Teaching a workshop on Flash. Please help!

Hello,
My name is Gordon Gavin and I am teaching a class on Game
Design to 11-13 year olds this summer. Here is the description of
the workshop from the brochure:

create basic animations using Macromedia Flash, and explore all the
elements involved in creating different types of interactive games.
Artist ---- shows you storyboarding, characters, level creation,

The original artist who was going to lead the workshop
canceled, so I am taking over for him.
My huge concerns are what kind of content can students
create, and feel like they were
successful in 15 hours? This includes time for instruction
of basic principles of game design, Flash interface, manipulating
objects, and basic coding techniques in addition to actual
independent work time.
I am an Art Educator first, and design/mod games as a serious
hobby. My concern as an educator is setting up the students to
succeed. Can the promises stated on the flyer be delivered?
Right now I am thinking of making a basic
“action” game in Flash, and then teach the students how
to make their own game assets and import them into my template.
What KIND of game would be best, I’m not sure yet.
Sidescroller? Maze?
If anyone has more expertise about what can/can’t be
done or any suggestions and ideas of your own, please contact me in
this thread. If you know of any books or other resources that would
also be a great help. Thank you very much.

The liquid will seep onto the motherboard. When it dries the solid deposits of sugars and other conducting chemicals will cause circuitry problems, damage the board with corrosion, etc. Over time it will no longer run fine.
Furthermore, you are not trained in cleaning the computer. To clean it properly requires complete disassembly. It must be done ASAP before further damage occurs.
But, it's your computer. You can argue or take my advice. It's not my computer.

Images do not store text data in any isolateable manner, it is comprised of just pixels like anything else in the image. You would need to develop some form of complicated text recognition program to be able to extract text from an image, and I don't believe anyone has.

Actiontec GT701C DSL light keeps flashing please help

I use to have the WIFI router from verizon but the wifi range was not strong enough for certain items in my home... in addition the items could not even find the network on wifi. i replaced it with a Actiontec GT701C so i could use my old wireless router that was strong enough to support my whole home .. But know when i connect my DSL line to the New modem the GT701c i can not access the internet .. i Could get to the configure screen but other than that the DSL Light keeps flashing any suggestions.. i have rebooted the modem and tryed diffrent phone line and phone jacks in my home please help !!!

Does your older modem connect still? If so, could you tell us which modem it is so that we could help you obtain the Transceiver Statistics from it? It's possible the ActionTec could either be defective or it could be sensitive to noise on the line if the signal isn't the greatest.

I want to put a HTML webpage into a certain field that is
scrollable and when a link is clicked that box will change to give
the content from the new page in that field ... please help, and
also can javascript hover-off links from a webpage be put into
flash?

1. Flash contains a TextField component which has
limited
html support, not enough to support the usual html required of
an active web page.

2. You can use usual html
anchor
tag in a Flash TextField.
3. You need to turn on html for a Flash TextField. This can
be done in the
IDE

Flash requires a different design mentality than do
HTML/CSS/JavaScript pages. So there are more creative approaches to

Another person who has a problem with Flash - Please Help!!

I have a Dell Dimension 4700 Intel (R) Pentium (R) - 4 CPU 2.80 GHz 2.79 GHz 504 MB of RAM
For a few years now I would have to restore the computer to an earlier time after an update was done in order to view youtube, etc. It seemed that when my computer did an automatic update it would mess up the flash player.
My husband just recently did another update and now the flash isn't working and the computer won't restore anymore.
I keep getting the following messages: adobe flash player active x set up failed to install 19166
program error: failed to register status installation complete
I have uninstalled and installed the flash several times
everytime i go to install flash it says: Adobe Flash Player 10: This application has been downloaded before. Reload?
Then I get: Your security settings do not allow websites to use ActiveX controls installed on your computer.
I don't want to take this somewhere because I have a feeling that will just wipe the computer clean and I have a feeling it is something stupid that I'm not doing.
Please Help.

OK...Check, check...did all that. I am cutting and pasting a segment from the flash troubleshooting page because its exactly what is happening to me. There were no responses to help this person.
"I've tried installing flash player 9 but am not able to do so. It will begin installing but when it gets to 'items remaining: 4' the progress bar continues to move and underneath says searching but nothing happens. I tried leaving it on all night but same thing when I came back in the morning. When I close the installer it then says 'stopping now may result in an incomplete set of software' Also, when I tried uninstalling previous versions, the uninstaller does nothing. It says 'items uninstalled: 0' and 'processing', but same thing, the thing spins but nothing happens. i tried the other steps given to see if that helped but nothing seems to work."

I tried some of the suggestions above the last two posts. But it looks like my problem is the same as those.
I even tried to post on there but from what I see it looks like I have to have flash to do it...I get the page with the blue lego brick.
I'm pulling my hair out. I didn't realize how much of the internet ran on flash.

Delete Flash, please help!

Hi, how to delete complet flash for reinstall again.
Full delete fron windows registry. Because, wen i delete from
add/remove programs, and reinstall, the problem persist.
I want that it takes me like a clean installation, as if
outside the first time that I install.

Hi. I had the same problem. You have to download the flash
un-installer from this web site. I forget how I found it, but if
you search for it under "Search" on this web site, you'll probably
find it. I think that is what I did. Once you have downloaded it,
you have to run it and it will uninstall flash. Carefull though.
Once you remove it, you cannot re-install it from this web site.
Check that you have "Flash.exe" on your computer. I found mine in:
C:\WINDOWS2\SYSTEM\MACROMED\FLASH.
The icon is a circle colored grey with a small " f " in it.
This will download Flash again for you. I don't know why it is not
shown in the Macromedia web site. I couldn't find it here myself.

Get 1.3 from the website if that's what your board came with originally. If it's not, get the one that came with your board. The reason I say that is that is, at least for me, the flashing program says there is a Bootblock Mismatch with all other bios' except what came with my motherboard. ?(
Make that backup disk and remane that bios file for your board to AMIBOOT.ROM. and have it in.
Unplug your power. Take out your RAM. Clear the Cmos via the jumper, I believe it's JBAT1. Put your RAM back in. Then power up. Maybe have someone turn on the power while you hold down the Ctrl + Home Key. You really have to be fast. When you get your floppy, the board will read from it and restore your bios - then beep 4 times. It will then reboot. If you're lucky, all will be ok and you can go in and reset your settings in the Cmos.
I want to make this suggestion to anyone who flashes their bios': Have that backup disk in while you flash. If the flash goes bad, when you hit the reset button, immediately the boot block will hunt for that AMIBOOT.ROM file. If you shut down your power with the power button, your system won't power back up. You will swear it's dead. You won't get it back until you unplug your power cord, clear your cmos, reset your RAM, power back on and IMMEDIATELY hold down the Ctrl + Home Key. I really don't know what is going wrong with these bios releases, but for some boards, they appear to kill the board. I'm convinced that I will never be able to use any other bios but 1.3. There is a glitch in the chip evidently. With the bios that came programmed on the chip, you can, seemingly, get your board back. At least, that's been true for me.
Just keep trying. I believe you can get your board back. The boards are really nice but really finicky.

Bad BIOS Flashing - Please Help !

I'm having a serious trouble because the BIOS UPDATE failed since I had a power outage while I was updating the BIOS.
Since that, I couldn't get any video output, it's only 8 beeps with the orange light, and then the blue light and nothing happens. Is there a way to prepare an USB KEY with the BIOS updates, initiating the CPU with the Windows+B keys pressed on?
I've tried to apply the BIOS UPDATE SP63535 who had the BIOS version ANP_704.bin
Please HELP ME, thanks a LOT !!!

New at Flash, please help! Sound On/Off Button

I'm trying to create a button that when clicked once, it plays music, and when clicked again, it stops. I don't need the button image to change at all, I just need a simple start/stop.
I've been able to make the button start the music when clicked but I've not been successful in making it stop.
I am using CS4, and have no scripting experience.
This is for a graphic arts assignment so please help!

IBook G4 grey screen,then "finder" folder with "?" flashing, please help!!

Hello again my fellow smarter than me mac lovers. OK, here is my problem. I used my ibook all night last night at work. Used it this morning just fine. My teenage daughter was using it and she stated that it froze on a screen she was looking at on possible you-tube. She proceeded to turn it off (not restart), and when she turned it back on it only responded with a grey screen. After a few minutes of the grey screen, a small blue folder will flash in the middle with the "finder" face/icon on it and a question mark flashing. It stays there a few minutes, but no cursor to click on the folder ect. After several minutes of that, the screen will go black and the computer will turn off. I have tried to reset the PRAM and PMU, but no go. Do not have discs, as this was a buy this past summer refurbished. I love my ibook and really hope it can be fixed. If there are any suggestions, please let me know. If not, I guess we will take a trip to the apple doctor. Thanks again for any help you might have.

Hello Gengap,
This sounds like a failing harddrive issue....a computer starting up with a flashing question mark means that it is unable to find the software to load up the OS. Since you don't have the discs that should have come with the computer, you can try inserting a Tiger disc, or some other equivalent OS.
Start up from a disc, when the installer opens, open up Disk Utility. In Disk Utility, you should see a harddrive appear on the top left - but if it is failing (this just happened to me on an iBook G4), then it might not be there at all.
So if you close out Disk Utility, and you try to proceed with the installation, if the disc is not being recognized, then it will not be available to select a destination disc to try a re-install.
You might be SOL in recovering any data that is on the drive. A replacement HD should be in order if you are unable to re-install the OS.
Once the replacement HD is in, when you go to set it up again, you'll want to install a fresh clean copy of the OS by erasing the HD (incase it's formatted to work for Winblows) - you'll want to re-format it to work for Mac OS (Extended), and then re-install.
I'm not sure how comfortable you are with taking computers apart or not but since you bought it second hand anyways, you won't be voiding any warranty's of any kind. I just did this very same procedure on a 12" iBook G4 800MHz.

Hi whiskey3 from your msg, I assume you would want to change
the image on mouseover of each link. To explain all steps might be
a bit long here. However, basically you can achieve this by using
'Buttons'. Try some of the tutorials in Flash. It will help you a
lot. By the way, what you want to achieve sounds easier to be done
in dreamweaver with javascript.

New to Flash - please help

I am trying to create a simple slideshow. Each time a new
photo comes up, I need the viewer to be able to click and go to a
separate html page for each photo. I know this is very simple, but
I keep getting code errors. The first photo works, but after that,
I get duplication errors. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Without seeing what the errors are saying I am only guessing
that the duplication may be regarding the addEventListener
attachments. You may be able to get away with using:
inv_btn.removeEventListener(MouseEvent.CLICK,
buttonClickHandler);
ahead of each secondary (after the first frame) assignment of
adding the listener.
Another more efficient approach would be to have the
buttonClickHandler and event listener remain constant, but pull the
urlRequest out as a separate variable and only change its value for
each player's frame.
So you'd have a layer that spans all other layers that
contains the url variable declaration, event listener assignment,
and the buttonClickHandler function, and only in the first frame.

Creating eLearning Content Using Flash - Please Help

I am tasked with creating eLearning training using Flash. I know how to create flash movies, tweens, etc. I am also pretty well versed with Dreamweaver, HTML, etc.
But how do you create the fixed header and a footer with navigation and the navigation between 30 to 40 "pages" or "movies"? I am assuming there is some automated method to create navigation...
We want a fixed header, fixed navigation in a footer, movie content in the center, and the ability to automatically move from "page" to page and also allow the student to click Next and Previous buttons to move from page to page.
I would greatly appreciate a link to a tutorial or any advice on getting started.

Check in help under the Tutorial section for "Add motion
tweens"
Basically you need to import your images, convert them to
instances like
movie clips or graphics symbols then motion tween them to get
them move
and use color effect Alpha to get them to fade in.
Check the help first and tell me how far can you get from
there, whatever
problem you face, post back, will help you go ahead with it.

The instance names were copied straight from where i named them so they are right, this is making me mad because ive been working on cs5.5 at uni, and on cs4 at home and my cs4 doesnt run my cs5.5 work i had made a start on (where all this was working)

And the button going back doesnt work, Im in urgent need of help because this assignment is due next week, and ive been working on it for at least 2 weeks now and nothing i can do seems to be working.

The 1009 error indicates that one of the objects being targeted by your code is out of scope. This could mean that the object....
- is not in the display list
- doesn't have an instance name (or the instance name is mispelled)
- does not exist in the frame where that code is trying to talk to it
- is animated into place but is not assigned instance names in every keyframe for it
- is one of two or more consecutive keyframes of the same objects with no name assigned in the preceding frame(s).
If you go into your Publish Settings Flash section and select the option to Permit debugging, your error message should have a line number following the frame number which will help you isolate which object is involved.

Trying to add a flash please help

I cannot seem to add a flash at the very begining of my clip please someone help

Some effects "fade" in, and don't fully show for the first couple of frames. I run into this with the "Striped subtitle" effect all the time. It takes about 20 frames for the subtitle to show up in full strength. The workaround I found for starting a movie with a striped subtitle in the first frame (so that the movie thumbnail shows the subtitle) goes like this:
First, I pad the beginning of the movie with some extra filler footage. Then I apply the effect, starting at the added filler footage. Once the effect is rendered, I remove the filler footage, and presto, the effect starts in full force on the first frame!
Maybe you can use the same trick to get a flash to show up at the very beginning of your clip.
