Tear free 2D desktop, is it possible?

I've started using Ubuntu about 4 years ago and consequently I was using Compiz. Recently I moved to Arch Linux and decided to try a new WM, Openbox. The first thing I noticed is that there was a lot of tearing (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Screen_tearing) when moving windows around. I tried to find a solution to this problem but I couldn't. I tried different xorg configurations, different drivers, different monitors, and even different graphics cards but the result was always the same, tearing. The thing is this is not related to the WM itself, it also happens in every other WM I've tried (even GNOME) except when I'm using Compiz.
The problem for me to find the root cause of this problem is that I know most people do have screen tearing but they don't even notice it. I tried to show it to my brother and he wasn't able to notice it. I just want to know if there is a solution to this problem or if this is just a consequence of not using hardware acceleration, like Compiz does by using OpenGL.

I've used xcompmgr and the result is the same, maybe it needs some special tweaking? Is xcompmgr HW accelerated? Does it use opengl?
My graphics card is a nvidia 9600gt and I have tried different drivers (both proprietary and open-source).

[SOLVED] Tear Free feature on Catalyst 13.1 causes 30 fps

I've observed a strange thing with latest Catalyst drivers.
Version from old official packages catalyst-dkms-13.1-2 and catalyst-utils-13.1-5 works almost normally (on XServer 1.13.3).
But in later Catalyst versions, including catalyst-test-13.6-3 from AUR, Tear Free Desktop option causes 30 fps.
Without this option fps is normal (60 with VSync enabled), but causes unwanted effect in video and games.
Hardware: AMD Radeon HD 6450.
UPDATE: FPS with Tear Free is normal (60) in fullscreen windows.

Are there any free remote desktop programs

Are there any free remote desktop or remote assistance programs available for Panther? I only need a server for the Panther computer, as I would be helping that user, but he would not need to help me. I was wondering if anyone knew of any. I wanted to try LogMeIn, but it requires Tiger. I couldn't find anything at Wikipedia's comparison of remote desktop applications. Thanks

There are no known viruses for Macs. There is adware and malware. For adware, those things that keep poping up in your browser you can use AdwareMedic from thesafemac.com to quickly and easily remove all know adware.
That site also have this Adware Removal Guide if you prefer to do it manually thru the Finder.

Full Desktop, is it possible?

I have a Dual G5 workstation and two ceiling mounted projectors and would like to run a full desktop, is this possible? I am trying to run a Keynote presentation that will span both projectors. The resolution should be 2800 x 1050, not 2 x's 1400 x 1050.

I am familiar with display mirroring and individually running both projectors (side-by-side desktop with the menu bar on one projector), the issue is that I require one large desktop. As an example, when running Keynote or the DVD player the image needs to be centred (1/2 on one, 1/2 on the other). The problem is that I get the Keynote presentation playing on one projector and the speaker screen on the other.
Ideally I would like to have the Menu bar span both desktops. I’ve been able to do this on the PC using the appropriate Nvidia drivers.

Desktop delivery address - possible options

Classic scenario, EBP 5.0, R/3 4.7
As we have more than 3000 users who will have desktop delivery of ordered items I would like to have Ship-To address defined from employee master record coming from HR system. This address must be visible on Purchase Order issue from backend system to vendor. Users exist only in EBP, not in the backend.
I know that it is possible to enter in "Edit Internal Addresses" all Ship-To addresses but this is manual task and need to be administered every time when employee changes the room. Not to mention that it is necessary to do it initially. Is there any option to do this task with some report. This address is stored in ppoma_bbp, attribute ADDR_SHIP.
Problem is that company regulations do not allow that users manage this address on their own.
So, to ask question, is there any option that address from user master record is visible on purchase order out of backend system or is any possibility to manage initial entry and late administration with some report?

Declare a variable PLANT_ADRNR in the form interface.
In the print program
get Plant address number
SELECT SINGLE adrnr FROM t001w
INTO gv_plant_adrnr
WHERE werks = <EKPO-WERKS>.
Pass this gv_plant_adrnr to form interface variable in the Smartform call function module.
Create a address node in the smartform and provide the address number as your form interface variable &PLANT_ADRNR&.
Now you will get the address.

Xfce4 virtual desktop configuration and possible alternatives

I’ve been a satisfied xfce4 user for some time now, but my needs have recently changed. In the past, I have used just a single Workspace/Desktop to meet my needs. Now, however, I find myself needing several virtual Desktops to better organize my workflow. For instance, I would like to have separate Desktops for different functions, such as: personal apps, business apps, utilities, remote desktop sessions, various VM’s, etc.
I know xfce4 supports multiple “Workspaces”, but I am currently unable to get them setup the way that I would like. For example:
Xfce4 session manager only seems to offer to save the session information from the first “Workspace”, meaning that I’ll have to start several apps in all the additional Workspaces manually after every restart of X.
The xfce4 Panel doesn’t appear to be customizable for each individual Workspace. I would like to have a different set of Launchers, Tray, and/or panel Widgets for different Workspaces if possible.
It would be convenient to have some Workspaces default to “tiled” and others to “floating” window presentation if possible, although this is of a lower priority to me.
Is something like this possible with xfce4? Maybe I can replace some xfce4 components with something else to obtain more functionality? Maybe something else altogether? Or, is this all just wishful thinking?
I hate to abandon xfce4 (custom themes, configurations, comfort level, etc),. But, I will if I can find a sufficient reason. Any thoughts or recommendations appreciated!

Free Transform rotate using keyboard possible?

Does anyone know if it's possible to make fine adjustments to rotate an image using a keyboard when in Free Transform mode?
Eg, I can use the left and right keys to nudge left and right but it's awkward trying to use a trackpad to make fine adjustments when rotating in image.

With Free Transform active, highlight the Angle field in the Option Bar, and us the up an down arrow keys to change it. Holding Shift while doing so increases the amount of each nudge.

Apple Remote Desktop can't possibly run this slow - please help!

Running ARD 3.2 on MacBook Pro 2.4ghz w/ 4GB RAM, trying to access a iMac 2.1ghz w/ 2.5GB RAM via internet connection (DSL speeds). The iMac has ARD 3.2.1.
I have made a flat-color desktop on the iMac, closed out all non-essential programs freeing up RAM on both machines, closed all windows on both machines, matched the screens to Millions of Colors on both machines - and when I connect from the MacBook Pro, it may take 30-40 seconds for the screen to draw, and even longer to open up a folder located on the desktop. Copying small files (500k) takes so long, I gave up after 10 minutes.
ARD can't possible operate this slow, so I am assuming I am missing something here. Any insight would be appreciated!

Typically upstream and downstream speeds for broadband connections disparate. For instance Downstream speeds can sometimes reach 7-8mbps or more. Upstream on the other hand is probably no more than a tenth of that.
How you connect will also have a bearing. Using a wired connection to the local network is going to be better than a wireless one generally speaking.
Unless you have the finances to pay for an SDS Service or a service that offers 1:1 ratio this won't change and you have to put up with it. I reguarly connect remotely and see this most of the time. I select a graphic level that is as low as possible but still allows me to see what is going on. Even then it can be slow.

Agent Desktop *Alerts? Possible to implement?

A supervisor has asked if there is any way to implement some sort of alert on the agent desktop. The reason why is, many of the agents are assigned projects in which some cases, they are set to "Not Ready" while working on these projects. However, they are only supposed to be working on the projects in down time, which means between calls.
Some of the agents forget to put themselves back in "Ready" and wind up screwing up their KPI because they are in "Not Ready" status for extended amounts of time.
Is there any way to create a tab which would show "Not Ready" in Red and "Ready" in Green on their Agent Desktop where it is very easy to see? Or maybe a screen pop if they're not in "Ready" mode after a certain amount of time?

I have created an application, it basically does a similar thing. It notifies the agent if something happens. That something might be a change in SL or anything that can be written using an SQL query.
It's basically a simple Java app, sitting in the system tray and whenever an action is triggered, a text message pops up as a 'bubble'.
One of my customers use it to poke the call center agents when they are on the phone with a customer for a longer period of time and in the meantime a certain number of phone calls accumulate in the queue to finish talking. Or when the SL level goes bellow 75 so that the agents go back to ready.
Send me a private message if you are interested. The only requirement is a recent Java Runtime Environment (JRE 7) installed on the agent PC and a Tomcat 7 server.

Pictures of desktop no longer possible upgrade 10.5 10.6 on blind server

I have a script (the script is not the problem) that starts the TeamViewer application on my blind server and then makes pictures of the running application and sends them per email to me so I can see it is running on my server.
Under 10.5 it worked always (still does), under 10.6 it does not, I can hear it make the ‘click’ sound but no picture appears on the desktop (btw the script is fine so that is not why I post here). Also using the keyboard commands, when logged in to the blind server, produces the ‘click’ but no pic.
Here is the script for the record:

Now what I found is that if I connect a screen to the server it makes the pictures in both ways. No screen no pic. conclusion the availability of a screen effects the whole procedure.

I'm wondering if it's related to upgrading to 10.6 rather than starting with a clean installation or to restoring user files from 10.5 on a 10.6 install? There was a similar problem I experienced after using Time Machine to restore my user files and account after a clean 10.6 install.. I was nolonger able to use the system's screenshot function (appleshift3 or 4). I mean, I could use it, but if it wasn't sending the data to a file, using the ctrl modifier so it would send the snapshot image directly to the clipboard. I used this function under 10.5 to copy backgrounds where an icon was to be placed for something I didn't want visible and paste the background into the file's icon in file info. Well after using Time Machine to restore my 10.5 user data, somehow 10.6 nolonger works to paste from the clipboard into the file icon. I had to resort to using the regular snapimage to file function, open the snapshot in preview, copy to clipboard in preview and then paste over the file icon in file info. I even talked to Apple about this problem and they couldn't figure out what was going on.. Something from 10.5 in user preferences files disables clipboard functionality used by many applications in strange ways... I gave up trying to fix this problem...

i recall in system 9, the startup drive was always at top right... toppamost-rightamost..
not the case anymore... it's user modified... by mere placement...
i'd like to instantly see which drive or partition is my current startup volume...
by having the startup volume first and toppamost...

As ‘WZZZ’ wrote, it was in Leopard that Apple abandoned the time-honoured placement of the boot volume’s icon in the top right corner.
The easiest way to see which volume you are booted from is to go to About this Mac from the Apple Icon in the MenuBar
...or double-click on a volume icon on the desktop and in the window that opens (root level) look at the icon of Applications, Users, System or Library. Those will be ‘special’ icons only on the boot volume.
If you manually move the boot volume to the top right it should remain there for subsequent boots -- but note that if the volume is used for cloning a re-cloning may alter the placement again.
Bottom line: Don't suspect that you have something amiss, don't try altering settings -- the 'fix' has to come from Apple.

I would like to use my iPod as a memory media to perform a daily backup (at a certain given time, every day) for a folder in my computer. How do I do that?
Do I need to have some sort of a software that will be directed to the iPod as its media? Is such a thing possible?

Hmmm... I've never done something like that myself... I would imagine you would need a dedicated application for backing up.
Maybe someone will come along who knows more. Otherwise, you might try Google.
