TCP/IP printing on Tiger 10.4.11 stopped working

Shortly after a batch of updates via Software Updates it was discovered that a G4 iBook running 10.4.11 was no longer able to print to any TCP/IP printers. Attempts with printing results in error messages like "Printer busy; retry in 30 seconds", or the print job simply disappearing from the printer queue.
The printers (Canon MX700 and Samsung ML-2510 via Ethernet->USB adaptor) have been printing to these and older printers since the first day the iBook was bought from the Apple store. Deletions and additions of the printers in the Print & Fax section of System Preferences has not fixed the problem.
We even re-installed Tiger twice with the first install "Archive & Install" and the second one "Erase & Install" with the "zero erase" option. The problem still exists.
Any guesses as to the fix or possible workarounds are greatly appreciated.

Hello and welcome to Apple Discussions.
The error message could indicate that the Mac and the printers are no longer configured on the same IP subnet. The subnet is determined by the subnet mask. With a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0, the first three sets of numbers in the IP address is the subnet. The last number is the network address. For example, an IP address of 10.0.1.5 has a subnet of 10.0.1 and a network address of 5. For the Mac and the printer to be able to communicate with each other, the subnet needs to be the same for both devices.
If the IP subnet is correctly configured for all devices then you can use the Ping facility within Network Utility to check there is path from the Mac to the printers. With Ping selected, enter the IP address of the MX700 and set the number of Pings to 4. Then press the Ping button and see if you get a reply, something similar to the following...
Ping has started...
PING 10.0.1.5 (10.0.1.5): 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 10.0.1.5: icmp_seq=0 ttl=64 time=0.410 ms
64 bybes from 10.0.1.5: icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=0.323 ms
64 bytes from 10.0.1.5: icmp_seq=2 ttl=64 time=0.363 ms
64 bytes from 10.0.1.5: icmp_seq=3 ttl=64 time=0.315 ms
If you don't get a response from either printer then it is likely that your network port is faulty on the Mac. If you do get a response from either printer then you could look at adding the printer queues again. Note that for the Canon, you will need to have the Canon IJ Network Utility installed and running. To then add the printer, you need to select More Printers > Canon IJ Network.

  • Printing to Video deteriorates and finally stops working

    I've been experiencing problems with Print to Video & Edit to Tape over the past two weeks and now it has stopped working altogether. The Deck is a Panasonic DVCPro AJ-D455p. Log & Capture works fine. Edit to Tape was the first thing that stopped working. then Print to Video would send the audio but no video, then it wouldn't work at all so we were playing content directly from the timeline and recording manually. Now we can't even do this. I'm trying to identify if this is a hardware or software issue. (the deck plays fine to the monitor) Any ideas? (At first powering down the deck, restarting FCP seemed to help. no longer.) I've also checked and rechecked the A/V settings for output, refreshed the deck through FCP etc...nothing helps on the settings side of things.
    PowerPC G4   Mac OS X (10.4.2)   FCP studio 5.0

    A strange and bizzare series of events has left me baffled re: FCP. About a month ago communication with the Panasonic AJ-D455 began to deteriorate. I was not able to edit to tape, then could not print to vid, so was posting to tape playing off the timeline. Log and Capture worked fine. My external monitor would not mirror the desktop no matter what my AV settings were. Then Log & Capture stopped working. I've run FCP rescue, I've trashed preferences, I've checked the FireWire, I've checked the deck. I've reformated the entire computer, reinstalled FCP...still no luck.
    Other random facts. After I trashed the preferences, the system worked normally for about 30 minutes. After I reinstalled FCP the system worked fine for 1/2 day.
    Any suggestions on what to do, look for, next?
    Also, the deck works flawlessly with another machine. The FW cable is also fine.
    Not sure what to isolate next...

  • Print driver host for 32bit applications - Stopped working

    Hey everyone, when I print to the Adobe PDF Converter print driver it will become unresponsive.  It might work for 4 or 5 print jobs and the crash.  This happens when printing from Illustrator CS5.5, IE9 and Visio 2010.
    What normally happens is I will choose "print" then select "Adobe PDF" as the printer, the print progress bar comes up but not the explorer window where I choose to save the PDF.  The Illustrator/IE/Visio crashes.
    The only way to be able to print again is to logout and log back in to the machine.  I've read some others re-starting the splwow64.exe but I haven't tried that.
    I'm running a Windows7 Pro, 64-bit, SP1.  Adobe Design Premium CS5.5, Acrobat X Pro.  Everything is updated to the latest version.

  • Printing PDF through 32 Bit PC stopped working

    We have 2 different applications one using the WIN32API call and the other one using .Net Process to print the PDF document without opening.  This functionality was working until 3 -5 weeks back in production.  Now we are unable to print with the existing functionality.  Yesterday we come across the same code is working fine when we make a request from 64 bit pc's.  This is strange and I'm not sure whether this is a problem with Adobe or Microsoft.  FYI, 4 days back the all of the sudden it started printing just for a day and it stopped again the next day onwards.
    Here's the code we have been using from 2 different applications,
    ll_rc = ShellExecuteW ( handle( this ), "PRINT", is_doc_path + ls_full_file_name, ls_Null, ls_Null, 1)
    and here is the function definition for the above:
                    FUNCTION long ShellExecuteW  (long as_hwnd, string as_lpOperation, string as_lpFile, string as_lpParameters,  string as_lpDirectory, integer ai_nShowCmd ) LIBRARY "shell32"
    In .NET, we are using PDFSharp to print.
    Process printJob = new Process();
           printJob.StartInfo.CreateNoWindow = true;
         printJob.StartInfo.Verb = "print";
         printJob.StartInfo.WindowStyle = ProcessWindowStyle.Hidden;
         printJob.StartInfo.FileName = concatenatedFileName;
         printJob.StartInfo.Arguments = '\\' + prntDialog.PrinterSettings.PrinterName.ToString() + '\\';
         printJob.Start();
         printJob.WaitForExit(5000);

  • Can I print to an OS-Classic compatible printer using Tiger?

    My husband works in an office that recently brought in a Sharp DM-4551 copier/printer. He takes our Powerbook G4 running Tiger to work and so far hasn't been able to find a way to print. The only drivers we can find online are for Windows or OS Classic.
    I did download the OS Classic driver, and even installed the OS Classic environment in hopes of then installing the driver. If I'm able to complete the installation, is it possible to then print from OS X applications? Or will it only be possible to print from OS Classic applications?
    On a side note, I have been stalled in my installation of the OS Classic driver. The Classic environment seems to work just fine. The driver and all its documentation is in a folder on my desktop. When I open it and run the installer, a box pops up asking me to insert the installation disk. There is no disk, but all that would be on a disk is in that folder on my desktop. I can't figure out how to tell the installer to look at the desktop folder instead of looking for a disk. It won't continue the installation without insertion of a disk. I tried burning the install folder onto a CD and inserting the CD when the installer asked for a disk, but somehow it guessed that this was not the original installation disk, and wouldn't take it.
    This is really obnoxious to not be able to print from Tiger to this Sharp DM-4551. Please, please please, is anyone who can help??! We would be so grateful to get this issue fixed!!

    Okay so I downloaded Gimp Print (now called GutenPrint) and installed the latest version. I even found the Sharp DM-4551 in the list of printers when I went to set up the driver. The hangup is now in filling in the appropirate information. What I mean is that when I set up the printer driver using GutenPrint, I'm asked for protocol, IP address and Queue name. For protocol, I chose IP, as stated in the GutenPrint directions. The IP address I obtained from another user in the office who prints to the DM-4551 with her Dell with no problems. I'm stuck on Queue, though, and can't get any further without knowing what goes in that blank. I've tried leaving it blank, and entering "lp" as instructed in the GutenPrint documentation. When I try to print, it says it's connecting and then never can connect to the printer. It finally just times out. Where do I find what to enter for "queue"?

  • TCP/IP Printer ports - HELP PLEASE

    I have a large inkjet printer that I print my graphic design to... for years it has been set up and printing just fine through an Actiontec M1424-WR-rev.D router. No setting were ever changed in the router, it just worked great right out of the box (the Verizon guys installed it). I had a small router with the cable company, but when I got the new router from Verozon the install guy said i didn't need it any more, and moved the ethernet plugs over to the new router. Everything worked fine for years... until the wireless functions started to fail (I don't use the wireless for the office, just the family), so, Verizon told me I had to replace it with a new M1242WR - rev. I router. I transfered all the cables over the the new router in exactly the same positions the were in on the old router. Now my printing software (RIP software) can't see the printer when it's routed through the FiOS router, but If I move the ethernet cable from the router and plug it into the back of my computer, which disconnects my computer from the network and gives me a dedicated ethernet connection to the printer... everything works fine. It's just when I try and run it through the router that my computer and printer can't talk to each other.
    My RIP software that drives the printer demands a STATIC IP address set up in a TCP/IP printing port, and the printer is set up with the corresponding static IP address (this is unavoidable). Images of the setup screens below...
    The RIP software setup is here... very simple:
    Now, on the actual printer, the IP address matches (192.168.0.110), the subnet masks are 255.255.255.0, and the default gateway is set at 192-168.0.1.
    This is all the info I have, and all I know is that it worked fine with no setup on the old router, and does NOT work on the new router... it used to be plug-n-play, now it's plug-n-stop.
    Again, when the ethernet cable run directly from the computer it drives the printer just fine, connected to the router first and it failes completely.... HELP!!!!!!!!!!
    Like I said... this has worked great for years, I haven't changed a thing on the printer or computer... the only change is the new router... I'm out of production until I figure this out (
    Cabe...

    The revision I router out of the box uses the following default IP addresses
    192.168.1.x IP Address
    255.255.255.0 Subnet
    192.168.1.1 Default gateway
    I notice you aren't using that IP Address scheme at all in the screen shots.  Did you change the Verizon router internal settings to use the 0.1 ip scheme?

  • How to install a tcp/ip printer

    How can I install a tcp/ip printer on my powerbook G4

    What is the make/model of this printer? Does it have a built in ethernet print server?
    In general terms - you open the Printer Setup Utility, click to Add a new printer, select "IP Printing", select the type of IP Printing protocol you want to use, enter the IP address of the print server, and then select the printer driver.

  • How to delete unwanted TCP/IP Printer Ports

    Windows 7 64bit; I have created, in error, one TCP/IP Printer Port which I would like to delete to keep the Ports clean of rubish, but I am unable to find how to do so.
    Can anyone help?
    Nevio

    You get the 'port is in use' error message if the port is currently assigned to a printer. It has nothing to do with print spooler - it's just that you can't delete a port that is already assigned to a printer.
    1. When you open properties and go to the 'Ports' tab, you have your printers listed with headings - Port, Description, Printer.
    2. Identify the printer using the port that you want to delete, exit out of printer properties window and delete the printer.
    3. Right Click on any of the remaining listed printers and select 'Properties' (if there is none left then you craft create a fake printer).
    4. Click the Ports tab.
    5. Select the port and click “Delete port".
    6. Check any available port and exit out of 'properties' window.
    The above will work in many cases but unfortunately not all. You may well find one of a couple of problems. One symptom is that having removed printer(s) and exited from "Devices and Printers" - if you re-enter "Devices
    and Printers"  the printers have returned. Another symptom is that  Windows will not let you delete the port as described above.
    There are three things I have encountered which can need fixing. One is that there are print jobs queued on the printer. If this job can be cancelled that fixes that, otherwise stop and re-start
    the print spooler. the third is the "in use" message mentioned below.
    The second situation is that a program - in my case foxit reader - is somehow associated with the printer you are trying to remove when you look through the full list of Ports. I had to un-install
    Foxit and only re-install it after the printer situation was resolved.
    Thirdly you may have to go into "Programs and Features" and un-install the software associated with the printer.

  • EA6300 - Windows TCP/IP Printing Using LPR Protocol to USB ??

    I am in process of replacing an old Zyxel router with (probably) an EA6300 (depending on the answer to this post...)
    Currently I have a Dymo USB label printer connected to the Zyxel's USB port, and my Windows 7 clients are set up to print to that device using the LPR protocol through a Windows TCP/IP print port connected to 192.168.1.1 (the IP address of the Zyxel).
    So my question is whether the EA6300 will work in the same way?

    Hi Andrew! Yes the VUSB software must be installed on your Windows 7 computer for it to be able to see the printer that will be connected to the USB port of the EA6300 and be able to print . Here's more information about the EA6300, http://kb.linksys.com/Linksys/ukp.aspx?vw=1&docid=7e5454f239a946599bd151dccb031a57_Getting_to_know_t...

  • Create TCP/IP Printing Port for OfficeJet Pro 8600

    I need to print across a hardware firewall (from wireless to wired networks, different subnet), so I need to create a standard TCP/IP printing port in Windows 7.  Does the printer use RAW on TCP port 9100 or are there other settings I need to configure?
    Thanks.

    Hello,
    I see that you're having an issue with the printer not being able to print over a firewall.
    I believe the easiest way to do this would be to unblock the ports rather than adding a printer through windows.
    Router settings for HP Printers
    Router should be broadcasting in “G Mode only”. This normally means turning “Mixed mode” off.
    For Dual Band Routers, make sure they have disabled the 5ghz band and should only be operating on 2.4ghz
    Mac filtering should be disabled
    Security type should be “WPA 2 Personal”
    On some routers they have a “hardware firewall”, so the below ports would need to be opened
    UDP- 5353 67 80 547 53 5222 5223 5355 137 138 139 443 427 161 514 3702 5357 445 3910 Port range: 9999 - 65535

  • Airport Extreme and TCP/IP Printer

    I have a tcp/ip printer used by PCs and Macs in a satellite office. We need iPad's and iPhones to be able to print to it as well...
    It is NOT an airport or apple ready printer. It is an older high-capacity Minolta. I print from Mac's using the generic pcl driver.
    I am looking at the xPrinterServer from LanTronix but was curious of the Airport Extreme will work for this or does it only support printers that are already Apple ready?
    Network configuration:
    Wireless Router/Switch

    Printer
    Basically, I would be adding the airport as a bridge device/same LAN - as the current router/switch.
    Based on what I read, it does not seem to support non-airport ready printers.
    Thanks.

    Thanks.. I chatted with apple about it. I suppose, being more specific, I meant an AirPrint printer...
    I am going to try to Lantronix device, which is supposed to allow you to print to non-airprint printers with IOS devices.

  • Issues adding TCP/IP Printer with Group Policy

    I have been trying to add a TCP/IP Printer using group policy, User Preferences. I can add a HP Laserjet 4600 Printer but I'm not able to add the second printer a Canon iRC4580. It keeps coming up with issues stating "The object selected does not match

  • Network shared printers stop working; default printer changes

    Hello,
    Have an odd printing issue that seems to be ongoing and am trying to come up with a good solution or fix for it.
    We have an environment that has a Windows 2012R2 Print Server, that is sharing various printers which are also set to List in Directory.  Some of the printers are HP and are using the HP Universal driver which shows as "True" for Packaged in
    the print management window, and some of the printers are Canon which are using device specific drivers and show as "False" for Packaged.  My understanding is that the packaged attribute simply indicates that Point and Print can then download
    the driver and install/use it without any security prompts whereas if it is not Packaged, then the driver must be installed on the local server/workstation by an Administrator.  We have Group Policy defined such that all Point and Print restrictions are
    Disabled.
    We then have multiple Remote Desktop Session Hosts based on Server 2008R2 (x64).  Users connect to these hosts via thin clients (Wyse) and there is a domain login script using KiXtart that creates printer connections to the shared printers using an address
    of \\printserver\printername.  We also set the default printer via the login script each time depending on user's group membership.
    Each part of this setup is on it's own routed VLAN subnet, so the Print Server is on 192.168.0.x/24, RDSHs are on 192.168.1.x/24 and the printers themselves are on 192.168.2.x/24.  There is no firewall or other restrictions between the subnets, all traffic
    is allowed to flow.
    The issue we are having is two parts, the first is the larger issue, but both are a pain:
    1) Randomly (no discernible pattern/reason/timeframe), some Canon printers will stop appearing in Print dialog boxes from applications when a user tries to print.  It only seems to happen on the Canon printers.  The printer will still show in Control
    Panel -> Devices and Printers, but when you right click it and try to go to Printer Properties or view any of the printer settings, you'll get an error saying the printer is not accessible/valid.  I have also tried a WMI query for "select * from
    win32_printer" and the printer will not be returned.  To temporarily fix it, we right click the printer, and choose to remove it and then go through the wizard to re-add the same printer from the directory again.  That will correct it and the
    user can print again, view all properties, etc.  This doesn't happen to every user but happens sporadically and once it happens to a user it seems to pop up once every week or two.
    Now, we have made a change and installed the Canon printers in question locally on the Remote Desktop Session Hosts themselves using TCP/IP ports so that each user logging into the session host will see all of the printers.  This also seems to have resolved
    this issue.  So it leads me to think there is some sort of timeout or connection getting dropped, but for no real apparent reason.  This is all on a virtualized platform and so the Print Server and Session Hosts have very reliable LAN connections
    amongst themselves.  And further, we never see the issue with the HP printers, they seem to maintain their stability at all times.
    2) The other issue we are seeing is that from time to time the default printer setting changes or vanishes altogether.  It doesn't happen to every user but once it does happen it happens regularly (multiple times a day).  This happens even when using
    the locally mapped TCP/IP printer or when using the network print server.  From what I have read and found, this generally seems to be a known issue regarding redirected client printers and some GP settings related thereto.  But we aren't redirecting
    any local client printers, everything is network based/shared.
    In digging into these two issues I have run across the following error we get regularly in the PrintService Event Viewer log:
    The print spooler failed to import the printer driver that was downloaded from \\printserver\print$\x64\PCC\ntprint.inf_amd64_59246c3ac1bd3f2a.cab into the driver store for driver Microsoft enhanced Point and Print compatibility driver. Error code= 800f024b.
    This can occur if there is a problem with the driver or the digital signature of the driver.
    And digging further into that seems to be that their was an error validating one of the DLL files as seen at the following thread:  http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/9fe186e4-52f7-4552-a223-b2320cfc9ed5/driver-install-semi-fails-with-800f024b?forum=winserverprint
    We get the exact same error that is shown there UNISRV.DLL being flagged as invalid, and have applied the hotfix indicated in KB2701894.
    I am not sure the above error is realted to the issues at hand, but figured it is a good starting point to eliminate it as a potential cause of the issue.
    Any input or suggestions on what to do to diagnose or further resolve this would be greatly appreciated!

    Alan, I'm getting this error 600 in my company. Is there any fix for this problem?
    After installing KB2919355 on Windows 2012 R2, when I try to map a shared printer I receive the following error message: A policy is in effect on your computer which prevents you from connecting to this print queue. Please contact your system administrator.
    If I uninstall the patch the shared printer maps correctly.
    I also notice that if I copy the driver \\server\print$\x64\PCC\ntprint.inf_amd64_a7ac65d1b7714fb1.cab
    from a Windows 2012 R2 before applying KB2919355 to the server that has the patch applyed (and rename it), I can map the printer.
    Does anyone know if there is a fix for that?
