TC wireless speed issue.

I performed a hard reset due to connection issues. Kept losing the connection which I thought was Comcast but appears to be TC.
I have my laptop setup via ethernet to the modem and speed test is returning 24 & 4 for down/up loads.. My desktop is upstairs and connect wireless with the speed test results coming in at 1 & 4. Any idea why the download speed would be so bad and is there anything I can do to improve other than moving modem upstairs?

So it appears that it is related to the distance from the TC to the other computer.
It is much more likely that the problem is related to obstructions in the signal path....not distance. The TC wireless will easily go up to 150-160 feet or about 50 meters with no obstructions in the signal path.
But, a typical wall of sheetrock or wallboard and 2 x 4s in a home will absorb, on average about 15-25% of the signal. A ceiling is typically about 3 times the density of a wall, so anywhere from 60-70% of the signal is not going to make it through.
If the signal must pass through a few walls and a ceiling, there just isn't much left of the signal....even if it only travels a distance of 20-25 feet. So distance is not the issue.....obstructions are.
Adding an AirPort Express may help. But, adding it in the wrong location will not. If it is located too close to the TC, then not enough signal reaches the upstairs area. If the Express is located too far from the TC, then it receives a very weak signal....and it can only "extend" what it receives.
You could try locating the Express at different locations to see if you can find one that works satisfactorily, but ultimately, you may need to think about running an Ethernet cable upstairs and connecting another AirPort there to give you the wireless signal coverage that you need.
If you cannot run the Ethernet cable, you might want to consider using a pair of Homeplug Ethernet powerline adapters to possibly send the signal over the existing AC power lines in your home. The theory here is that you already have the wiring in place....you just need the adapters.
The reality is that these devices do not always work well in every situation. So, if you decide to try them, it would be a good idea to understand the stores' return policy in advance in case you need to try other models...or powerline adapters simply do not work in your situation.

  • WRT54G V3.0 Wireless Speed Issue - ping example

    Hello:
I have been having very odd wireless connectivity issues with my router. The issue happens randomly, and from what I can tell, it is not based on interference.
Basically my wireless connection always stalls. Sometimes it quits all together. I get the exact same result weather I am one foot or twenty feet away from the router.
This can clearly be displayed by pinging my device:

(it should be noted that if i plug directly into the router via ethernet I get perfect pings / no stalls like above)
My current Firmware Version is: v4.30.5
Here is what I've tried changing/testing and had the exact same results with:
-Tried every wireless channel- and i've tried wireless G only.
-Reset back to the default firmware/flashed the device/reinstalled everything etc etc- many times
    -disabled any wireless security
-turned off all bluetooth devices, wireless phones or cordless phones in the area (no microwaves are running).
If i use another wireless router (i borrowed my AP from work one night), it works perfectly, no issues. This is why I think it may be a hardware issue with my router. (There are other wireless routers in the area, but my testing router from work is just fine with the others).
Is it possible I have a hardware issue with this WRT54G?
If not, what other things can i try?
Thank you for any help you may have.
    Happy New Year!

  • E1200 strange wireless speed issue

I posted this on another forum and thought I'd post it here as well.
Currently have Comcast's Performance tier internet and usually get anywhere from 22-27mbps down and 4-5mbps up which has treated us well.
Xfinity SMCD3GNV gateway modem in bridge mode so I can use my own router
Desktop #1 is hard wired to router
Desktop #2 is wirelessly connected (has Asus PCE-N15 wireless NIC in it - driver up to date)
    Macbook wirelessly connected
Xbox 360 S hard wired to router
    Nokia Lumia 900 wirelessly connected
I have a few different routers (Asus rt-n56u, Linksys e1200, Linksys WRT54GL all with latest firmwares) that I mess with far too often and am having a weird issue with the e1200.  What I found is that when I am using the e1200 every device works fine and gets the normal speed (22-27 down/5 up) except desktop #2. The speeds are absolutely atrocious. Even the WRT54GL which is wireless G smokes the e1200, but only on desktop #2. I thought it might be a setting which is different than when I test the other routers, but I make sure they are all the same. The download speeds sometimes barely get to 5mbps but upload speeds are fine on desktop #2 with the e1200 whereas with the WRT54GL and rt-n56u the download speeds are 20+mbps. Would anyone have any idea why this would be? Just kind of strange that every device works as it should other than one computer with the e1200, but that computer isn't effected when the other routers are tested with the same settings.  Things I have tried are:
-Made sure the router was running the latest firmware
-Made sure the wireless adapter had the latest driver
-Rolled back the driver on the wireless adapter
-Turned off ipv6 in the wireless adapter settings
-Changed the channel width on the router from auto (20/40) to strictly 20mhz
-Changed wireless channel from auto to 1,6,11
    -Toggled WMM on and off
All of these things made no difference for desktop #2 and it can only achieve around 3-5mbps with the e1200. The Asus is probably a faster router overall, but I'd sort of rather use the e1200 IF I can figure this problem.  Thanks for your time!

Just checked the options for the wireless card and unfortunately that isn't an option.  For "wireless mode" the only options are: IEEE 802.11b, IEEE 802.11b/g, and IEEE 802.11b/g/n.  Of course I have it set to the last option and the speeds are still the same.  I have included a url to screenshots of each of the settings so maybe someone can point out something that might help.  Thanks for your time.

  • Airport wireless speed issues.

    Hello all.
First off, I'd like to say, I'm new at this stuff, so go easy.
The problem I'm having is that recently after soft resetting my airport, I can't seem to: 1. keep a steady connection and 2. have download speeds that are horrendously slow (compared to what I got, say, last week.) I've already tried a hard reset as well, and I know it can't be an interference issue, because I got poor speeds even while having my iBook directly across from the router. Wired speeds are equally as slow.
As per another thread I saw, I tried changing my WPA protection to WEP, but that didn't do the trick, and now my Windows XP (wireless) desktop and laptop won't connect at all.
    Any ideas?

But that's what's odd, the wired speeds when directly connected to my cable modem were fine and fast, but when connected to the router, they're horrible.

  • Wireless Speed Issue With A Linksys WRT54G

I just had a 10Mbps cable connection installed in my house.
I have 2 desktop PCs plugged in to the 10 / 100 switch ports in the back of the WRT54G.
I also have a laptop with a built in wireless G card.
I wanted to verify the speed of the line so I ran a speed test from my ISPs website.
The desktop PCs show me that I am getting anywhere from 16 - 20 Mbps.
The laptop using a wireless connection will only get to 5 - 6 Mbps.
The laptop using a wired connection will get to the 16 - 20 Mbps.
Being that wireless G is rated at 54 Mbps should I not be able to achieve the 16 - 20 Mbps?
I will mention as well that when I performed the test on the wireless the laptop was less than 5 feet away from the WRT54G with a clear line of sight.

I think that is normal. The wireless connection is generally half of wired. Even with regards with the actual internet speed. Even i get similar kind of results.

  • Time Capsule wireless speeds issue

I recently upgraded my internet service to a 16 Mbps cable modem service, and am thrilled with the speeds I'm getting when my iMac or MBP is directly connected to the Time Capsule by ethernet. When connected in this fashion, I can easily download at 2.0 MB/sec or more. On wireless, however, there is a discrepancy I cannot explain. Although the iMac and MBP can transfer data over wireless between each other at speeds of several MB/sec or more, when I try to download from the internet over the Time Capsule wireless I get only 200-400 KB/sec. Obviously there's nothing inherently limiting the wireless to those speeds, so I cannot explain it. Using one of the older 1 TB Time Capsules at 2.4 GHZ, 802.11n (b/g compatible - no option to change near as I can tell), WPA personal, and I have an Airport Express N at the other end of the house to extend the range. Any thoughts?

I'm sure this doesn't help you, but I think I have the exact opposite experience from you. When I connect to my Time Capsule with either ethernet or wifi, I can download from the internet at speeds of 14000Kbps, which is about 1.4MBps, I guess. For the LAN, if I'm connected via ethernet, I can get pretty phenomenal speeds. But if even one system is connected via AirPort, the speed drops to where I'm struggling to get 1KBps. It makes streaming to my AppleTV impossible - I need to decide a day early about any movies to watch. And syncing up iTunes between my desktop and laptop takes hours if done over WiFi as opposed to taking seconds if done over ethernet. So far I've found no option to select to speed things up. I hope you find an answer - maybe my problem is related to yours.
For changing to 802.11n only, I've never found a way that would work either.

  • Problem with the wireless speed on windows with bootcamp

I've got a problem with the following:
the wireless card of my mac pro is very slow when i run windows on my mac pro with bootcamp
When i just run OSX everything works fine, but in windows, when I connect to the wireless my wireless speed
    drops to 11-18mbs.
First I thought that it was a drivers issue, but after the update of bootcamp drivers 1.4 the problem still exist.
First I had a Topcom wireless router now I've bought a Apple Airport Extreme, but the problem isn't solved yet...
The router isn't 2 meters away from my mac.
And the wireless speed is fine when i connect with my dads windows laptop...
Does anyone has a solution? using a cable isnt a solution for me because in September I will move with my mac pro one floor down.

You might want to ask this in the Boot Camp forums. As your wireless work fine under Mac OS X it sounds to be a software issue as opposed to a hardware one which means as Windows users they'll better be able to help.

  • Log In Error and Poor Wireless Speed

    Hello Forum Members,
I just picked up a EA6500 wireless router today and I am a bit disappointed. I paid $199 for this router because I was hoping to take advantage of of fast N speeds and the advanced features it offers.
When I first logged in to set up the router, I saw an amber exclamation point with a note that read "Updating Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Service". When I put my password in I was met with a "Unexpected Error" message.
    Any idea what that means?
Any idea how to fix it?
Also, the firmware updater doesn't work.
Minor issues but I would hope these could be resolved. Now on to the more bothersome issue. Wireless speed is poor. I replaced a WRT160NL router with this one. On my old router using WPA2-Personal (AES) I would see speeds of ~300 Mbps. On my EA6500, I see 120 Mbps. I have checked and double checked all wireless and security settings and don't see anything that looks wrong.
Anyone else see this? Any ideas how to resolve?
    Thanks,
    garrman

    Hi Jibjib,
To say I have cascaded the EA6500 into another router would be inaccurate. I have the VDSL line coming into a 2Wire gateway. I decided not to use the wireless built into the 2Wire because it is wireless G only. The 2Wire gateway is handling the DHCP function. I have disabled the DHCP in the EA6500 so it acts like a switch for wired connections and a wireless access point.
Here is a link to my set up http://www.sbbala.com/uverse/  I used methos 2.
As mentioned above, I had a WRT160NL set up in the exact same configuration and it worked great delivering ~300 Mbps to the next room.
I'm not using the EA6500 in bridge mode as that's not what I am looking to do.
I don't think you would call what I'm doing LAN to LAN. I'm not creating a separate wireless network but rather a wireless access point.
The only changes I made from the stock configuration is to set the EA6500 ip address to 192.168.1.252, renamed both the 2.4 and 5.0 GHz wireless bands and apply WPA2 security. Lastly, I disabled DHCP on the EA6500.
Not sure why this would work on a WRT160NL and not on the EA6500.
Open the first link provided by jlbjlb or click List of common issues with Linksys Wi-Fi and Smart Wi-Fi Routers. I am sure that with that particular link, you can find the information and or suggestions helpful in resolving the type of issue you are having with the router.

  • SRP527W wireless speeds--repeat submission from Dec.

Bought the 527W in December, haven't been able to get a connection faster than 54Mbps even once.  Andy Hickman saw to it I had access to the 1.01.19 Firmware release which appears to have solved the random 'no connection to my WAN' issue which so many others had also noted (thanks, Andy!), but absolutely no help with wireless speeds.
Scenario details available (I'll spare you the detail repeats), but suffice it so say that, even with a new 300Mbps-rated device in the same room as the router, less than 6 ft away with line-of-sight between the 2 devices, best speed is 54Mbps.  Standard channel, wide channel, pick your frequency or advanced settings, I've been through the range.  And gotten nowhere.  If there's a trick to getting this thing working as the documents lay out, I haven't found it.
If others haven't had difficulties running in Multimode with 802.11b/g/n devices and it all works, then I'd guess I'm looking at a replacement.  And since I originally identified the problem shortly after starting it up in the first place, it'd be a Cisco warranty job, no?
    Any inputs/guidance/prayers gratefully accepted.

I have 3 PCs in the house:  2 tower units and 1 laptop.  The 'main' PC (mine) uses ethernet cabling to the router, and the 2nd PC and laptop both use wireless.  There are other devices as well, all cabled, but there are no issues with them.  The laptop's internal wireless adapter is limited to 54Mbps by design, where the 2nd PC's internal PCI wireless NIC is 'N' capable (Netgear model WG311T).  I know that it is functional at that speed and in it's present location because I was using it to connect to my previous router, a Netgear model, for over 3 years.  There were issues with DHCP and 'whois?' reporting with that router, so I replaced it.  I bought the Cisco because I wanted something a bit more advanced, to allow for service expansion to my home network in the future, as I progressed in my Cisco certification.  I hold CCENT now, I'm well progressed in my ICND2 studies, and I am the sole network admin in a classified UK miltary program (aspects of CCNP or above in the design I inherited.)  The Cisco router sits in the same location as the previous Netgear device did.
Since I have 1 device which cannot connect at 'N' speeds, I have to run in Mixed Mode.  But for troubleshooting I ignored that, and have attempted to force the 2nd PC to connect at 'N' speeds by limiting to only that connection type, but no joy.  I have made adjustments to thresholds, frequencies, etc., under the Advanced Settings for the wireless, and all with the same effect:  if I try to force 'N' settings to other than defaults, in Mixed Mode or 'N' only, nothing connects at all.
The PCI card was in an XP machine when I bought the Cisco router, but is now in a Win7 machine (replaced the PC for his 16th birthday.)  New OS, new drivers, same problem.  So, assuming there's some compatibility issue between the NIC and the router, I bought a new 300Mbps-capable USB wireless adapter.  For testing, I tried it with the laptop.  Sitting in the same room as the router with no obstacles but air between them, this new adapter can't connect any faster than 54Mbps either (but it sees other networks in my neighborhood than I knew were there to begin with, I must say!!)
So: 2 different adapters, 2 different OS versions, 3 different PCs in multiple locations around the house, and 1 constant--the router.  Any advice?  I'm going to reset the router to factory default today to see if that does any good, but I'm not confident.
    Thoughts?

  • WRT600N slow wireless speeds

I have a WRT600N router.  I have one PC that is connected to the router via a wired connection.  I also have an iPad (3rd generation) that is connected to the router via a wireless connection. On my PC, I went to speedtest.net and determined that I am receiving like 20MB downloads via the wired connection.  However, my iPad only gets approximately less than 2 MB download speeds.  I have tried reseting the router and I do have what I believe to be the latest firmware update (Firmware Version: 1.01.36 build 4).     I also receive the slow download speeds when I try connecting the other wireless devices.  I assume my problem has to do with some sort of configuration setting found in the router configuration page (http://192.168.1.1/).  Can anyone please advise me what to do?  The router is only a few feet away from my iPad so the signal strength is strong.  I just don't understand why I'm receiving such slow wireless download speeds.

This suggestion did not work.  I tried to isolate the problem by optimizing the router's wireless settings. I used the 2.4GHz, set the radio band to standard 20Mhz then set the standard channel to 9. The laptop had the same slow wireless speeds as the iPad did.
This may be due to the IPv6 feature on your computer. One of the solutions may be disabling IPv6. If the issue still exist after performing this step and download speed is fine when connected straight to the modem then reset reconfigure could work, just use WPA2 for the security with AES and a fixed channel for wireless.

  • Another Yosemite speed issue

This is yet another Yosemite speed issue. I've done some reading around and read the FileVault can cause an issues, I took a look and I've always have FileVault disabled.  I installed EtreCheck and the results came up with a lot of RED and "FAILED". Unfortunately, I have no clue how to being to read this and was hoping someone could shed some light onto this for me.

    Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash.  Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder.  Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space.  If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application.  In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder.  You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder.  You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder.  Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item.  Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder.  Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences.  Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab.  Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS.  Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term.  Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default.  You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, EasyFind, instead.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder.  Usually with the same name as the program or the developer.  The item generally has a ".pkg" extension.  Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.
There are many utilities that can uninstall applications.  Here is a selection:
        1. AppZapper
        2. AppDelete
        3. Automaton
        4. Hazel
        5. AppCleaner
        6. CleanApp
        7. iTrash
        8. Amnesia
        9. Uninstaller
      10. Spring Cleaning

  • VPN Speed Issue

    Hi all,
I am having a VPN speed issue. When I am using the internet and not connected to the VPN, I experience speeds of 25mbps/25, which is what my contract with Verizon calls for. When I connect to the VPN with my laptop, speeds drop to about 3/2 mbps. (I am connected via Ethernet hardwire not wireless)
I ran Ethernet wire to the Verizon box and then had Verizon activate. Unfortunately this did not solve my problem. Internet is fine until I connect to the VPN.
I also was able to conduct a test: I connected wireless to an open local network while in the office and then to my work server via the VPN with no noticeable speed issues. This leads me to believe the issue lies with the Actiontec router issued from Verizon?
I only work remotely 1x per week so have been hobbling along with this problem for the past 3 months since our switch from Comcast. (Speed was fine with Comcast ) It is painful as it causes a 5-10 second lag for each click when navigating folders on the remote server. This means it can take me 5 minutes to pull down one PDF file.
Is there a suggested solution for this - should I buy another router?
    thanks,
    Steve

No, usually, you dont have to wait. You do have to log into the router and go in and release the IP, but most of the time this is all you have to do.
Once in a while it wont release properly, in which case you do have to wait a couple of hours. But most of the time it will release just fine.

  • Homw Hub 1` broadband speed issues

My current wireless speeds are download 450kbps, upload 250kpbs.
I am expecting speeds far greater than this.  Should be getting download speeds up to 5mb.  Is this down to the home hub 1 or other issues??
    Any help greatly appreciated

can you post the adsl stats from your router may need to show detail to get all stats (if hub enter 192.168.1.254 in your browser and navigate to adsl or use a-z) and run btspeedtester http://speedtester.bt.com and post the results. Someone may then be able to offer assistance

  • BT Inifinity Speed issue

    Hi BT,
I have been raising this issue and seems no one is willing to help...so not sure i will get help here either!
I have BT Infinity Option 2 with speed upto 80mb. However, I only get 20mb if am lucky..otherwise is below that. I have continously highlighted this to BT but no one seems to care. See examples 7th May and 12th May
I am thinking of leaving very soon...i can be paying for services i don't receive...£50 per month is a lot of money for very very poor services
    Please can you help?
Let me know the details you require
    Thanks,

Your IP profile is very good so there is not a problem with DLM slowing you down.
If it is only wireless speeds that are the problem the first thing to try is turning off "Smart Set Up" on the Homehub
See link how to do that.

  • Network speed issues with TC

I have a couple gig of music in apple lossless format that I moved to shared drive on TC. The task took 20 hours for 4 gig. How can I speed up this network? If I burn a CD directly to the TC it is taking almost a hour per CD. I have an imac, mac mini, a mac notebook on the network plus a toshiba notebook and two squeeze boxes. Any advice? I figure with the toshiba off everything should be n speed.

I'm having similar issues. For months now, I have had super fast wireless speeds! 6, 7 + Meg per second. Now, suddenly, I'm barely getting 2 or 3. I thought, it might have been my ISP, so I tested my desktop, it was still getting info at speeds around 10 Meg. So then I checked out the trouble shooting guide in the users manual. It had a ton of suggestions on where to place the time capsule for optimum performance. I thought, well it always worked fine here before, but for arguments sake I'll try it. So I moved the time capsule to a location that was much more ideal according to the users manual, and... nothing... still 2 Meg speeds. It's really ******* me off, because when I go to purchase or rent a movie on my AppleTV it takes FOREVER to download, and sometimes I'll start a movie, and it stops half way through because my playback has caught up to the end of the download. This NEVER happened before, so if anyone has any suggestions... please help.
