Tears in my eyes...

So I finally ventured into Illustrator CS4 and I find that...:
When creating a box with snap to grid on, it truly "snaps" to the grid.
When changing the stroke position on the box, the control points do not change position to match the outside of the stroke, but keep their same position.
Illustrator is suddenly useful to me. Wow. I am impressed. Tears of joy!
Whoever made this happen, thank you!
Now someone go smack the InDesign team with that correct stroke behavior!

Looks like another reason to upgrade.

  • Flash CS3 bringing tears to my eyes...

    Hi there,
Please check this screen cap of a "corrupted" Flash CS3 swf :
    http://www.fairtraderugs.com/corrupted_swf.png
Can anyone tell me why I'm getting these horrible white
"gaps" appearing in the published SWF(image on the right), but NOT
in the original FLA (image on the left). And perhaps more
importantly is there anything I can do about this corruption?
I had assumed it was something to do with cubic to quadratic
bezier conversion during the import from AI CS3, but I assume as
the Flash IDE can render it correctly this cannot be the cause of
    the problem?
    Many thanks for your thoughts,
    Rich

How is the AI file setup (layers)?
I have seen this before in very rare situations and I know
there's a way to fix it - I am betting
the original image is very small right? If so - scale it up
large - really large - before importing
into Flash. Feel free to send me your Ai file:

  • Not Apple's greatest upgrade

Not the smoothest OS upgrade Apple has released. Maybe they were just trying not to make Windows Vista look so bad. My upgrade took me 13 hours (an unlucky number that!), but did finally work. The take home message is:
IF YOU CAN'T AFFORD AN EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE BIG ENOUGH TO CLONE YOUR WHOLE INTERNAL DRIVE AND SOME CLONING/BACKUP SOFTWARE, DON'T BUY LEOPARD UNLESS YOU ARE PREPARED TO LOSE ALL YOUR DATA AND RE-INSTALL ALL YOUR APPLICATIONS.
Here is the history of my rocky road to Leopard:
22:30 25 October 2007: Clone perfectly working 500 Gb internal drive (247 Gb free space) running under OS 10.4.10 with latest updates to external 1 Tb drive using Intego's Personal BackupX4 .
    22:45 25 October 2007: Go to bed.
07:10 26 October 2007: Check there are zero errors in external clone.
18:45 26 October 2007: Purchase Family 5 pack licence for Leopard
16:00 27 October 2007: Bite lip, insert Leopard Instal DVD and follow instructions
16:03 27 October 2007: Get warning message in window where you choose the drive on which the upgrade is to take place: 'Mac OSX cannot start up from this volume. The destination disk must be erased for installation.'
16:04 27 October 2007: Reboot successfully from volume from which Mac OSX supposedly cannot start up and check formatting of disk - it's Mac OS extended (journaled) as it should be.
    16:05 27 October 2007: Re-attempt Leopard install - result same warning.
16:10 - 17:10 27 October 2007: Conclude there must be some faults in the headers, tree structure, or permissions on the internal disk, so spend an hour checking internal disk with Disk Utility, Drive Genius and Tech Tools Pro - all of which say there are NO FAULTS. Nevertheless, to be sure I defragment the drive.
    17:11 27 October 2007: Re-attempt installation of Leopard - result, same warning.
17:12 27 October 2007: Ring AppleCare and wait about 20 minutes listening to the world's most untuneful tunes from the iTunes Music Store. I figure that the wait means I am not the only customer having problems and wonder whether Apple Customer care were prescient enough to roster extra technical support people for the days following the release of Leopard.
17:32 27 October 2007: Technical support Assistant, Dave answers my call and I explain the problem. Dave says, 'Oh that means you have to re-partition your internal drive, restore your clone to the new partition, install Leopard on the new partition and blah de blah de blah de blah! I dig my heels in and tell Dave that is simply not acceptable and that Apple has promised me that this upgrade will be smooth and the easiest yet. I am not prepared to do all that - I want another solution.
17:33 27 October 2007: Dave agrees to call a higher authority and we try various thinks like ejecting all the external (Firewire) hard drives to no effect. Dave's higher authority then suggests I check the internal drive with Disk Utility again (having restarted from the Leopard Install DVD). As soon as I click on Utilities in the Menu bar the yellow warning sign on my internal drive disappears mysteriously and is replaced by the friendly green arrow saying that the installation onto my internal drive can proceed.
17:50 27 October 2007: Mistake #1 - I follow Dave's suggestion and click on 'CONTINUE' (with hindsight what I should have done at this point is to click on 'OPTIONS' and established whether of not the radio button beside the first option that reads something like 'Upgrade will replace existing OS and no other files or data will be affected', but I'm a trusting person and follow the advice of dave's higher authority. The upgrade seems to be going OK after 5 minutes, so Dave gives me a case number and asks me to call back and quote it if further problems occur.
19:30 27 October 2007: (Note: 90 minutes after the AppleCare Helpdesk closes on a Saturday!) The Leopard installation program completes and asks me whether or not I wish to enjoy the delights of Leopard. I click 'YES' and Leopard relaunches successfully and I check the contents of my internal drive and find to my horror that, without warning. Leopard has done a 'CLEAN INSTALL' - all my data and applications are GONE! I am now ON MY OWN UNTIL 09:00 Monday - I swear, pull out my voodoo manikin of Steve Jobs and insert a few curare-tipped hat pins into it.
19:35 27 October 2007: Feeling better, I reconnect external hard disk with cloned Tiger OS + data and attempt to use Migration Assistant to migrate all my families accounts and applications to Leopard. Migration Assistant tells me that the external clone does not have Mac OS X installed on it (despite the fact that I can see a 'System' folder containing 10.4.10 on it) and that it can't migrate anything. I swear some more and put more hat pins into 'Steve' - one right through his groin!
19:40 27 October 2007: I attempt to change the start-up disk in Leopard to the external hard disk with the cloned 10.4.10 - everything seems to work, except when I click restart (with the padlock item locked) the computer refuses to restart from the external drive and defaults to Leopard (3 f**king times!). I insert more hat pins into Steve, including an extra long one that goes up his rectum and out of his right eyeball.
19:50 27 October 2007: Becoming desperate and not being able to reboot from the external drive I decide to install Personal BackupX4 on the internal drive and attempt to clone the external drive onto the internal drive. I can't see how this will work with the Leopard OS being needed to run PBX4 and it trying to write a 10.4.10 System folder over the top of it, but what have I got to lose?
19:51 27 October 2007: To my complete surprise with the source set to the external drive and the destination set to the boot drive the clone starts as if OK. I go and work on my bicycle.
01:30 28 October 2007: PBX4 says that it has transferred all of the files (except a couple of fonts that are apparently incompatible with Leopard) but has entered 'flat-line mode' where it says it is 'finishing' but not transferring any data - this has been going on since 00:30. I try to exit PBX4 without success - even force quit doesn't work. I turn off the Mac and try to restart - the grey screen of death spins its little wheel for 10 minutes while I insert my remaining hat pins into Steve who is now looking like a porcupine.
01:45 28 October 2007: I go get my trusty Tiger install DVDs for the PowerMac (Intel Xeon x 2) and try to remember how to get the DVD drive bay door open when the Mac won't boot. I scream 'Open the pod bay doors Hal' at Steve waking my wife and both dog's all of whom start barking at me! I calm down, apologize to my wife and the dogs, and try holding down the eject key when I push the power on button. It works! I realize that the pins in Steve are beginning to work - this is the first piece of 'good fortune' that I have experienced for 24 hours! I re-install OS 10.4.8 (which came with the PowerMac and update it to 10.4.10 using Safari.
03:15 28 October 2007: I now have my Power Mac in the same condition as it was at 16:00 the previous day having used Migration Assistant under 10.4.10 successfully (Unlike Leopard, 10.4.10 DOES RECOGNIZE 10.4.10 on an external drive) to recover all of the family's accounts and data from the external clone. I go outside and stare up at the night sky, I see a mouse scuttle towards the hen house and hear the click of a mouse trap. Seizing my chance, I rush to the hen house and retrieve the still warm corpse. I prepare a small pile of twigs in the garden under the (nearly) full moon and place Steve and the hat pins on top of it. I cut the dead mouse's head off and squeeze it's blood onto Steve. I light the twigs and strip naked and dance solemnly around the sacrificial fire incanting 'worms, woolly aphids, codling moths and all known pests of the Apple tree give me The Power!' Lights go on in the house next door.
03:30 28 October 2007: I explain to the police patrol officer what I am doing and why and he helps me put my clothes on again. Fortunately he is sympathetic, because he had attempted to install Leopard on his Intel iMac before coming on duty and was still watching the grey screen of death when he had to leave for work. He tells me his name is Darren and asks me if the moonlight sacrifice has worked for me in the past. I tell him that it did when I had a similar experience going from OS 9.5.5 to OSX, but I add that I had to use owl's feathers on that occasion as there were no mice in the hen house that night. Darren asks if he might be allowed to watch as I attempt another upgrade to Leopard on the restored 10.4.10. He tells me he admires my intestinal fortitude for even attempting it.
03:45 28 October 2007: Darren watches as I eject and disconnect the external hard disk, bite my lip for the umpteenth time and close the DVD pod bay door and click on the install Leopard icon. We get to the fateful 'choose disk for installation' screen and this time, by the Power of all of the pests of the Apple tree the welcome GREEN ARROW magically appears over my internal drive. Being less trusting and more experienced than I was at 17:50 the previous evening, I click on options - the radio button beside the 'Upgrade will replace existing OS and no other files or data will be affected' is highlighted. I cross myself, throw a pinch of salt over my left shoulder onto Darren's uniform, apologize and click 'CONTINUE'. The DVD whirs and I pour Darren and myself a beer. We have several more and recount Mac upgrades past over the next 90 minutes as Leopard re-installs.
05:15 28 October 2007: While singing the third chorus of 'Eskimo Nell', Darren and I notice that Leopard is asking us whether or not we wish to sample its features. I throw three more pinches of salt over my right shoulder (being carefull to avoid Darren's uniform, which is now covered with beer stains and cracker crumbs) and click 'YES'. Leopard reboots and there as if by magic, is my old log-in screen, and then my desk top with all of the new Leopard widgets! All my data is still intact (although I do have to re-install about 12 applications because the licence key files have obviously gone missing in the clone/migration assistant exercise. Darren shakes my hand and we embrace. My wife enters the study in her dressing gown with a quizzical look on her face, possibly wondering why I am hugging a beer stained policeman in uniform. I tell her that I will explain everything later.
05:30 28 October 2007: Darren bids me farewell and as we walk to his patrol car I retrieve another freshly dead mouse from the hen house and some twigs and give them to him with my best wishes. 'Take care', he says with a tear in his eye, 'I'd better go back to the station and clock off.'
'You too', I reply, 'Come on Honey, it's time I got some sleep, a Leopard can't change its spots! You don't mind if I leave Tiger on your Mac for a few more months do you?'

If you are unwilling to backup your data regardless of update/upgrade, I have no sympathy for you.
If you recall, the panther to tiger update was also no picnic. And it just makes good sense to backup all of your pictures/data anyway - regardless.
That in mind, your story is witty and disarming! Bravo on the final success.
I have upgrades/clean installed 3 macs with no issues on each. Maybe my luck <shrug>

  • Why I am buying a new MacBook Pro now, but, first, any major issues?

With the delay of Ivy Bridge, and with my personal view that the next generation of MacBook Pro notebooks will be dropping FireWire 800 to service a better design, I have decided to purchase a new MacBook Pro now.
I just cannot imagine the new notebooks having a FireWire or Ethernet port, as they add too much thickness.
While I keep MacBook Pros for up to 4-years, I think this new purchase will have to be a transition computer, as the next model will probably be too irresitable. Having the option of then moving my data via Thunderbolt to Thunderbolt (Tarket Disk Mode) is very appealing too.
So, any issues with the current line?
Specifically, has anyone had a screen flicker issue or anything else major?
Would anyone dare say Thunderbolt is unreliable?
I really appreciate any thoughts on this - Thank you!

I am so sorry, but you are dead wrong.
First, people get their problems resolved here quickly. A majority of the issues here are "Newbie" issues.
I have been a Mac user since 2007, and I have been on these forums since that time too. I have never once seen a horror story like the ones found on the Dell, Lenovo, and HP support forums that pop up on an hourly basis.
Read those forums, and you will get tears in your eyes.
Anytime I have called Apple or visited an Apple Store, they have treated me like a God.
Apple hardware is bullet proof made of the best materials on the planet. A MacBook Pro is far stronger and more durable than any ThinkPad, Dell Precision, or HP Elitebook.
Just open up a MacBook Pro to look at the insides as compared to the disaster zones of the aforementioned PCs.
Oh.... and no bloody stickers on MY notebook.
    Everything just works.
Little things come up, but they are always solved.
Now, add programs like Joint Venture, and heaven is a place on earth.
No PC company comes close to treating their customers the way Apple has treated me since 07.
Apple has earned my business for life.
Right now, I can schedule a call with Apple - What PC company does that?
Apple = Unequaled products, service, and support. No PC company can come close to any of those three traits.
    PS
And none of those PC forums have people like Kappy, Eww, Bee, Niel, iVmichael, sig, Etresoft, (yourself), and all the other fine members of this community that make it such a pleasure...

9:23 PM YvetteNBrown: I loved Joel in that mascara and eyeliner… I told him it was sexy! Apologies to his wife!
9:23 PM Guest-89: You're my absolute favourite in the show! What were your first thoughts on the whole concept when you first heard/saw it?
9:23 PM YvetteNBrown: Thank you! I thought it was really a great script and was hoping and praying I'd get to be a part!
9:24 PM Guest-87: Yvette, do you know what the plan for next semester is?
9:24 PM YvetteNBrown: We don't know yet. We won't find out until late July when we get that script!
9:24 PM Guest-28: How much time did it take to film season 3?
9:24 PM YvetteNBrown: We filmed season three from late July until late February. 80 hour weeks… yikers!
9:24 PM Guest-105: Who's your favorite cast member?
9:25 PM YvetteNBrown: No matter who you ask this question to in the cast the answer will undoubtedly be Danny Pudi! He's the BEST
9:26 PM Guest-18: Totally loving the shows right now!!!!! Love hearing you sing. Do you guys ever randomly sing when waiting to shoot?
9:25 PM YvetteNBrown: To Guest-18 We sing all the time! We make up songs that only make us laugh. If you heard them you would find us all very strange!

9:27 PM Guest-132: Since its community college and thats usually over in 2 years. Will you guys ever graduate?
9:28 PM YvetteNBrown: I now folks who go to community college long after two years so we could be at Greendale FOREVER! Leonard and Pierce surely have been
9:28 PM Guest-19: After watching the finale, it seems as if the finale was meant to act as a series finale if the show was not renewed. What were the emotions like on set while filming that episode?
9:28 PM YvetteNBrown: It was a bit bittersweet. We had faith we'd be back but we were gratified in knowing that even if we weren't Dan and the writers had given us a fitting finale.
9:29 PM Guest-122: Hey Yvette, @GREENDALE_LOVE from Twitter here. Thank you so much for your amazingness to us fans. How the heck do you ever manage your Twitter account??? We're always bugging you
9:29 PM YvetteNBrown: LOL! You guys are great! For all of your loveliness there's only one or two bad apples and as you now if you follow my feed, they're politely reprimanded and blocked and kindness is restored!
9:29 PM Guest-112: I heard you once had a contract w/Motown. Do you ever think about going back to singing?
9:30 PM YvetteNBrown: I think about it sometimes. But my motown/Biv 10 days were back when I was a teenager. If the right opportunity came about I'd sing a little ditty or two. Until then singing as SHirley is enough for me!
9:30 PM Guest-69: How excited are you about the 13 episodes NBC ordered for the fall?? When I found it was like a really early Christmas gift!
9:31 PM YvetteNBrown: We were OVERJOYED! It was Christmas for us too! And we're really excited about the move to Friday's. It's a more relaxing time slot over there! LOL!
9:31 PM Guest-79: Hi Yvette!! I own Season 1&2 on DVD and all the commentary and special features are hilarious. I love that you guys include that stuff. When does Season 3 come out??
9:32 PM YvetteNBrown: Thanks! We have a great time doing the commentaries! Season 3 will be out later this summer! And you can pre-order it on BestBuy.com…the wording may be weird but the link works! Also seasons 1 & 2 are on sale right now! Gotta love Best Buy!!!
9:33 PM Jason-BBY: You can preorder Season 3 now at http://bit.ly/CommunitySeason3
9:33 PM Guest-149: I've always thought Shirley was just a great character, but in season 3 she has been especially awesome! Are there any Shirley moments or episodes that you would classify as your favorite? Lame question, I know, but it's what I thought of. Thanks for being so awesome and you and all the cast are definitely role models to me! Keep being great.
9:34 PM YvetteNBrown: Not lame at all! I love EVERY opportunity to work with Malcolm-Jamal Warner and also working with Joel McHale! I also enjoy delving into Shirley's darker side. She's fiesty… and SCARY!
9:34 PM Guest-94: Thanks for taking the time to do this, Yvette! We're all really excited that Community has been renewed for a fourth season, but are you at all worried that it won't get a back 9 episodes?
9:36 PM YvetteNBrown: Guest -94… stay in the moment! 13 episodes is great! let's rejoice in that. If the back 9 is meant to be, it will be. Lots of viewers and high ratings will assure it, though… so Communies/Human Beings… tell two friends about the move to Friday at 8:30 in the fall, will ya?
9:35 PM Guest-42: I find that I keep saying "That's nice!" like Shirley -- have you picked up any of your character's mannerisms/sayings?
9:35 PM YvetteNBrown: LOL! "That's Nice" is actually a Yvette saying. I ad-libbed it in the pilot as Shirley and it sorta stuck. So I'd say yes… sorta? To that question.
9:36 PM Guest-30: Who's the wildest on set?
9:37 PM YvetteNBrown: Donald Glover, HANDS DOWN!!!
9:37 PM Guest-132: I love bestbuy! How often do you go to bestbuy & What's your favorite section to browse in Best Buy?
9:37 PM YvetteNBrown: I go to Best Buy all the time! I just bought a fridge and TV there… on triple points weekend! SCORE!!!
9:37 PM Guest-124: Community is now known worldwide. How do you feel about that? (kisses from Brazil, by the way)
9:38 PM YvetteNBrown: Kisses TO Brazil! I think it's awesome! I hope to visit some of the other countries "Community" is playing in someday!
9:38 PM Guest-102: Hi Yvette, thanks so much for what you do! That finale was excellent. What other projects are you working on right now? Anything in the works for the future with Dan Harmon or the other cast members of Community?
9:39 PM YvetteNBrown: Thanks so much! I just finished working on the "Percy Jackson" sequel! Which was Awesome! And I still do a voice on the "Pound Puppies" Cartoon on the Hub network! Listing everyone else's projects would be TOO lengthy! They're all even more busy than me! Talented folks!!
9:39 PM Guest-63: Yvette, how do you get into character? Do you do anything in particular?
9:40 PM YvetteNBrown: I think of my mom and Miss Piggy because those are the two folks I patterned Shirley's voice and/or mannerisms after. I think I owe them both money now!
Guest-205: Hello, you were so amazing in tonight's episodes! The last one brought tears to my eyes! I was wondering, with which member of the cast do you have the most fun working in scenes?
YvetteNBrown: I love them all for different reasons. Gillian (Stink) because she's SO present. She's a very generous actor. Ali because she's just so good at everything. Danny because he's pure love. Donald, Ken & Jim because they're pure fun and Joel because of our awesome sexual chemistry! LOL! Oh, and Chevy because he's a legend.
Guest-146: Does the cast improv any lines? If so who's do you like the most? Great job this season! Season 3 is my favorite.
YvetteNBrown: We all improv from time to time. But Donald's make it in the show most often… followed by maybe Jim's.
Guest-196: The show does many parodies of famous movies and TV shows. What favorite movie/TV would you like to parody next season?
YvetteNBrown: I'd LOVE a muppets parody!
Guest-180: Do you know when you start filming season 4? I love the show! And Shirley!
YvetteNBrown: If things are the same as the previous three seasons, we should go back to begin season four the last week of July.
Guest-122: What has been your favorite episode of Community so far?
    YvetteNBrown: Law and Order
renanwho: Hey Yvette! You're doing an amazing job on Community. I also loved you on Drake & Josh! Do you listen to Childish Gambino? If you do, what's your favorite song? Love from Brazil.
YvetteNBrown: Of course! Be Alone and any other song where Donald sings in falsetto. It's dreamy!
Guest-13: I just want to say thanks for following a journey that led you to be part of such a brilliant piece of work Community brings so much laughter into my life. You are amazing. Shirley is such a great character, and you bring so much lovely spirit to her. (We chatted a tiny bit previously about the group I started on Facebook "Keep Community on NBC") LOVE you guys! You are Streets Ahead in my book. -Korrie
    YvetteNBrown: Thanks Korrie! xoxo
Guest-87: Yvette, how do you feel about those Jeff/Shirey shippers?
YvetteNBrown: I think it's hilarious and never going to happen! LOL!
YvetteNBrown: Although that Joel is super cute and charming.
Guest-70: Why do you think it was important to do a Musical for this season's Christmas episode? What was it like to work on it?
YvetteNBrown: I think it was just something fun to do and Christmas was the best time. I think it was the goal of the writers to do "Glee" type episode at some point and season 3 was it! And we all had a ball filming it! everything was so festive
Guest-205: If you could be on any other TV show, currently airing or long gone, which would you pick?
    YvetteNBrown: That's easy… Cosby Show!
Guest-276: Hey Yvette you are a Christian woman like Shirley
YvetteNBrown: Yes, i am! Hopefully a bit less judgmental, though.
Guest-132: To piggyback off of Guest 42's question. Have you picked up on any of your costars mannerisms/sayings? If so who & what?
YvetteNBrown: I've started using chapstick and that's Danny's FAVORITE thing in the world next to his family.
Guest-146: I have to ask...do the ladies in the cast enjoy it when joel takes off his shirt? Or is it just me?
YvetteNBrown: Yes, we ladies enjoy it. And some of the guys do too, I suspect!
Guest-258: Do you have any awesome plans for the off season?
YvetteNBrown: I'm an awesome sleeper! So I look forward to sleeping a LOT!
Guest-253: I'm sorry for not joining the chat earlier, I've been crying a lot thanks to the finale. How was shooting it, Yvette? Was it as emotional to you as it was for us? Hugs from Venezuela!
YvetteNBrown: Hello to Venezuela! I hope those were happy tears! Yes, the last day of every season has been emotional to some extent, but we always know that we'll see each other over hiatus…or when the show ultimately ends so it's not truly sad, sad. Just "See ya soon" sad.
Guest-124: How was it being such a badass in the pillow fight?
YvetteNBrown: I love when Shirley gets to show her RAGE! I don't know what that says about me. LOL!
Guest-312: who thought of the video game episode? that was GENIUS and so unlike anything else out there right now! love Community!!
YvetteNBrown: Dan Harmon was the genius behind that!
Guest-228: Any advice you could give to an aspiring actor such as myself? Garrett again.
YvetteNBrown: I wrote a long blog about breaking into the business on my website www.yvettenicolebrown.com and on facebook. Hope it helps!
Guest-27: If you could write an episode, what would you like to see the characters, especially Shirley, do?
YvetteNBrown: I'd write an episode where the girls get the work together. I miss the capers we used to get into in the first season.
Guest-307: I watch Community just because I want to see you acting, I love yoy since Drake & Josh! Helen (l) Hugs from Argentina!
YvetteNBrown: Hugs TO Argentina! Thank you, Sweetie! I had a blast working on Drake & Josh. I'm so glad you enjoyed our silliness. Those guys (cast/crew/staff) are family to me just like the Community gang!
Guest-102: Do know the tv show Twin Peaks from the 90s? I think Community could do a great parody/reference to that show. I'm sure Abed knows all about it. ;D
YvetteNBrown: Great Idea! I've heard fans have started figuring out which of us should play who. That'd be great!
Guest-82: As a Christian, I love how Community shows both the bad and good sides of learning to live out our faith. How do you think Shirley has grown as a Christian over the course of the show?
YvetteNBrown: I like that too. Lord knows Christians aren't perfect. I'd hate to play one that thought she was. LOL! Shirley has softened these past few seasons and learned how to love unconditionally the way God encourages.
Guest-63: When I went to Paramount Studios for a tour, you were nice enough to say hi to me and my friends! I want to thank you for that, definitely made my day! Love you as Shirly, you are absolutely hilarious!
YvetteNBrown: Aww, pumpkin! Thanks for that kind message! It was my pleasure! Hope you enjoyed the tour!
Guest-84: Yvette, I have to say, I always think you look great and snappy in your clothes, whether on the show or from your Twitter. It makes me feel better knowing larger ladies can rock the looks and that I shouldn't be afraid to either. The world needs more beautiful celebs like you. :'D
YvetteNBrown: LOL! Larger lady for the WIN!!! I'm literally chuckling at that description. Thank you. Sincerely!
xmen4ever8290: Do you know why the last episode of this season seemed like the series finale? It breaks my heart thinking that my favorite show is going to end! Would you ever do a Community movie?
YvetteNBrown: Basically we didn't know what the future held for the show. Dan and the writers wanted to make sure you guys had a satisfying end if it was the end. But happily….blessedly… it wasn't the end! YAY! And sure I'd do a community movie!
Guest-87: Yvette, who would be your ideal guest star for next season?
YvetteNBrown: I've been hoping for Sandra Bullock. But after Malcolm-Jamal Warner and Betty White I don't wanna be greedy.
Guest-269: Hey Yvette! Follow you on Twitter and you seem like a genuinely nice person. Love you in Community and loved you in Drake and Josh! Do you ever see either of them anymore?
YvetteNBrown: I see the Drake & Josh gang all the time. A lot of them are working on iCarly and Victorious. And I visit those sets all the time.
Guest-316: Greetings from the UK! What has been your favourite musical scene in the show thus far? I loved the "Finally Be Fine" number from the start of season 3. - Ash
YvetteNBrown: I loved "Sensible Night" from season one! I thought the lyrics Dan Harmon wrote were hilarious!
Guest-243: Hi Yvette, it's Taylah here! . You know I was a big defender of the Jeff and Shirley "evil friendship of awesome", and I was SO HAPPY to see it making a comeback this year! It feels like this season rather than being evil together they kinda bring the best out of each other and understand each other a lot (beautiful scene between the two of them in this season finale!) Have you liked this shift on their relationship or do you prefer when they're a bit meaner together?
YvetteNBrown: Hey Taylah!!! I love the shift because it means we get to play together more often… it took this long for us to have more episodes together because we were so TOXIC before! LOL!
YvetteNBrown: NEWSFLASH! Joel just tweeted taht "Six Seasons And A Movie" is trending worldwide! Thanks to those of you who made that happen!!!
YvetteNBrown: Further newsflash… sorry for typos!
Guest-122: Did you ever dream that Community would be such a big thing?
YvetteNBrown: I hope that folks would love to watch our shenanigans but I never dreamed we would be blessed with so many folks that would don felt goatees, sing in country-wide flash mobs and vote in online polls until their fingers bled. That's a blessing I never could have imagined and I'm so grateful for each and every one of you guys! Communies ROCK!!!
Guest-374: Yvette, you are amazing. i truly love you and your character and you have an amazing voice. everything youve done for to show is truly inspiring. Community will be remebered as the greatest, most ambitious show in TV history. you wont believe the amount of fans the show have here in Israel. now, if i may ask, do you think the show appeal to a certain crowd? and besides, what is next for you? thank you for everything.
YvetteNBrown: Thanks for all of that and HELLO to Israel! I don't think the show appeal to a certain crowd. I think every type of person and group is loved and made fun of on community. That makes it a show for EVERYONE! When everyone's a misfit, no one is!
Guest-146: I love what the ladies wear on the show! Any chance at getting a clothing sponsor...who wouldn't run out and buy britta's leather jacket!...ok well I would, I'd run.
YvetteNBrown: Be forewarned, Britta wears a lot of Prada! LOL! Most of my clothes are from anthropologie, Rachel Pally or Macy's. Alison wears a lot of Urban Outfitters on the show. Happy shopping!
avadakedalek: Hey! I love your work, Yvette! You are so beautiful inside and out! I am so glad that I get this chance to talk to you! It is such an honor! I'm so glad to know that you still hang out with the Drake and Josh cast! I was wondering how your faith is affected with fame?
YvetteNBrown: Thanks! Nice to talk to you too! My faith guides my career. Every decision is filtered through that lens. I want to make good decisions and be a part of work that uplifts and makes folks happy.
Guest-299: What's been your favorite of the deens crazy costumes?
YvetteNBrown: I love the "Can-can-cancelled" outfit! He looked lovely!
Guest-285: Any pranks you've pulled or been a victim of on set? I love you!!
YvetteNBrown: Donald has been the biggest prankster. The season 2 DVD outtakes show him doing an entire take of a scene with his bum exposed. Everyone knew except me. And they were all waiting for me… Prudy McPrude…to notice.
Guest-294: Yvette, you're awesome and I love you and everyone on Community! Who's your favorite couple pairing on the show?
YvetteNBrown: The Dean and Jeff for sure!
Guest-149: As sort of an addition to the question on religion, I just wanna say Shirley as a character, and you (based on stuff I've seen on Twitter) are very inspirational to someone who struggles with faith and how to reconcile it to my personal beliefs and stuff like that. So thanks for that. Any advice to someone who struggles with the occasional crisis of faith? -Tyler
YvetteNBrown: Just be still and know. That's biblical. I've known God to always be peace. Chase peace above all things and you will always find God.
    YvetteNBrown: God bless you, Tyler!
Guest-269: As a fellow former Midwesterner, do you get back to Ohio very often?
YvetteNBrown: I do! I try to get back to Cleveland at least two times a year. I was just back last week speaking to the kids at my old high school, Warrensville Heights High! I had a blast!!!
avadakedalek: Oh. my brother told me to ask you if you would marry him? He's loved you since Drake & Josh. Oh boy.
YvetteNBrown: Sure. As long as he's over 30.
Guest-27: All the way from Australia, Were you surprised at the cult status Community has reached around the world?
YvetteNBrown: Hi TO Australia! Yes, I continue to be SHOCKED by it! Sidebar: I hope to visit Australia someday… it's one of my big dreams.
Guest-358: What was your favorite part of these last three episodes of community?
YvetteNBrown: I don't wanna be spoiler-rific… because some folks in the chat haven't seen all three episodes yet. But the 'heist" episode was a favorite to shoot.
Guest-122: What are your favorite shows to watch other than the ones you've been on? Haha
YvetteNBrown: I love Scandal, Revenge, Blue Bloods, Veep, Girls, Once Upon A Time, 30 Rock, Parks & Rec, Hot in Cleveland… I could go on and on...
Guest-110: Hey Yvette. What has been your biggest moment since you've been in Hollywood? I'm sure there's many, but what comes to mind right away? <3 Mia M P.S. I'm loving all this love you're getting from all over the world! AWESOME
YvetteNBrown: I think going home to talk to the kids at my old school because it meant I had accomplished something big enough for them to have me back and for the kids to listen. Going back to speak was something I dreamed about when I was still in school. What an honor to be able to share your journey with the next generation. There's nothing like it.
    Guest-30: Are you tired?
YvetteNBrown: Right now? Or in general. Right now I'm good. Thanks for asking! When we're filming 16 hour days 5 days a week… YES!
Guest-124: Okay, I need to know this: I know you all are amazing actors, but HOW can you keep a straight face when Donald/Troy is crying/freaking out? I wouldn't be able to do it, so congratulations on that lol (and on everything, really)
YvetteNBrown: Who says we do? Often the take that makes it on the air isn't the best take, it's just the one they could use. And not just Donald. Jim Rash and Ken Jeong have been known to crack us up too. The tag where the dean is singing to Troy and Abed they had to cut away from each of us before we laughed when they edited it. I'm still almost lasting in my take.
Guest-13: Do agree with Gillian that it is almost impossible to keep a straight face when Jim Rash is delivering his lines??
YvetteNBrown: Yep! Jim studied with the Groundlings he is comedy GENIUS! No telling what he will say or do.
Guest-294: Who is your favorite musical artist? And, on a random note, how do celebrities feel about dating fans?
YvetteNBrown: Are you asking me out? Are you over 30? tee hee… favorite musical artist of all time? That's hard. SO many Gladys Knight, Ledisi, Switch, New Edition, The O'jays, Jason Mraz, Lauryn Hill, Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Cece Winans, Donna Summer… who we just lost today (may she rest in peace). So many!
Guest-269: I see from IMDB that you have had a lot of guest starring roles on television shows. Any role in particular your favorite or is there one that stands out to you?
YvetteNBrown: The one I'm playing now: Shirley!
Guest-146: what was it like on set after Jim won the oscar? And how do you feel about the show being shut out at the emmy's?
YvetteNBrown: I was overjoyed for Jim! So well deserved. And I think everything happens for a reason. I'd love for the show to be recognized in some way by the awards system… but with the fans we have, asking for awards on top of that love seems a bit greedy.
Guest-335: will there be more andre?
YvetteNBrown: I hope so! But Malcolm has his own show on BET, that's why we only had him for one episode this year. If possible, I hope we can have him back next season. I love when he's on set!
Guest-412: Yvette, I remember hearing you say that everyone know's its "#sixseasonsandamovie" But you wanted it to be "Four Seasons & A Graduation" Why is that?
YvetteNBrown: I didn't say I wanted that, I said I'd be happy with that. Danny and I were filming a "please save our show" video for USA Today and that's just something silly we came up with as a consolation prize. Like "C'mon! At least let us graduate!" LOL! It was seriously said. Either way, whatever is meant to be, will be.
avadakedalek: Are you feeling any better? I know you had a crazy day with twitter today... I was worried! Don't let anyone bring you down! God bless you, beautiful You are such an inspiration, and I know I said this already but a great role model to women like me!
YvetteNBrown: Aww, thanks! I am much better. And please know that no matter what I tweet I'm always okay. It's just twitter. I just don't understand rudeness… especially from strangers. It's just easier to be nice. My tweets are meant to just remind folks of that. And it's my goal to always be kind when I get them TOLD! Lol!
Guest-180: I remember seeing you in "The Office". What was it like to work with Rainn Wilson? Sidebar: Community is the best TV show I've ever seen.
YvetteNBrown: Rainn was such a generous actor. He's super funny but his gift is that he's not selfish. He wants everyone else to get as many laughs as he does. And that's not always the case with super funny folks. I loved working with him and Steve Carrell good folks!
Guest-405: Greetings from the Philippines! I love you. I love the show. We're still on season 1 and 2 here though. 1st season in the morning, and at night. Believe it or not, I find myself saying "Thats nice" almost everyday. What was the most difficult thing you did in the entire series and why? - @jasonreyes00
YvetteNBrown: Hello TO the Philippines! Thank you! The most difficult thing to do is to keep a straight face when my cast mates are SO hilarious. I have ruined MANY takes with giggling!
Guest-319: Your singing voice in the holiday episode a few years back was extraordinary. Any chance we will get to hear an album from you?
YvetteNBrown: Aww, Thanks! I really only sing now in the shower, in my car and in the pew at church unless an acting role calls for it. So though I'd never say never, it'd have to be a word from God that got me behind a mic professionally again. LOL!
Guest-122: What is something random about you that not many people know?
YvetteNBrown: I love puzzles. They are so relaxing! Whenever I get a few days of uninterrupted freem time I'm doing a puzzle. Corny, I know! LOL!
Guest-349: Hey Yvette! love Shirley and the show. Malcolm-Jamal Warner was very cool in the episode he did for this season. Question. What is your all-time favorite episode of the Cosby Show?
YvetteNBrown: The one with Gordon Gartrelle shirt! Denise tells Theo to tuck it in and he says thru clenched teeth "It's tucked into my SOCKS!" Comedy GOLD!
Guest-400: Loved Shirley in facial hair. Again. Are you afraid the writers might find reasons to put Shirley in a beard the same way they put Jim Rash in bizarre costumes. And how about a Best Buy kiosk at Greendale.
YvetteNBrown: I think I make a fine looking man just as Jim makes a pretty woman. That's the reasoning behind it… I think? LOL! And a Best Buy kiosk at Greendale would be awesome as long as I got to use all the goods they sold for free! LOL!
bricatfree: Love you and love the show! (Side note: Could you tell Donald that I'm in love with him?! Hahaha) Do you think Annie and Jeff should be together (eventually)?
YvetteNBrown: Consider it done! LOL! And I think Greendale is more about the relationship of the whole study group with each other. Aside from that any pairing is in the hands and minds of Dan and the writers. I have no preference.
Guest-14: First, thank you for representing the BBW out in the world. I'd marry you if I could. Second, any hopes on Malcolm Jamal Warner returning next season?
YvetteNBrown: Are you over 30? Seriously, thanks! And I hope Malcolm will be back. We'll see!
Guest-124: I would like to thank you for being so sweet to your fans! It's amazing that you're taking your time to answer our questions, I wish every celebrity were like you! Lots of sucess to you and the show, because you both deserve it.
YvetteNBrown: Aww, shucks! That was sweet! It's the least I can do for all you guys have given to us! It's not a small thing that you love and support us as you do! We're all so grateful. A Q&A is nothing compared to THAT! God Bless!
Guest-334: Any hidden talents you have?
YvetteNBrown: I can curl my tongue like 3 or 4 different ways. And my left wrist was broken so I can bend my left thumb in directions it really shouldn't go. How's that?
Guest-233: What's your favorite costume you've had on? also what's your favorite that a castmate wore? Thanks for a wonderful season!
YvetteNBrown: My favorite is "Sam Jackson/Jules" from Pulp Fiction. Of the others… Gillian's (Stink's) squirrel costume from halloween season one is pretty stinkin' cute… see what I did there? Stinkin' cute!
Guest-79: If you had to go back to college and could only bring one member of the cast with you, who would it be?
YvetteNBrown: Danny. Because he's cuddly. And he'd sing songs and dance for me when I was stressed out by classes. He's like a toy!
Guest-319: What's one assumption people make about you that you wish they wouldn't?
YvetteNBrown: That because I'm kind that I'm dumb, weak or foolish. I promise I'm NONE of those things.
Guest-30: Did you have dinner yet? Anyway, love to you, the show, and every contributor to the show, and I hope you have a good night.
YvetteNBrown: Mom, is that you? tee hee. Yes, I had dinner before I started the chat. I was well fed and well rested before I started the chat. LOL! Thanks for the message and I hope you have a good night, too!
Guest-269: When you mentioned puzzles earlier, did you mean like crosswords ones or jigsaw ones?
YvetteNBrown: Jigsaw, baby! Thought Crosswords and Suduku are fun too. But Jigsaw puzzles are my thing!
Guest-294: Yvette, I just want to thank you so much for doing this. You seem like such a genuinely nice person and the fact that you are taking time out of your day to talk to fans is awesome. Thank you <3
    YvetteNBrown: My pleasure, darlin!
Guest-371: Love Community and You! Do you know what's going on the outtakes this season? i really love seening how you guys interacting and play with each other
YvetteNBrown: Aww, love you back! And we never know what the cameras have caught until we see the bloopers on the DVD when you guys do… unless it's something that needs our approval…like Donald's bum being out. They sent that to me in advance to make sure I was okay with that being on DVD.
Guest-79: Who messes up their lines the most while shooting?
YvetteNBrown: we all are guilty of that. But Ken Jeong probably makes himself laugh the most, thus messing up his own lines. LOL!
Guest-319: If Shirley was given her own spinoff, what would you want that to look like?
YvetteNBrown: Shirley and Andre raising their kids. I bet that household is dysfunctional! LOL!
Guest-16: Do you think you guys could pull off a live episode with all of the off-camera shenanigans from Ken, Donald, Jim, and the rest of the goofball cast?
YvetteNBrown: We would never survive it! We all laugh TOO much at each other as it is. A live episode would be 22 minutes of all of going "Sorry. Okay. Pull it together. Here we go. We can DO this! Focus. And a one two three…" it would NEVER work! But that said, I'd be game to try and mess up LIVE repeatedly for all you guys to see! LOL!
Guest-400: When I watch episodes for the 2nd or 3rd time I look for things the cast does in the background. There's usually a funny action or something bizarre going on. Is that written in the script or is it something the cast and the director work out on set.
YvetteNBrown: It's usually something we're doing to make someone else who's on camera laugh. Like "Chang tongue" that Ken does. He does that in the background of numerous scenes just to see if we'll notice. It's on full display in the courtroom in the Law and Order episode.
Guest-363: Hi, Hey, what's up, who's you're favourite character on the show outside of the study group? I love Garrett & Vaughn was great as well.
YvetteNBrown: I really like Vicki, played by my buddy Danielle. She's fiesty and unpredictable. And she's a perfect example of how our show works. If you're on once you're almost sure to return. Greendale is like that. Danielle had one line in the election episode and has done like 10 episodes since. I also love Leonard. That Richard Erdman is a national treasure! Charley Koontz who plays Fat Neil is a favorite too. We've been blessed with our guest stars and co-stars! Ooh and Luke Youngblood as Magnitude… i could go on and on! Wait, I did! LOL!
Guest-334: Which place would you most want to go for a dream vacation, and who would you take with you?
YvetteNBrown: I've always wanted to go to Hawaii, Paris or Australia. And I'd probably take my mom especially if it was out of the country because she has a passport that's stamp-less right now and that HAS to be fixed!
Guest-418: Which is you favorite Halloween episode?
YvetteNBrown: I really loved the ghost stories from this season. It was a lot of fun shooting all the vignettes and we got to hear "Daybreak" by Michael Haggis for the first time. And Heaven knows that's been the gift that keeps on giving!
Guest-390: Hi Yvette! I love Community! What is a typical day on the set like?
YvetteNBrown: Starts at 5;30am for the girls on Monday and goes for about 16 hours with lots of laughs and foolishness in between! That's the short version.
Guest-196: If you could make a Shirley sandwich. What would be on it? Thanks again for doing this!!!! Six seasons and a movie!!!!
YvetteNBrown: Pepper or Jerk turkey by boarshead. spicy hummus on potato bread. Simple.
Guest-233: Thinking of doing a squirrel costume like Gillian's. Any advice?
YvetteNBrown: Get a wonderful costume designer like our fabulous Sabrina to get it made for you!
Guest-412: What's your favorite Shirley moment on the show. And what do you think is the best thing about Shirley's personality?
YvetteNBrown: Any moment with Andre. And I love that Shirley is so loving and forgiving. She's truly a good egg… flaws and all.
Guest-426: Has being Shirley ruined "that's nice" for you?
YvetteNBrown: Not at all. I actually just said it while I was driving the other day when someone let someone else merge
Guest-319: Love you, Yvette! What's your favorite food?
    YvetteNBrown: Bacon!
Guest-149: I know it's not a question, but I'm probably going to have to leave soon, so I just wanted to send my gratitude =) Jumping on the bandwagon here a little bit to thank you for everything. For your time here today, and for all the awesome stuff on the show, and just for being awesome! #sixseasonsandamovie
    YvetteNBrown: Thanks for chatting!
Guest-180: Are your fellow cast members still making fun of you during the DVD commentaries? Have you heard if there will be Blu-ray releases? Thanks so much for talking to us!
YvetteNBrown: Always! And we don't know about a blu-ray release yet. Fingers crossed!
Guest-269: The fact you said jigsaw puzzles makes me love you even more! Are you a 1000 piece gal, or more or less pieces?
YvetteNBrown: I do 1000 pieces if I've really got time to focus. But 750 is my usual.
Guest-416: Why do you call Gillian Jacobs stink?
    YvetteNBrown: I'll never tell!
Guest-196: What is the one food you CANNOT live without?
    YvetteNBrown: potatoes
Guest-370: If you could be another character on the show (man or woman), who would you want to play and why?
YvetteNBrown: Probably Troy. He has a beautiful mind!
avadakedalek: I love how Community is so relatable! I am a weird combination of Shirley and Annie for sure, but I know that everyone can find a little bit of themselves in all of the characters. I saw in a clip that you know about the fan art and fiction from the fans? Do you have a favorite piece that you have seen?
YvetteNBrown: I know about the fan fic, but I don't read it. I'm saving all that for when the show ends and I miss the Greendale gang. As for the fan art, it is AMAZING! I see it all and I try to retweet as much of it as I can!
Guest-319: What lasting legacy do you want to leave as a person?
YvetteNBrown: Kindness, joy and faith. If folks thought of me as a person who did her best to embody those three things I would feel like my life was well spent.
Guest-387: Howdy, it's Chels725 from Twitter. Just wanted so say the eps were great tonight & brought me to tears! Congrats on a wonderful season.
    YvetteNBrown: Thanks, Chels!
Guest-294: How did the whole "Daybreak" thing start?
YvetteNBrown: I think they just looked for a smooth jazz kinda song for the scene and "Daybreak" won out. That it's been featured over and over is a testament to how much we, the cast, love it. Every other time you've heard it, I don't think it's been scripted.
    Guest-82: Favorite animal?
YvetteNBrown: I was born in August, so I've gotta go with lions.
Guest-335: will you and troy have an arc together?
YvetteNBrown: Gosh, I hope so. I've been begging for that for three seasons. The only time Troy and Shirley have spoken to each other away from the group is in the first season paintball battle. How crazy is that?!
Guest-244: Congratulations on another wonderful season Yvette. Any idea if we'll see a season 3 soundtrack? I'd love to hear full versions of the songs from the Christmas/Glee episode.
YvetteNBrown: Good question. I don't actually know. But that would be great! I'm rooting for it!
Guest-376: What's your ideal ending for Shirley? Love the show!
YvetteNBrown: A degree she's proud of and a loving family life.
Guest-334: What do you like to do in your free time? So cool chatting with you. Coolcoolcool!
YvetteNBrown: Nap! And spend time with family and friends. The simple things!
Guest-79: Who do you think was the funniest guest star this season?
YvetteNBrown: Way too many to name. But John Hodgmand sticks out as a favorite!
Guest-418: Loving your tweeter feeds. How was the dialogue like during you Dungeon & Dragons episode, did you make stuff up?
YvetteNBrown: No, it was all scripted! But we did have fun acting out what they wrote!
Guest-449: which character from the show could the world most use more people like?
YvetteNBrown: I'd say Shirley, of course. She's very loving and wants what's fair for everybody.
    YvetteNBrown: But I'm biased… lol!

  • [CS4] ReferenceError: Error #1065: Variable {ClassName}  is not defined

A few days ago I decided to give Matrix3D a try, so I changed my publish setting to target flash player 10, and just to be safe, I hit the test movie magic combo (ctrl-enter) and got the dreaded Error #1065 all over the screen, so, ok, I thought I'll pass on Matrix3D for now, flipped the publish setting back to flash player 9 and I was a happy camper again.
Just now, publishing for flash player 9 fails with the same result. This happens _right after_ a successful build, I moved a few movie clips around on the stage, re-test, and got myself an Error #1065 wall of text in the output window.
Funny fact: this only happens with "test movie" (ctrl-enter). If I "debug" (ctrl-shift-enter) the movie, it compiles and runs just fine with no problem whatsoever.
All the class has been tested to work just before the incident.
Has anyone got this problem before?

    Just an update here:
I copied the entire library of my fla and put it in a fresh
fla file. My original fla has nothing on the main timeline so I
figured I'd just rebuild the thing.
So, upon compiling the first time in it's new fresh file, I
    get this compiler error:
, Line 1: 5005: Unknown error optimizing byte code.
Good. No longer do my symbols cause Reference Errors, I
thought to myself. After pursuing this error on the forums, I
gathered I just need to restart the flash ide. I did so, and went
    to rebuild the fresh fla...
One single line in the output window:
ReferenceError: Error #1065: Variable ComponentShim is not
    defined.
After wiping the tears from my eyes, I've come to post here
again in hopes someone can help me.
Here is my directory structure and names of files:

  • Windows XP and OS X 10.5.2 file sharing

    Hello,
I want to be able to transfer files between my Dell PC and Mac. With my limited knowledge on these things, I was able to connect the PC to the Mac (via "Map Network Drive"). Also, the Mac recognizes my Dell PC (it is listed under "Shared" in Mac HD), but when I select the PC the connection fails. Two things are bothering me about this: 1) When I click "Connect to Server" I am able to access the shared folder on the PC, 2) The Mac is able to connect and share with a Dell Laptop with no problem.
Any suggestions? Thank you in advance for your help.
    -Johnny

    Johnny-
I have a Dell 4500 (P4) and a PowerBook-G4 and have always found filesharing to be a bit "quirky" (as in, "Today it works, tomorrow, it don't ;-)). I am also at 10.5.2.
To start, I can communicate both ways now--without mapping drives--and after trying everything in these forums with varying success, I only got full two-way sharing when I TURNED SIMPLE FILESHARING ON on the Dell!
Okay, while I marvel at the elegance of some peoples' solution here, I can offer offer several settings I'm having success with, without knowing whether they are are all necessary. But with all the aggravation associated with networking since Leopard, I assume you'll take it if it works.
Not exact chronological order, but close...
I tried a tip I read and set up a Sharing-Only "Guest" account ON THE MAC. First, via the "System Preferences->Sharing->Check File Sharing, click on OPTIONS, and then "via SAMBA" for the Mac-to-Dell communication. Note: When you do that you will be checking your main user account name as the shared account.
Alright, over to Mac's User Accounts (in System Preferences). There I set up a user called "Guest" and gave it "SHARING ONLY" status. I remember reading that this "sharing-only" Guest user should be given the SAME LOGIN PASSWORD as your own Mac account AND that you should give this account ADMINISTRATIVE status. Hey, I did it. It works. I will leave it to others to explain why this might lead to your eventual death by parasitic dysentery!
Over these many years of trying to get my Dell and Mac to make nice, I also heard that giving your Dell account and your Mac account the same password is also "a good thing."
    Moving right along ...
On the Dell, I used to hear about turning off the Guest account, but then "enabling it via the Terminal"--I mean, what's up with that?? Far as I can see, you just have to check one thing about the guest account on the Dell.
In Terminal on the Dell--Ooops, Excusez-moi, svp! At the "Command Prompt" , type "net user guest" ("without the quotes" yada, yada) and hit Return. It should spew out some info on the Guest account. ONLY ONE VALUE MATTERS: About 1/4 of the way down, look for the "Active" property (left-hand column) and make sure it says "YES" to its right. If you haven't turned off your guest account, it should.
But just in case it doesn't, Type: "net user guest /active:yes" (I could have sworn that "active=yes" used to work ... oh well) and then hit Return. Windows should respond with "Command completed successfully" (which, of course, Windows would display even if the command did absolutely nothing!). Then again type "net user guest" and be sure "Active" equals "YES."
    We're almost there.
BIGGIE: I could only make all of this work when I assigned STATIC IP ADDRESSES to each computer on the home network (Linksys BEFSR41_v2 and Linksys WAP54G_v1). Of course, since Leopard/10.5 I have also had to convert to Zoroastrianism to make Airport stop doing all the incredibly mean and spiteful things that everyone else is writing about. Plus, I've had to put the wireless access point so freaking close to the Powerbook that I can actually unplug the access point and connect the Ethernet right to the PowerBook! But then the wire runs "all the way across the living room"--which my wife believes just isn't appropriate. BUT IT ALL WORKS! (The marriage and the network.)
Johnny, at the Dell I just went to "My Network Places," "Add Network Place", ignore that screen that "pretends" to be browsing for I-have-no-idea-what, then press NEXT (?) and for the name of the server type:
\\<the Powerbook's IP address>\<the FULL NAME of your Mac user account>
    For me that's "\\192.168.1.100\Paul Revere"
and when you press NEXT, Windows converts what you entered into the name it intends to assign to the Powerbook server and allows you to modify it.
Funny thing? If you set up that "share-only" Guest account on the Mac, you can substitute "Guest" for your username. Hopefully someone will chime in and explain what the heck is going on here. Maybe one's better? I use one on each of two computers.
Then, when you double-click that beautiful yellow thingy with your Mac's name below it, Voila!, you see all the shares you (hopefully!) set up over in "System Preferences->Sharing" (which is another whole lesson, I'm afraid--but I bet you've got that down already).
LAST THING: Well, not really. I want to say I was only kidding about having to convert to Zoroastrianism for this to work (Gawd, I hope there aren't really any Zoroastrianists (?!) still around, in which case I sincerely apologize and meant no disrespect!) NOW the LAST THING (really!): In Leopard you probably already know that you have to enter the Windows/Samba "Workgroup" name in the WINS tab at "System Preferences->Network->Advanced button->WINS tab." BUT, DON'T FORGET TO TAP APPLY WHEN YOU GET BACK OUT TO THE NETWORK PANEL or everything you did at Advanced->WINS won't "take."
Then on the Powerbook, I just click Shared in the Sidebar, double-click my Dell's icon, and -- only the first time -- I enter a username and password ("Save to my ..."). And here's the real username versus Guest issue again: If the Dell is set up like mine, Guest WILL (should) work. If not, enter the full name of the Windows user account--the passwords will all be the same. Then the Finder window will fill with all of the shared folders on your Dell. It brings tears to my eyes every time! (I think my wife's secretly contacting calling a shrink ;-)).
Johnny, on the Dell I just go to "My Network Places," double-click on "Entire Network" and then on "Microsoft Windows Network." A second or two later that blue tripod-like icon appears with my workgroup name below it (magic!!), I double click it and then I see the computer I'm sitting at (very useful), my Powerbook, and any other box that's powered up!
    Phew!
Feel free to ask for clarification. Good luck.
    kaz

  • What is the best way to connect a MacBook Pro to my HiFi system ?

    Hi,
I'm new to Apple support communities having just bought my first Macbook Pro (a 17" 2.5GHz i7 model) and this is my very first community post.
Im a bit of a Hi-Fi enthusiast, so, with my new MacBook Pro I've taken the opportunity of completely reloading my iTunes library in high quality Apple Lossless format. Took a while but now I've completed the task Im pleased I've done it.
My question is, what is the best way to connect a Macbook Pro to a high quality Hi-Fi preamp - my Hi-fi system is musical Fidelity, and the pre amp (an A5  CR Pre amp) and this pre amp, which has superb audio quality, only has analogue phono inputs ?
I'm interested to understand what both the wired and wireless connection options are. I'm guessing one option must be to use the headphone output, but I have no idea if the output from the headphone socket on my new macbook (which is presumably designed to drive headphones) would be at a suitable level for a phono line level input ?
Ive also read a few comments about using digital connection - and my second question would be - what is the audio digital connection on my macbook ?
Aplogies if this question has been asked lots of times before but I've looked through some previous posts and can't find any answers in simple and straightforward language concentrating on the issue of connecting a MacBook Pro to an analogue phono pre amp input ?
Thanks in anticipation of some advice.

What is the best way to connect a MacBook Pro to my HiFi system?
Look at the back of the reciever and see what your connection options are, the front headphone jack is output usually.
The Mac's  analog audio in/out ports doubles as a optical in/out ports.
The analog won't over power your amp, it's just a headphonejack, like a powered mic, just enough power to get the signal to the destination in one piece.
Since you have a analog amp, your stuck with inferior analog connections, however you mentioned you wish to listen to the best sound quality of your lossless music.
To do that your going to need a decent surround sound system with Toslink optical import jacks, a Toslink stereo jack to regular Toslink adapter, Toslink cable and enable the optical output in your System Preferences >Sound
Another method is to use a Airport Express, it also has duo analog/opical out port. Then set up the Airport Express for iTunes streaming using the Airport Utility, then in iTunes setup the lower right corner one can set the connection.
I recommned a Harmon Kardon surround sound system, with their 100 watt satelight speakers and the 200 watt subwoofer. Enable the "concert hall" and other neat effects which will turn your 2.0 (stereo) iTunes music into 4 channel speaker sound filling the room with music and sending the lower channels to the subwoofer.
It will likely bring tears to your eyes that you can actually hear the full quality of your music as intended, I almost quarranty you will never want listen to music on a crappy iPhone or iPod again.
If a surround sound system is out of your budget, you can get by using the Harmon Kardon "Go Play" portable stereo and a analog stereo cable.
If your going to use your analog amp to power reference speakers, then there are various analog adapters of all sorts to make the appropriate connections once you know what they are, check out Radio Shack online for them.

  • Flash for mobile browsers

    Hi,
I want to develop flash applications for netfrontbrowser 3.5 and 4.0.
currently we are using flash 6 for developing flash applicatins and flash palyer 7 for running compiled flash applications in the netfront 3.4. As we are migrating from netfront 3.4 to 3.5 and 4.0, it is very important to know which versions flash and flash player runtime does netfront 3.5 and 4.0?
Can some body tell me which version of flash and flash player runtime does netfront browser 3.5 and 4.0 support?

  • Camera Raw 4.1

    ...is starting to become available.
Currently it is available on ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/photoshop/cameraraw/...
The http links (and readme files) will probably go live later this week. It will also be available via Adobe Update Manager fairly soon, which is the recommended way for CS3 users to get it since it avoids having to install the plug-in manually.

I can't believe this upgrade so far. I am so impressed with what has been done that I have tears in my eyes. The ability to use the Option Key to see the effects on the Luminance is amazing! It helps to make sense of the Sharpening sliders in particular. I have simply followed recommended formulas for Sharpening up to this point. Now I can actually see how it works. The Edge Mask is wowing me. I'm also interested in Clarity. I haven't got far enough in the article to grasp it tonight, but played with it on one of my recent Boston photos and can see it working.
I am speechless! All I can say is that from where I sit, those of you who make these wonderful tools have to be gifted by God!
I cannot wait to come back to this when I'm rested up and have a few moments to focus more on Jeff's article.
Thank you all for these marvelous tools! And thank you for the articles too!

  • Disabling spotlight for Time Capsule

    Hi,
I need to disable (please do not ask the reason, I just need) indexing for backups on the Time Capsule. I know that the help on Spotlight says Time Machine needs spotlight bla bla... and, it can't disable indexing for this. I just don't beleive it, because when I disable spotlight for good with the following command:
    sudo launchctl unload -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.metadata.mds.plist
time machine continues to function just fine. Everything seems perfect as far as the time machine is concerned. However, other apps (like Mail) which relies on spotlight for searching forced me to reenable the spotlight (with the following command) with tears in my eyes:
    sudo launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.metadata.mds.plist
So, please help me to find a workaround for disabling spotlight/indexing just for time machine.
By the way I tried the following methods without any success, so do not bother to recommend them:
    1) Including TM volume and/or Backup directory in the TM volume to the privacy list of Spotlight
    2) sudo mdutil -i off /Volumes/VolumeName and sudo mdutil -E /VolumeName
    3) Erased .Spotlight-V100
    4) touch .metadata_never_index in the root and/ot Backup directory of time machine volume
    5) creating a dummy file named  .Spotlight-V100
    [rebooted in all instances...]
    PLEASE HELP

So, you've read through the FAQs and couldn't find a solution, eh? Sorry, but I don't use TM nor do I muck with CLI commands that I don't fully comprehend. You'll have to wait for someone more knowledgeable to pop in.

  • IPhoto's Pictures Forever Lost – Help!

    Hello to all,
I am afraid that I have quite a sad and seemingly hopeless story to share with you, upon this cold and dreary Winter's day. My story begins some time ago, when I sold my 20" iMac and upgraded to a brand new 21". You might ask what sadness could be associated with such a splendid upgrade? I will share this and more with you, dear reader, but you must be patient. Well, before I sold my 20" I backed up my entire computer using none other than Apple's very own Time Machine. However, this is where I failed, and this is where my story takes a sad and bitter turn. With my 20" sold and gone, I purchased a 21" from the local classifieds. Oh what a beautiful machine! I eagerly migrated everything over from my backup, and for awhile it seemed I was in technological bliss. Everything was there, my music, my movies, my applications, my photos...huh?...what's this??? One day my wife was looking through some photos in iPhoto and she met the infamous exclamation point. For those who have never encountered this villain, it shows up when your cached thumbnails fail to link back to the actual pictures. I had met this adversary before, and had defeated him. This time however, his villainous plot was far darker than I could have imagined. When my wife showed me, I thought I would be her knight and shining armor and banish the dark exclamation point forever. I opened up the contents of the iPhoto library, and to my shock and dismay, many (actually most) of the originals were gone. I searched for invisible (hidden) files, but still they were missing. How could this be? It seems that Time Machine is the true villain and the exclamation point is only one of its henchmen. I have searched the web for hours, nay even days for help. I have searched my computer to its very frameworks, all to no avail. They are gone...forever. In desperation I called the technical support of my favorite company. Yes, I called Apple. Off the record I was told that Time Machine cannot be trusted for such important things. I was further advised that in the future I actually need to manually copy over my important files such as movies, music, documents, and yes, photos. It seems shameful that a program who's entire purpose is to safeguard your precious data, cannot successfully complete its reason for being. I have long abandoned this failure of a program, and I am now quite happy with Carbon Copy Cloner. But this does not bring back my precious photos. These are irreplaceable. They are those precious times with my wife, my two precious children, and my relatives. I have been told that this is hopeless, that all is lost. Yet, I will not give up. I have come to terms with the fact that the full quality pictures are lost. But I hold out hope that I would be able to somehow get the pictures back (even if they be lower quality) through the cached thumbnails. I have tried taking screenshots, but they are so low quality (only 72dpi). I had seen people use a very high resolution digital camera and take photos of printed pictures, instead of scanning them in, so I thought this might work. The pictures are just too blurry when I take them of the screen, using a 8MegaPixel Sony camera. I have truly reached the end of my capabilities.
I send this plea out to all who have a heart, that they will try to help me come up with a viable solution. My wife gets tears in her eyes every time we talk of them possibly never coming back. You will be my hero, and hers if you can come up with some way of using those cached files. I am very willing to listen to suggestions. PLEASE HELP ME.

Open your iPhoto library with the Finder like this:
Next open the folder named "Masters" and see if the subfolder there contain your image file. If they do, close the library package, make a copy and try the three fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
1 - delete the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, that resides in your User/Library/Preferences folder.
2 - delete iPhoto's cache files that are located in the User/Library/Caches/com.apple.iPhoto folder.
3 - reboot, launch iPhoto and try again.
NOTE: If you're moved your library from its default location in your Home/Pictures folder you will have to point iPhoto to its new location when you next open iPhoto by holding the the Option key. You'll also have to reset the iPhoto's various preferences.
    Fix #2
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys depressed and follow the instructions to rebuild the library. Select options #1, #2 and #6.
    Fix #3
Rebuild the library using iPhoto Library Manager as follows:
Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 -Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 -Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option
4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
If the subfolders in the Masters folder do not contain your photos you'll either need to have a backup copy of the library that contains the files or use a file recovery application like SubrosaSoft FileSalvage to try to recover them.
In the future it's best to use paragraphs in your post to separate information and make it easier to read. Like Terence I gave up on line 3 and this response is based on what I think happened.

  • VZW ... truly more bars in more places

This can put tears in your eyes, if you have suffered from abysmal AT&T coverage for years:
    What a relief ...

The inactive iPhone and that last AT&T bill with ETF will be a bit of a tough nut, but totally worth it when it is like somebody just added a tower next to your house. Going from 0-1 bars in the house and no 3G within probably an hour to just full coverage in our house alone is night and day.
Can't wait to start test driving it, pairing it with the car and go places without losing coverage. I would bet money it is not going to drop a single call on the commute where AT&T could drop it 3-4 times.
This is going to relieve so much coverage stress ... if only we had this 3-4 years ago. But you can't have it all, at once.
