TC & MacBook - endless "Preparing backup"

Hi,
Environment: Mac Mini, MacBook and Time Capsule.
Since begin april my MacBook's Time Machine only shows "Preparing Backup...".
My latest backup now is 9 april 2009, and the oldest 23 March 2008.
I already left it running for over three days...
I also did a verify using Disk Utility...
TMBuddy gives the following.
<<
Starting standard backup
Mounted network destination using URL: afp://Roger%[email protected]/Time%20Capsule
Backup destination mounted at path: /Volumes/Time Capsule
Disk image /Volumes/Time Capsule/BookSels_001b63b78713.sparsebundle mounted at: /Volumes/Backup of BookSels
Backing up to: /Volumes/Backup of BookSels/Backups.backupdb
Event store UUIDs don't match for volume: Macintosh HD
Node requires deep traversal:/ reason:kFSEDBEventFlagMustScanSubDirs|kFSEDBEventFlagReasonEventDBUntrustable|
Any ideas?
Roger
PS: my Mac Mini's backup is running without any problem.

So, I think I need to go for the Install Disc.
Any risks here in loosing my data? If yes, I'll schedule it for this weekend...
Probably not, at least not anything that isn't already damaged.
If you aren't having any other problems, and since TM's "deep traversal" never seems to finish, it may be something wrong with one file or folder, causing TM to get lost trying to examine it.
The procedure is, insert your Leopard Install disc, then hold down the "C" key while starting up. This will take a few moments. Select your language when prompted, then on the next screen select Utilities from the menubar, then +Disk Utility.+
Use that to +Repair Disk+ on your internal drive. If it repairs some things but not others, try again until it either fixes everything or keeps reporting only the same error(s). Then reboot normally.
If there are errors that DU can't fix, it's possible a more heavy-duty specialized 3rd-party app can. Many experienced folks say DIskWarrior is the best (about $100 in the U.S.), but there are others, some less expensive. I don't think there are any that are downloadable, and I have no idea what's readily available in Europe, though. In the U.S., I'd say try Google, VersionTracker.com, or MacUpdate.com.
But if DU can't fix it, it's also possible it's a failing drive .

  • Time Machine is endless preparing backup mode

My time machine backup is an endless preparing backup mode to a Time Machine. Prior errors were a failed backup. Do I need to power down the Time Machine and restart! I see the back disk icon on the desktop and the Time Machine is under the Finder Shared.

Give it as much time as you can. I've seen 2-3 hours of "preparing" before the backup starts.
Try to let it go until the end of the day if you can. If no luck, stop the process and try the next step.
Open Hard Drive > Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility
Click your Hard Drive on the left to highlight it. Choose the icon with the exact name as the Hard Drive on your desktop. If you haven't changed this, it will be named Macintosh HD.
    Click Repair Disk Permissions
This will take 15-45 minutes, maybe a little longer depending on how much data is on the disk.
When the permission repair is complete, try the Time Machine reset again to see if that will get things going.

  • T.C., Endless Preparing Backup on Battery, Works Fine on Power Adapter?

When my computer performs a backup while I'm using the battery, it just says Preparing Backup and doesn't progress. On the other hand when my computer performs a backup with the power adapter plugged into my computer, the backup works fine. I can't alway carry my charge around with me, so is there any way that I could get my Time Capsule to backup while I'm using the battery?

    Welcome to the discussions!
"so is there any way that I could get my Time Capsule to backup while I'm using the battery?"
Can you check a setting by clicking on the clock shaped Time Machine icon at the top of your screen and selecting Open Time Machine Preferences?
Make sure that there is a check mark next to "backup while on battery power".
Not sure if this is causing your issue or not, but good idea to check this if you haven't already done so.

  • Spotlight constantly indexing and Time Machine endlessly preparing backup

    Hi,
    I have a Macbook Pro 5,5 and Mac OS X 10.8.4
Lately I noticed that Spotlight was pretty much constantly indexing, so I went to "System Preferences/Spotlight/Privacy" and I dragged my HD there to prevent Spotlight from indexing it. Then rebooted my laptop and removed my HD again, which caused my Spolight to start indexing again.
After a night of indexing, everything seemed to be working fine. Nevertheless, today Spotlight is once again constantly indexing my computer, and the bar just won't go beyond "Estimating Indexing Time". What could I do to solve this issue?
Related to this, I assume, is my inability to backup through Time Machine. I feel like Time Machine is waiting for Spotlight to complete its indexing in order to start  its backup-job, is that correct?
    Thanks for your help,
    Sander

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    syslog -k Sender mdworker -o -k Sender mds | grep -v boxd | tail | open -f -a TextEdit
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. If the command produced no output, the window will be empty. Post the contents of the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window), if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.

  • Time Machine - Preparing backup - It's endless

My C2D Mac Mini is hanging on Time Machine - Preparing Backup for the second time since "Upgrading" to 10.5.2
I had to re-format my backup disk last time and start all the backups again.
Here is an extract from the console log:
    29/04/2008 23:50:13 /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[1094] Starting standard backup
    29/04/2008 23:50:13 /System/Library/CoreServices/backupd[1094] Backing up to: /Volumes/LaCie Disk/Backups.backupdb

Does anyone recognise this? I'm a Mac novice so I don't understand what it all means. I hope I don't have to reformat and start again as I was converted to Mac from PC on the advice that "A Mac Works!"
My backup drive is a 500GB Lacie Mini if that is of any relevance. Spotlight is told not to index the drive and also the Lacie drive is told not to back itself up.
Can anyone help as it's driving me nuts!

Are Lacie really that bad? I thought that the main reason they are mentioned in these forums is that Lacie are one of the only brands of external storage that apple actively promote through their own web stores so there a good chance that quite a few Mac users will buy one. Anyway I can't afford to buy another Hard Drive at the moment and the lacie works perfectly apart from Time Machine.
The problem seems to be with Mac OS the more I delve into these forums and more importantly the 10.5.2. update which is where Time Machine appears to be providing users with a lot of troubles.
The Apple support self service on the website is far from comprehensive as I guess they want you to purchase Apple Care for ongoing support after the 90 days initial period but come on apple give us a break and sort it out or provide a support email address for specific problems!

  • Initial backup disrupted, and now "Preparing backup" endlessly

I just got a Time Capsule and my initial backup was interrupted by a dead battery on my laptop.
Now, this AM, it seems to spin "Preparing backup" forever. Should I just wait?

I had a similar problem and no amount of waiting (like over 24 hours) solved the problem. I initially thought that it was just taking a long time to complete a "deep traversal" because of a database inconsistency, but that was not the case. Fortunately, the solution was remarkably simple.
    Open time machine preference pane.
    Select the "Change disk" button.
Select your time capsule or backup disk and click the "use for backup" button.
Apparently this will cause a reindexing of the database. It will again say "preparing for backup", but if you don't get an error message in the first 3 minutes or so you should be OK.
The next backup will probably still take hours, but after that you should be back to normal. For the first backup I would suggest that you turn off any automatic log off in the security preference pane, and also uncheck Put hard disk to sleep when possible in the energy saver preference pane. After the first "Deep traversal" backup you can go back to normal setting.
This worked for me, I hope it helps you.

  • What to do when time machine seems stuck on "Preparing Backup"

This issue is happenning on my macbook pro, mid 2010. My drive setup is that I have a partition which I dedicated to time machine backups. The total size of my drive is 500GB, and I partitioned about 100GB for time machine. The reason for that is I only needed a few space since I setup time machine to include only the system and the apps, and NONE of the libraries such as itunes or photos. This means that the only backup will be for the system, profiles, and the app. I have been running this for a few months andhas been doing OK until up to now.
My problem is that my time machine seems to get stuck on "Preparing Backup". The latest backup was done last Nov 8, 2011, whcih is about 11 days from now. I am also aware that the time machine drive has only about 200 mb space left, but I am not worried at all because I've always TM to delete the oldest backup to free up space. My oldest backup was still Sept 8, and I'm ok if that will be deleted.
So I'd like to find out why it still stuck on "Preparing backup" ,and I am wondering if deleting a backup can solve it. Can it? what do I do to solve this?
Also, I use my computer alot , so it is basically running for about 18 hours a day, but still time machine didn't quite work well. I have tried reparing the disk using disk utility, but that didn't help.

You may want to revisit that strategy:
A backup on the same drive isn't very secure -- when (not if) the HD fails, you risk losing everything.
In most cases, if there's a problem with OSX the best way to fix it is to just install a fresh version.  But you can't do that from that backup.
    Indeed!
Backing-up apps that way will also be useless in some cases.  3rd-party apps that came with their own installers put other files in other places (and sometimes "helper" apps as well).  Unless you know what and where they all are, and restore them, too, the restored app won't work properly, if at all.
I think you're confusing each other with terminology.  iTunes music and iPhoto pictures are NOT "Libraries", which has a specific meaning when it comes to OS X.    "Libraries", in OS X normally refers to /Libraries and ~/Libraries folders.  This is not where iTunes music and iPhoto pictures are stored. iTunes music and iPhoto pictures are stored within ~/Music and ~/Pictures, respectively.
I have tried reparing the disk using disk utility, but that didn't help.
Disk Utility changed a bit in Lion.  When you select an entire disk, it only repairs the partition map, not all the volumes.  You must repair each one separately.
Wow, good to know.  (What a stupid change to make, for backwards compatibility, if for no other reason!)
See #D1 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting to figure out why the backups are hanging.
Whew.  This editor makes it so hard to make comments inline.  The key thing when time machine seems stuck is patience.  Sometimes it needs to be left to run overnight.  Unfortunately, it doesn't log or report it's progress very well.
Opening Time Machine settings in Preferences plus a command like this left running in Terminal.app is how I monitor progress.  And even so, there is very little logging indicating progress.
    sudo tail -f /Volumes/Time Machine/Backups.backupdb/My\ Computer/2012-07-11-133352.inProgress/.Backup.363731632.496216.log
The parts in italics will need to be adjusted.  Tab completion makes this easy, e.g type
    sudo tail -f /Volumes/
and hit tab, type the first few letters of the relevant volume name, hit tab...
Also, I have a hypothesis which needs testing.
I know that Time Machine gets confused if one deletes large files from a backup - specifically, Time Machine doesn't recognize that the size of the backup has changed.
I know because this made restoring a thinned out time machine backup ("thinned out" by deleting files from within the GUI while inside the Time Machine) to a small SSD harder than it should have been.  I had to restore to a big disk and then clone that volume to the SSD - even though the SSD had enough space, Time Machine didn't think so; it didn't "understand" that it had been thinned.
My hypothesis is that Time Machine also gets confused if the Time Machine partition is resized. I shrunk a Time Machine partition (no it wasn't on my main disk!) and about that time, Time Machine stopped working.  After thinning the volume, it started working again.

  • Deep Traversal/Preparing Backup Solution

Hi! There's a fairly common bug where TM will get stuck on "Preparing Backup" because it ostensibly needs to re-index your entire computer to see what's changed, but will never back up. I have developed, through trial and error, a way to deal with this sort of problem with minimal hassle and (in my experience) no adverse effects. I want to share it with everyone.
If TM says "Preparing backup" and your hard disk's activity light is blinking/flashing/etc., LEAVE IT ALONE. It may take some time, but it's actually doing something.
If TM says "Preparing backup" but your hard disk's activity light is NOT blinking/flashing/etc. (i.e. staying on), then it will almost certainly never back up if left to its own devices. (No pun intended.) So:
    1. Go to the Time Machine menu (activate it with System Preferences) and select "Stop Backup". It will now stop the backup forever instead of prepare it, but you've given TM some warning. Note that the System Preference panel and the menu will sometimes conflict; that is, the menu will say "Stopping Backup" and the SP will say "Preparing Backup," or vice versa. Ignore that, because I've also found that System Preferences may not close properly while TM is in an endless loop.
    2. Disconnect/turn off your backup drive long enough for TM to realize that it's gone. The volume will disappear from the desktop, a "Device Removal" warning will be displayed (ignore), and the TM menu icon will change to an exclamation mark.
    3. Reconnect the drive. TM will now Prepare, but only briefly, and then proceed to back up normally.
Also, try to keep the drive attached and on whenever your computer is on, although this might be difficult for laptop users. I hope this helps someone!

I ended up doing this as well. TM worked great for the first 2 weeks and then I started getting the dreaded "preparing..." that would go on for hours. I turned TM off but that didn't help, I couldn't unmount the firewire drive because OS X thinks it's being used, so I just unplugged the drive and plugged it back in. Backups work for about a day and half after doing that.
I just found out in another thread that there's a firmware update for my WD drive that will allow it to work with Leopard. I'm hoping that's the problem, I'll see tonight.

  • Stays on PREPARING BACKUP

Im have a few days trying to backup my macbook pro but it stays at "Preparing Backup" and doesnt do anything. My macbook pro recognizes the WD MY PASSPORT but it still doesnt work. What should I do?

    Hello,
If you are using WD Smartware to create the backup then I recommend you uninstall and reinstall WD Smartware latest version.

  • Constantly preparing backup (every backup)

i had a few kernal panics... so i understood the first preparing backup after each -- and they took up to 48 hrs to finish that and then complete the back up. but after the last one -- it completed a HUGE back up (26 gb) because it seems to start from scratch every time... then a minute later backed up again - 1.1 gb... no idea why it did - but that one was normal. then i shut down for the night normally and no issues the next day at startup (no external drives, no mozy ..etc), today i told it to start backup -- and its back to preparing backup... why? i am on wireless so this constant preparing is basically hogging my bandwidth back to the server (since the backup is taking a good amount of bandwidth).. it did say last backup 4:55pm yesterday when i started.. so it KNOWs there is a good backup already...
excluded the time machine drive from anti virus (though i dont think it was scanning it in the first place), turned off hard drive sleep, and antivirus after that... there have been no significant changes on my mac -- at most it should be a 1 gb or less b/u.
(i cant find this console app mentioned in other threads to see the system log...)
    any ideas ??
i am going to upgrade to SL - but i am awaiting all my apps to be SL updated... so for now i am stuck at 10.5.8
    thanks

    thanks for your help
ok i did read that post but didn't want to install another widget...
in answer the the large backups - - now it has inexplicably reduced to 23.1 gb - which of course is still to large..
    - vmware fusion is excluded from backups (checked still is)
    - entourage hasn't been opened or changed in 2 weeks
    - don't have parallels, thunderbird, or FileVault
    - no recent OSX update
    - no recent exclusion removals
    - no major folder renames and only a few small file deleted (ie pdf's etc)
(i dont use my local drive for this stuff so there is little file change from a document perspective)
    here are the results
I think its interesting that TimeMachine NO longer tells me when its removing an older backup -- nice... i see its in the log though... i have no idea what the last error message means..
as you can see - thanks to these repeated large backups i have only a few weeks of back ups left - because it keeps deleting the older to make room -- i used to have several months worth... the drive has a massive amount of space on it (i believe we earmarked 4 tb for total of our 2 laptops.) whats worse is it requested more than it needed in the end -- and deleted a backup that - now that it's shrunk it to 23.1 gb - it didn't need to delete...

  • Time Machine Locks up at "Preparing backup..."

Using a 1 TB Time Capsule for Time Machine Backup of my MAcBook Pro (MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.5), 8GB Ram, 2.2GHz Intel Core i7, 1TB).   Occasionally, it stops backing up properly. In Time Machine Preferences, it finds the disk but seems to get hung up  "Preparing backup..."
In the past when this happened, I rebooted my cable modem and then rebooted my Time Capsule and the next backup started working fine.  That no longer seems to work.  It just keeps "Preparing backup...."
    Any suggestions?

Do a verify of the backup.. it could be stuck with inprogress file from previous failed backup.
    A5 and A10 here. http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
Load the widget.. A1 to get the logs from the TM so you actually know why it is stalling.

  • TimeMachine 'Preparing Backup' forever

It is showing 'Preparing Backup' for about two hours before I lost patience and cancelled it. And during that two hours, there's even no disk activities or CPU usage so I guess something's broken. Has anyone had the same problem?
PS: I'm running Mavericks(upgraded at day one). The last backup was several days ago and I actually did nothing(no system update or something)

Well this is awkward. Before posting this I rebooted my machine, unplugged the external drive and it is working now...(the previous several times of reboot didn't work though, weird)

  • Upgraded from 10.6 to 10.8 and time machine is stuck on 'preparing backup'

I am running a MBP, purchased in 2011. I upgraded on Sunday from 10.6 to 10.8 and everything seemed to be working fine. Thought I would do a backup but the drive has just been stuck on 'preparing backup' for ages. Does anybody have any ideas of what I can do?
    Thanks.

I was going to suggest a restart - glad that I didn't. When upgrading OS's, there's usually a lot of data to back up, but I'm surprised that it took 'ages'!

  • Time Machine Backup Stuck on Preparing Backup for 12 hours

    Hello,
I have a 2011 iMac and am running OS X 10.7.2.  Up until a few days ago, my Time Machine backups (to a USB 2.0 external hard drive) were running fine.  Now, when Time Machine tries to back up, all it does is display the progress bar with the words "Preparing backup..." below.  This message will remain indefinitely (I've let Time Machine run for as long as 12 hours and nothing changes).
I have done a fair amount of searching online regarding this problem and have tried the steps in Pondini's troubleshooting list ( http://pondini.org/TM/D1.html ):
    1.  I first tried downloading and running the Time Machine buddy widget.  I installed it but the widget was just blank.  So, I went into Console and saved one my logs instead.  My log consisted of a huge string of similar entries.  Three of these entries are shown below:
1/28/12 12:12:53.629 PM          com.apple.backupd          Error (256): fetching properties: Error Domain=NSCocoaErrorDomain Code=256 "The file “yprime.h” couldn’t be opened." 2.  I then tried performing a "full reset" of Time Machine, as explained on Pondini's page.  This didn't fix my problem.
    3.  Finally, I used Disk Utility and clicked "Repair" for my external hard drive --no problems were found.  I also selected my internal hard drive (my main drive with OS X on it) and clicked "Verify"; no problems were found.
Any ideas what might be going on?  Note that I had emptied about 70 GB of files from my trash and deleted some other movies from my hard drive soon before these problems cropped up.
    Thank you very much,
    Jason

This issue has been reported a few times, and it's clearly a bug in Time Machine, but I'm not sure what triggers it. TM creates multi-linked directories, and it seems that these links sometimes get broken.
The first thing you should do is a start a new backup set on another drive. You should do that anyway, because one backup isn't enough, even if you're not having problems with it.
Was the MATLAB application one of the items you had deleted from the source volume? If so, and if you're sure you'll never want to restore it from a backup, I suggest you delete it from the TM repository by entering TM, selecting it in a snapshot, and then choosing "Delete All Backups of..." from the action menu (gear icon.) You may have to do the same with other items that are giving the same error.
