TC - using an existing external HD with Data on it

I just got a TC and I'd like to attach an External HD to it so I can share the files on the HD across the network. (Basically, a NAS).
The files already on the HD don't show up via sharing when connected to the TC.
Files I added to the HD while connected to the TC don't show up when the HD is attached to my Mac directly via USB.
Is there some way to make the same files available regardless of where I attach the drive?
- Ray

Yes. Time Machine works better if it is in total control of its storage space.
Of course partitioning the drive in a Time Capsule is only possible by removing it and doing the partitioning on another computer.
If this were mine I would get another external drive and connect that to the Time Capsule. Move your data to the new external and allow Time Machine to use the whole internal drive in the Time Capsule instead.

  • Using the same external drive with Time Machine on new mac?

I recently got a new mac because my old one broke. Thankfully, I had a fresh backup on Time Machine ready to restore onto my new computer. But when I try to use Time Machine with my new computer, it keeps wanting to do a whole new backup. It won't recognize the latest backup to only add new or changed files.
Here's a breakdown of my events:
    new computer
restore Time Machine on new computer at install
want to continue using the external drive with Time Machine from where I left off (only adding new files since the last backup) on my new computer
Time Machine wants to do a whole new backup
Question: How can I continue to use my existing external hard drive with Time Machine on my new computer, picking up where I left off (not a new, complete backup)?
My old computer was Snow Lepoard, my new one is Lion.

That should have left a "trail" in your SystemMigration log, so Time Machine can figure out what happened and automatically "inherit" the old backups.  But sometimes, obviously, that doesn't work.
Since it didn't, there's a chance you can do it manually.  See #B6 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting.

i have a new mini mac and i want to use my existing external hard drive but it needs to be reformated how do i do this without loosing all my old photos?

    Formatting will erase the drive.
You need to copy the photo's to either your old computer, the Mac Mini or to a new external drive and then decide what to do with your existing external drive.
For example: You could use one External drive for Photo's and one external drive for Time Machine to backup both your Mac Mini and the Photo drive.

  • Can I use a 2tb external drive with Time Machine to backup my Mac Mini (256gbSSD + 2tbHDD)?

Can I use a 2tb external drive with Time Machine to backup what I have on my Mac Mini?
My Mac Mini has one 256 SSD and one 2tb HDD. I want to use Time Machine to do a backup of everything.
Would an external 2tb My Passport Drive by Western Digital work for the backup?
It seems like it would not work because the total storage on the Mac Mini is 2304 gigabytes (SSD + HDD).
And the external Western Digital drive is only 2048 in gigabytes versus 2304 gigabytes the Mac Mini has.

No. A Time Machine backup drive should have at least twice the capacity of the drive it backs up. You would need at least a 4 TB backup drive for Time Machine.
Might I suggest as an alternative that you not use Time Machine but a third-party backup utility that simply overwrites older files with new ones such that the backup drive can be the same capacity as the drive backed up.

  • Has anyone tried using a JavaScript External Library with 64bit InDesign?

I have an event listener that calls a JavaScript file. The JS script uses a c++ external library. All works fine with 32 bit InDesign including the new cloud version, but I get an "I/O error" when trying to load the library from  a 64bit InDesign generated event. I have even tried using the sample project BasicExternalObject and get the same error.
Any thots would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi Zhiqiang_Li <http://forums.adobe.com/people/Zhiqiang_Li> ,
Yes, I got this working some time ago. I am not a mac user but perhaps the general principle is the same:
In Windows 64, if your application is compiled 64bit then you can only access InDesign 64bit and its object library. However if your app is 32 bit then you can only access InDesign 32bit and its object library.
Sorry I don’t know more about the mac. All of our users (200+) use InDesign for windows so of course our app is also windows based. Does the mac support both a 32 and 64 bit version of InDesign? If not my solution will not be much help.

  • RAID1 Partitions disappeared when one of the mirrored HDD is used as an external drive for data rescue.

Hi, I have mirrored build of two identical 1TB HDD in my Xserve Late 2006 (RAID 1) in Bay 2 and Bay3. When I took one HDD out and connected it as an external drive to my MacBook Pro, only the first partition appeared. That is, for instance, I have RAID partition A1, A2, A3 in Xserve but only A1 appears when the drive is connected to MacBook Pro as an external drive. Is there any way to let partition A2, A3 appear too? Thanks.

Oh, I didn't realise you were using the hardware RAID card for this. In that case, yes, that makes sense, you won't see the other partitions because they're handled by the RAID card. I admit I'd never tried it with a RAID 1 mirror where you might expect to - I've only used RAID 5 on the hardware cards where there's no expectation, of course, to pull a drive to relocate the data.
So you may ask why not just use a single partition for my RAID1 design. The reason is that I prefer to partition HDD because it is good for HDD lifespan. I don't like to design my parition schema to be just a single big parition with 1T Hard Drive since all data are going to be stored scattered and hence, taking longer for spindle reading.
I don't agree with most of this statement. I've not seen anything that indicates partitioning improves lifespan - for any given data, the disk spins the exact same number of times, and the heads move the same number of times, regardless of the partitioning - partitioning is only a logical, not a physical, construct.
As for the data being scattered and spindle latency, that's nowhere near the problem it used to be in the past thanks to faster spindles and larger caches. In addition, Mac OS X uses a dynamic reallocation/fragmentation system that automatically (re)allocates files as they're used, meaning you don't have the level of fragmentation that you used to have.
The primary benefit of partitioning is to restrict file system sizes so that you don't get a runaway proceess filling up the entire disk. Even that is less of a problem - when an 8GB drive was large it didn't take much to fill it, but you'd have to have a pretty rampant process to fill up a 1TB drive before alarms started ringing.

  • Using itunes from external harddrive with orig playlist.

Hi all i am new so dont kill me i want to take my music off my macbook pro and access it from my external hard drive. is there a way that i can transfer the the files with playlist and re open itunes using my external drive and have all the playlist there. also when i save music how do i set it up to save to the external hd? this way i can take it to my office if i need to use it or my other systems. Please point me in the right direction.

To move your iTunes music and info to an external drive...
    Quit iTunes.
Move the entire iTunes folder including music to the external drive.
Click on the iTunes icon to start it, then immediately press and hold the Shift key in Windows, Option key in Mac.
iTunes will ask to Create new library or Choose existing library. Select Choose existing library and select the library in the folder you just moved.
Move the old iTunes folder to the trash but do not empty it.
Restart iTunes normally and verify the songs work. If they do, empty the trash.

  • Cloning TC backups to external HD with data on it already - should i partition the HD? How to do this safely?

hi. i found a discussion directing how to clone backups onto a HD for proper backup transfer. what it didn't anwer for me, was something else. i have data on the HD i am trying to use as a temp destination for my TC backups. • Add a Partition to External HD with data

    Hello all,
I'm trying to move my iTunes library from my external HD to my work PC(laptop). The library was on my MacBook Pro originally, however when I rec'd Snow Leopard I needed to back everything up on my external to wipe my laptop to do a fresh install. Stupidly, I formatted the external for Mac only (not Fat32) so it won't directly read on my PC to pull off my music. I'm wondering how I can go about adding a new partition to the external on my MacBook without losing the current data on it so I can format that partition for Fat32 to be able to use it for both laptops.
    Thank you,
    Jason

It sounds like your drive has the Apple Partition Map scheme; MS-DOS (FAT) and ExFAT formats are not available on such disks. See #8 in that link.
You'd have to copy everything somewhere, reformat it with the GUID Partition Map Scheme, and the formats you'd like. Those two can be read and written by Macs and PCs without 3rd party programs.
There are some 3rd-party programs that will let PCs use Mac OS Extended partitions. I don't do Windoze myself, and don't recall the names offhand, but you should be able to find them via Google or the +Windows Compatibility+ forums here.

  • Using a seagate external drive with multiple macs

i got a 1TB seagate external hard drive for backup and transfer purposes... it had a little program to help set it up and i set it up for use with mac and pc ( only onther option was stricty this computer.) it works on my computer and a pc but when i tried transfering files from another older mac i have it showed that i could only read on that computer...
how can i get it to work with multiple macs...?

I have the oldest macbook (1.83. 2 gigs ram, 60 gig internal hard drive)
I have all my logic content on my external maxtor firewire 400 drive (usb 2.0 is actually faster than firewire 400) and everything is fine. the good thing is if your external drive has 7200rpm, but the ones with 5600rpm should do as well.
Once you drag your apple loops to logic from your external drive, logic will remember for the next visit. And when you are opening a project which is on the external drive , just find it with logic finder and all should be fine.

  • How do I use an existing cfp program with a new unit?

I have an existing compact fieldpoint setup (IAK file & Programs) that I would like to install on a new unit.  How can this be achieved?

Hi DavK.  Unfortunately there can be a lot of 'well, that depends' in how you go about moving an application
to a new FieldPoint controller.  The following is based on the assumption that you do not have the development
environment available; if you do, it is probably easier to just recompile targeting the new controller.
    The exe is fairly easy:
    1) ftp into the controller
    2) cd to ni-rt\startup
    3) rename startup.exe or startup.rtexe to 'something else'
    4) delete 'something else'
    5) ftp in the new startup.exe or startup.rtexe
    6) ftp in any supporting files (i.e. for external calls)
    7) in c:\ni-rt.ini set  RTTarget.ApplicationPath=c:\ni-rt\startup\startup.exe (or .rtexe)
    8) in c:\ni-rt.ini set RTTarget.LaunchAppAtBoot=True
The .iak setting is probably easiest to re-create with MAX, rather than copy in.
The depends part comes in with how the I/O channels were named or referenced in the .exe.  As long
as everything was done in a generic (consistent between controllers) way you could be ok.
My guess is that if you have trouble it will be here.
    Hope that helps.

  • Can i use a seagate external drive with my mac?

Hi, probably a dumb question but i want to make sure before i buy, can i use this drive-

The hard drive itself is excellent. I have two external FireWire/USB 2.O drives, both of which contain Seagate drives similar in specification to the one you propose to buy, though both are 300GB in size. My question is whether the drive enclosure is a good buy (i.e. one that will work with your Mac). You want an enclosure with a good FireWire Bridge chip, such as the Oxford 911, which is known to work well with Macs. I looked at your link, but I could not tell which chip is found in the enclosure.
I would not buy this until you find out what kind of FireWire Bridge is in the enclosure.

You'll pay a bit more for a similar hard drive at OWC than the one you are considering presently, but as they say, you get what you pay for. OWC backs it products with a great warranty, too.

  • Using a usb external drive with logic

I have a 500 GB Lacie usb hard drive which I'm currently using just to backup my system. (Still on Tiger by the way.) I'm in an older intel iMac (1.83. 2 gigs ram, 250 gig internal hard drive). After installing LP 8 and all the bells and whistles on the internal drive I now have less than half of my internal drive space available. My logic project files are there as well. Not a big problem but I'm trying to look further down the road... Usb drives are slower than firewire but my projects are relatively simple. I don't record more than 2 tracks simultaneously and rarely exceed 24 tracks total for a song. Two questions. First can I get by with my usb external drive? And second how do I move my projects onto and external drive and still have logic know where they are? Thanks

I have the oldest macbook (1.83. 2 gigs ram, 60 gig internal hard drive)
