TC joined to AEBS network for g and n devices to connect separately

Our family has a Windows dektop PC which is connected by Ethernet cable to an Airport Extreme Base Station shared wirelessly by two Windows laptops (g compatible), a PowerBook (g compatible, two MacBook Pros (one g compatible and one n)and a printer connected by Ethernet cable. I purchased a TC several weeks ago and joined it to the existing network as a wireless client. At first everything worked fine. So far I'm only backing up the n compatible MacBook Pro. The first backup took a long time, which I expected, but it was successful and subsequent incremental backups went off without a hitch. Recently I've experienced periodic episodes of failed backups seemingly caused by "server error." I've also noticed that the backups are taking way longer than an hour and are 10+GB in size. I tried to replace the AEBS with the TC as base station but was unable to connect the TC to the Internet even though the setup otherwise completed normally.
In talking with an Apple store employee (not Genius Bar), I was to that, if I connect the TC to the AEBS via Ethernet cable, I can change the TC's settings to 802.11n (5Ghz) and leave the AEBS settings to accommodate the g devices. That way the newer MacBook Pro could access the network via the TC bridge while the slower devices would access the AEBS directly. I haven't tried this yet, but can any of you more technically accomplished advise whether this might work?

I don't believe it should be set to extend existing network if you are connecting the TC to your other router through ethernet. Try disabling this, but keep the Internet Connection set to Off (Bridge Mode) on your TC. I think extending it makes the TC connect to your other router through wireless? Come to think of it, this would explain your 27 Mbps transmit rates on the TC. Each "hop" in a wirelessly extended network effectively cuts the network speed in half. And half of 54 is 27.
Are you trying to set up a roaming network, where your MacBook Pro would just revert to the 2.4 GHz network if the 5 GHz is out of range, or do you want to keep separate access points? If you want to set up roaming, then you should have the same SSID and password on all routers. Just be aware that the MBP will connect to the access point with the strongest signal, so that might not always be the 5 GHz network.
I have two unique SSIDs on my network, but since they're both on the same subnet it actually acts as one network (just gives off the impression of having two). I just can't do roaming with my setup, but that's fine as the distance between my MBP and TC is usually not great enough to interfere with the connection. In this situation, any wireless client needs to connect to the specific network you wish them to join. My MBP always joins my 5 GHz network to gain full N speeds, although it can back up when accessing the 2.4 GHz network.
Try reading this pdf from Apple to learn more about which setup you want. Page 40 has more information about setting up a roaming network:
http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/DesigningAirPort_Networks10.5-Windows.pdf
Also, about your backup, try connecting your MBP to your TC via ethernet to make sure that the sparsebundle isn't corrupt or anything. That way, if it backs up, you know it's just a wireless connection issue.

    It has error number -50.

If it only happens with this project, it's probable some media files have become corrupted.
Those may be render files. Make sure background rendering is off. Select the project in the browser and from the file menu, choose Delete Project Render Files; choose All from the dialog. Without rendering, try exporting.
If that doesn't work, use an optimized version of your DSLR clips. (Right click on the clips in the browser and hit Transcode.)

I have bought a new airport express and using it with my macbook (iTunes 10.2.2). I have joined an existing wireless network for internet in my home and with that i am trying to play the music via itunes but there is audio dropouts every 60 secs or so. I am using a set of speakers from kenwood connected to the airport express. The operating system on my macbook is mac os X 10.5.8. i am sure it is not a problem of streaming music online because i have even tried playing music which are stored in my macbook.
Is there any problem with the setting in itunes or quicktime ? Kindly reply...... I am waiting for your valuable suggestion.
Thank you a lot in advance.

I am shocked to have found this same AX audio dropout problem starting TODAY, every few seconds the audio just drops for a couple seconds and then resumes:  Latest software versions of everything.  No iPad, iPhone or Touch.  Internet hardwired to D-Link DES1105 (1000baseT Switch) hardwired to new 80211N AX, AX optical to stereo, AX Wi-Fi internet to basic 1st-gen MacBook operating at 80211G, and an older 'G' AX extender at the far end of the house, away from all this.  The MacBook streaming iTunes is usually 12 feet from AX.  I've used this setup for years of trouble-free AirTunes / Airplay until today.  Today I also found 2 very reliable fixes and 1 way to force a dropout, but first, I read some posts and tried ALL following settings one-at-a-time and restored them ALL because NONE of them helped:  Turned off IPV6.  Streamed to multiple speakers 'Computer' and 'AX' (restored to just AX).  Turned off 'Ask to Join new (WiFi) Networks'.  Turned off Bluetooth (can't live without Magic Trackpad, so glad that wasn't it).  Here's my discoveries:  Lo and behold, each time I click the Airport icon in the Menu (you know it shows you've got 4 bars from AX) when the status switches to 'Looking for Networks' for a second it CAUSES the AX audio to drop out for a couple seconds (it never did that before today.)  iTunes still playing, streaming, AX laser still lit, but the 'PCM' light on stereo and the sound GOES OUT EVERY time I click the Airport icon in the menubar, just like the regular, annoying dropouts.  So, to reduce traffic I quit Safari (3 tabs, no streaming, just Gmail, Google, and Netflix browsing).  Lo and behold, the dropouts stopped altogether.  No other Web apps going (not iTunes Store, Genius, Ping, nothing), so I launched Chrome to the same 3 tabs and the dropouts HAVE NOT RETURNED.  That's right, not only did simply QUITTING SAFARI cure it, and Chrome doesn't contribute to it, but I can demonstrate it just by forcing my Airport to re-scan.  Works for me, written using Chrome.  The other reliable fix is to hardwire MacBook to the Switch.  This is obviously not ideal, but Airplay audio doesn't drop out over Ethernet.  Also, in all my tests, it made no difference whether iTunes did the streaming, or Airfoil did.

  • Best way to setup personal cloud network for iTunes and iPhoto media?

Looking for a way to free 1TB storage space on multiple Apple devices, but still have virtually anywhere access to those media files with an easy, quick and reliable interface. Mac Mini Server might be a bit steep at $1000. (for that price you can get an MBA 11" or nearly an iMac)
I purchased a WD My Cloud 2TB, but I do not think iPhoto 09 will be able to organize and access photos from not only a network drive, but one that is not Mac OS X Extended (Journaled).
    Network Devices
RCN – Cable Network and ISP – 48 MBPS Down – 6 MBPS Up
RCN Cable Modem – Arris TM722
    AirPort TimeCapsule Router A1409 (2TB and USB Port) 3 LAN-1 WAN - Gigabit – a/b/g/n
NetGear Switch GS605 - 5 port Gigabit Switch wired connection to AirPort TimeCapsule
Western Digital My Cloud – (2TB and USB Port) wired connection to AirPort TimeCapsule
Apple TV 2nd Generation – wired connection to AirPort TimeCapsule
Samsung HDTV UN40C6300SFXZA – LAN wired to NetGear switch via CAT6 shows 10/100mbps (Amber Light)
Nintendo WII – wired connection to NetGear Switch
Sony PS3 – wired connection to NetGear Switch
    iPhone 4 – iOS 5 - 32GB – Quantity 2 – WiFi Connection
    MacBook Pro 2010 6,2 – Mountain Lion 10.8.5 – 320GB HDD – WiFi connection - Sync iPhone – 2 Users
MacBook – Leopard 10.5.8 – WiFi connection – hoping to speed up after freeing space.

    Terence,
Any novice friendly, photo management software that you might recommend to achieve a centralized media, personal cloud? (ie Phase One Media Pro 1 or some other)
Maybe Add, Delete and View by many devices, but Editing and Projects on one main computer are the extent of capabilities I would need.
Anywhere, Anytime on Anything, that is what the Apple Ecosystem should be
Freeing up storage on the devices is the wall that we are hitting our heads against. We want to access our old photos while having room to take new ones. SSD drives are great - lighter, thinner, faster, but way less capacity for the price. Add to that the numerous devices that dramatically increase the ability to create content and you have a very foreseeable, major storage bottleneck that Apple has not adequately addressed. They have put considerable resources and marketing into the Apple Ecosystem, and its ease of use and integration. However, they did not create anything to put it all, other than the digital equivalent of boxes in the basement where once a decade you open it up to see what's there.
It just seems like it should not be that difficult to store a thumbnail library on the local to organize the photos by events, faces, locations. Then pull a copy of the photo from the network drive for editing, email, message, etc... then save the photo back to the network when editing is finished. However, if multiple devices can be adding, deleting and editing simultaneously, I guess that would would increase the problem exponentially. Adding, deleting and tagging would be 99% of the activity for consumer level software so it seems there should be a solution.

  • Different physical networks for public and private IPs ?

    Hi,
My ISP router, public sides and private sides of my servers are all plugged on the same switch. I was wondering if the troubles I experience with my home directories server, hanging all services very often, can come from that config. Does it make sense to usse different switches for public and private IPs ?

It's a good practice to put external and internal traffic on different switches or, at least, on different VLANs on the switch to segregate the traffic.
However, it's unlikely to cause the problems you describe unless there's something wrong with the network (e.g. it's overloaded or experiencing some kind of broadcast storm.
If you have a separate switch it's worth trying. Without knowing the make and model of your switch it's impossible to tell whether VLANs are a viable option for you.

  • Joining a work network using wireless and proxy servers

    Hi,
I have just arrived at a new work location, where we have an afterhours user network that we can connect to in our accommodation. I have had continual trouble trying to connect to the network, and have taken my MacBook to the geeks who provide the network. They can't fix the problem either (and are reluctant to as they don't like Mac's).
The problem is exactly as follows:
My airport instantly identifies the network. I need a password to connect to the network name, and this seems to work, but when I run the diagnostics it shows that the airport, airport settings and network settings are all green; but ISP, internet and server are red and failed.
Next I click on advanced, and the geeks informed me that I need to set up a Web Proxy (HTTP), Secure Web Proxy (HTTPS), FTP Proxy and SOCKS Proxy. They have all been done correctly with the same login and password (which was provided by the geeks). Now they have watched me do this and tried themselves, and they tell me it is correct and has worked previously on other peoples Mac's this exact way.
But for some reason after applying all this and even restarting the computer just incase, the ISP and onwards still fail to connect.

The good news is that the basic roaming network setup is the same with the newer 6.x version of the AirPort Utility.
Here are some step-by-step instructions using the 6.x version of the AirPort Utility.
First, there are a few key elements to successfully configuring a roaming network, and they are:
All of the base station must be interconnected by Ethernet. Note: You can use non-Apple routers in this type of network.
All base stations must have unique Base Station Names.
All base stations must use the same Radio Mode and Wireless Security Type/Password.
Each base station should be on a different Radio Channel. Using "Automatic" works well here.
All base stations, other than the "main" base station, must be reconfigured as a bridge.
Let's start with the "main" base station. This will be the one directly connected to the Internet modem:
AirPort Utility > Select the "main" base station > Edit
Base Station tab > Base Station Name > Enter a unique name here
Internet tab > Connect Using: DHCP
Wireless tab > Network Mode: Create a wireless network > Wireless Network Name > Enter the desired name. This will be used on all base stations > Wireless Security: WPA2 Personal (recommended) > Wireless Password > Enter the desired wireless password. This will be used on all base stations.
Network tab > Router Mode: DHCP and NAT
    Click on Update
For each additional base station added to the roaming network:
AirPort Utility > Select the appropriate base station > Edit
Base Station tab > Base Station Name > Enter a unique name here
Internet tab > Connect Using: DHCP
Wireless tab > Network Mode: Create a wireless network > Wireless Network Name > Enter the desired name. This will be used on all base stations > Wireless Security: WPA2 Personal (recommended) > Wireless Password > Enter the desired wireless password. This will be used on all base stations.
Network tab > Router Mode: Off (Bridge Mode)
    Click on Update

  • Can Time Capsule be used strictly as a wireless network for ATV and TiVo?

I apologize in advance for the lengthy narrative but I feel that it will only help in describing my challenge/problem.
I currently own and have been successfully using an iMac and Apple TV and syncing with my iTunes account. I want to transfer the ATV to my fiancee's house since I'm spending most of my time there. Until we move in officially I'll be keeping my Mac at home. She does not have WiFi and has an old laptop that I'm pretty sure doesn't even support a WiFi radio. We eventually plan on replacing her laptop with a new Mac Book but until that time comes all I want to do is set up a wireless network for the ATV and TiVo service that I also brought over.
So, I bought the Time Capsule with the future in mind. My question, can I set up TC to act as a wireless router for ATV and TiVo only but hardwire her laptop to keep connected to the Internet? Will I need to connect ATV to her iTunes service through her laptop? Or can I access my information using ATV if the WiFi is set up correctly?
I know that until I bring my Mac and we eventually replace her laptop, I bought a very expensive wireless router but there is a method to my madness....I think.
Any suggestions on the hookup process will be greatly appreciated.

atlas138, Welcome to the discussion area!
My question, can I set up TC to act as a wireless router for ATV and TiVo only but hardwire her laptop to keep connected to the Internet?
    Certainly.
Will I need to connect ATV to her iTunes service through her laptop? Or can I access my information using ATV if the WiFi is set up correctly?
The network would have the same abilities as any other network. I don't know how the AppleTV connects to iTunes but it wouldn't be any different than if the AppleTV were connected to something else.

  • Same management network for ESXi and UCSM?

We would like to be able to use the same management network for the UCSM management interfaces and as the management network for VMs running on our blades. For example, we'd like to have the management pool for UCSM from 1.1.1.0 and the VM ESXi management network also be on 1.1.1.0.
From what I can tell, the mangement network on UCSM is physically separate in chassis from the traffic needed to reach the blade mezzanine cards, correct? So being able to route to the UCSM management network doesn't mean we'll be able to route to the mezzanine interfaces if they use that same network.
Since our management network (1.1.1.0) is on physically different infrastructure than our data network (2.2.2.0), we're trying to have our 6120 uplink to switches with different views of the network, two for data and one for mgmt. However, the 6120 wants to allow all vlans created on all uplinks, and this isn't working.
A picture of what we're trying to do would look like this.
    Is this achievable?

From what I can tell from reading other threads, I need to be in switch mode on the 6120s for this to work. Here are the relevant posts:

  • Creating network for ibook and xbox

I am trying to create a wireless network for my ibook G3. It doesn't have an Airport card and at this time, the cost to get one is prohibitive even though I know it would be the best option. I have read a number of the archived posts and was thinking of going with the Belkin Wireless G USB Network Adapter (F5D7050) and a Linksys router. Then I thought, while I'm at this, I may as well include my xbox in the wireless network I'm creating, but don't know how to do this. Any suggestions on that or whether there are any better options (other than an original Airport card and Airport base station) for creating my wireless network? Like I said, cost is definitely an issue for me, but at the same time, I don't want to sacrifice toom much security or speed. Thanks!

So today I moved all the VMs across xenbridges 1,2,3. I have none on xenbridge 0 which has all of my management, hearbeat, and migration traffic. I still have the same issue with hosts rebooting.
One example is when creating a windows or linux VM...When the guest gets to the part where it formats its disk, the host its on reboots everytime. This is very frustrating and unfortunate. Ive done all I know to do with what Ive found in the documentation.
    Any ideas would be appreciated.

  • Swapped out AE for TC and now can't connect to Internet!

    Hello all.
I just swapped out an Airport Express base station (the square one, not the old spaceship-shaped one) for a shiny new 1-TB Time Capsule. I figured that since 500 GB external hard drive for Time Machine backups is running out of space, so why not just get a TC so I don't have to worry about (a) hard drive space or (b) plugging in external drives again.
I unplugged the AE and plugged in the TC. Everything else is the same: The TC is plugged into a Verizon DSL modem, and we have two MacBooks in our house. I configured the TC using the Airport Utility. Everything appears to be OK, except that I can't connect to the Internet any more.
I have tried some of the tricks that have worked for other people on this discussion board -- namely, unplugging the DSL modem and the TC and restarting them. They don't appear to work. When I put the old AE back, everything works like a charm.
Has anyone run into this problem before? I'd be grateful for advice and ideas. I don't want to use the TC as a secondary wireless network device, like a range extender. It's a pricey piece of equipment and it should do what it says on the box. I'm pretty sure that the fault lies somewhere between the DSL modem and the TC, but I'm not clever enough with these things to figure it out on my own.

Same problem....3 calls to tech support and almost another one yesterday UNTIL I discovered that re-setting the TC (with the paperclip tool!) worked. The Airport Network, via TC, recognizes my Network and TC pops up into the airport Utility. i kept "losing TC in the Airport Utility page....it only showed AE/Base Station...not waht I wanted.
I unplugged the Express (previous model, one that was prior to "X" capability, ie b/g) and left it unplugged.....this must be an issue) My ONE TO ONE instructors have offered to have a look at it, the AE,at my next appointment.
I, too, have a DSL modem (Qwest) that I have unplugged without success (connections) Unplugging the units seems to work for some things but not this particular problem.
    Hope this helps.

  • WebtoGo for laptop and mobile device - urgent

    Hi,
I need to develop a web to Go application for both laptop and mobile device. The code which i generate for laptop should work on mobile device too.
ie the single application should work for both mobile and laptop devices.
Now coming to lightweight framework and small footprints what technologies should i use in J2EE.
If i use struts is that going to be mess in mobile device. Some one guide me here about choosing the technologies.
    Thanks

our java app that we have just ported from PDA to laptop uses AWT components as these work on the PDA. need to go for what will work on the windows mobile device, abnd this may restrict you to older and less functional components.
NOTE platform is defined within the application on the server side (the name of the database on the client), and therefore you will need two applications in terms of oracle lite publications, so define the database name external to the code in some kind of a properties/config file

  • VPN fails for iOS and Android devices

L2TP and PPTP VPN set up on OS X Server 3.0 fails when connection is made from iOS or Android device. When connecting from a MacBook Air running Maverick it all works fine. Exact same client settings are done on iOS and OS X.
When connecting from OS X, Server VPN log shows all the details. But when trying to connect from iOS and even from my Android, there is not a single entry in the Server logs that anything even reaches the server.
I checked using TCPMon and using PPTP and was clearly showing that packages were forwarded to the server. But still nothing showed in the log.

It's a known bug and will be fixed with 10.9.1 according to the Apple support.
