TC restoring from a USB disk

I have a problem trying to restore from a USB drive.
The setup is simple with 2 disks (La Cie) connected to the TC and backing up as planned, at least I can find all files in TM so should be working.
One disk is holding all music file, appox. 100GB. I lost some music files so I wanted to restore.
Restore starts up and ask whether I want to "keep original" "Keep both" or "replace" the folder. Problem is no matter what i do the following message comes up
+The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “Music Content” can’t be read or written. (Error code -36)+
That is regardless which drive I want to recover to, I even make the "Music Content" folder unique but same result.
I hope somebody have an idea on how to recover my data from TC, in the mean time I try whatever I can figure out

Hi Podini,
Thank you for your answer.
I did all the stuff you have mentioned in your guides, before asking. Your guide is excellent as you cover the issues not described anywhere else, as setting up and running a TC is not really flawless. I had 3 crashes since I bought it a few years ago. But this issue was new.
I did just found a solution, of cause not ideal at all but it works.
1. Instead of recovering to the USB drive I recovered to my harddisk (desktop) -with "recover to.." after securing the size of the recovery files was not take more space than what I have on my HD.
2. Then move the USB drive to the laptop and copy over to the USB.
3. Then move the USB back to the TC and make a recover of the desktop again.
etc. etc.
I tried to recover to another USB disk connected to the TC, but that took forever, worked but slow.
I had to do it in 4 steps as I did not have 100GB space on my laptop HD.
It is not ideal but works, which is of cause the main purpose.
I really like the TC but it does takes a bit of insight to get it up running and utilizing everything. It could be nice if setup software was more clear and comprehensive. As there is a lot of good and relevant questions in this forum.
Thanks again and hope you can use my solition

  • Boot from external USB disk

Is there any way to boot from an external USB disk formatted in NTFS or UFS (CD/DVD format)? Basically my idea was to be able to boot the Win7 install image from an USB device. I tried many different ways, I even have my old internal HDD with the boot camp partition in a USB case (I just upgraded to 500GB!! ;)) but I can't in any way boot from USB. Only OSX backup and its installation disk boot fine from an external USB source. Any idea?

It isn't well supported by Microsoft. The problem on Apple hardware is you can't even make changes to the BIOS boot manager.
I have 4 internal hard drives so it is rather easy to boot from one hard drive and run the installer.
You ran into the lack of support for UEFI though which adds another layer and meant most likely having to alter and reburn the ISO to disc with Imgburn or something (and can be done from Windows only so you need a VM).
I got tired of the trouble and work arounds needed though and in the end I just built my own custom PCs - one of which has native eSATA that are bootable (an Intel DX58SO board).
Oh, and it is easy to install Windows 7 on PC, then just move the drive into Mac Pro and boot from there!

  • Lion OSX major network issue with MacBook but cannot restore from Snow Leopard disk - help!

I have a network with an airport extreme with two expresses and a time capsule extending the network.  The network has a Mac, apple TV and two iphones which all connect absolutely fine.  The macbook did too, until I upgraded to 7.6.1 on the airports.  I took the airports back to 7.6 but the Mac simply isn't speaking properly to my extreme.  It drops, speeds up, slows down and works differently in different part of the house.
Been to Genius who said, macbook is fine, try either a completely fresh install on the mac, or reset the network.  The reset of the network hasn't worked, so I wanted to reinstall snow leopard then lion on my mac.  Put the disk in, and it came up with the error can't install the Mac OSX from the install Mac OSX disc.  I have therefore tried the original leopard disks, which simply restart, chime and restart (continuously).
I need some help as this is my work computer and I don't seem to be able to get any help from anyone.
So I need to know the following:
    1) Has anyone got any other solutions for the extreme problem (have tried dragging out the preferences but that didn't work either);
    2) How do you reinstall an OS from the disk - as this in particular is a nightmare.
    3) Anyone able to suggest a work round??
Would be very grateful for assistance.
    Thanks

Hello ddownn and welcome to Apple Support Communities,
Firstly it will help us diagnose your problem to know the exact model, size, year built, RAM installed and OS you're running. That would include the OS and particulars about the Mac Pro.
"this system doesn't beep three times."
The normal diagnosis for that is RAM problems.
"I am able to complete the installation by using the DVD in my Mac Pro in Target Disk Mode with a FireWire cable"
But that shouldn't work because the install (build) would be particular to the Mac Pro.
"I recently installed a new HDD and formatted it from a Mac Pro via Target Disk Mode."
    Partitioned to GUID?
"disk spins up and stops about three times, then ejects and a folder icon with a question mark appears"
These DVD drives in these old laptops can often go bad. Try this:

  • Is it possible for me to install Leopard from my USB Disk?

Hello, I am trying to install my leopard OS onto my HD via USB drive.  I currently have it formatted how it needs to be. When I select it as a startup disk, it reboots and I get a gray screen. Is this normal? Just need to know before I end up restarting the system. It's only been at this screen for about 5 minutes now. I have snow leopard as well and that loads fine (via Dvd) but I want leopard for hardware compatibility reasoning with Pro Tools Mbox 1.
    Imac 5,1

    No OS currently installed

Where did the version of Leopard on the USB drive come from?

  • Restoring from iTunes Backup disks

I backed up my entire library once (> 2500 songs etc.) Since then I have made several backups using the "since last backup" option. I know the restoration process will initialize with the entire library b/u and assume the subsequent "since last backup" disks will be restored in date order.
Is there any limit to the number of "since last backups"?
Any backup/restore tips would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

  • How to do I find the files I restored from my USB

Grandkids playing online video games and the whole pc crashed.  Have it up and running and reinstalled programs.  Cannot find the files/pictures/folders/ documents I restored that were backed up on USB

    @tallylassy
Lok in the backup folder for a file with .exe extension. If you have that it should start the transfer of files to your machin_C:\System Recovery. You can then move them wherever you want them.
    @NewbieL
Your usb flash drive is evidently not recognized as a useable device for Backup. Do you have it plugged in during the scheduling? Is it plugged directly into usb port, not a multi-port hub? You may have to invest in an external usb hdd.

  • Windows 8.1 got corrupted and had to restore from HP recovery disk

My computer running 8.1 started cycling between IE 11 and the Windows 8.1 home screen.  It would not stop so I had to initiate a recovery from my built in HP recovery drive.  When I did this it wiped out my OFFICE 2010 installation.  How do
I re-install?  Doesn't Microsoft have the information that OFFICE 2010 was registered to my ACCOUNT?  I am on travel and don't have access to the CD or the Access key.
    Someone please help!

    Hi,
If you cannot acess to the CD, you can get an Office 2010 installation package from below site, however, you have to enter your 25-character Product Key to download Office program:
    http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/buy/netbook-FX101850729.aspx?CTT=5&origin=HA101828496
The issue is how to get your product key.
If you have ever purchased, downloaded, and installed Office 2010 online, the key was associated with a Microsoft account. You may be able to recover the Office product key in the confirmation email you received when you purchased the product online.
Or you can just contact Microsoft support (https://support.microsoft.com/gp/contact_microsoft_customer_serv?&fr=1) as long as you have a valid proof of purchase.
otherwise, there is very little they can do.
You can refer to this article for more details:

  • How do I restore from an external disk to my new computer?

I changed my PC, and took a copy of all photos to an external drive. Now, when I want to save them to my new PC, it does not succeed - next time I open my Elements, there is a ?-mark, and the program can't find the photo unless I connect the external drive again. How can I save all photos to my new PC?

    Tiramiso
What version of Premiere Elements are you using and on what computer operating system is it running. For now I will assume this involves a media reconnect in Premiere Elements and not the Elements Organizer.
When you import media into a Premiere Elements project, all you get in the project are copies of the originals that are at their hard drive save location. But, the project needs to trace back to the originals at the hard drive save location where they were when they were first imported into the project.
You should not have any problems when importing media from their current location when you open new projects.
How many saved closed projects do you have that were created before you switched the location of the source media of the project. (Remember, you will run into this problem if, after you save close the project, you move, delete, or rename its files/folders.) The "Where is the file....?" messages are good choices for the media reconnects, but... Let us know how many saved closed reopened projects are involved. Also, if the setup on the other computer still exists, it might be a consideration to archive the projects there and transfer the Copied Folder from the archive process to the new computer.
If instead this is a Photoshop Elements Elements Organizer based issue, please let us know.
    Thanks.

  • Q : How to restore from USB if restore partition is removed?

Hi, have made a backup of my Windows 7 cumputer envy 14 spectre to a usb drive with hp recovery manager. After i deleted the restore partition on the drive, and installed Windows 8. Now having sleep/power issues on Windows 8, have to go back to Windoes 7 to test before sending it in for repairs.
Bus even though i have made a USB backup, I cannot boot from the USB drive, and the ect/f11 option on boot, does nothing, windows still just boots.
Now how can i restore from a USB without having access to the F11 restore option on the drive, how to install the System Recovery again?
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

    Hi,
A backup is not a clone. You would need to have cloned the partition to a bootable USB for it to work.
The HP Backup & Recovery Manager does not copy the recovery partition even if you back up the entire hard drive.
Here is a user reference manual for the  HP recovery manager.
Unless you made recovery media in DVD or USB form the only source for it that is available for you is to purchase a set of recovery disks.
I wish I had better news to give you on this.
    Best regards.

  • Deleted files from USB Disk attached to Airport Extreme

I deleted files from a USB disk attached to my airport extreme.  I then needed to recover them  but they are not in the trash can...how can I find and restore these files?  I have not emptied the trash.  I am just looking in the trash in my bar at the bottom bar.  I got the message that asked if I wanted to send them to the trash and I said yes...help, I need the files!
    Thanks,
    Josh

Unfortunately, as the message clearly states.....the file(s) will be deleted immediately....not moved to the trash.
If you want to experiment, a utility like Disk Warrior might be able to salvage some of the data on the disk....IF....you have not made any changes on the disk since you deleted the files.
    http://www.alsoft.com/diskwarrior/
But, it will be much quicker to simply restore a copy of the file(s) from your backups.

  • Damaged install disk for Snow leopard. How can I restore from timemachine

    Hello,
I got SMART warning about my hard disk, I got it replaced by a shop, but said I would do OS restore myself. (cant afford cost )
Thought it would be simple - but it is anything but.
It appears my install DVD is damaged, so was not able to boot with Grey OS install disk - holding the C key.
I managed to get iMac to boot up using the old disk  - using firewire dock. However I was not able to restore old disk and OS to new disk, Due to IO read error.
(this is why I had the SMART warning).
So I am unable to get the OS on the new HD using the old disk or the DVD as these are both damaged.
The computer is running, so I thought I would try buying and downloading LION - then using the migration tool .  The download is still running after 2 days.
I went to apple store, and was told that they cannot replace DVD , so I should bring in the iMac = and pay for the restore.  Dont wish to do this.
As I have the computer and OS running, is there anything I can do to get a time machine restore from another backup disk (USB).
This I hope would resolve my woes.......

Call Apple Customer Support 1-800-767-2775 (telephone numbers for other countries - http://support.apple.com/kb/HE57). Provide the serial number and specifications of the Mac.
Sorry - my profile is wrong. Disk is 10.6.2  It is the original disk that came with the machine.
    Garbage in, garbage out.

  • Time Machine Nightmare-Cannot Restore From External

A few days ago I routinely ran Disk Utility. It reported  that 1) my HD was corrupt, and 2) it was irreparable.  It was recommended that I backup as many files and reformat as soon as possible.
I had been backing up regularly to a WD 1TB external hard drive (FW) since last spring, using Time Machine, so I wasn't concerned (at first).  Apparently, though, it turned out that drive was also corrupt. I got this error message when mounting it to the desktop: "Mac OS X can't repair the disk 'Time Machine.' You can still open or copy files on the disk, but you can't save changes to files on the disk. Back up the disk and reformat it as soon as you can."
Before reformatting my hard drive then, I did another complete Time Machine backup, this time to a *different* external hard drive, a WD 1 TB  drive (USB).  I figured now I was covered—or so I thought.
After reformatting my hard drive, though, I (like an idiot), instead of trying to restore from the lastest backup (the USB drive), tried first to restore from the "Time Machine" external (FW).  The process "seemed" fine until I restarted the computer.  What I was left with were a large number of missing files (including Safari, Quicktime, Quicken and Skype, among many others), but more importantly, I can't now restore from the USB backup either (which, again, is what I should have done in the first place).  Every time I try to open Time Machine preferences, Terminal is opened instead, nor can I access Time Machine through System Preferences, because those won't open at all!  Lastly, if I "Enter Time Machine" through the menu bar, it doesn't see the  USB backup drive, even when it's mounted.
I have searched the discussions and haven't found anything remotely similar to my problem.  My system is FUBAR.  If anyone has any idea how I can restore it from the last Time Machine backup I did just prior to reformatting, I would be forever in your debt.  HELP PLEASE!!!
    Thank you in advance,
    David
I am running OX 10.7.4 on a 2 GHz Intel core 2 Duo MacBook with a 250 GB hard drive and 2 GB of RAM.

It has been my experience that Time Machine is sometimes problematic when the restore conditions are not perfect. I don't have a magic answer to cure your problem.
When I experienced  TM difficulties I started a secondary backup by cloning to an external USB drive which is bootable. This way one has a bootable troubleshooting drive which can be cloned back to the original if needed. Cloning is now my primary backup method. I keep TM for recovery of individual files from a specific time.

  • HT201250 Restoring from TM - Need all programs reinstalled?

Hi - I need to restore my entire system from my TM backup.  I erased my hard drive to reinstall Snow Leopard.  Do I need to resinstall all my programs (i.e. Office, etc.) BEFORE doing a restore from TM in Disk Utility?

it's now asking me if I want to tranfer my information from 1. another Mac, 2. another volume, 3. from a Time Machine... OK... do I press that button?  I suppose I will need to reinstall my programs after to access my files?
If, at this point, you select "from a Time Machine" then your old computer set up should be recreated on the new target. That would include all programs, user accounts, files, etc.
I have done this several times and have never had to re-install anything. You MIGHT need to re-enter an authorization code (e.g. for Microsoft Office, or an Adobe program) depending on whether you are restoring your system to a new hard drive or to the old hard drive. Sometimes when restoring to a new hard drive, the software recognizes that the disk is diffferent and thinks you're on a new computer that requires re-entering the code.
The last time I did this I didn't have to re-enter anything at all. Once I had to re-enter a MS-Office code previously.
