TC Mounting hard drive and mounting /seeing attached external drive

Hi All
Recently bought a TC and I am not sure if it is not set up correctly or if it just is not meant to do what I think it should.
I can set up the TC via wireless and cable and that works fine, well sort of. Backups happen etc.
My problems are:
-when I connect an external harddrive via the USB of the TC I cant see it anywhere. Should I be able to see it somehow?
-I am unable to connect to the TC harddrive in the usual way same as when you connect a external drive or other computer etc. I can see the harddrive contents via the Time Machine app. Should I be able to see this drive easliy?
Thanks

Connect your USB drive to your TC.
Start the airport utility, click on your TC, and click manual setup.
Then, click on disks: it should appear here.
To confirm that you can see it, start finder. Your TC should appear on the left
Click on the TC, and in the right, it should show both the TC disk and your USB disk also.
Hope that helps

  • Migration Assistant Does Not See Attached External Disk

I just purchased a MacBook Air to replace an aging MacBook Pro.  Both are running the latest Mountain Lion (10.8.3).  I want to move my files from the MBP to the MBA using Migration Assistant.  I first tried doing this over wi-fi, but when I learned it would take more than 99 hours, I chose to cancel the operation.
So I connected a new Seagate HD to the MBP and configured Time Machine to back up to it.  I let Time Machine run all day, creating hourly updates after the initial backup.  I then disconnected the drive, attached it to the MBA and rebooted.  I ran Migration Assistant and chose to migrate from a Time Machine backup.  However, Migration Assistant does not see the disk.  Yet the disk is mounted on the desktop, I can read and write to it, and I can see the Time Machine backups.  Only Migration Assistant seems unable to recognize the disk.
This isn't the first time I've had problems with MA (see my posting history).  When it works, it's terrific - my new computer has all the settings and preferences as the old.  My applications are all registered and operational.  So I'm very frustrated that I can't get it to work with my new MBA.  It really does diminish the experience of getting a new computer.  That, plus I don't want to spend days and weeks moving things over manually, re-installing, etc.
C'mon, Apple.  Why is Migration Assistant so difficult?  I'd chalk it up to user error, but this many times?

So, finally after fourten hours of unattended "migration," I let it continue overnight and in the morning found that the time remaining had not moved a minute.  I canceled MA and found that not one iota of data had transferred.
As far as I'm concerned, Migration Assistant ranks lower on the Apple success list than Open Doc, Newton, Pink and Taligent.
Now I have to manually install software I want to use on the MBA, apply licenses, and all the other stuff I would expect from Windows.
    NOT happy.

  • Why do I get Error Code 35 when attempting to mount external hard drive?

When I use Finder to Go, Servers, Connect to Server I am prompted to enter password. After I do that I hit Connect again which connects to the Server (Airport Extreme) and I see the external drive highlighted but then gives me Error Code 35. I had it working earlier but something is now obviously messed up. I have rebooted, restarted, hard restarted Airport, disconnected and reconnected hard drive. Help!!!! Does anyone know what Error Code 35 means on OS 10.4.11?

Error code -35 means "No such volume; volume not found". Not terribly helpful.
You have already tried everything I would have suggested. Maybe someone else will have some suggestions?

  • Internal Hard Drive Backup + External Hard Drive Backup

Hi everyone and thanks for your attention.
My question is about Backup for two different hard disk.
I've got an internal 500 gb hard disk and a 4 tb external hard disk and my computer is a Macbook pro 15 Unibody 10.6.8.
I need daily (or better hourly) back up for the internal and the external. On the internal I've got system and applications, on the external my work project folders.
My solution at the moment are two other hard disk raid mounted as backup drives. They form together 5tb back up space. I'm using time machine, so it manage my internal 500 gb disk and my external 4tb disk together.
Today I had to recover my system from Time Machine. The app is recovering the documents, but I have a doubt. Before starting recovering I had to choose the hard drive where to recover the system. I had to decide between the internal and the external, and I've chosen the internal, because the OS was installed there.
Will Time Machine put the files, that were on the internal drive, in the internal drive and the ones that were on the external on the external?
My complete back up is 2.4 tb so my 500 gb won't surely be enough.
Moreover. I'm assuming that is so much better to divide the back up. One backup system for the internal and one for the external. It seems to me that my version of Time Machine (10.6.8) does not allow to assign different back up drive for different is use drive. Eg. an external drive to use for the internal drive and another external drive for the external drive in use.
What about next Time Machine versions?
Or maybe would be better to use Time Machine for the internal drive with an external drive as back up, and the use an another application such as Carbon Copy Cloner to back up the external drive to another different external drive.
To be more clear, the solution I'd like to have is:
Internal Drive (500 gb) > time machine > External Drive (1tb)
External Drive (4tb) > Carbon Copy Cloner > External Drive  (5tb)
    Thanks a lot!
    Nicola

The best source for those questions, Nicola, is the Pondini Tips Page, and then go to the specific sections of his website which has everything there is to know about Time Machine.

  • Tiger randomly stopped allowing my External Hard drive to mount and...

Hello, I have been using an External Hard Drive (1 terabyte Seagate, new) for a couple months if not a year by now for saving movies, and all of my iTunes on it. Its been working wonderfully. However it recently stopped being able to mount citing invalid hard drive and gives me the options of either eject, ignore, or initialize. Im not sure what to do. And also my computer has been acting funny every since the day it started. I will walk you through it step by step.
July 6th I was surfing the web and unfortunetly clicked on a link that aparently contained a trojan. Or atleast thats what my Antivirus notified me of. I had downloaded the trojan some how without a pop up or anything telling me I was downloading anything. (using safari) So i ran a virus scan and saw one virus was in my system and that it couldnt be deleted or repaired by my antivirus program, Im working on getting rid of that but at the time I had my Seagate 1 terabyte external hard drive attached via fire wire to my Macbook. It was working then.
Later that day I unplugged my hard drive and took my laptop around a little bit, nothing unusual. Then when i came back later that night I tried plugging in my hard drive and a pop up stated that the hard drive was unable to mount and I could either eject, ignore, or initilize. I tried may different routes, restarting, letting it all rest, etc. And in Disk Utility i try to verify the disc and it says its unable to and needs repairs. So I try repairing the disc and it says unable to due to an error.
Then yesterday I went to my applications and noticed none of my applications are there anymore. These applications were saved on the internal hard drive so it was very odd to me. However i can still use spotlight to find and open my apps.
My question is, What can I do to allow my external hard drive to mount? I dont figure it is the trojan on my system but could it be? If so how would I fix it? Im mostly worried about getting the data off the external hard drive then I can reformat it. Or if theres a way to just get it back to normal without reformatting Id love to hear it. As for the applications missing and the trojan on my internal hard drive I can fix that, at the very least Ill just reboot my system with my original OS Disc and just start fresh, its about time anyways.
But please. If anyone has ever had their external hard drive just stop mounting and figured out what to do I would be ever so grateful to hear how you did so. The hard drive itself isnt damaged, its not making any unusual sounds. Whenever i plug it into the computer it acts like normal (turning on and what not) until the computer tells me it cannot mount then nothing happens. Ive looked online and it seems to be a software issue.
If its any help I was downloading a torrent (.avi, no viruses) at the time. I know sometimes if one file on the hard drive becomes corrupt the whole thing becomes unusable. Regardless I would appreciate it if anyone knows a way to at the very least retreive the files on the drive, but preferably know how to just get it back to normal. If i could get it to force mount (via terminal or something) I know which file would possibly be the corrupt one or something so I could work with it.

    Bejan:
Thanks for posting back with the pics of the messages from your computer. Disk Utility reports "Underlying task reported failure" when repairing a volume is a directory error which cannot be repaired by Disk Utility. Unfortunately, Disk Warrior may not be able to replace the rebuilt directory, either. Tech Tool Pro has a better chance of repairing it, although this particular directory issue can be stubborn, and is often rooted in a hardware issue. Your surest bet is to backup/clone the information on the HDD using a utility like SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner, completely reformat and erase the HDD (directions below), then restore data from backup.
Formatting, Partitioning Erasing an External HDD
    • Connect external HDD to computer
    • Turn on external HDD
    • Start up computer and log in
    • Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility and launch DU.
    • Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
    • Select Partition tab in main panel.
    • Click on Options button
    • Select Apple Partition Map (PPC Macs) or GUID Partition Table (Intel Macs)
    • Click OK
    • Select number of partitions in pull-down menu above Volume diagram.
For more partitions than one, after you have selected the number of partitions adjust the size of the partition by selecting the top partition and typing in the size; then move down if more adjustments need to be made.
(See Dr. Smoke’s FAQ Backup and Recovery for tips on partitioning external HDD)
    • Type in name in Name field (usually Macintosh HD)
    • Select Volume Format as Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    • Click Partition button at bottom of panel.
    • Select Erase tab
    • Select the sub-volume (indented) under Manufacturer ID
    • Check to be sure your Volume Name and Volume Format are correct.
    • Click Erase button
    • Repeat above procedure to erase each partition
    • Quit Disk Utility.

Im in mexico writing a book and so i really need help on this one guys.

Hi, hjbugs, and welcome to Apple Discussions. Disconnecting the drive while your Powerbook was accessing it probably caused your problem. It may be repairable using DiskWarrior or TechTool Pro, but if you don't have access to one of those and aren't going to buy one, reformatting the drive with Disk Utility may be the only other way to make it usable again. If it contains data you need to recover first (i.e., data that isn't also stored on your internal HD or other storage media), download the free demo version of one of the data recovery utilities mentioned in this thread and use it to see what is recoverable. If the files you need are recoverable, buy the full version of one of the utilities and recover them.

  • 10.4.9 and now USB Hard Drive(s) Won't Mount

After running the combo updater on my Intel Core Duo iMac 17" my LaCie BigDisk won't mount nor will my 60GB USB hard drive that I use to backup my MacBook (though this drive DOES mount on the MacBook without any problems). All other USB devices (and my 160GB Western Digital USB Hard Drive and 300GB Seagate FireWire hard drive mount and work fine on the iMac). My LaCie BigDisk wouldn't mount on my MacBook at first, but eventually mounted ONCE on the MacBook. • External Hard drive and dmg files not mounting

External Hard drive and dmg files suddenly not mounting. Im running Mavericks on 27" iMac. Anyone have a fix or has anyone else suddenly had this problem? There was a Mavericks update a few weeks ago, but things were fine until today. This is weird. Ive checked in disk utility and can see one of my two external HD's, the one that I back up. But not even this will mount. Ive tried repairing HD thinking it was damaged but now see that all my ext hd's suddenly dont mount. Ive tried several mac restarts.

Solved the problem. My external HD is a WD (My Book Studio). I needed to install updated driver manager and this fixed it:

  • Hard Drive and Disk Image not mounting

    Hey everyone,
I'm running a G5 Dual 2Ghz. with OSX 10.5.8 I'm having problems with a back up hard drive. It is an external Western Digital My Book 1.5TB SATA drive. After using it for a few months, it suddenly did not mount anymore.
*1) It also would not appear in Disk Utility.*
    a) Disk Warrior couldn't find the drive (I think because it's formatted with FAT32)
*2) I then took the drive out of the enclosure and put it in the spare bay in the G5.*
    a) It didn't mount
    b) It did show up in Disk Utility
    c) In Disk Utility it wouldn't give me the option to Repair Disk Permissions or Repair Disk
    d) In Disk Utility is says under Partition Scheme: Unformatted
    e) In Disk Utility I don't have the option to mount/eject only gives me the "info" option
    f) Tech Tool did find the drive and it passed all tests
    g) Disk Warrior still did not find the drive
    h) TestDisk finds the drive, but does not find any partitions
*3) I then created a disk image of the drive in Disk Utility onto an external hard drive. The image comes back at 320GB, which seems to be about right I think.*
    a) The disk image would not mount with Disk Image Mounter. It would say there is an Unrecognized File System
    b) In Disk Utility - I don't have the option to Repair Disk Permissions
    c) In Disk Utility - When trying to Repair Disk - I get the error: Repairing Disk failed with error Unrecognized FileSystem
    d) In Disk Utility - If I click Open - The Log file says:
    +Attach Image+
    Initializing...
    Verifying...
    Finishing...
    +Image of "disk0.dmg" attached successfully+
    +Mount of "disk0.dmg" succeeded+
-But it is no where to be found
    e) Disk Warrior can not find the Disk Image
    f) I took the new external drive with the Disk Image to 3 other mac computers but the image would not mount
*4. Other things I've tried when opening the Disk Image for the new external drive.*
    a) in Terminal - hdiutil attach -nomount "volumes/untitled/disk0.dmg"
    b) in Terminal - sudo hdiutil attach -nomount "volumes/untitled/disk0.dmg"
    c) Deleting files System/Library/Extensions.kextcache
    System/Library/Caches/com.apple.kernalcaches
    ALL UNSUCCESSFUL
I'm running very low on ideas. I know I could just erase the drive and reformat it, but the files on it are very important and must be recovered.
Any help or suggestions would be very helpful. I will not have time until after the weekend to try more things. Thanks in advance if you do not hear back from me until after this weekend.

Yes, it will. But if DU says the disk is unformatted then it is also not accessible. If you have files you don't wish to lose then you will need to try recovery software:
    Basics of File Recovery
    General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten by using recovery software such as Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro. Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.

I've tried installing Macfuse and NTFS-3G and FinkCommander. I've tried running terminal commands offered on various sites.
    I don't have Bootcamp.
I believe this hard drive was connected to my pc (win xp) when it may have crashed on me. I think its a recovery issue because I run a 4 bay usb hd box that probably wasnt plugged in when this happened, and those hard drives can be seen my this mac. The crashed computer's hard drive and this external hard drive are the only ones not being read. Can somebody help me? Thanks.
PS- I ran a demo of Boomerang and showed all my files on this external hard drive. It was all under the Regular tab, not the Lost tab.
I have techtool pro as well. I just got it yesterday, and I'm not sure if it's supposed to fix this stuff.
Do I need one of the recovery programs out there like Diskwarrior, DataRescue, Boomerang, etc etc?

Is it possible that your hard drive is full enough that there was not enough space on it to complete the reinstall of OS X 10.4?
You may have partial installs of the OS on the hard drive which have totally filled the drive. This is not a certainty, just a possibility, but it could explain why there is no error report on the drive.
Do you have access to another Mac with FireWire? If so, you can try to use FireWire Target Disk Mode with your iBook as the Target Disk to see if you can retrieve your data to the other Mac's hard drive.

  • External hard drive and SD card won't auto mount

I am using MBP with retina on Yosemite. MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Late 2013).
On Maverick, all my external drives used to auto mount. The same was true just after Yosemite was installed. Lately, only my Time Machine hard drive auto mounts and others don't, e.g. my backup drive that I use with Super Duper! and my camera SD card. I have to go to disk utility and mount them manually. I did not see any option for auto mount in disk utility.
Could you please guide me on how to get auto mount back?
    Thanks in advance

I have been dealing with this same issue for the past several months. Running a Macbook Pro (Mid 2010) with OS X Yosemite 10.10.1. This problem occurs when I plug in Firewire, USB, or SD card. The external hardware appear to be working fine, it has to be either a setting, or a quirk that needs corrected with Yosemite. I have run all OS systems since Snow Leopard. Never had this problem. Anyone have any ideas?

  • Can't mount external Hard drive and Can't change the ownership and permiss.

Hello everyone, got a problem and maybe someone here will know. Apple care can't help because this is due to an external piece. I have a hard drive external. I partitioned it into two hard drives. Long ago, I opened the information window for one of my partitioned drives. And changed the ownership and permission to "no access". I do this all the time to keep my files from being read if its not the administrator (me). Just recently I plugged in my hard drive (firewire and USB). Only one drive mounts on the desk top. I cannot see my other partitioned hard drive and I can' access it to change the ownership and permission with "apple key and I".. I can see a trace of the two partitioned hard drives when I use disc utility. But again it won't let me change the ownership so I can mount this again. How do I access my harddrive without refomatting? I have tried to mount this with both of my apple laptops..no luck yet. Please help, anyone.

Hi, Donnie. Welcome to the Discussions.
What part of "No Access" was unclear?
"No Access" means no access for anyone.
    To fix this:
    1. Launch Terminal, which resides in the Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities folder.
    2. At the Terminal prompt, type the following command:
    sudo chmod a+rwx "/Volumes/partition_name"
where: partition_name is the name of the affected partition.
    3. Press Return.
    4. Type your Admin password when prompted, then press Return.
    5. At the Terminal prompt, type exit and press Return.
    6. Quit (Command-Q) Terminal.
    7. Relaunch Finder: Press and hold the Option key, click and hold mouse button 1 on the Finder icon in the Dock, select "Relaunch" from the Finder icon's contextual menu.
You should then see the volume, or be able to use Disk Utility to Unmount it, then Mount it and see it.
Reset the permissions for Group and Other on the partition as desired. Do not change the permissions for Owner.
If you want a volume / partition unmounted at startup, see:

  • Seeing external hard drive for mac 1 mounted proprly on shared mac 2 deskto

    Hi
I have an imac with an external hard drive connected, which is on the desk top and can be accessed by imovie etc. On my MacBook I can see and use the external drive under the shared section and works fine, however I'd like it to appear on my desk top as an external hard drive so I can use it normally in imovie. When its time machine kicks in (sectioned off the drive for the 2 macs and storage), the hard drive section mounts itself then disappears as it should, so sort of thinking there must be a way.
    Than you in advance

what do you mean? do you mean you don't see it when you click on the imac in the sidebar? then it's not properly shared.
