Tech challenged; have new iPod to replace old iPod....loading issues

Hi all,
I just received a new iPod classic, 160GB, to replace my old wheel-type iPod, which froze up last year. I still have my iTunes library and software from the previous iPod, and wish to transfer that library to my new iPod. When I hook up the new iPod to my PC, it does not go to any sort of set-up process....just sits there saying 'connected'. Battery is charged.
Do I need to download newer version iTunes software? If I do, will this hurt my existing Library?
Thanks for any help.

You need iTunes version 7.4 or later (the current version is 7.7). You can download that here.

The music in your current iTunes library will remain unaffected.

  • New Ipod to replace Old Ipod

I just recently purchased a 64G Ipod to replace my 32G Ipod...how do I sync my new Ipod to my computer to download all the music, audiobooks, etc. that I have on my old Ipod and my computer?

Hi Linda: All your music, audiobooks, etc should already be on your computer. Yes? All you need ot do is plug in the new iPod, give it a distinctive name and sync as you did with your existing 32gB iPod. You can use multiple iPods on a single account/computer.
    Hope this helps

Nope, dock it to iTunes, register it, & follow the subsequent instructions.

  • I am just a little embarrased... i have a new dell and an old ipod.  i want to put a cd in my dell and copy it onto my old ipod...dell and apple do not seem to be talking to each other... how in **** do i do this!

i am just a little embarrased... i have a new dell and an old ipod.  i want to copy a cd from my new dell onto my old ipod but absolutely nothing comes up on the screen to do this....

You will first have to install the OS that shipped with the Mac. After that, you can upgrade it to Mavericks.

  • Replaced old ipod want existing music on new ipod

Can anyone please tell me how I get my existing library onto my new I-Pod? Thanks

Is the music in iTunes? If it is just connect the new iPod to your computer and follow the on screen instructions to register and name it. It will update from your existing library. Depending on the size of your library and the type of iPod you choose you can have it update all songs and playlists, selected playlists only or you can manage it manually.
If you only have the songs on the old iPod you need to return them to your computer. Connect your iPod to your computer. If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of content from other sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can also read reviews of some of them here: Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes

There is also a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows or a Mac. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available at this link: Two-way Street: Moving Music Off the iPod

  • I think iTunes thinks my new iPod is my old iPod and it's keeping me from syncing apps

I recently set up an iPod 5 to replace my iPod 4.  The new one was my wife's that she never used and let me have it.  So I restored it, tied it to my account, and I've been using it for a couple of weeks and a few days ago downloaded Tiny Death Star, which I've been enjoying.
However, ever since I downloaded it I have been unable to sync with my computer.  I repeatedly get the "This iPod is no longer authorized for this app, do you want to authorize", error in iTunes then Iclick yes, then it asks over again and I can't sync anything else.  So I deleted the game(sigh...) and everything worked fine again -- but when I try to "push" the app to my iPod from iTunes, it tells me that "tinydeathstar" is not compatible with my iPod -- which is absolutely incorrect.  It is incompatible with my iPod 4 (there's some compass thing it needs?) but I downloaded it on my iPod 5 and it runs like a champ.
Tiny Death Star is the only app I have that won't run on an iPod 4.  I think that's the issue with the syncing and the pushing -- iTunes thinks that my new iPod is the old iPod, and won't "allow" an app it thinks it is incompatible.  To remedy this I've tried 1) doing everything from this support article : (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1389), 2) restoring my iPod to factory settings 3) removing both devices from my account and re-adding only the new one and finally 4) uninstalling itunes and manually removing a bunch of registry stuff.
    None of that worked.
So it isn't a huge issue for now.  I just won't be able to sync my iPod for however long I play this game.  But eventually more and more apps won't be compatible with an iPod 4 and I'll be in a pickle.  I might have to rebuild my computer (sigh) just to get itunes to work again.
So, other than rebuilding my computer, any ideas?

The app seems to be the tiny death star .  try reset the sync folder and try it on another account (create one if you dont have one). mac: http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1627; http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4600 and for windows: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1692. tell me what happens.

  • I have already had to replace my ipod clickwheel

I have already had to replace my ipod clickwheel (less than a year old) once because it froze when I removed the headphone jack from the ipod. It would function even after using the 5 "Rs." My powerbook G4 would not recognize it and when I took it the the genius bar at apple, the rep. told me it had to be replaced because it was a defective iPod. He gave me a brand new one (this was in November 2005).
My new iPod clikwheel (the replacement) has frozen, just like the first one, but this it happened after I selected the "eject" function on iTunes. I waited for it to disconnect and then I removed it from the firewire cable (it was fully charged at this point and properly ejected). As soon as I removed it from the firewire cable the iPod froze (I have never had this specific problem until now).
I went through the 5"Rs" and nothing helped. Now I have the same exact problem as I did with the first one and this new iPod is only 4 months old! I now have to go back to the genius bar and ask for another iPod. I paid $300 for this machine and it is unreliable. I am going to ask for my money back unless Apple can gauarantee either that this will not happen again or that they will repapi the iPod for as long as I have it if this problem occurs again. I am tempted to use a different brand of mp3 player.
Why is this happening? The discussion boards don't help. I've read so many complaints of the same problem but no one seems to have had the problem occur twice! - and now one has stated the events prior to the problems. Is this a permanent problem with the clickwheel? Did Apple know about this when they released it to the public? Is Apple doing anything to fix the problem? Will there be a recall? WIll Apple refund or replace every single iPod clickwheel with new reliable ones? I believe this is a serious problem that needs immediate attention. I will go to the apple store...again.. but have asked Apple to file my complaint. I have sent this complaint to Apple online and will be sending a copy to Apple's corporate offices as well.
I would love to ask everyone and anyone to reply to this message if you have had the same permanent problem with your iPod Clickwheel - it freezes, is not recognized by the computer, does not appear in iTunes, the desktop, or the disk utility, when connecting via Firewire or USB the iPod screen displays "Do Not Diconnect" but never changes, 5 R's do not work, and after speaking to a genius bar Apple representative or apple care technician you are told that the only solution is to have the iPod replaced. Pleas state if the amount of times this problem has occured and if it has occured with multiple iPod Clickwheels.
    Thank you.

    never mind

  • ITunes thinks my new iTouch is my old iPod

I received a new iTouch and when I first connected it to iTunes I accidentally didn't rename it. So now iTunes thinks my new iTouch is my old iPod. So when I started syncing it, it looks as though my new 64gb iTouch only has 32gb. How do I make iTunes recognize my iTouch as something new? I was scared to do restore because I thought it might restore the old iPod settings and not the new iTouch settings.

    Hello noonie23,
    And welcome to Apple Discussions!
How you sync one iPod should have no effect on any other iPod you may be syncing to the same iTunes library.
I think at this point it would be best to restore the iPod via iTunes, name it to whatever you like, then sync away. Not sure why only 32 gb is showing though.

  • New computer:  Can I upload new songs from my new computer to my old ipod without deleting the playlists that already exist??

I recently had to purchase a new computer due to my old one shooting sparks and almost setting fire to my furniture when I used it.  I can use it rarely to try to get my itunes loaded to transfer over, but it usually doesn't cooperate.  I now have a bunch of new songs on my new itunes from purchases and also uploading old cd's.  I want to be able to add these songs to my playlists I already have mostly because I use my ipod to work out and also, there are a large amount of songs from my old computer on playlists currently. Is there anyway to make new playlists from my new computer onto my old ipod??

You should be backing up regularly so you can transfer your library to the new computer.
    Otherwise, you can transfer purchases

Have new MacBook Air and old MacBook (2 1/2 years old). Can transfer files from Air to MacBook by Bluetooth but cannot transfer file from MacBook to Air. When I try, MacBook does not recognize Air. File transfer only goes in one direction. Any solution to this problem? Regards

The Setup Assistant can restore your data from a Time Machine backup. You'll be asked if you want to do this the first time you turn the computer on.

  • Is it possible for the software to be too new to restore from old iPod's backup?

So I tried to restore my new iPod from my old iPod's backup, but the old one was working on iOS 5.1 and the new one was an older software.
It said it could not restore the new one from the backup of the old one because the software was too old, but the only option is to update it to iOS 5.1.1.. will it still say it is not compatible now because the new one is too new and the old one is too old? :/

If you update your iPod to iOS 5.1.1, you'll be able to restore the iPod to a backup from any iPod with current or older software.
To put it simpler, you can update your new iPod to the latest iOS and restore your old iPod's data.

  • Just got new ipod to replace old one. Can I transfer songs?

I just replaced my broken ipod mini with a new one. I want to transfer my old songs if I can, but I don't know how. When I plug my ipod into my PC it continually says DO NOT DISCONNECT. Also, it told me to restore my ipod, but that it would erase everything I had on there. Itunes still has my old songs, but I can't figure out if or how to transfer them. I click restore but I am still not able to get my songs or buy new ones. Do I need to go through the whole process like I did when I got my first ipod? And is there a way to transfer all my old songs onto my new ipod?

If you have all your songs on iTunes, then you need to setup the new iPod and then sync it to iTunes.
First, make sure that the iPod is fully charged.
iPods come pre-formatted for Mac, so you will need to format it for Windows.
Make sure that you have the latest iPod Updater software
You also need to install the Updater software by double-clicking on the file that downloads.
After you install the Updater to your PC, reboot your computer.
    After rebooting, run the Updater.
Go to: Start ==> Programs ==> iPod.
It should initialize then ask you to connect an iPod.
Connect the iPod when asked (not before) and you should have two options available: Update or Restore.
-- Choose the Restore option and it will update your iPod's firmware to the latest version
    b and
    format your iPod's hard drive.
Disconnect the iPod from the PC when permitted. Reconnect it and iTunes should open and register the iPod. Then sync it as normal.

  • How to replace old ipod with new one

I have just got an iPhone 64gb as my 32gb iPod touch is full.  How do I transfer the contents from my old iPod to my new iPhone?  It should be simple but doesn't seem to be!

Thanks.  I think the problem is that the c:drive on my computer is full and so it does not have the capacity to do it.  I have a new computer and have managed to copy the downloads on to the new computer but it won't sync the rest of the music because I think the old device is the registered device.  If that makes sense!
