TC not backing external hard drive connected to Powerbook G4

I have a Powerbook G4 which I use as a media server for our notebooks and Apple TV. I have a 500GB usb hard drive attached to the Powerbook for my iTunes library. I just got a Time Capsule and quickly setup backups with Time Machine because I have over 100GB of movies that I can't afford to lose. When the first backup was done I realized that the external hard drive was not backed up based on the amount of space left over on the TC. I then went to the TM preferences and realized that the external drive was on the "do not backup" list. So I highlighted it and clicked the "-" button to remove it from that list. The "total included" amount now reflected the internal and external drive combined data amount.
The problem now is that after several backups the TC has not backed up the external hard drive. How do I get it to start backing up this drive?
Thanks.

I have found the solution to this problem. After searching the internet for days I finally found what was preventing my external drive from being backed. It has to be formated in "Mac OS Extended journaled" format. So I had to move my library off the drive unto another one, reformat the drive then put everything back. As soon as I configured time capsule it started backing up the external drive without a problem. I hope this helps anyone who runs into this problem.

  • MacBook not showing external hard drive connected to Air Port Extreme

I have a MacBook 5.2 running Mac OS X Version 10.5.7. I am running a wireless network Air Port Extreme router Version 7.4.2. I have connected a 1 TB Western Digital 10EAVS External hard drive and a printer to the Air Port Extreme router via a USB 2 hub. My MacBook sees and I am able to utilize the printer, but the Western Digital 1 TB External drive does not show up. I can see the 1 TB External drive via the Air Port Application setup, but it is not showing up on my desktop or in Utilities/Disk Utilities. I have connected the External drive directly to the USB port on my MacBook, and the drive showed up on my desktop instantly. I partitioned the External drive into two partitions and ran Time Machine which successfully backed up my MacBook. I then disconnected the External hard drive from my MacBook and reconnected it to another USB port in the hub connected to the Air Port Extreme. Once again, my MacBook does not see the External hard drive. I can see the External hard drive via the Air Port Extreme application right down to the two individual partitions. I even removed the USB hub and plugged the External hard drive directly into the Air Port Extreme router, but my MacBook still did not see the hard drive. I've restored version 7.4 and 7.4.1 on the Air Port Extreme, but it did not help. Does anyone have any insight what settings might need to be changed on my MacBook to allow it to connect to the External hard drive while it is plugged into the Air Port Extreme wireless router?

Do you have an older "dome" style AEBS or the rectangular model? The former will not work with TM. Early versions of the former may not work until you enable them to see a TM drive by doing the following:
Open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder. At the prompt paste the following command and press RETURN:
    defaults write com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1
The drive should now be accessible via TM.

  • Problem with External Hard drive connection with PowerBook

I recently bought a Seagate FreeAgent/Go 500gig portable drive (2009) that only has a USB hookup. It does not register or operate on my PowerBook (G4 2005) but works fine on my wife's MacBook (2008). It appears from other discussion boards that it may be the case that not enough power is going through the USB port to the external hard drive. If this is correct is there a recommended solution so I can use the Seagate on both computers? Is there a way to get more power through the USB port?
I'd hate to have to go out and buy another external hard drive with an external power source because it would defeat the purpose of being portable if I have to have separate outlets for both the powerbook and the external hard drive (not to mention more cords). Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Are you sure an additional USB to power or "Y" cable didn't come in the box, ****123? Most USB powered drives seem to come either with a "Y" cable, or an additional USB to power cable, these days.
In fact the "Seagate Freeagent "Go" Quick Start guide (see http://www.seagate.com/staticfiles/support/freeagent/fago_mac_qsgr3.pdf ) actually shows one as necessary for using over USB (though this is the model with FW as well).
Seagate's own troubleshooting document concerning this issue can be found at http://seagate.custkb.com/seagate/crm/selfservice/search.jsp?DocId=213059&NewLan g=en

  • HT201250 Time machine back up using a external hard drive connected to the Airport extreme

How can I setup a time machine back up using a external hard drive connected to the Airport extreme? Even better for time managment purposes I want to use the Eithernet Thunderbolt connection for the first back up and then through the wifi there after for daily routine Time Machine back ups.

You can attach a hard drive, but Time Machine backups to a drive at the USB port at the AirPort Extreme are not supported by Apple, so it's not possible to say what your actual results might be.
If you decide to try this, it would be wise to have a secondary backup plan in place as well.

  • Time Capsule - Backing up external hard drive connected to MacBoookPro

I've just bought a time capsule, but have not yet opened it, because I wanted to make sure what I want to do is possible (so I don't have to exchange it). So here's what I want to do:
In the past I have tried to connect an external hard drive to my airport extreme, and then download videos, pictures, music directly to the hard drive. The problem was that the wireless ability of the airport extreme and MacBookPro just wasn't up to it - took forever to work on videos, download pictures, music jumps fairly regularly etc. So I've kept everything on my MacBookPro which has now filled the hard disk completely. My plan is therefore to have all the video/music/pictures on an external hard drive connected directly (with FireWire) to my MacBookPro and then have the time capsule back up the MacBookPro as well as the hard disk connected to it on a regular basis. Will my Time Capsule be able to back up both the MacBookPro and its connected hard drive without having to rebuild my entire MacBookPro?

Unfortunately, Time Machine will not back up a non-HFS+ formatted drive. If it's important to have TM back them up, you need to format it to HFS+. You will then need to pick up a third party app such as MacDrive for the PCs to read the HFS+ drive. If this is the route you want to go, you will have to move the data off, re-partition to GUID and format the partitions to HFS+. Or go with a different backup program to back up these partitions.

  • External hard drive connected to Airport Extreme not working on PC

I have a Macbook Pro running 10.9.1 and my work laptop, which runs Windows 7. I have a WD 2TB external hard drive connected to my Airport Extreme, with 1TB formatted for Mac and the other 1TB formatted in FAT format. My Macbook can connect to the drive and read/write perfectly fine, but I'm not even seeing the drive on my PC anywhere. I'm wanting to use the Mac formatted partition to backup photos and personal documents and the FAT partition to backup my work.
Is there a setup thing I need to do on either the Airport Extreme or on my PC to connect to have the drive visible? Both drives are setup to allow file sharing and my Airport Extreme is running version 7.6.4.
    Thanks!

  • How can I restore files from a time machine back-up of my iMac to an EXTERNAL hard drive connected to MacBook Pro. Using Migrat

I would like to restore files from a time machine back-up of my iMac to an EXTERNAL hard drive connected to MacBook Pro. When I tried using Migration Assistant it only gives me my internal hard drive as an option to restore to. The internal hard drive on my macbook isnt large enough to store the files.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
OS X can only restore data to the drive where Time Machine backed up files from.
If you want to restore files from the Time Machine backup onto an external drive, your only option is to access to the Time Machine drive manually (open a Finder window and choose your Time Machine drive in the Finder sidebar), navigate through its folders and copy the files you want to the external drive

What are you using to search? You should be able to search any drive in from the Finder. If you're having trouble, try "EasyFind" from the App Store (free). You can search any volumes with it.

  • Time Capsule can't backup external hard drives connected to it. Got that.

Hello Apple Support Communities! This is my first post. Hope this finds you all well My first year as an Apple user. I bought a 2-Tb TC and am running my first backup to my MacBook as I write this.
Problem statement: TC can't backup external hard drives connected directly to it, but the ones connected to the Macs that are connected wirelessly to it. Duly noted. However, the Spotlight will reindex the hard drives connected to the Mac and that will take hours; the whole backup will take days. Thus, excluding the hard drives at "System Preferences > Spotlight > Privacy tab" will probably help reduce the time of backup, or just ejecting them will do too. That itself has not proven effective coz it's still taking forever (50Gb in 2 days, still going).
    Questions:
    1) Do I wait until my first backup to my MacBook's internal hard drive is done before I connect my hard drives to my MacBook and attempt another backup? If yes, how do I go about the excessive time Spotlight reindexing takes if I intend to backup my hard drives connected to my MacBook?
    2) Is there any other way of speeding up the first-time backup?
*Note: All versions of OS and firmwares are up-to-date. TC is connected to an external wireless router. TC is intended to be used as backup device and / or file server only.
P/S: Apologee if this has already been discussed before, thus, a link to previous discussion thread would highly be appreciated)

How do I backup the externel hard drives connected to my MB. I was under the impression that that has already been done, because I've read it somewhere in a discussion that said it's done automatically unless I exclude it from a backup, which I didn't. So it's supposed to backup the external hard drivestoo because I had them connected to my MB the entire time during the backups.
By default an external drive is excluded.. the list is odd.. if I plug a drive into the mac.. it immediately is listed as excluded.
This is not the list of included.. this is the list of excluded.. remove it from the excluded list to include it.
It is kind of reverse polish notation in backups.
If I want to enter the Time Machine, should I enter it with the TM turned on or off?
Not sure what the question means. If you use the star wars display and want to recover files then use TM off.. but read up pondini.. how to do restore etc.
    http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
15A in particular on the how to use TM.
When do I uplug the ethernet and use the wireless connection instead?
Once you have finished the main backup you can go back to wireless. The incremental backups are mostly very small.

  • Time Capsule also backup an external hard drive connected to Mac?

My internal hard drive on my iMac Intel 2.4 20" is filling up so I'm looking at getting an external Firewire 800 hard drive to connect directly to the iMac. Can my Time Capsule back up my internal hard drive as well as an external hard drive connected directly to the iMac? I've searched for the answer but can't find a clear yes or no or how to set this up.
    Thanks...

Yes, it's pretty much automatic. You can also control what gets backed up, as follows:
o In Time Machine preferences, Choose Backup Disk, then click Options. A list of locations that are backed up appears.
o To add a new "do not back up" location to the listing, click the "+" button below the list, navigate to the location you want to exclude and click Exclude.
o Click Done to return to Time Machine preferences.

  • Does TM/TC backup external hard drive connected to usb-port of TC?

I have searched the web to find a straight forward answer to this question, but unfortumately have not been able to find it.
The situation is as follows I want to make room om my Mac by copying my local iPhoto library (230Gb) to an external hard drive connected directly to my TC (2Tb) trough the usb-port (which is already up and running). Before deleting the original library I want to be sure that Time Machine also backups the contents of the external hard drive too. And if not, if there is an alternative way of backing up such external hard drive easily, apart from making a hard copy manually.
    Thanks a lot.

Before deleting the original library I want to be sure that Time Machine also backups the contents of the external hard drive too.
    Time Machine cannot do this.
Instead, connect the USB drive (formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled)) directly to your Mac's USB port and move the iPhoto library to that location.
Then, Time Machine will be able to backup both your Mac and the USB hard drive.
Click the Time Machine clock icon at the top of the Mac's screen, then select Time Machine Preferences.
Click Options. By default, you will see that the hard drive is in the list of Excluded items, and will not be backed up.
Click the hard drive to highlight it, then click the - (minus) button to remove it from the list of Excluded items.
Time Machine will now back the drive on the next pass.

  • Backup an external hard drive connected to Airport -- is this possible?

Currently I have a hub connected to my airport extreme. There are 2 external hard drives connected to the hub. One has my iTunes library on it, and the other is being used for time machine backups.
I have no problem doing the backup wirelessly to the one hard drive. In time machine, I could pick either external drive to back up to. What I am trying to do is back up the external drive too. Time machine is only seeing the hard drive on my laptop. The exclude list is blank and when I try to add the itunes HD to the exclude list (to remove it), it won't let me select it-- it is greyed out.
If I connect the itunes HD directly into my laptop, I can run the backup, but that is not very convenient. Is what I am trying to do possible? Does anyone have any ideas? Are there any other posts discussing this (I could not find any with my specific problem).
    Thanks!

That's correct. Time Machine will not back up a network drive (see #2 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip* at the top of this forum).
You're going to need a different app. Which one will depend on where you want the backups to go; some apps will not back-up from a network drive; others won't back up to a network drive. I don't know, offhand, of any that will do both. Perhaps Kappy, V.K., or others will.
For backups to a local disk, try either CarbonCopyCloner (which I use to make a full bootable "clone" in addition to Time Machine), and I think SuperDuper will do this as well. CCC is donationware, so you can try it for a while, then send them some $$ so they can keep it current. It can be scheduled to run automatically, and you have the choice of it keeping only current copies or to archive prior versions as well. SuperDuper has a free version, but you need the paid one (about $30) to do scheduling. I don't know if it will keep archive copies.
There are many other backup apps, some of which will handle network drives. Check Google, VersionTracker.com, or MacUpdate.com.

  • Using iPod with external Hard Drive connected to laptop

Is there a way to use the iPod video and an external hard drive connected to a Dell Latitude D600 laptop at the same time? I can use one or the other but not both. When both are connected using the usb ports on the back of the laptop, the iPod is not recognized, the message pops up saying unknown device. I do have the laptop connected to the power outlet. I have no problem using both when I am connected to the usb ports on the docking station at work, only when I have the stand alone laptop at home. I am using a 250GB Maxtor Personal Storage 3100 hard drive.
I found an article on CNet that suggested updating the bios and laptop software. I did this and still have the same issue.

You might have a drive letter conflict.
Both USB devices might be trying to use the same drive letter, and they're sort of "fighting" with eachother over who gets the letter assigned.
Try changing the drive letter of one of your devices.
You can use this article as a reference for changing the drive letter.

Do I need to keep my external hard drive connected at all times for time capsule?

    Hi,
I have a similar question. I have backed up my external hard drive through my computer, onto my TC. When I go into TM, it doesn't show the external hard drive unless it is connected to the computer. Can I access the info from the external hard drive that is on the TC if I don't have the hard drive plugged in? If so, how can I do that?
