+++ Tech. Question: PPC installed System HD swap to an Intel Mac?

Dear fellow board members,
since I do not have the possibility to try this my question goes out for all of you with a techniqual (and indeed theoretical) more detailed knowledge.
Q: Would it be possible, to make a complete clean install (new SATA Harddisk) of Leopard OS 10.5 (together with my Universal Binary Apps, like Logic 8, all 3rd Party UB plug-ins, etc.) on my current *PPC G5 Computer* and swapping that _same HD_ into a *Intel MacPro* later?
Could this be regarded as a realistic scenario?
The main reason I am asking is because I could immediately start all installations and do not lose time when doing the intel-switch.
Any help would be very appreciated - Thanks for sharing your experiance
With my very best,
Vic.

Some people are thick
why would a OS and program designed to work on a specific (apple) hardware set run better on a random pc component chipset. Get real you want logic you buy a mac, Some people are just plain stupid.
please tell me if i am missing somthing but why oh why would it clear system overloads??? are you trying to say pc's are more powerfull than macs? if so then get real there is very little (if any) difference between mac and pc these days. The OS is probably a little more efficent on a mac tho.
just my tupence.

  • Questions about Installing Windows 7 ultimate 64 bit on Mac Pro

Hi, I have an early 2009 Quad Core Mac Pro which is running Snow Leopard. I have 4 internal drives in my Mac Pro. Does WIndows 7 have to be installed on the same drive I have Snow Leopard installed or can it be on any of my drives. My boot drive has 215 gb of free space. 2 of them have 100gb of free space and my 2 tb drive has 40 gb of free space. To install Windows 7, do I have to partition one of my drives which would mean erasing all my data? How much free space do I need for windows 7 and programs, etc? Would Windows 7 ultimate 64 bit work? Any info is greatly appreciated

Read the link ""The hatter"" gave you and read the "FAQ's", it will answer quite a few of your questions. Read the Installation manual a few times to familiarize yourself with it before you start and it will make it a lot easier when the time comes.
Windows will be little bit quicker on the Mac-Boot disk only because of your SSD drive. It's rare, but you leave yourself open for problems if anything gets buggered up with both OS's on the same drive. You could lose the Mac side also. You have the chance to save yourself one less problem with it being on a separate drive.
You can install Windows on "any" INternal drive with Boot Camp. Windows can only be installed in the #1 slot on a MacPro if there are any other drives in it. (You can put it in any slot after it's been installed.) And Windows can't be installed on an EXternal drive from a Mac.
Your best bet would be either put one of the internal drives into an external HD enclosure ($15/$20) and replacing it with another blank HD and just splitting it into two partitions or try to free up more space on one of the other drives so you have more room.
    Or like ""The hatter""mentioned.
"""You could put OS X HD in lower optical drive bay and put in a drive just for Windows."""
The only problem with making room on an already full drive is that some times some invisible "root" files will be left behind and Boot Camp CAN'T move it and you could get a generic "Can't Install, Files in the way" type error. So you would have to Backup, erase, reinstall to clean it up that way.
It's not so much installing Windows without Boot Camp, but you need BootCamp in order to use the "Start-up Disk" preferences. The Finder can't see the Windows install with out it. No big deal if you want to use the "Option" Key every time to reboot. Boot Camp Also has a couple of preferences like the F-Keys, etc, that you may need to use. It Could be a bigger headache. Boot Camp just makes it A LOT easier for the -non- geeks.

  • How can I install Power PC designed application in Intel Mac Machine?

I tried to install an application which was written for the old Power PC Mac Machine in my new Intel Mac Machine.  The system released a message that Power PC application is no longer supported.  How can I install the old Power PC program?  Thanks for your help.

    You can't.
Lion does not support ANY software written for a PPC Mac.
    Time to update the software!

  • 4 Questions re installing a second Optical Drive in a Mac Pro (Harpertown)

For years I have owned and used a Sony DRX-810UL-T optical drive as an external unit with my Mac Pro "Harpertown" purchased on February 19, 2009. It was connected to the computer using the firewire cable and it worked correctly.
    Some Background
Today it dawned on me I had an empty optical drive bay in the Mac Pro so I should move the Sony drive in there and eliminate a bit of the clutter on my computer desk. I read the section on installing optical drives in the little Apple manual that came with my computer but it only discussed a single drive installation.
Checked on line and found several sources describing how to do this and a couple of YouTube videos also showing how to do this. (Oddly only one of the videos mentioned the need for plugging in the power cable).
I made sure I plugged the cables into the proper units as both had helpful legends on them indicating which was for the top drive and which was for the bottom drive.
After installation I powered up and found neither drive would appear.
Checked the About this Mac item in the Apple menu and got confirmation that the system didn't see any drives. Opened the computer again and unplugged the Sony's power and data cables then closed the computer and fired up again.
The original Super Drive again appeared and worked correctly.
    The Questions:
    1. Since the Super drive came with the Mac Pro and was in the top space can I assume it needed to stay there and not get moved to the lower space?
    2. Since the Sony DRX-810UL-T has the correct connectors does this indicate this drive can be used with the Harpertown Mac Pro?
    3. If it can, did I miss setting some jumpers? I noticed both drives have one jumper in place but each appears to be in a slightly different spot than the other.
    4. Since the Sony drive worked correctly with my current OS (10.6.6) using the firewire cable can I assume it does not need a firmware update to be used internally.
    Wrap up
Since the original Super Drive is working properly I am sure I did no damage to it or the computer. It would be nice to be able to get the Sony DVD drive to work internally, however.
Thanks, in advance, to anyone who can offer some help with this situation.

    hatter,
Thank you for this added information. Here's the current status of things.
Just to check that the Sony drive would work internally I disconnected the superdrive (ata cable and power cable) and made the Sony drive the only drive plugging it in as if it was the top drive. The jumper for it was set to cable select.
The Profiler found it and listed is in both the ATA section and the disc burner section.
I checked the jumper on the superdrive to be sure it was also set for cable select and plugged both drives back in using the top connections for the super drive and bottom connections for the Sony,
Again only the SuperDrive appears in the ATA list and and the disc burner list.
I am beginning to wonder it the problem may actually be with the ribbon cable that snakes back to the motherboard.
Since that cable has a set of dual outlets at the drive end and has them labeled for top and bottom, is it possible to plug in only one drive using the bottom connector as a test to see if data flows to the motherboard?
Is it possible some part of that cable has somehow become disconnected at the motherboard?

  • Can't watch Getting Started video on 16.0.1 install page with up to date Intel Mac 10.6.8 - no mp4 plugin?

"Getting Started" page for Firefox 16.0.1 has a video window that plays audio only. Firefox test page for plugins shows RealPlayer, Flash, Flip4Mac and Java are up to date. What other video plugins are required. I'm currently using Firefox 10.0.2 and I'm not inclined to update unless I have good reasons to do so.

When the page opens I get a message that plugins are missing. Clicking on Install Missing Plugins comes up with Unknown Plugin (video/mp4); Manual Install takes me to the DivX Install page - DivX is up to date.
Once I start the video, Copy Video Location is not an option with Control-click. I can access Page Source, which seems to suggest that Flash is not installed although the Plug In check page says it is.
Is this extract from Page Source helpful?: div class="video-player-no-flash" This video requires a browser with support for open video or Flash.
There doesn't seem to be an option here to be able to attach the whole Page Source as a text file.
    Cheers.

  • Cannot install Photoshop CS2 on Intel Mac 10.4.6 or 10.4.7

    Hey,
I have just tried to install Photoshop CS2 on an Itel MacBook Pro but it gets stuck while installing "Shared Packages" of "Adobe Help Center".
    Any idea out there?
    Thanks

Please don't say that CS2 doesn't work under Rosetta, when it does. There are performance issues, and for those who use CS2 for large, system intensive purposes have good reason to not want to upgrade to Intel, but that doesn't mean CS2 won't work.
I haven't experienced the install problem personally, but googling "cs2""intel""mac" yields this article:
    http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?story=20060524084530919
To summarize, it may be an issue with either Quicktime 7.1 or Adobe Version Cue.
    Good luck.

I erased my HD and could not install lion. if I turn on the mac now all I see is a folder with a question-mark. How can I install a new operation system?

Install or Reinstall Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion from Scratch
Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Using System Drive from PPC G5 as Internal Storage on my new Mac Pro

    Hi all,
So, bad news is my old PPC G5 finally died on me last week, after years of faithful service. Since my Apple Care Protection Plan ran out years ago, and the cost to replace the parts I need are so astronomical, I've decided that it's time for a new machine. Good news is, I ordered my new Mac Pro on Monday! Here's my question:
I installed an additional internal hard drive in my PPC G5, and I want to utilize that drive, as well as the system drive from my PPC in my Mac Pro. What is the procedure for doing this, besides physically transferring the drives? Specifically, how do I use my old 250GB system drive from my PPC as extra storage in my Mac Pro?
Any help would be appreciated, and if I'm not being entirely clear with my question, please let me know.
    Thanks!

Hatter's remark about coolant leak repairs being handled out of warranty is valid, though it may be too late for you if you have already purchased your MacPro. I, for one, can vouch that Apple is being responsive to the needs of those of us that bought top of the line G5's less than 4 years ago. Your dual 2.7 should have lasted longer. My dual 2.5 began to display symptoms consistent with coolant leak problems about three months ago. Even though Apple confirmed that it was not a coolant leak they still offered do the repair on their dime because of tardiness in repair and a failure to communicate with in a timely manner with me (what was estimated at 7-10 days took a month to resolve). When they were unable to fix my machine, they offered me a brand new 2.8 8-core Mac Pro in exchange! Always call and get a case number or take the machine into the Apple store to have them determine what the real issue is before giving up your hard earned dollars.

  • Hi I installed a new hard drive in my Mac mini osx lion an when I turn it on I get a flashing file with a question mark. I tried holding command and R keys when turning it on but the recovery fails to work. Does any one know how I can get it to recover?

Hi I installed a new hard drive in my Mac mini osx lion an when I turn it on I get a flashing file with a question mark. I tried holding command and R keys when turning it on but the recovery fails to work. I can hold the option key at start up and choose my network, then Internet recovery shows up with an arrow pointing up. When I click on the arrow Internet recovery fails and all I get is a globe with a triangle on it with an exclamation mark on it, and under that it says
    apple.com/support
          -6002F
Does any one know how I can fix this without a recovery disc? Thanks

I just want to add to this, in case someone else searches for this error on Apple Support (google doesnt cover apple support.. how clever is that?)
I had the same error. And i had a Computer that had worked, with a SSD drive and 16GB upgrade done by the owner himself.
I tried swapping with a Mechinal Harddrive, no luck.
Kept the Mechanical drive in, and tried with some other Ram, it worked..
So for me this error and after reading the other responses can be boiled down to a Harddrive problem or Ram issue.
    It was Ram for me..

  • Can't install System on to MacBook

Just replaced the Hard Drive in my MacBook. When I booted up from the Install disk I get a message that I can't install System 10.4.8 on this computer. In disk utilities I was able to set up new HD and ran diagnositics and it comes up fine. But HD does not show up on desktop. I also tried to boot up from Disk Warrior, tech Tool, and ann older System Version, 10.3 but they wouldn't even boot. HD was HIT0A28844,160GB 2.5" Hitachi Travelstar 5K160 5400RPM SATA Notebook Drive with 8MB Cache.

    HI
10.3 won't boot since it's not compatible with the MacBook, and, depending on the age of the DiskWarrior and TechTool disks, the same may apply there.
Is the drive currently empty? When you boot from the install disk, go through the installation steps until you get to select the internal drive as the destination. Do you see the drive in the list? What does the message say? Click on Options and see if you can select a different install option (eg Erase and Install).

  • OS 10.5 Family Pack Retail Questions: PowerPC Install; Used as Boot Disk?

I have a MacBook Pro (which I've not unsealed yet) that was sold with 10.5:
    (http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/macbook_pro/stats/macbook-pro-core-2-duo-2 .53-aluminum-15-late-2008-unibody-specs.html)
and I have a Mac G4 Dual 867 powerPC, which will continue to run 10.4.11.
I also have a piece of database software that requires 10.5 so I am thinking of installing 10.5 on a separate hard drive in the G4 so I can run that software on the G4 if needed.
I believe I also recall reading that the install disks sold with the MacBook Pro can't be booted from (you need the retail).
    So my questions are:
    1. Does the retail version (family pack) include installers for both PowerPC and Intel Macs (i.e., I am free to install on any Mac which meets the minimum requirements)?
    2. The retail pack can be used as boot disk for the MacBook Pro in case of an emergency?
So far, from the research I've done I would say yes, but wanted to check.

Does the retail version (family pack) include installers for both PowerPC and Intel Macs (i.e., I am free to install on any Mac which meets the minimum requirements)?
Yes, as long as the Mac isn't newer than the disk.
The retail pack can be used as boot disk for the MacBook Pro in case of an emergency?
    See above.

  • Is is possible to install System Center 2012 R2 products using SQL aliases names

    Hello,
Is there a way to install System Center 2012 R2 using SQL aliases, and if applicable, which System Center products support this scenario ?
I have it as an acceptance criteria, but I'm not able to make it work.

So, I would like to hear from a voice of someone who have tried this, and can confirm if it is applicable or not.
ok, I have to ask the stupid question but.... What is wrong with your voice?? The setup tells you it is not supported what more do you want?

  • Why can´t I install system on ext. disk??

Why can´t I install my system on an external firewiredisk to have an alternative boot disk? My dealer said I can do. Now I tried to install Tiger from original DVD to an external firewire 400 disk from lacie, that was originally formatted to mac extended in two partitions. Before installation now, I formatted one partition to mac ext. journaled. Installer didn´t accept that. Why?

I'm not sure that's correct. "Not sure" because of the 10.2 issue, but I can say definitively that you can boot a both a G4 PB running 10.3 and an Intel MBP running 10.4 from the different partitions on the same external drive.
The two issues are partition scheme and the formatting of each partition. For my example, both partitions can have the same format, but that shouldn't matter for this since partitioning is "above" formatting in the drive architecture.
PPC machines must have an Apple Partition Map (APM) partition scheme on the boot drive to boot (they can't boot from a GUID drive). The Intel Mac OS installer requires a GUID-partitioned drive to install onto, but Intel Macs don't require GUID drives to boot. In other words, the Intel flavor of the Mac OS can't be installed directly onto an APM-partitioned drive with the install discs, but the OS can be cloned to the APM-partitioned drive. I have a LaCie external, APM-partitioned, and I use SuperDuper to backup my MBP and my wife's G4 PB running Panther. The external drive successfully boots my MBP and her PB.
