TC Initial Backup OK - Now unable to complete - error while copying

Time Capsule
I want this to work well. It's like magic, when it works. I did the initial backup successfully - ethernet cable - and I can enter Time Machine and go back to March 6. But it will not back up now with the "Time Machine Error: Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while copying files to the backup volume."
Any ideas? Happen to anyone else?

Hi Shariba - I am having the same problem. When you say you reformatted everything, do you mean the Time Capsule or something more?? This is SO frustrating, I have two laptops backing up to TC and we will both have to go through the long process of doing the first backup via ethernet AGAIN???!! grr.

I used an ethernet cable between my iMac and Time Capsule for the initial backup.  Now that initial backup is concluded, can I assume I can simply unplug the Time Capsule from my computer without any glitches and Time Capsule will then run wirelessly.  Is this assumption correct?

can I assume I can simply unplug the Time Capsule from my computer without any glitches and Time Capsule will then run wirelessly.  Is this assumption correct?
Yes, if the computer will be able to receive a strong wireless signal from the Time Capsule.
I did not disable wireless.  So I assume the backups are occurring both with the ethernet and wirelessly.
It is inot possible to have both an "active" Ethernet and "active" wireless signal simultaneously. If an Ethernet connection is established, your computer will default to the Ethernet connection. If the Ethernet cable is unplugged, the computer will revert to the wireless connection.
I also show 2 wireless networks available through Airport.  Shouldn't there only be one now?
You have a simultaneous dual band Time Capsule. That means that it will always be providing both a 2.4 GHz and a 5 GHz network.
I named my new network the same name as the old network.  This enabled all of our devices to continue with their connection without entering the new network and/or passwords; however, I am afraid this may pose problems in the future somehow.  Any input on this issue as well?
Things should be fine. Devices will connect to the best signal.....either 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz....based on their capabilties and location in relation to the Time Capsule.

  • Time machine backup unable to complete, error creating backup folder

    All,
I am stumped.   I have never had trouble with time machine performing backups before, but I am now.  I recently purchased a new G-Drive 2T external drive.  I was able to make a single complete time machine back up on it.  The incremental backups now are the problem.  On rare occaisions an incremental backup will run, but most of the time when it tries to perform an incremental backup, I get the error message
"Time Machine Error:  Unable to complete backup.  As error occurred while creating the backup folder."
My OS is 10.6.8 on a mid-2007 Intel iMac.   Any suggestions on how to track this one down?
    Thanks,
    VSparrow

    CoffeeBean,
You really should create your own thread rather than a "me too" as your situation can be very different than the OP's. What you are doing is called Thread Jacking and considered rude which I am sure is not your intent. Going forward please create your own thread.
Your issue may be with the G-Drive itself. My recommendation would be to try another EHD and re-test. If the problem disappears then you have narrowed it down to the EHD you are currently using. If the problem persists then please create your own thread and re-post.

  • "Time machine unable to complete backup, Error while copying files"

MacBook Pro, 10.5.5, 500Gb Time Capsule. Backups have stopped working, I get an error message " Time Machine Error, Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while copying files to the backup volume." Nothing I am aware of has changed with my system, updated to 10.5.5 a few days after it was out, backups just stopped working a few days ago.
The backups stop after a different amount of time/data transfer, never completes, always get the same error message. I am able to copy my entire Home folder to the Time Capsule drive (not the Time Machine sparse bundle) successfully.
Steps I've taken: Latest Time Capsule firmware. Repaired permissions. Tried to backup by ethernet and wireless. Deleted "In progress" backup file and started again. Erased entire drive and started fresh. Made a Genius Bar appt today and they gave me a brand new Time Capsule, no go.
    What can I do?
    Thank you for any help

does this happen on every backup? if so check the console log at the backup time. filter for messages involving backupd. it should give more extensive info on what the error is. sometimes TM chokes on a particular file. excluding it from TM or deleting it altogether might solve the problem.

  • I synced my iPhone 5S to the wrong backup, and now there is an error?

The error message says that the iPhone file backed up on my computer is either corrupt or is not compatible with the phone I want to back it up to.
I have now synced my iPhone 4 and my new 5S to the wrong backup, and lost about 2 years of contacts and data.
I guess I now have to extract that data from my time capsule, which my mbp tells me I last backed my phone up in June 13 (really?).
So question is, how do I find that data, and how do I restore it?
    Can anyone help please?
    Thanks

I tried that too. I tried plugging in headphones after reading a post that maybe something was stuck in the headphone jack and the phone thought headphones were plugged in.
PS when the headphones are plugged in, I can hear it ringing.

  • Unable to connect error while connecting to more than one server in a cluster

              hi,
I have a weblogic cluster of two servers. The stateless session bean is deployed
on both these servers as well as the cluster. The weblogic used is 6.0 sp2. I'm
using a custom router class which redirects the calls to bean's business methods
in a round-robin fashion to all the servers in the cluster.
When both the servers (say s1 and s2) are up and running a request comes from
a servlet deployed on admin server, the request is first sent to s1 which is fulfilled
but in the same servlet a second call is made to the bean which the custom router
class directs to s2, but here the exception comes as, unable to connect to JVM
              of the remote server s2.
Now if I shutdown s1 and retry then, the request is nicely routed to s2 and fulfilled.
And if s1 is up again and request is sent to it, this time it gives same error
              for the s1.
So on the whole the admin is able to talk only to one of the servers. why is this
              happening ?
Here all the three servers s1, s2 and admin server are on different physical machines.
              any pointers ?
              regards,
              Nikhil.

    Opps!
Sorry, I had an error in the 3rd SQL statement. Works fine

    Hi Patmol,
Have you tried to go to the previous or next timesheet and then navigate with the "previous period" or "next period" to the timesheet in question.
Also have you tried to open it using a delegation session?

    Verify the backup.
Is this TM you are using? TM to airport extreme connected hard disk are known to be fragile at best.

make sure the disk is available and online..
But if it is not working.. then you will have to wipe and start again.

  • Time Capsule Error:  Out of the box and unable to complete initial backup

I have bought a new 500gig Time Capsule a week ago and have been experiencing problems completing an initial backup. I have been following similar threads and have taken recommendations to look at the console. Below is a typical example of what I have found happens before Time Capsule/Machine crashes.
    Aug 31 11:49:55 macbook /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[5965]: Error: (-36) copying /Applications/iWeb.app/Contents/Resources/Themes/Kids Pink.webtheme/Shared/dv1679003_A.jpg to /Volumes/Backup of macbook/Backups.backupdb/macbook/2008-08-31-105555.inProgress/5F6873B6-0869-411 6-BA84-A962B534EFAF/Macintosh HD/Applications/iWeb.app/Contents/Resources/Themes/Kids Pink.webtheme/Shared
    Aug 31 11:49:55 macbook /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[5965]: Stopping backup.
I have attempted to exclude the iWeb application from backup but, after I reset the TIme Capsule, erase the previous (uncompleted) backup and commence the initial backup, the console shows that the backup encounters yet another problem with another " .lproj " file.
I have attempted to search for all files with the .lproj file extension but finder doesn't seem to be able to locate them all. It also seems a bit pointless to exclude all of these when the idea is for Time Capsule to do a full backup of the complete system.
    Need help, please!

Try using Disk Utillity to repair permission first. I appears Time Machine is choking on the file "dv1679003_A.jpg". If it's just a permissions issue that will fix it. Otherwise, drag that file to the trash (without emptying it yet) and try backing up again.

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes.) You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard."
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Note the timestamp of the last "Starting" message that corresponds to the beginning of an an abnormal backup. Now
CLEAR THE WORD "Starting" FROM THE TEXT FIELD
so that all messages are showing, and scroll back in the log to the time you noted. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ If all you see are messages that contain the word "Starting," you didn't clear the text field.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

  • Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while copying files to the...

Add me to the list of those with TIme Machine backup failures.
I am repeatedly getting the following error message:
"Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while copying files to the backup volume."
    I do have work-around.
    1. Open Time Machine Preferences... (from the Time Machine menu in the menu bar)
    2. Change Disk...
    3. Re-select the disk you are already using and select "Use for Backup"
    4. Back Up Now (from the Time Machine menu in the menu bar)
The error eventually comes back, but following the above procedure keeps it at bay for a few days.
I have only had these errors since 10.5.3.

    Mle,
Take a look at the following...
*_“Unable to Complete Backup. An Error Occurred While Copying Files to the Backup Volume.” (Console: “Error: (-43) copying”, “Copy stage failed with error:11”)_*
There are several reasons why this error message can appear. Consider each topic individually. If one does not resolve the issue, move on to the next one. The following topics have resolved this issue for others.
*If A Backup Is Interrupted* #
“If an interruption occurs, Time Machine will wait for a period of time to see if the Time Capsule becomes available again. After this time expires you will see a alert message stating "Time Machine Error. Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while copying files to the backup volume." In Time Machine preferences, the "Latest Backup:" field will state "Failed".” [http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1176]
You will need to reestablish communication with the Time Machine backup disk.
    *Anti-Virus Software* #
Have you been running anti-virus software? xClav, Norton, Sophos, Macaffe etc... According to many posters in the forums this software can play havoc with Time Machines attempt to function properly.
*Firewire Devise Interferes with Time Machine Backups* #
If you are backing up to an external hard disk by means of firewire, do you happen to have another firewire device attached as well? An iSight camera or video recorder maybe? Sometimes additional firewire devises can interfere with the signal/power to the backup drive. Unplug it and attempt a backing up again.
*Corrupt File / Incorrect Permissions* #
One poster observed: “I searched my system logs and found a file that caused my connection to the TC to fail. I erased that file (after checking what it was - a temporary file connected to my Epson scanner) and tried again to back up for the first time. This time it worked, and in under 10 hours (I had been expecting about 20-24 hours, based on the data transfer speed).”
Initially this might be resolved without deleting the offending file. Simply use Disk Utility to “Repair Disk Permissions”. Or failing that, booting from the Mac OS X Installation DVD and running “Repair Disk” on the Mac’s internal hard disk. Now try backing up
Otherwise, you may need to track down the specific file causing Time Machine to choke.
Before attempting another backup, go into Applications --> Utilities --> and launch Console.
Under “LOG FILES” on the left select "system.log".
In the search field in the upper right, type in backupd. This is the process Time Machine uses to perform backups. By searching just for this process we'll isolate only Time Machine activities.
With the Console open, attempt another backup and note the time it starts and the time it stops. Often, the activities reported will identify the very file or event that caused the attempt to choke. (You can copy and paste the events for this backup attempt from the log into a post here and we may be able to tell you exactly what is happening.)
Once you determine which file or event it is, you can decide whether to move, delete, or modify certain things and then attempt another backup. For Instance, if the logs report something like this:
    +Error: (-43) copying /Users/Home/Library/Application Support/Quicksilver/Actions.plist to+
    +/Volumes/Backup HD/Backups.backupdb/My Mac Pro//Users/Home/Library/Application+
    Support/Quicksilver
Then it’s telling you Time Machine is choking on the file labeled Actions.plist and it’s having trouble copying to the backup disk.
On your computer, Navigate to that file ( Actions.plist ) and move it to the Trash, but DON’T empty it yet. Now try backing up again. If it succeeds, you can launch Time Machine and go back 24-48 hours and restore a copy of Actions.plist and replace it. Then empty trash.
    *Partition Scheme/Formatting Issue*
This KB article explains one reason you may be seeing that error message [http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1550]. It's a partition scheme issue. Time Machine is incompatible with disks partitioned as Master Boot Record (MBR). Unfortunately, this describes nearly every hard drive you can buy because MBR is a Windows partition scheme. You will likely need to repartition the drive and start again. (Naturally, this DOES NOT apply to Apples’ Time Capsule.)
One article on Time Machine made this observation: “Virtually everybody will have to open Disk Utility and repartition the disk as APM or GUID. It doesn't really matter which one because the Time Machine disk will not be bootable anyway. APM allows a disk to boot a PowerPC, GUID allows the disk to boot an Intel processor but both are easily digestible by Time Machine on either kind of processor.” (http://www.girr.org/mac_stuff/backups.html)
Once the external hard disk is repartitioned, select it again in Time Machine preferences and use it for your backups.
Let us know if any of the suggestions above resolved your issue.
    Cheers!

  • Time Machine error fix: "Unable to complete backup"

I first started the Time Machine initial backup and noticed it was incredibly slow then retried later to find this error message to appear: "Unable to complete backup..." This may not work for all but for me and a friend this worked perfectly.
Turn TM off then open the backup hard drive and remove the folder "Backups.backupdb" then remove this from the trash can. then start TM again and start a back up.
Not only did this remove the error message but it speeded up the backup ALOT!!!
From 300 MB per hour to about 1 GB per minute (Firewire 400)
Hope this works. please leave feed back
    Jake Aston

It's a bit self-defeating to keep deleting the Time Machine backup files.
I've found that I get the problem because my read/write speed to my external drive slows down now and then. Time Machine will give up if the connection's too slow. So, a simple fix is to unmount the drive, unplug/plug the power and everything's fine when the external drive mounts again.
If I shut down my Mac regularly, I rarely get this problem. It seems using sleep all the time in lieu of a proper power-down is the culprit. (Good old fashioned restarts never hurt nobody!)
That's my non-destructive suggestion for now.

  • Time capsule won't back up - Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while creating the backup folder. Any ideas?

I have tried all the resets, the firmware is the latest version, the green light is on.
But I get this message "Unable to complete backup. An error occurred while creating the backup folder."
    Any ideas?

Do setup again.. but make sure both your wireless and your ethernet have ipv6 turned on to local link.
Done this OK, but no idea about IPv6 - something new to me and rather Appley I think?
Unplug the WAN for the moment.. Just LAN port TC to the MBPr ethernet via thunderbolt.. (thunderbird was the kids puppet series.. Thunderbirds are go!!). Done - New real people Thunderbirds movie coming out soon I believe!!!
Reset the TC again.. sorry.. !! You're welcome ... done.
Make sure the ethernet now has an IP address.. 10.0.1.2 - Yep - done that - on ethernet anyway ...
You need to open the network preferences to find out. Yep - that's good ...
****** I then reconnect the TC WAN to the router - is this right?
And then I think I start going round in circles ... boot, reboot, restart, reboot again ...
The final result is green light on TC, but error message when trying TM is "Backup disk is not available".
Then open the airport utility and you should be able to setup the TC.
Do as little setup as possible and then run the TM backup and see how it goes.
I have managed to get Thunderbird to LAN on TC to create a folder on TC and copy a file onto it.
So I guess the drive is working - it must be the software, settings or perhaps even the operator that isn't quite so clever ...
I named network RFG, named device RFGTC.  RFG network shown as IP 192.168.0.72
Wireless router is BT Homehub 3 with IP of 192.168.0.254 - is this issuing new IP addresses when rebooting TC?
I have three wireless networks here - the BT Homehub3 wireless, the TC wireless, and also a D-link power socket ethernet thingy for an ethernet connection to the telly - DHP-W310AV which is also wireless link.  All are effectively connected to the BT Homehub - is there a conflict there?
Have several times achieved in Airport Utility schematic with internet shown as green, RFGTC shown as green, light on TC green, but no TM backup run ... "backup disc not available."
And there are no tall building around here to hurl myself off ... at least you can go to Sydney Harbour bridge - not too far away ... it was my son in Sydney that persuaded me to scrap Windows and go Apple ... it's all his fault ...
