Tech note port discrepency

I'm trying to follow all your recommendations for getting iChat AV to play well with others, but not having any luck. I haven't given up but want to point out a discrepency between TROUBLE SHOOTING REVISITED and Apple Tech Note 93208 Using iChat AV with a firewall or NAT router.
The discreption of whether certain ports to be opened are TCP or UDP is where the difference lies. For example, the tech note says:
1. All iChat AV traffic is UDP except for ports 5190 and 5298, which need to be open for both TCP and UDP; and 5220, 5222, and 16384-16403, which need to be open for TCP only.
2. Ports 5297, 5298, and 5353 are used only for local traffic. Opening these ports may be necessary for firewall software that runs on a computer, rather than on a router. These ports do not need to be open at your uplink to the Internet.
Note that this is also the tech note that comes up in iChatAV HELP.
Note too that port 5298 is listed twice in TSRevisited under UDP. Not sure if one of those was supposed to be another number or not.
Thanks

Hi Bruce,
This post has dropped n to the Second page at present http://discussions.info.apple.com/webx?128@@.68bcb01b
Note 1. becomes clear if you read it like it read previously but add the Jabber port info.
1. All iChat AV traffic is UDP except for ports 5190 and 5298, which need to be open for both TCP and UDP; and 5220, 5222, which need to be open for TCP only.
Regarding note 2. I had note spent that much time re-reading that one and it has not in fact changed.
I would add that I recommned that these ports are opened in a router that sits behind the modem if it is the device that routes. I would further add that if the modem is the only device that routes these ports my need to routed to other computers on the local net rather that to open them to the internet.

• Port 25 works fine for SSL/SMTP, but not port 587?

So after doing a rather painful migration to new hardware to support 10.5 from a previously working 10.4 config...
I got SSL working -- web service is fine, mail service is fine for all ports for POP and IMAP...but not port 587.
- It's open on my firewall
- There's no software firewall impeding it
- Trying to telnet to port 587 results in nothing
It's as if the server isn't even listening to the port...
And the odd part?
- Mac OS X desktop clients report they can't connect on 587. Changing the port to 25 and leaving everything else the same (auth type, username, password) -- suddenly it works...BUT
- The iPhone is configured for port 587 and works every time.
My guess it that iPhone auto falls back to port 25 if all else fails, I can't explain why it would work. Bigger question, I suspect something got munged in the migration...is it possible it needs to be told to listen on 587 as well?

I saw that site...it mentions adding port 587 specifically -- or commenting out "the appropriate lines of master.cf"
I assume that means to uncomment out the submission port in that file -- or would it be better to add 587 specifically?
Also, I never allow unauth SMTP (even inside my network) -- I would want to continue to impose that on the submission port and the normal port 25; how do I do this?
Thanks in advance for the help.

• Where are the Knowledgebase/Adobe Tech Notes

This morning I went in search of some Adobe Tech Notes for Premiere Elements 7 and found what appears to be a "beta" version of what used to be a workable Knowledgebase.
Does anyone have any information as to whether these Adobe Tech Notes are still available or whether they have met the same fate as the Premiere Elements FAQs that Steve Grisetti was looking into in response to my recent topic/question on the latter?
Further, who is the force behind the changes encountered here...Adobe or top level users? If Adobe, then who can we contact to direct these nuisance problems. Any suggestions?

SG,
Thanks for the feedback. That link that you posted was the one that I got lured into initially and that motivated me to post this topic in this forum.
I just tried a Google Search for the Premiere Elements 7 Adobe TechNote (Vista, Errors & Freezes) that I was looking for at the Adobe site and found it on the Internet. So, it still exists somewhere. Adobe apparently has not killed the Internet link to it yet.

Thanks for taking the time to response. Please continue to do what you can to preserve Premiere Elements resources such as FAQs and AdobeTech Notes.

• AQ Configuration Tech Note in Oracle Express DB Trigger issue

Hi,
I'm trying to implement the QA Configuration Tech Note (http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/integration/bam/10.1.3/TechNotes/TechNote_BAM_AQ_Configuration.pdf)
My environment is Windows 2K3 Server, BAM 10.1.3.3, and Oracle DB 10g Express Edition. Everything was going great until I got to Step 4 on page 3. I can't seem to get the trigger to compile. As I researched this I found, much to my surprise, that as much as Oracle AQ is supported in Oracle XE, JMS is not! So, what I would like to know is there another way to get AQ to work from Oracle XE as a way of sending data to BAM? Or, is there some other way of getting a trigger to send a message via JMS? etc.
Thanks in advance for your suggestions.
- Jordan.

Express does not support the Java message types (sys.aq$_jms_text_message) since they require the Oracle JVM which is not included in XE.
Edit:
Or I might be wrong ? The following PDF doc uses an XE database. I did not get OJMS working with XE when I tried and now I do not have any local XE instance to try against.

• Adobe employees: Missing tech notes

To any Adobe employees reading this: Two tech notes are now missing from the knowledgebase:
Troubleshoot system errors or freezes in the Photoshop Elements 8 Organizer (
Windows XP) (TechNote cpsid_51385)
Troubleshoot system errors or freezes in the Photoshop Elements 8 Organizer
(Windows Vista) (TechNote cpsid_51386)
These tech notes show up in the results if you search the knowledgebase for “troubleshooting errors or freezes elements organizer 8”.  See the attached screenshot.  But if you click on those search results, you get “Sorry, this page is not available”.
These tech notes are critical for helping users troubleshoot problems with the PSE 8 Organizer.  I assume they were dropped by accident?
In the past, I reported such issues through the Adobe Customer Support Portal. But customer support is so clueless now (they argue or don’t understand or summarily withdraw the case), doing so would be pointless.
So if any Adobe employee reads this, and you care about your company’s service, you might take it upon yourself to fix this situation.

Hey John:
Thanks for pointing this out.
The team is on it.

• Why not porting CDC-PP reference implementation to PocketPC by ourself?

Hi All,
Seeing your open letter about Personal Profile for PocketPC, I have the question: Why not porting CDC-PP reference implementation to PocketPC by ourself? Or do you know any open source project on this topic?
in Java world, we should DIY (eclipse, Junit, ANT......)
Regards!
Tiger

Sorry, I missed the "reference implementation" in the subject. Can you even get the thing to compile? Taking a guess at which of the umpteen makefiles to use, I get pjt33@charis:/tmp/personal/build/share/$ make -f rules.mk
rules.mk:289: /empty.mk: No such file or directory
rules.mk:394: warning: overriding commands for target `/'
rules.mk:20: warning: ignoring old commands for target `/'
rules.mk:422: *** target file `/' has both : and :: entries.  Stop. There are also licencing issues with using the reference implementation - if you want to distribute it properly, it seems you have to pay Sun an annual fee for the Technology Compatibility Kit.

• Verizon Fios rep says that I can not port my number.

I had Verizon number for about 14 years and I recently moved to a new house and got Fios. When they signed up for Fios triple play on phone, the sales rep said that my number will be transferred to my new location. Meanwhile, I was given temporary number. Installation was done and I was told that the old number be active by 5pm that day. Did not happen. Called verizon back and they said it would take another 24 hrs. No success and I called back. Same response again and was told to wait 2 days now. Called again and finally spoke to someone who said that she will straighened everything out and will call in 48 hrs. Got no response on 3rd day so I called back. By now, I must've called about 4-5 times regarding this issue. Finally, they told me that after sending trouble ticket, back end department told them that the number can NOT be transferred. They said it is copper based line and can not be put on Fios network, which is digital network. I told her that Vonage said they can port it and she said they can NOT port it either, because it is a copper line number. I had spoken to Vonage before getting Fios and was told that they can port it without any problem. Just to confirm again, I called Vonage and I was told that the number is portable. I want that same number but Fios won't give it to me. Feels like they told me they could port number originally just to get my business. Did anyone else have same problem? Any way to resolve it?

Since we haven't heard back from you, it appears assistance is no longer required. If you need any future help with your Verizon service, please make a post here on the forums so we can assist.

• Verizon will not port my number

I'm trying to move from a small carrier (Chat Mobility) to Verizon.  I'm moving 3 phones now and will add another 2 next year.  I really want to take my old phone numbers with me.  When I went to the store today they told me it’s not possible to port the numbers.  How can that be?  I know Chat Mobility runs on the Verizon network so I know they have coverage here.  Verizon doesn’t have a problem selling me a phone with a new number for where I live but won't let me port my number?.  When I talk to tech support they just tell me "that's weird" and can't explain to me why.  Please help.

I'd call the to see if they have a way to "migrate" the phone number instead of trying to port it. I know that's how some other carriers do those transfers...assign a temporary number, then migrate the old vendor carrier phone number from the vendor system into the standard postpaid system. Hope they can get it straightened out for you, but like daonys said, it's possible they may not be able to perform a migration, either. It's always worth a shot.

• Can not port forward on WRT54GS v6 "You cannot use the router IP"

Hello, I'm trying to open a port number, but when I try to use my router's IP, the following message appears
"You cannot use the router IP, network, or broadband address"

My ADSL was working as a NAT behind a NAT connection, so I had to change my Local IP Address to 192.168.2.1.
Router: WRT54GS v6 firmware 1.52.8 (latest)  -  Bellsouth router: Westell 6100
Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7600]
Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:
       Connection-specific DNS Suffix  . : launchmodem.com
       Link-local IPv6 Address . . . . . : fe80::40a9:a76e:61b3:6435%11
       IPv4 Address. . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.2.100
       Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
       Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.2.1
So, please help me, how can I open ports on my router? =[
PS: I tried to use 192.168.2.100, and even though it lets me use it, it still seems not to open that port... my IP is dynamic.

Generally: NAT behind NAT is a bad idea. There is usually no need for double NAT. Either configure the ADSL router as bridge and use the WRT for your internet connection or set up the WRT as simple access point behind the ADSL router.
It's also unclear to me what is working or not. First I thought you can't set up forwarding at all because you get that error message. Then, in your PS you write you tried to use 192.168.2.100 and that seemed to be possible. The IP address to forward to must be the IP address of the computer to which you want to forward. Thus 192.168.2.100 is exactly the IP address you have to set up. Does this work or not?
Also remember: with double NAT you must set up two forwardings: first on the ADSL router then on the WRT. Port forwarding is necessary to allow incoming traffic through NAT. All incoming traffic arrives on the ADSL router. Thus setting up port forwarding on the WRT only won't do a thing.
It's also not recommend to use dynamic IPs for forwarding destinations. Dynamic IP addresses may change over time and that requires you to adjust forwardings accordingly. It's better to reserve fixed IP addresses (if your WRT supports this) or set a static IP address on the computer outside the DHCP address pool.

• Photos in text of blog entry do not port to main blog page

I have posted before about the photos from my entry page disappearing when ported to my main blog page. I have yet to find a solution so I'm asking for help again.
I'm am trapped using iWeb 1.1 until I find a solution. I use the Modern Template with modifications. Usually I delete the snowboarding surfer placeholder. Please note I'm not concerned that this photo doesn't port. I don't want it to. I do however need the photos that I have embedded via text wrap within my blog entry to port to the main blog page. They do not.
I have tried keeping the snowboarder place holder and redoing entries with wrapped text, but my additional photos are still missing. I have checked the box in iWeb 2 that says show photos. My layouts conveted to iWeb 2 look perfect on the entry's page, and horrible with missing photos on the summary page.
This problem is beyond frustrating. My blog can be seen here, however it is still the iWeb 1.1 format.
http://web.mac.com/knittsings/iWeb/knittsings/knittsings/knittsings.html
As you can see, almost all my entries have numerous photos. I want them to display on the main blog page.
Am I missing something very basic? I have seen others with this same question but no one seems to have had any luck resolving this problem.
Thanks,
Kathryn

• RVS4000 not Port forwarding

I have  a new RVS4000 router, which is hosing a seagate GoFlec Home drive.
Origianally my WRT54G router worked fine.
I cannot get the UPnP to work.
I have UPnP enabled.
I have my goFlex Home to automatically configure router for portforwarding, ports 21, 22,80, and 443, and 50000 and 50001.
So, nothing. I cannot connect to my drives http://my.intricatephotography.com
Leaving UPnP enabled, I manually portforward my ports to 192.168.1.121 ( the LAN ip of the GoFlex Hardrive.)
Now all works well.
I'm noting too, that the HipServ site says that ports are forwarded correctly, but it cannot configure the router for UPnP correctly.
Any suggestions?
My port forwarding seem to be a up-and down situation. My customers are geting angry.

Hi Darrin,
Intriguing post, I just had to comment, as the application looks interesting.
I have absolutely no idea how seagate goFlex @ home setup software  loaded on a PC or MAC  can automatically  via uPnP enable port forwarding specific ports and destination IP on a RVS4000 router.
But, you manually port forwarded  and "Now all works well" as you said in your posting.
Once a port if forwarded, it should not be up or down. I can't imagine port forwarding not working well on the RVS4000
But, please check the seagate knowlwdgwbase and Axenta forum to see if others are having trouble with uPnP
The problem originates from a feature that hasn't been validated on a cisco router, there must be better documentation on how to get uPnP workign with the goFlex application.
Also why not place a warranty call with the Disti partner you purchased the freeagent goFlex @ home.
Also I welcome input from  anyone within the community who  has seen this issue with goFlex@home application.
regards Dave
