TC name must be short, or Time Machine/disc access will not work

I painfully learned, after a few hours on my own, followed by 50 minutes on hold waiting for a great customer support guy, the following:
When you install your TC, it will take the name of the computer from which it is being configured. "John Doe's Time Capsule." If you have a long computer name, or otherwise end up with greater than 23 (I think he said 23, maybe 26) characters, TC will not work correctly. I hope this saves someone some grief.

Open up your console application and peruse the error logs (i.e. type console in spotlight). If you see stuff like this, you should probably change your TC's name:

  • I updated my software for the Time Machine and it will not work properly now.

I updated my Time Machine's Software and now it flashes amber all of the time and will not let me "into" it. I used to have a wireless network through it and now it does not work. I have hard reset it several times and it is flashing amber again.

I have done this on several occassions. This works for 1 time then it stops. It "connects" allows me to set it up and then flashes amber. It did backup 1 time today, but now it says it is delayed and there is no back up. It worked fine until I updated the software and tried to extend my network. After this, it will NOT work at all, for any length of time. i just reset it, and was able to set it up, but it gave me an error message, is flashing amber and is not being recognized. Very frustrating.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

I just fix my macbook air because it was kernel panic. They changed the hard drive. I could not back up with Time Machine, because it did not work and I had over Adobe creative suite 5 design premium student. But I finished my studies last year and I'd like to know how to get the serial number for me to reinstall Adobe creative suite 5 design premium when I am no longer study because I would still like the used? It is not fair if I do anymore because I really need.

You can download Creative Suite 5 here:

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You have got the "Backups.backupdb" folder in the root level of your hard drive. This is the folder used by Time Machine to save backups to, and the OS X Mavericks installer thought that your hard drive is being used to store Time Machine backups
To fix this, open a Finder window, select the Go menu (on the menu bar) > Go to Folder, and type:
Then, delete "Backups.backupdb" and empty the Trash. Finally, open the Mavericks installer from the Applications folder and follow the steps

    sonjadg,
you can purchase a replacement pair of grey installation DVDs for your MacBook Pro from either Apple or iFixit. If Startup Manager is only showing an OS X Installer volume, then it sounds like the Mavericks installer had a problem midway through its installation process. To fix this, you’re going to need to erase your internal disk and reïnstall your original version of OS X from the grey Mac OS X Install DVD, use Software Update  to get it back to 10.6.8 (presuming that your MacBook Pro originally came with Snow Leopard), and then restore from Time Machine.

Seems that you have to update Logic to the latest version (9.0.15) to get it to work in Lion.

  • A week or so ago I upgraded some apple software and now Safari drops my news bookmarks folder. I can restore it from Time Machine but it will not stay in place. Suggestions?

My iMac, running 10.10.3 seems to have an interesting issue.  Since the last round of apple updates[ including photos 1.0]safari has been dropping my "News" bookmarks folder.  It disappears on restart or when trying to add a bookmark to any folder. I am able to restore it with time machine and it will stay in place until all of a sudden .I notice it is once again gone.  Restore and its back.  Quite a pain in the butt.  Any suggestions on a more permanent fix would be appreciated.

Thanks, wife has iPad on holiday so I could not check it. iCloud occurred to me but I am fairly new to it as prior to iPad we had no need of it.  Thanks again Linc,   I've tried it a couple of times this afternoon and it seems to be sticking around.  Hugh

  • Migrating content from an encrypted Time Machine external disk (will not easily work)

I recently purchased an SSHD to upgrade my Mac. I preferred not to completely restore from Time Machine, but rather to install a new copy of Mavericks on the new disk and then migrate my TM content afterwards. At the end of installation, Mavericks proposed the option to migrate data from a TM backup, which I chose.
It turns out that the Migration Assistant did not recognize any disk, perhaps because it was encrypted, nor displayed any way to select the volume and unlock it by entering its password. Despite what Pondini says the Time Machine backups disk was not seen by the Mac: as workaround I had to create a fictitious user, log in, unlock the disk (that was immediately recognized by the system) and then run the Migration Assistant from there (by the way, after 4 hours I finally logged into my migrated account and found out that apps were not imported at all!)
I find all this quite not…applish! I could have preferred to unencrypt the TM disk rather than
Is there anyone facing this same experience? Hope that this, if it's a bug, will be fixed, otherwise I'll have to make a TM backup on a secondary disk (which I don't own so big).

Well a google search would appear that disk utility will show you the disk regardless if it's mounted or unmounted. you're best bet would be to unmount the disk in finder, shut down the computer completely, unplug it from a power source, and then unplug the firewire...
I think this is your safest bet but then again, I'm not that worried about ejecting my disks.
you get no error messages when you right click and eject the disk in in disk utilty? you said you have a my disk, do you mean My Book by western digital? I know that they load software onto the machine for encryption purposes. have you tried ejecting the disk from there? I uninstalled said software so I can't tell you if there is an option for that or not.

  • OS X Restore with Time Machine via LAN does not work

    Hi all,
i did a full backup of my mac mini with mountain lion on a time capsule via LAN. Tried to do a full restore on a new hard disk and connect to the time capsule after i booted into a restore environment. I was able to choose the time capsule as the restore source and connected using my dedicated backup user, which was also used to create the backup before. But after i cannot chose my just created backup!
Using a local USB disk with time machine everythings workes fine. But the main reason why i chosed time capsule is, that i can make my backups of all the used mac books and minis  via LAN / WLAN...
So, is there anybody else experiancing this Problem?
    Regards,
    David

    Hi,
tested OS X Restore with Time Machine via QNAP NAS Box - working without any problem. So with the Time Capsule it might be firmware problem?!

  • Time Machine on Mavericks will not restart on network drive.

    Hello,
I upgraded my Macbook Air and Mac Pro computers to Mavericks.  I was backing up my Macbook Air using Time Machine onto a drive on the Mac Pro through a network connection.  After I upgraded to Mavericks, I could not write to the existing Time Machine backup.
So I deleted the .sparsebundle file and started a fresh Time Machine backup and it was working fine.  Then I had to disconnect the Macbook Air, and the next day tried to resume the backup.  But now it won't work, I receive the message "The backup on Mac Pro is already in use."
Can someone help me please?  I don't want to have to delete the backup (50% done) and start all over again.
    Thanks.

Encountering a similar message.  My MacBook Pro on Mavericks crashed (kernel panic) sometime overnight, apparently during a backup, and now I get 'Backup Failed: The backup on "storage: is already in use." ['storage' is the backup file server.]  The details link from notification center adds, 'The backup disk image “/Volumes/TimeMachine/stefanie.sparsebundle” is already in use.'
Trying to mount the .sparsebundle from Finder earns:
    stefanie.sparsebundle: Resource temporarily unavailable".
I get a similar message using 'hdiutil attach' from the command line; I am able to mount other backups from the same file server.
From the command line, I tried:
    stefanie:/Volumes/TimeMachine$ hdiutil verify -verbose stefanie.sparsebundle
    hdiutil: verify: processing "stefanie.sparsebundle"

  • Time Machine backup over wifi not working after upgrade to 10.6.3

I have a firewire external hard disk connected to directly into my imac which I use for back-up. The imac is wired into an ethernet LAN. I also backup my MacBook Pro to the same hard disk. The MacBook is connected to the backup disk via a wifi link to a router. All has been working well until I upgraded Snow Leopard to 10.6.3 and now the back-up is not working for the MacBook. The same thing happened after the last point release upgrade but at the time I thought it must have been user error. Last time I had to trash the backups and start from scratch. Can anyone shed any light?

Try reselecting the drive (from the laptop) via TM Preferences > Select Disk (first select the "none" drive, then the correct one).
If that doesn't help, try a "full reset" of TM on the laptop, per #A4 in the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum.

  • Time Machine directory locked - backups not working

My Time Machine directory is locked - that is, when looked at in info, the directory icon shows a silver padlock at the bottom left-hand corner. Also, in Finder, it has a lock too. If I try to get into the volume, even as owner and/or admin, I have the message 'The folder "Time Machine" could not be opened because you do not have sufficient access privileges'.
I've researched this and it seems to be because there are access control lists applied to the volume. Running the command xattr -l Time\ Machine in a Terminal shell shows that the comp.apple.metadata"kMDItemFinderComment is set to say 'bplist00_ Backup disc for {machine name}'.
Now, I recently changed the machine name. This might be the root of my problem. But I can't see how to fix this, because when I try to remove the attribute with attr -d it says 'no such xattr'.
What is going on here? I've tried, to unlock the drive, using 'chmod -R 777 {volume}', but this doesn't work as the command fails on a number of entries.
    Any suggestions gratefully received!

That's not how you access Time Machine backups.
TM uses special "deny everybody everything" permissions to keep us mere mortals from changing, moving, or deleting it's backups, thus corrupting them.
Use the "Star Wars" interface, via the +Enter Time Machine+ option from the TM icon in your menubar, or the TM icon in your Dock.
Changing the machine name might mean you need the (badly named) +Browse Other Time Machine Disks+ option instead. It's available by holding down the Option key while selecting the TM icon in your Menubar, or by control-clicking (right-clicking) the TM icon in your Dock.
You'll see a selection screen showing all the disks/partitions that have TM backups on them. Select the one you want, and you'll be taken to the normal TM "Star Wars" interface, where you should see all the backups on that disk/partition.
