TC suddenly slowing Internet performance
I moved from Linksys to the TC after several bad experiences with Linksys, and now am having the same bad experience with the TC! It's been running for a few months with no problems, and then suddenly this week I started experiencing massive performance degradation of Internet speed. I've read through several older archived threads and this appears to be a pretty regular deal that Apple has not been able to resolve for years. And I DON'T believe that it's related to the wireless portion of the router.
I have a work router hard wired behind the TC, to which I have connected my work MAC, and an IP phone. I usually notice the slow down when my IP phone begins experiencing poor performance. This stuff is all hard wired. A power cycle of the TC fixes the issue every time, but it's gotten to the point where I'm having to power cycle the darn thing every day. It's ridiculous. This HAS to get fixed. This thing costs several times more than the Linksys, so I expect better than this.
i actually just bought a 1TB TC. I have it running as a wireless Backup drive, connected to my already existing WLAN, and when I started the 1st run of Time Machine, my entire network stopped. No network traffic at all, and the TC stopped backing up after 2GB
... i hope I didn't just blow $330 for nothing

The Official OS X Annoyance Thread: Slow Internet Performances
Hi!
It seems that there's a lot of people with poor internet performance out there. I'm surely not alone. And we already crawled every **** google page about it. I tried EVERY solution. The 4.2.2.1 trick, opendns, a lot of different stuff and nothing worked. Nothing!
But it seems that my case is the worst: I'm not limited to 500kb/s. I'm limited to something like 5kb/s!!!
I just have to boot on windows XP and I can fully use my connection. Every computer in the house is running fine so it is NOT the router. (The router is using openDNS as well).
So I would like to ask you people, to try to find a solution <Edited by Moderator>. Because it is a real pain the the *!
I have a Macbook (Early 2006). With the latest updates. So it should not be a problem... Please do something, it's been over a month since I began trying every tip that has been given to me on forums.
Thanks a lot for your help!

Does the router have the very latest firmware? Many routers work well with Tiger and earlier versions of Leopard and PCs, but not with the latest versions of Leopard unless they have the latest firmware updates. -
Sudden Slow Internet (for the past month or two)
Hi all,
I've had my iMac since December 2009 and it's always been well behaved. However, in the past couple of months, the internet speed has been inconsistent to the point where it is now pretty much as slow as it could ever be. Web pages take minutes to load, Dropbox is a no go and Skype just cuts out.
As well as the iMac, I have a Macbook and an iPhone and the internet on these is still as fast as ever.
I rang my internet service provider and they did a few rough tests before claiming it was the Mac that is at fault, especially if the laptop and phone speeds are okay.
So I just wanted to ask, are there any causes for slow internet? Is there anything I can do? Shoudl I investigate further with my ISP?
BenPlease answer as many of the following questions as you can. You may already have answered some of them; in that case, there's no need to repeat the answers.
Restart your router and your broadband device, if they're separate. Any change?
If possible, connect to your router with an Ethernet cable and turn off Wi-Fi. Any difference?
If you can connect to more than one network, are they all the same?
Is networking always the same, or is the problem intermittent?
Disconnect all other devices from the network. Any change?
Boot in safe mode and test. Any difference?
If possible, turn off Bluetooth and disconnect any USB 3 devices. Any difference? -
Hello.
I will be the first one to admit, i am a mac n00b.
i've had my mac since earlier this year and i love it, but in the last week my internet isn't even half of what it used to be.
To begin with, Airport isn't always connecting to my network or it will but for about two seconds. Also, i'll type in the password which i -know- is right, and it says it's invalid. The only way of sorting this out that i've found is to restart my mac at least twice.
When it finally does connect and i can use the internet, it is painfully slow. Well, painfully slow to someone who is used to instant page uploads. The worst is, when i try and download something, something that was taking 2 minutes to finish is now taking 2 hours. My current download speed is 11.4 kb/s for a 84.4MB file.
The worst is the PCs in the house are working and my ibook (which is using an older version of Safari) is getting the kind of speeds i used to. I'm using Safari 4 which i've read can screw everything up.
I really hope i'm not repeating what others have already put, but if i am please redirect me.
ThanksAlso: I decided to see if Firefox 3.0.10 was any better and it was, slightly. I was getting a 32.3 kb/s download speed on a 61.3 MB file.
And if there's more information about my system and such that someone needs to help me, i'll try and get you the information but as i said, i'm a n00b.
Thanks again -
Slow Internet Performance on Streaming Applications - G4 Quicksilver
This is a repost of a problem I was having before I spent a few months in the Middle East and having returned home I find I am sadly no further forward with. I would appreciate any help to fix iot as it drives me mad that I can not use my G4 to talk on Skype or access streamed radio shows.
I have a Quicksilver G4 upgraded witha Giga Designs Dual 1.33 GHz processor, clocked to run at 1.47 GHz. My Internet connection is 2Mb Broadband connected via an etrhernet cable through a Netgear DG834G router.
I get fast browsing and downloading using a web browser, but when I try and use any streaming applications such as Skype or the BBC radio player (using Real Plugin), audio quality is terrible as the internet radio connection speed drops off from a nominal 45kps to around 12kps. Skype is unusable as the connection is so slow that people spaek in slow motion. My Powerbook 1.5Ghz connected via airport to the same router has no trouble at all and I can speak on Skype quite happily and get good quality on the radio via Real Player.
Can anybody suggest why my Quicksilver G4 is so sluggish on these specific internet applications - I am already running the latest versions of the software involved and 10.4.6 Could it be anything to do with my ethernet connection - but if so why is web browsing OK?
Thanks in advanceOverclock makes no difference. It can't be an ISP problem as my PowerBook exhibts no such problems to the same ISP using the same router (nor does my son's iMac G4). All my other computers access the internet via wireless Airport - This is the only one that uses a direct ethernet connection to the router, so I am slightly suspect of that - ethernet connection is set to automatic in the Network preferences.

Hi there
I'm looking for help with my Internet. I don't really know anything technical or what not so you'll have to advise me as much as you can. All I know is that my Internet used to be around 8 mb (I think) and now is around 6. I have run a speed test however I cannot remember the result and it won't let me run another one.
Please let me know what information I can provide you to help me resolve this issue.
Much appreciated.
GordonHello ,
Can you please post your ADSL stats by following this direct link; http://192.168.1.254/ and go to A-Z (top right) and then ADSL Status and post everything including Line Attenuation, Noise Margin, Connection Speed, Errors etc...
Also we need a speedtest just to have a look and make sure everything's okay? Use this link http://bit.ly/uViAXN and post all the required info Throughput, IP Profile etc..). If that one doesn't work then try this work around link http://bit.ly/tIPNYA .
Run a line test to determine if or not it is an external problem: http://goo.gl/J25w8
Can you also confirm if you're connected at the master socket or an extension? And what your type your master socket is according to this picture
Lastly for now, call 17070 and Press Option 2 for the Quiet Line test and where possible use a corded phone as DECT handsets can pick up electrical interference?
Are you connected Wirelessly or through a cable?
Regards Edd

Sudden slow graphics performance in Windows
I'm using Boot Camp on my Retina MBP and it ran games like Borderlands 2 and League of Legends fine at high settings. Today, their frame rates dropped by about half. I have no idea why. GPU usage as shown by GPU-z was still at 100% during games and was at full clock speed.. I tried different graphics drivers, reinstalling Windows, wiping NVRAM, and am currently reinstalling OSX to see if it makes a difference. So far, nothing has worked. Does anyone know what the problem might be and how to fix it?
OK: This worked for me:
You need reset the SMC.
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3964
You have to shutdown the computer,
make sure it's connected to power and press:
Left shift + CTRL + ALT (Option key) + PowerON Button
(It won't turn on, the power light on your cable should flash green).
Now restart it.
Trine 2 now glistens perfectly. I'll now have to see what happens on the other side... -
Slow Internet ... all of a sudden?
Well, like most people, when I signed up with Verizon, I bought the ''fastest internet.'' It was fine for a while, but around September, we decided to upgrade our channel package - and our internet to the new ''fastest internet'' which I believe was the 25/25. We had my whole family over on Christmas (everyone hooked to my wifi) with no issue.
Now we're in February and all of sudden it takes up to 5 minutes to load a show on Netflix (played through our roku). I called customer service and they persuaded me to upgrade to the 50/50. Of course the slow internet is still an issue. We disconnect all computers and our Verizon wireless phones to try and get our streaming speed up to par.. still no luck. My bundled deal is costing us almost $200 (that’s with the reduced channel package and upgraded internet speed), and I'm feeling so incredibly ripped off. For that kind of money, I should be streaming with no problem. Can't wait to get out of contract. I'm just trying to understand what changed. You are not alone.
See here: http://forums.verizon.com/t5/FiOS-Internet/Extreme-drop-in-download-speed-every-night-10PM-11PM/td-p...
The fact that they convinced you that 25 Mbps is not enough for a couple tablets streaming simultaneously is probably exactly what they want. -
Rainbow spinning cursor and slow internet recently
I am not very tech savvy but I will try and describe what is going on. Recently (last week or so) my computer has been extremely slow and the rainbow spinning cursor seems to appear all the time. I notice it mainly when I am using the internet, mainly because I am mostly on the internet when I use my computer. I believe it is a problem with my computer because my husband has a 2011 MacBook Pro and he does not have any problems with his computer. My computer is a 2010 MacBook Pro, and I ran an Etre Check to see if it helps. I typically use Google Chrome as my browser (we both do) and my operating system is OS X.

Very slow internet after installing 10.5.3
Hello all, this is the very first time I have encountered any problems with my Macbook and I am hoping I can get some help here.
About a month ago I came home from college and hooked my Macbook up to the wireless router at home, everything was running fine. We have fiber optic internet so usually my speeds are blazing fast. Recently however I installed the 10.5.3 update and now my internet speeds are very dismal. I am having trouble getting my Macbook to connect to the router at all, much less load any web pages.
I have taken an ethernet cable and plugged my Macbook directly in to the router to see if things load any faster, and unfortunately things are still just as slow over a wired connection. After typing in a URL you will sit there at a blank web page for about 45 seconds to a minute before it even starts loading the page, and when the page does load it takes forever to pull up and images take even longer to display. If it helps at all our router is a dlink DI-524 wireless router.
I was browsing through these forums yesterday to see if I could find a solution to my issue. so far I have tried the following:
-set router to broadcast in G mode only (instead of mixed mode)
-removed encryption from router
-tried various encryption settings (64 bit WEP, 128 bit WEP, WPA, etc)
-updated the firmware of my router
-created test account on my macbook, opened internet browser on it, everything still runs slow
-deleted cache for safari/mozilla as well as the .plist files, still slow internet
when i called apple the agent suggested putting in my os X CD and do an archive and install, i did and once i was set back to os X 10.5 i was unable to connect to wifi at all, and wired connection over ethernet seemed just as slow as before. when i check for apple updates the 10.5.3 update was my only option, i couldnt choose 10.5.2 so installing that would put me back where i was before.
in the end i set my computer up last night to do a restore from my time machine backup. my machine has been restored to the backup i created just before i tried the archive and install, so im back to running OS X 10.5.3 now.
I'm sorry this post got so long, I just wanted to make sure that I included details of what I've done so far. Again I would like to stress that I am having this problem on my macbook even with my computer hooked directly to the router with my ethernet cable. (using that same cable and hooking up any one of my windows computers in the house results in fast and effortless web browsing so i know the cable is good)It's not a matter of Mac OS X being "picky" but rather various ISPs not keeping up with changes in the DNS standard.
In the most recent case, 10.5.3 had to revert to a previous method of performing some DNS lookups because various ISPs hadn't bothered to update their servers to handle what has been the recommended way of handling lookups for the past eight years.
OpenDNS also has done a lot of work to make sure their DNS servers work as fast as possible; ISPs have absolutely no incentive whatsoever to provide fast DNS services. -
10.7.5 suddenly slows and then freezes
My computer has just started to suddenly slow way down and then it freezes completely. When I reboot it seems fine, for perhaps 10 minutes or half an hour, but then it starts to lock up again. Any idea what the problem is? Here is my EtreCheck report:
Problem description:
Mac works perfectly normally for an hour or so and then suddenly slows and then freezes.
EtreCheck version: 2.1.8 (121)

I bought a replacement drive and am restoring my time machine back up now.
I am a bit annoyed that the B&H guys got this one wrong but I have to give them credit for underselling me rather than overselling me; I do appreciate that.
Also worth mentioning is that the 3TB Seagate drive was less than 2 years old and is supposedly still under warrantee. I am looking forward to seeing what kind of support I get from them.
So big thanks to you, Bob, for your very good suggestions. The Apple community has come through strong for me and I appreciate it. -
Slow internet connection via AirPort on MacBook running 10.5.7
The internet connection via AirPort on my MacBook is frustratingly slow, and I have no idea why.
I have an AirPort Extreme connected to a Virgin Media cable modem, a new iMac and a two year-old MacBook, both running 10.5.7. No problems at all with the wireless connection on the iMac - I get the full near-10Mbps download speed I'm paying for, despite the fact it's at the other end of the house. Not so on the MacBook, where I get barely 2Mb, even if I'm sat next to the router.
I've had other AirPort problems since the 10.5.6 update - notably one common to a lot of people on here, it seems, of the AirPort dropping the wireless connection every 2 mins. This was only 'fixed' by the fairly drastic workaround of essentially abandoning my user account and connecting via a different one.
For the slow internet problem, I've tried resetting the PRAM, turning off my cordless landline phone, changing the wireless channel - to no avail. I can't test the wired connection as my MacBook doesn't recognise my Ethernet port, it would seem, and hasn't for a long time.
Can anyone help? Thanks in advance. For the slow internet problem, I've tried resetting the PRAM, turning off my cordless landline phone, changing the wireless channel - to no avail. I can't test the wired connection as my MacBook doesn't recognise my Ethernet port, it would seem, and hasn't for a long time.
I assume that you meant NVRAM as PRAM is not used with Intel-based Macs. Regardless, network settings are not stored here and resetting it won't really help. The fact that your MacBook is not recognizing the built-in Ethernet port is telling me that may have an issue with the system board ... that may be showing up as poor performance with the AirPort as well. I suggest that you take your MacBook in to your local Apple Store to have them take a look. -
hi folks,
back again with slow internet on my INtel Mini with Leopard installed. Things ALL worked fine after the upgrade but the last couple of days the internet seemed slow (slow page loading). I posted about this previously and found that Yasu and/or OnyX cleared up some digital garbage and restored performance. However, this time, no such luck. Speed tests show the mini to be slower (33% or less) that a similarly equipped iBook G4.
Intel Mac Mini, Leopard 10.5.1, Firefox, Yasu, OnyX. It's not a DNS issue, pages load similarly with IP addresses or words.
Any ideas? TIAHiya,
Sorry for leaving out some info, I had this problem before and it was solved by Yasu/Onxy. Recap: Mac mini and IbookG4, very much identical set up. Wirelessly, in same location, iBook is >3Mbps in a speed test when Mini is 1.0 (Ibook closer to airport, over 4). Wired, both are 7-8Mbps. Changed DNS things, no improvement. cleaned caches of Firefox, no improvement. Downloaded Yasu and OnyX, ran through both and bingo, the speed on the mini went to over 3. Now: Several weeks ago, upgraded to leopard. No problems on either computer, but at some point, internet on the mini was again slow. (Ibook getting 3-4, mini getting around 1) Cleaned with yasu and onyx, this time no help. I have been using speedtest.surewest.net but just tried myspeed.visualware.com.

I have Comcast cable with internet and a new Vudu box (new internet movie download thing--very nice actually). vudu is a wired connection to the airport. I disconnected the Vudu, that this difference between test one and 2, but I don't think it's the true basis for our slow download numbers. test 3, with Vudu reconnected, 1.4Mbps download, 2.3 upload.
any tips greatly tried and reported back to this thread. -
Mac suddenly slow, overheating, spinning ball of death, hard to reboot.
Problem description:
Mac suddenly slowed down, especially when using Safari - spinning ball of death, pages won’t load, etc. Hard drive appeared to get “stuck” causing overheating and had trouble even shutting down with the button, and then wouldn’t reboot for about an hour.

Mar 17, 2015, 12:07:54 PM /Library/Logs/DiagnosticReports/cfprefsd_2015-03-17-120754_[redacted].crashSeems to have worked.
We hooked up the external HD, turned on Time Machine, and everything backed up.
Then we ran Disk Utility. The disk repair required the reboot thing and took two tries. Then repaired permissions. Also updated Flash.
Seems to be running okay now, but we have ordered a new SSD (as well as a new iMac 5k ). We use multiple computers so hoping we can get a couple more years of use out of this old computer as it ran fast and fine until this problem.
Thank you so much for your help! We really appreciate it. -
I have very slow internet even though my provider says the speed is fast
I am experiencing very slow internet even though my provider says that my speed is fast. The uploading of a page takes long to complete
If Safari is getting very slow:
(Presumably you regularly empty your Safari cache by deleting the following file:
Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/cache.db
and clear your History)
Adding Open DNS codes to your Network Preferences, should give good results in terms of speed-up as well as added security, (including anti-phishing and redirects) (Full information about Open DNS is here: http://www.opendns.com/home/nobloat ) and further independent information can be read here:
http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-57338784-263/free-dnscrypt-tool-enhances-ma c-web-security/?tag=mncol;txt
and here:
http://www.macworld.com/article/1146064/troubleshootdns.html?t=234
If you are using a single computer: Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu, and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' add the following two numbers:
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220
(You can also enter them if you click on Advanced and then DNS)
Sometimes reversing the order of the DNS numbers can be beneficial in cases where there is a long delay before web pages start to load, and then suddenly load at normal speed:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2296
If your computer is part of a network:please refer to this page: http://www.opendns.com/start/best_practices/#your_network and follow the advice given.
If you use a Router, make sure it has the latest firmware installed.
One reason for a slowness in page loading may be the 'DNS Pre-fetching' feature of Safari 5.x as is described here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3408?viewlocale=en_US
You can cancel DNS pre-fetching by going to Terminal and typing:
defaults write com.apple.safari WebKitDNSPrefetchingEnabled -boolean false
You have to restart Safari for it to take effect.
If Safari seems to hang for ages:
If you have a lot of tabs open and/or a lot of pages running Flash, Safari can sometimes 'hang', requiring a restart of Safari. This can often be inconvenient, and as it is rarely Safari itself that is hanging but merely one of its plug-ins, usually Flash, there is a way using Terminal to restart the plug-ins (without restarting Safari and losing your tabs) by quitting the WebPluginHost process:
Open the Terminal from the Utilities folder in /Applications and type
killall -9 WebKitPluginHost
Note that this command kills all Safari plug-ins, not just Flash. All plug-ins should start back up when you reload the page.
Then go back to Safari and refresh any pages that were using the Flash plug-in. This also fixes the Beachball of Death. Try this whenever Safari gets slow or freezes. The later versions of Flash 10.1 onwards appear to have improved the situation somewhat, but haven't completed eliminated it.
For this and other reasons Apple switched their websites to HTML5 in January 2011:

For Snow Leopard/Lion users this should also be read:
