings for folders) on windows 2008

    Hello,
We have requirement to modify  Advanced Security Settings (Audit Settings for folders) on windows 2008. I am looking for a command which does this job.
I know, using group policies I can do this; in fact I had done this using group policies. However, I need to do this on number of servers which are not in domain. There are around 15 folders on which I need to enable Auditing; manual editing folder advanced
permissions is a cumbersome job. Hence, I am looking for a command line options.
I need to know how command can be utilised to enable Audit option on a folder. Please share a command which can do this; once I get the command, I will create a batch file for other necessary folders. (BTW, this is not a scripting question, I just need to
know the command hence, please do not re-direct me to scripting forum)
Manually through GUI, I am setting following.. snaps are given below
    Thanks !

You can try using Auditpol.exe: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc731451%28v=ws.10%29.aspx

  • Airport WDS Network and the 5GHz Option

Setting up any Airport base station with basic settings is simple but there always seem to be options that are not well covered in the 'manual' when setting up slightly more complex networks. I'm hoping someone can provide some clarification on our configuration or parhaps some advice.
For many years we have used a series of generations of Aiport basestations to create a WDS (wireless distributed) network. This is where one base station is the master and other base stations extend the range of the network wirelessly. This is not a set of wireless basestations creating an extended network by sitting on an ethernet backbone - that's a different configuration.
Anyway, we now have a Time Capsule, an Airport Extreme, and an Airport Express. The Time Capsule is the master and the other two base stations extend the network. By default, the basestations select the channel automatically but we have selected manual channels because we have neightbours that all seem to want to sit on channel 1. We've opted for channel 13, a less used channel.
    [Internet ADSL Modem]
    |
[Airport Extreme] ---- [Time Capsule] ---- [Airport Express]
The Extreme and the Express both operate in Bridge Mode only, that is, they simply extend the configuration of the master basestation and do not ditribute private addresses or do any NAT. I reckon this keeps it simple. Any changes made on the Time Capsule - such as Access Control changes - are pushed out to the other two stations automatically. This seems to be a significant improvement over version 5 of the airport software.
My main question relates to the 5GHz network option. I can turn on a 5GHz discrete network on the Time Capsule. It receives a unique name so it's clearly distinguished from the 2.4GHz network when connecting to it on our Macs. You would expect the other two base stations to be able to extend the 5GHz network too but their 5GHz options remain turned off by default. I can turn them on manually but I'm not sure if they should all be configured to work on the same channel or even if turning them on at all is a good idea.
Over the years, the setup of a WDS network has become easier (if only for the reason that Apple has removed some of the more confusing options and simply enables them in background). But the 5GHz network configuration is far from clear. Any advice anyone might have would be much appreciated. Thanks.

My main question relates to the 5GHz network option. I can turn on a 5GHz discrete network on the Time Capsule. It receives a unique name so it's clearly distinguished from the 2.4GHz network when connecting to it on our Macs. It appears as if your Time Capsule is a simultaneous dual band version which produces both a a 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz network.....and you have enabled the option to assign a separate name to the 5 GHz network.
If both your AirPort Extreme and AirPort Express are also simultaneous dual band versions, they can extend both the 2.4 GHz and 5 Ghz signals from the Time Capsule.......but only if the Time Capsule is configured to use the same wireless network name for both bands.
The simultaneous dual band version of the AirPort Express is easy to identify......it looks like a miniature AirPort Extreme.  Check the Model No on the bottom of the AirPort Extreme and report back with that to find out if your AirPort is simultaneous dual band.
Earlier versions of the AirPort Extreme could produce a 5 GHz or 2.4 GHz network, but not both at the same time.
Once we have clarification on your AirPort Extreme and AirPort Express, we can decide on the options that will be available to you as far as "extending" both bands.

The message that the current operating system gives me when I access the Firefox site via Internet Explorer is "Your current security settings do not allow you to download this software." How do I revise the security settings to make Windows 7 accessible to Mozilla Firefox?

hello, unfortunately when you search for this error message it appears that it might be related to malware that is active on your system and blocks file downloads.
please try to run a full scan of your system with different security tools like the [http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free free version of malwarebytes], [http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/adwcleaner/ adwcleaner], [http://www.microsoft.com/security/scanner/default.aspx microsoft safety scanner] & [http://www.kaspersky.com/security-scan kaspersky security scan].

    Hi,
you have a weaker domain security overall. "
    LM Hash Generation
The algorithm introduces several weaknesses that attackers can exploit. First, all lowercase characters are set to uppercase, reducing the number of possible characters. Second, it splits a long, strong, password into two seven-character chunks.
Both the LM and NTLM protocols operate essentially the same way; the only difference is the password hash.

    Hi mocca,
Thanks again for your reply. You are giving me things to re-think about, I thought about all these options yesterday, but now that you mention them as the solutions, I will re-think with more gusto. A few things I'm still dwelling on:
    Why is that an issue?
Because the users system settings should always override anything that comes from a disk... Same with any programm on my computer, if somwhere from a network/external drive wants to open my browser without my consent, why should it?
Agreed. It should not. However, per the paradigm of my project on disk, the user launches the browser, the browser loads the swf, but the loading of all the other content is restricted. That seems counter-intuitive - since the user has already launched the main app, they obviously trust the app to run on their box, but they now have to go through an extra 'security layer' step in order to load the accompanying content.
As per publishing to Air, I tried yesterday and Flash Builder kicked all sorts of errors. I'll try publishing to air more today...
In the mindset of the great John Peterman: "Ah, the 'client changing requirements', where the client's expectations are high, the knowledge of the "level of effort" is low, and the process is terribly frustrating."
    Thx again,
    Chipleh
