TDM or Remote Disc?

I am installing a sample library from DVD onto my Mac Mini by using my Macbook's DVD drive over firewire / target disc mode. It's taking ages, though this is a large library. Would I be quicker doing this via Remote Disc / DVD sharing or are both methods about the same in terms of speed of transfer?

Okay thanks. It's down to a choice between firewire 400 or ethernet using a standard ethernet cable to connect the ports of both the Mini and the Macbook. The Mini has FW 800 but the Macbook only has 400. Would FW still be faster in this case?

  • INSTALLATION OF SNOW LEOPARD USING REMOTE DISC

    Hi
I have a Macbook Air circa 2009 v10.5.8 and have the installation disc for Snow Leopard which I have attempted to install via the optical drive in my Sony Vaio.  When I select Remote Disk on my Air, I can see the Snow Leopard Disc and it allows me to accept the Apple terms and proceeds to install but then seems to hang.  I then have to restart my Air by using the on/off button and have repeated the process several times to no avail.  I can see that the optical drive is working but it stops eventually presumably because it fails to connect to the Air. On the Air I receive a message to the effect that I need to run disc utility to repair a faulty disc but am unsure whether this is correct as Snow Leopard is a new disc which appears undamaged.  Any thoughts would be much appreciated.  By the way I am using the same wireless network for both computers.
    Thanks
    Neil

It would help with more information. Do both computers have Firewire ports? If so, then connect the computer without a DVD drive to the other computer using a Firewire cable. Boot the computer without a DVD drive into Target Disk Mode then after you see the TDM logo boot the other computer using the Snow Leopard DVD. You can install to the computer without a DVD drive by selecting its hard drive as the target destination.
You can only use Remote Disc if you have the software installed. If you have the software then you should find documentation along with it. You can download it from support.apple.com/downloads/.

Remote Disc Can't recognize Blank disc, but it does recognize other discs. I am trying to burn something from my itunes on my mac mini to a blank disc on my windows computer. What could be wrong?
I can see other discs such as music and stuff so I know I have installed it correctly but how come I can't see the blank disc that I need to burn?

You can't burn discs remotely, you can only read data discs remotely (i.e. you cannot play movie DVDs either).
Either copy the files to the remote computer or get an external drive.

  • ITunes import using Home Sharing and Remote Disc

I would like to import a music CD from my MacBook Pro to my MacBook Air using iTunes. I'm running the latest version of Mavericks (10.9.1) on both computers.
Here are the steps that I have followed:
Home Sharing is enabled on both computers
I load the CD into the Pro's optical drive, but tell it not to import to the Pro's library
On the Air, I select Add to Library, then select the Remote Disc
When the Pro appears, I select it
At this point, I can see that there is a disc loaded into the Pro and I select it, but the "Open" button remains grayed out
    What am I missing here?

I tried the same thing and got the same results as you. The reason the button is grayed out is that the operation is not supported directly.

  • Remote disc for Apple TV or other ways to steam DVD to Apple TV

With the new MacBook Air Apple introduce "Remote Disc" for sharing DVD/CD drives from another computer. Will this add on be added in Apple TV or how can I stream my DVD's to my Apple TV?

When Blue-Ray finally joins the free world and stops refusing to play because your entire playback path does not support end-to-end encryption as dictated by the movie companies, I will want to stick a Blue-Ray disk in a drive and watch it. And until AppleTV will do that, either on an internal drive or by network drive sharing, until it can REPLACE one or more of the boxes sitting under my TV instead of just adding another box to the mass, I really have no use for it.
don't buy it then, simple as that.

  • Can i install windows 7 via bootcamp (MB Air) while using remote disc? I put the windows 7 disk in my macbook pro drive, and connect to my brand new macbook air. In bootcamp i allocate the partition then i click install and bootcamp will not see the disk.

Can i install windows 7 via bootcamp (on my MB Air) while using remote disc? I put the windows 7 disk in my macbook pro drive, and connect to my brand new macbook air via remote disk. In bootcamp (on my air) i allocate the partition, then i click install, and bootcamp will not see the disk from my macbook pro's drive. How do i get the bootcamp assistant running on my MB air to automatically find the disk in my macbook pro with the ISO image of windows 7? The remote disk on my air can find the cd but bootcamp will not begin installing it. Anyway to do this without buying the damned usb drive?

I don't know first hand if you can use the Remote Disk option with Windows but as of 10.7.2 you can now use BCAssistant to make a bootable USB (thumb drive or external disk) W7 installer with the Boot Camp drivers installed also. Have you tried that yet?

  • Help!  I transferred the data from my old Macbook pro with some success, but now my new Macbook Air contents think they are the remote disc and that the old Mac Pro is the hard drive.  What did I do and how do I fix it?

I transferred the data from my old 2006 MacBook Pro 17".  Thanks for the help on that.  I thought that I was doing it right.  Used a backup hard drive and time machine.  Problem:  Now my new macbook air thinks it is the old machine and that the remote disc is the mb air.  Clicks want to take things to mobile me instead of iCloud, old applications launch instead of the new ones.  How do I fix the mess I have made?  Like I said before,  I am a software user and don't really know what I am doing when I start into the guts of the software, but I am able to learn.  Thanks for any help.

iTunes- How to move the library to an EHD
After you move the library you need to open iTunes by first depressing the OPTION key then launching iTunes. You will be given a choice of which library to use. This can then be made a permanent change, if you wish, in the Advanced section of iTunes preferences.

  • MacBook Air problem with Remote Disc

I am trying to upload a disc to my MBA from a shared MBPro.  Remote Disc recognizes the shared MBP and the CD but cannot access the data.  Any suggestions?

Actually the restriction DOES apply to an audio CD.
    From this document:http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2057
"MacBook Air and Mac mini do not support playing DVD movies or audio CD media with Remote Disc. In addition, some discs, such as game discs, may be copy-protected and are therefore unusable. To play DVD movies, audio CD media, or copy-protected discs on the MacBook Air or Mac mini, use the MacBook Air SuperDrive."

  • Remote disc in finder devices - can't remove it

I have a "remote disc" item in my finder under devices and cannot eject or remove.
    iMac, OS X Version 10.6.7
Background: I have 2 very old Compact Flash USB card readers (Intelliflash and ImageMate) and several Compact Flash cards that I wanted to view before trashing.
The remote disc showed up after plugging these in to my iMac. Could not access the cards and now I can't remove the remoted disc.
I have tried to use the Finder>Preferences>Sidebar to remove, but the remote disk is not included in the list (see screenshot below).
This doesn't seem to be causing any harm, just annoying...
    Any suggestions would much appreciated.
    Thanks,

  • Remote Disc (Non-air macbook)

I understand they added DVD/CD sharing (remote disc) in 10.5.2, but how do I get this to work with a PC? (I haven't tried it w/ a mac either, I only have 1 mac and 2 PCs)
P.S. I know you may find this completely unnecessary, but I'm interested out of pure curiousity

    Hi and welcome to Discussions,
have a look here http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=307141 and here http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=307317
Since the 'CD and DVD sharing' software for Windows is not avaiable standalone, but part of the MacBook Air OSX DVD, other Macs are currently left out.

  • Remote disc installation of CS3 fails on disc 2 of 2

I'm using a Mac Book Pro to install Adobe Creative Suite 3 - Web Premium, onto my Macbook Air, using the remote disc feature in Mac OSX.
The first installation disc (applications) installs and then it asks for the second disc (content) to be loaded - I insert the disc and wait a few seconds before clicking OK to continue but the message won’t go away.
Eventually I have to press Cancel and the installation fails. Tried this a few times now and I need to know if this is an Adobe or Mac OSX issue. Would be nice if Adobe could give me a direct download link for the software but they don't appear to support previous versions of CS.

In case you are able to copy contents of disc 2 to your local drive, then try performing a silent install. Or just create a local copy of installer (following Step1 and Step2) and run Setup from there.

  • Macbook late 2007 can't use remote disc

Snow Leopard retail disc won't load so I'm trying to do remote install.  I can see remote disc under devices but when I Boot with option key pressed there is no option for the remote disc to boot to.  I'm connected via ethernet to a windows 7 computer with the remote disc app installed and running.  Please help.

    Hello MacDoode,
It sounds like you are trying to boot to a Mac OS X install disc in a Windows computer with Remote Disc set up. According to the following article this is not a supported function of the feature:

Note: These types of discs or activities are not supported by DVD or CD sharing:

  • Remote disc multidisc install

I'm having trouble installing a program that comes on 2 discs. The first disc install fine, then I am prompted by the installer to insert the second disc. I insert the second disc on a 13" macbook pro, and nothing happens on my air. I went to the finder on the air and asked to share the second disc, and still no recognition or continuation of the install.
Has anyone attempted a multidisc install via remote disc? If so, did you encounter the same problem I am having? Were you able to continue the install, and if so, how? Thanks.

I had the same issue but it worked once I asked to use drive again, then double clicked on the disk in finder... this then mounts it to your desktop & voila.
Am running OS 10.6.6 on a MacBook Air using a 10.5.8 MacPro for a drive.
    Hope it works for you.

  • Remote Disc not able to Install Aperture 2

How can I install Aperture 2 on my MacBook Air? I receive an error message saying that installation can not occur over a network connection. I understood that using Remote Disc with the MacBook Air (without a DVD/CD drive) would take care of this.

I installed Aperture 2 on my MacBook Air a few days ago (boxed UK educational package). I had no problem using Remote Disc. Making a disc image from the DVD and installing from the image also works.

  • Remote disc icon?

    Hi,
Just got one of the new Mac minis and it's a cracking wee machine. One small question, however. I re-installed OS X and under devices as well as under Computer I have a cd icon saying 'Remote Disc'. I understand that this is for installing OS X across a network or sharing a disc but why is the icon there? Shouldn't it be there only if I have cd or dvd sharing on?
This is on a clean install (10.5.6) nothing changed, wireless connection. I've got a unibody Macbook and a Power Mac all running Leopard and none of them seem to show the icon.
Apologies for the really dumb questions but gets me wondering why it's there by default.
    Cheers guys!

    dunes,
I have the same experience with my new Mac Mini.
None of my computers have DVD/CD sharing turned on.
Even if I turn on DVD/CD sharing on any my computers, none of the other computers show a Remote Disc in the sidebar.
This Remote Disc has never showed up on any of my computers until I got this new Mini.
There doesn't seem to be much info on DVD/CD sharing that I can find. It doesn't appear that anyone is using this feature except for owners of the MacBook Air.
At this point, I would just like to get rid of this Remote Disc icon and get back to normal.
I have found 3rd party documents on how to turn this feature on for non MacBook Air users, but nothing to turn it off.
