TCP/IP settings for airport card

ok, first off...please take it easy on me...i'm a windows guy but am close to purchasing a mac for my girlfriend and also have an iPhone so please understand that i love macs, just don't know too much about them..yet
i have a need to set TCP/IP settings for an airport card when the mac connects to a specific SSID (Peanut Gang). the problem is due to the fact that when macs connect to a linksys WRE54G wireless repeater, they do not obtain the TCP/IP info. you can go into system prefs -> network and renew the lease and it obtains the info but i've been asked to "automate" this process.
ok, i'm not sure if it's possible but when i saw the "automator" section here i thought i would ask. i know how i could do it through scripting on a windows machine but i digress, ha!
thanks

You may want to ask this over in the "Networking" group.
Also clarify whether you're having these issues with a mac you have, or just what.
Might want to specify what kind of mac is having this problem, too.
And be ready to explain just what you're asking when you say:"need to set TCP/IP settings for an airport card when the mac connects to a specific SSID"
There are some pretty good blokes in that discussion group.
welcome

  • Missing TCP/IP settings for iPhone tethering (Bluetooth and USB)

Is it just me or Apple has completely disabled the TCP/IP settings for BT and USB connections for iPhone tethering (and possibly any other mobile devices)?
I can now only set the IP addresses and DNS server. No Proxies or WINS settings tabs.
I have also noticed that if you setup a USB tethering connection in Leopard and upgrade to Snow Leopard, the settings are still available, but NOT if you make a clean install of Snow Leopard and create a new iPhone USB tethering connection.
I always use a SOCKS5 when I'm using my tethering connection for security and better/faster connection with my manual proxy server setup. I find the new "options" in SL very limited, not only for my usage.

I got this to work again (in fact, I'm tethered right now
Here are the steps I followed:
    1) Upgraded to iTunes 9
    2) Upgraded iPhone to OS 3.1
    3) Removed device from Bluetooth Devices list on my MBP
    4) Removed Bluetooth PAN from Network preferences
    5) Restarted iPhone and MBP
    6) Set-up iPhone as a Bluetooth Device on MBP
    7) Enabled tethering on iPhone
    8) Connected to iPhone network via the Bluetooth icon on my MBP menu bar
    9) Verified that the blue "Internet Tethering" bar was on the iPhone
    10) Manually added Bluetooth PAN to my MBP network preferences (connect show as yellow, "IP cannot be assigned" message)
    11) Opened the Advanced pane and clicked the "Renew DHCP Lease" button
    12) IP was assigned!
I'm not sure if the first two steps contributed to the solution or not, but these are the steps that worked for me.
    Good luck to you all...

  • G4 support for Airport Card alternative?

    Hi all,
It never dawned on me that there is an alternative to Apple's Airport cards for our systems until recently. I have a G4 dual 1GHz system which houses a hookup for the original airport card; the system also has PCI slots. I have an Airport Extreme Base station and would like to restrict my frequency range to the 5 GHz ONLY (to avoid the crowding of 2.4 GHz range.) So, is it correct to say that my G4 is not tied down to the original airport card but can theoretically use "n" capable WIFI cards via on board PCI or USB? And if so, any you would recommend? Also, how's the software support for it, i.e., drivers, Airport Utility, etc. since the card would be third party and not Apples? Would I get the support from say, Airport Utility as if I had an Apple airport card in there or are there going to be compatibility issues? Many thanks!

OK, I just found this out:
    http://www.beowulf.org/archive/2001-July/004174.html
    32 bits/33 Mhz : aggregated ideal peak at 132 MB/s
    64 bits/33 Mhz : aggregated ideal peak at 264 MB/s
And that's shared between all items on the PCI bus.
It would be interesting to measure the bandwidth on the USB 2 PCI card. I've seen it vary wildly on a G4/400 Mhz Yikes, sometimes dropping to as little as USB 1.1 even with only one USB item connected on an IOGear card. I no longer have access to that machine. That's of course assuming nothing else is sharing the same bus.

  • Optimum settings for airport extreme base

I have a relatively new Airport extreme base station that I got this year. And, two new 15" Macbook pro's.
There are lots of options in the set up of the airport. Had anyone determined what some optimum settings might be to maximize speed.
I do know one hint.... use iStumbler to find an inactive channel and set that up as the channel that you use.
    Any other tips?

    Welcome to the discussions!
iStumbler will not work with Snow Leopard, so try Air Radar. It's not free, but you can use if for a few weeks at no charge. You want to set your channel as far away as possible from any other channels that you see. The "Automatic" setting on your AEBS is supposed to do this for you, but it's a changing target as the other routers in the neighborhood will be doing the same thing. The "right" channel on Tuesday may not be the right channel on Friday if you try to set the channel manually. It will take some experimentation.
    http://www.koingosw.com/products/airradar.php
The optimum settings to maximize speed may curiously not be the best settings to use on your network if a sacrifice must be made to give up bandwidth. In this regard, there is no way to predict in advance whether the highly advertised 5 GHz will perform better than the more standard 802.11n at 2.4 GHz.
The reason for this (and what the ads don't tell you) is that higher frequency 5 GHz signals are absorbed by walls, ceilings and any obstructions much more quickly than 2.4 GHz signals. So, in return for speed, you give up penetration power. For many users 5 Ghz does not perform nearly as well as 2.4 GHz a few rooms down the hall or on the upper floor.
You will need to experiment to find the best compromise in settings for your own installation.

  • Looking for airport card

    Hello,
I have a Harpertown Mac Pro and wanted to know why there are discrepancies between the airport cards for the 2006 and 2008 mac pros? I was on ebay and I found a slew of airport cards, but they are saying that they will only work in 2006 mac pros and not 2008 mac pros. What gives? The card looks the same, and fits exactly the same. So, why wouldn't it work in 2008 mac pros?
    confused.

What you need (that would be an Apple product) has the model number: MB363Z/A. This is for the "Mac Pro Early 2008."

  • How to install the driver for Airport card in a mini

In a post regarding trouble with wireless connections some suggested...
    cd /System/Library/Extensions
    mv IO80211Family.kext IO8021Family.1066
well I did it and now my system is telling me there is no Airport card installed. How can I reload just the Airport drivers? I have my 10.6.3 OS X disk. Can I do it with that?
I tried running Disk Permissions with no change. I have since renamed the file back to what it was. The I started getting pop ups telling me the kernel file was improperly installed.
I just don't want to reinstall my complete OS.

I've already put it back to the original file name of IO80211Family.kext. I've run disk permissions too, in fact I've run it several times.
It keeps repairing a bunch of java stuff but that's all.
I've set the permission on the file to what I believe they were before I ran the mv command.
It was after I restored the file name, that I got the popup saying it was installed incorrectly, but, it's not saying it now.
And I have rebooted too, still no Airport.
Oh, I never replaced anything with earlier version, I just renamed and renamed back.

  • Best settings for Airport extreme

I have grande internet service - fiber optic to the house. What are the best settings for my AEBS? When I connect directly - bypassing the AEBS - I get much much faster internet service. What are the best settings? Thanks

I've read that the APE can deliver up to 600 Mbps from its WAN port to a LAN port, so unless your access is really fast it should do.
Does this speed problem only occur when you connect wirelessly?

  • Settings for Airport Utility / Airport Express

I have an Airport Express. The idea behind it is, I want to be able to take it to any hotel or location that ONLY has wired internet, and create a WiFi hotspot for my iPad.
Right now I have it set up working on my home network, but I want to make sure the settings are correct so that I could...say...take it to the Ramada Inn that only (in this example) has wired ethernet internet and plug it in, and turn the connection into a WiFi network.
What settings do I need to put in specifically for that purpose?
I'm going to Germany and I want to make sure it works before I leave.

Impossible to say for certain. The same settings used with your existing internet service provider and modem may work, or different settings may be required. An Airport Express can save 5 different wi-fi network settings which can be named for each network.
I don't travel anymore, but when I did I took my Apple PowerBook at the time with me along with my Airport Express to create a new wireless network with my AE if needed for a hotel's modem available in my room. This can't be done with an iPad.

  • DNS settings for Airport Extreme Base Station

This month's MacWorld suggests that changing the DNS setting of the wireless device might increase the speed of the connection. What setting should my Airport Extreme Base Station use.
The Computer system says 10.0.1.1 and it works. When I entered the numbers they suggested I get no connection.
    Any suggestions?

To change DNS setup on the Airport you need to put in the DNS change on the Internet tab. The Airport will always place itself as the main DNS server to the network clients that connect by DHCP, unless you set the Airport to static IP.. and it will use your ISP DNS server by default.. you can change them if you want. Just type in the new DNS you want to use.
This month's MacWorld suggests that changing the DNS setting of the wireless device might increase the speed of the connection.
    http://www.macworld.com/article/2824564/slow-internet-edit-your-dns-settings.htm l
In most cases this is really so minimal as to be insignificant. The airport should cache the regularly used DNS addresses and you can test it by ping to your local DNS or the DNS recommended by MacWorld??.. but honestly a few ms is not going to change the world. To the clients the local network addressing should be still using the Airport as the main DNS.. you can setup manually in each device a different DNS but that can give local network issues as it then has to find local clients by broadcast.
I have a complex dns setup for other reasons.. getting past geolocks..
If I ping my local ISP dns I get
    ping 202.76.170.228
    PING 202.76.170.228 (202.76.170.228): 56 data bytes

    64 bytes from 208.122.23.22: icmp_seq=5 ttl=51 time=186.967 ms
It is very obvious the best ping is the ISP dns because the route path is shorter..
Google is very good but still takes longer and of course dns in another country is much worse.

  • Custom TCP/IP Settings for different network connections

I have about 4-5 different networks I hop onto all the time.
The problem is my brother will NOT use Auto-configure using DHCP. So, I have to get the settings and put them in everytime, with his static IP, gateway, DNS and the such. Is there a way to save them to that specific connection and whenever my macbook pro sees HIS network will use HIS settings? I mean, it would make sense to be able to custom fit a connection just to his connection.
So, that when I am on his network I wouldn't have to retype/input his settings because the SSID tells the computer that I am on his network and to use his settings. When I am on different networks it would use the settings appropriate to that network.
I don't know if that made any sense, respond back if it didn't and I will try to clarify better.

Add a "Location" for that network configuration.
System Preferences > Network > Location > Edit Locations
Then when you want to switch to that network, click on the Apple > Locations and select the Location you set up.
I have a few locations set up this way and it works well.

  • Microcell Settings for Airport Extreme

What settings on my airport extreme should I use so my ATT microcell works consistently?

    marciafromboston nailed it.
There are no settings or adjustments to be made on the AirPort Extreme. Plug in the ATT microcell to an LAN <-> on the AirPort Extreme.
If you are having difficulties, temporarily connect a laptop to a LAN <-> port on the AirPort and turn off the wireless on the laptop. Check to make sure that you can log in to the Internet.
If your laptop connection is good...and the microcell is having issues....you have a microcell issue. I went through 3 trying to find one that might work, but no luck, so I gave up trying. AT&T finally admitted to having a "few" problems with the devices.
Hopefully, you will have better results.

  • Optimum settings for gpu card

I have a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 55 Ti card in my machine. However, the performance is less than expected. I have read that this is beacuase PS was configured to only recognise certain high end quatro cards. I found an article on how to force PS to recognise other cards but only for Premier Pro. Can some one point me to a fix for this in PS ? I did a search for a file called GPUSniifer.exe but can't see that on my system. Any help would be appreciated.
    I am running CS5...
    Regards,
    TL.

The reviewer fell into a trap, that we see often. The Creative Suite name, CS 5 in this case, applies across a fairly large band of software. He should have said "Premiere Pro CS 5."
Arond the forums, we often see posts like, "I have CS 6, and am trying to do _____... " The first question is usually "CS 6 what?" Often, one can infere that if posted to the Premiere Pro Forum, they are talking about PrPro CS 6, but it often turns out to be Photoshop, Illustrator, etc.
Now, the Open GL is part of the video handling in PS, but the CUDA core count, and capabilities, do not have any bearing, at least not yet. MPE is used to accelerate certain playback options, and also some processing options, mostly with MPEG Video.
I do not believe that PS uses CUDA for its Video, but maybe others will prove me wrong, or support that statement. I have not read of PS's use, and again, yet.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • What are the settings for airport disk

I am confused about the TC settings. It seems that there is a TC name and password, but how do I access any disks attached to TC and how do I assign the disk to different users. Whats the best way to set it up, using "Access DIsk"? And the "by Account" (what does that mean), by disk password?

do your connected disks show up in the same place as they would if you plugged them in directly?
I can only access mine through the Shared Devices dropdown menu under my time Capsule. They don't "mount" like they normally do.

According to Apple Specifications, your PB would require the original AirPort Card.
Unfortunately, Apple no longer supplies these, however, there are several vendors (Caveat Emperor) out there that still do.
A few examples, doing a Google search for "AirPort Card":
