Tech question re: stealth mirroring MacBook to HDTV?

Greetings Apple family,
I understand how to mirror using the HDMI very well, that is mirroring exactly what is on my MacBook screen to the HDTV. My question therefore is, would it be possible to mirror for example only a Safari screen shot to the TV, while I'd be working on a Word file on the MacBook?
Thanks for the anticipated co-op everyone!
God bless,
Chris

I think you can do it.
While you're plugging the HDMI wire, go to Apple - System Preferences- then select Disply.
Next go under Arrangement and adjest your displays secreen. Choose one to display Safary and the other to work on whatever you want.
I hope this is work!

  • "Arrangement" tab missing, can't display Macbook on HDTV

    Hello,
I have a mini-DVI to HDMI adapter, an HDMI cable and an HDTV. I'm trying to hook up my Macbook to the HDTV, but I'm having trouble because the "Arrangment" tab is missing in the Display settings.
The crazy thing is that I've successfully mirrored displays countless times before, with the same cables, Macbook, and HDTV. But one day the "Arrangement" tab decided not to show up, and I'm at the end of my rope trying to figure out what happened or what I did differently.
The HDTV recognizes that the HDMI cable is plugged in, and the Macbook recognizes when it is connected to the TV as well, flashing blue when I plug or unplug the mini-DVI adapter. I've tried everything I can think of: restarting, unplugging everything and plugging it all back in, sleeping and waking the computer, trying to connect the Macbook while plugged in and while just running on the battery, turning everything off before disconnecting and reconnecting the cables - everything. No matter what I try, clicking "Detect Displays" still does nothing, my HDTV's screen remains blank, and the "Arrangement" tab remains absent.
I've done everything short of buying new cables, which I don't want to do because I know that what I have works!
Any suggestions? I've really missed watching things on my HDTV. Thanks for your time!

After much fiddling with display resolutions and TV setting, and several calls to Apple help, problem was found to have a really basic solution: replace the RCA connector cable. The old one was shot.

  • Questions on Db Mirroring

    Hi All,
I have below questions on database mirroring.
I am using sql server 2008 sp3 Developer Edition.
I am using High Availability mode (Syncronous, witness & Automatic failover).
Here is what I observed and wanted to know reason for the below behavior.
    A - Principal Server
    B - Mirror Server
    C - Witness Server
    Scenario-1
The mirroring state is SYNCRONIZED. Meaning no more log records to be sent to Mirror db.
    Now, say, Witness is down
After 3 minutes later, Principal is down.
At this point, there is only my Mirror instance is running with role as Mirror.
My question here is, how can I make this Mirror as Principal.
Since my Principal and Witness is down, I cannot run below command
    use master
    go
ALTER DATABASE <database_name> SET PARTNER FAILOVER
    go
    Scenario-2
Its a continuation question on Scenario-1.
    Mirroring state is SYNCRONIZED
    witness is down
    Principal is down
only mirror is up and running but couldnt come online.
I tried starting Witness , hoping that , mirror and witness are now connected and can form Quorum and make Mirror as Principal, but that didn't happen.
    I checked below command
    select name,state_Desc from sys.databases
and I can see it is in recovering state and couldn't come online.
I Even tried below so that startup is initiated and recovery can run on that database.
    use <dbname>
    go
IT throws me an error saying, quorum cannot be forum. Error is
Database %.*ls is enabled for Database Mirroring, but the database lacks quorum: the database cannot be opened.  Check the partner and witness connections if configured.
Question here is, even after starting my witness server , why it couldnt form a Quorum and why didnt Mirror wasnt able to become new Principal.
From the Database monitor tool, it is very evident that, Mirror and Witness are connected but only Pricipal is disconnected as it is down.
Eventually, when I started the Principal server (i.e A), it became as Principal and Mirror was Mirror (there's no change in role)
One more thing, I want to mention here is, I am not using FQDN's. Does it make any difference. I have installed 3 sql instances on my Desktop and worked on it.
Again, I have tested by bring the Principal down and it automatically failover to the Mirror server (i.e. B).
    Principal  --> TCP://TESTING-PC:5022
    Mirror     --> TCP://TESTING-PC:5023
    Witness    --> TCP://TESTING-PC:5024
Appreciate if someone can provide comments/suggestions on Scenario-1 and Scenario-2.
    Thank you in advance.

    Hello,
Seems you did not reffered to document i provided in question you asked about mirroring.Anyways I will try to answer your scenario
1.>>The mirroring state is SYNCRONIZED. Meaning no more log records to be sent to Mirror db.
Wrong assumption it means your mirroring is working fine and Principal is sending log records to mirror  and mirror is trying to make changes and commit it.Its not like, no log records would be sent.
If Witness is down no effect on mirroring  now if principal is also down your mirroring is gone and since Mirror database cannot for Quorum with witness no failover will happen and you need to manually break mirroring and bring Mirror DB online.
2.In second scenario you need first break the mirroring and then recovery on mirror database.Even if you start witness i Doubt it will form quorum
    --run this on mirror database
    use master
    go
alter database db_name set partner off
    go
    restore database db_name with recovery

  • Tech question - 1000's of folders ???

    Just a quick tech question.
Why does LR create 1000's of folders to hold the previews. One catalog has over 1600 folders, most of them empty. Between all my catalogs I have over 10,000 folders!
That really screws up searches on the hard drive, the backup takes a heck of a lot longer, etc. To say nothing about consuming large amounts of disk space just due to file/sector allocation.
There must be a reason for this... but what? After all, the previews don't even use the original file name, so it can't be for file name conflict resolution.

    >Say what they may, I'm convinced that LR in all of it's V1.0 versions is a knee-jerk rushed reaction to the utterly sudden appearance of Apple's Aperture,
Simply untrue...Lightroom (AKA Shadowland) was started Dec 2002 (in my studio I might addthat's how I know for an absolute fact when it started) and Aperture was started in the Spring of 2003. I know that because the Apple marketing guy writing the marketing spec for what would end up being released as Aperture interviewed me (the only contact I had with Apple with regards to Aperture).
So, you can "think" what you want as long as you want, but if you want to be correct, you really should change what you think. The full story (minus some proprietary stuff and some other stuff to keep from embarrassing certain peoplesome of who are gone from Adobe) was written in
    THE SHADOWLAND/LIGHTROOM DEVELOPMENT STORY.
    >This is why I say that LR doesn't feel like a 'professionally' designed program... the front looks great, but you look behind the makeup and it looks really amateur.
Uh huh. . .and how many software product development project have you been on? Care to post your creds that would make your opinion relevant?
On the Mac, the entire Lightroom Database Previews.lrdata is a "Package" which contains the subfolders and the preview.noindex files. On Windows, there isn't a similar construct as a "Package" so the previews are tucked into subfolders inside the enclosing folder named Lightroom Previews.lrdata So, what's your problem with subfolder containing the preview.noindex files? Is it because YOU think it's messy? Why?
In my main Lightroom catalog (which has about 78,000 images in it) the Lightroom Database Previews.lrdata package is about 36 gigs...these are generated preview files that Lightroom uses to avoid having to re-render each file you look at. Where should all this data be saved? Why should you care, in the least HOW it's organized? It's organized in a manner that Lightroom needs to be able to access it.
If you want to suggest an alternative organizational structure, go right ahead. Suggest...but, without an alternative organizational structure, what would YOU suggest the Lightroom engineers do? What would YOU do?

  • Mirroring Macbook Display on HDTV

    Hey,
I have my macbook connected to an HDTV through a mini dvi to HDMI cable, and it has been working great. Suddenly though, when Mirroring is on, the image on the TV is very strange, like the colors don't match up, and there are a lot of green and red blobs on the screen—sort of like what graphics were way back in the day with the old Commodores.
The image is fine if mirroring is turned off—any one know how to help me?

The mirroring selection is in the "Arrangement" tab and only shows up on the MacBook Pro LCD, not the external display.

  • Lots of questions before buying a macbook pro..help please!!

So I am about to buy a macbook pro in the next couple of days with these specifications:
    MacBook Pro, 15-inch
    Part Number: Z0EZ
    Backlit Keyboard/Mac OS - U.S. English
    Accessory Kit
    2GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM - 2x1GB
    MacBook Pro 15-inch Widescreen Display
    200GB Serial ATA Drive @ 7200 rpm
    2.6GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    SuperDrive 8X (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
After I get the computer I am going to upgrade to 4 GB myself (cheaper). This computer will primarily be used for video editing (I'm off to film school). Here come the questions!!
    1. This is probably a really stupid question, but the 15 inch macbook pro has an isight right?
    2. I am in need of an external hard drive (or two). I was thinking of getting 1 TB primarily for my video projects, and then another 250 GB hard drive for time machine. Are two external hard drives going to be too much for the computer to handle? What hard drive(s) do you recommend? Right now I am thinking a G-Tech 1.0TB Quad-interface hard drive and a 250 GB G-Tech hard drive (for time machine). Which leads to my next question.
    3. I would love to use eSATA with my TB hard drive...but there aren't eSATA ports included on the macbook pro (I think). So i researched and found the 2-Port NitroAV eSATA II 3Gb/s Professional Express Card (34mm). This would work with the computer right? Is eSATA necessary or should I just stick with firewire? I'm attracted to it because I will be editing video with the computer and I would love the increased speeds but I'm afraid it will overwhelm the computer.
Okay I think that's it! Any input will be greatly appreciated! Thanks

    1-yes
2-look at macsales.com, click on harddrives then all things fire wire. they have a lot of different drives ranging all the way up to a 2 tb setup (its 2 separate stripped raid set ups that are then mirrored against each other). they also sell some esata dives, not sure what size they go to but they hae them
fire wire 400 has some crazy top limit of drives you can chain together of like 40some odd so 2 will be fine, i have 2 running right now and no issues. i would suggest if you get the drives form OWC (macsales) you use the softraid program that comes with it.
3- you can get a pci card for the card slot which macsales also sells if you go though them so you dont have to go more than one place

  • PS2-- Macbook Pro-- HDTV

I'm posting on this board to see what you guys think.
I'd like to plug my Playstation 2 into my Macbook Pro (Via USB), and plug my Macbook Pro into my TV via DVI.
I'm trying this because I get a slight lag (.5 seconds) with the component cables when I plug in the PS2 directly to the TV.
My question: DO you think plugging the PS2 to the Macbook Pro via USB, then to the HDTV via DVI will cause the same or possibly more lag?
I bought this TV about 1 year ago, and I'm kind of upset Samsung left their video gamers to hang.

Sorry, but there's no way to get your PS2 to send its
video signal over USB. You're out of luck on this one.
And I'm sure you know, 100% definitely, this "fact." There is a way to get the video onto your computer via USB. You can buy a simple video capture device. Something like an EyeTV type box, where it can capture HD TV and transmit it to the computer. From there, you could output this image into your TV. You may experience either more or less lag depending on how quickly the computer and capture box can render the image.

  • Mirroring MacBook Pro onto AppleTV

All of my computers, peripherals, etc.. are all Mac and I just recently picked up AppleTV.
One of the functions that I have been really happy with is the option to be able to mirror my phone or pad onto my tv screen.
I have been reading though that some MacBook Pro's will mirror and some won't. How do I determine if mine won't?? Just the fact that the mirror option isn't in my display options?
I purchased the Macbook in June of 2011 so about a year and a half ago.
    15-inch, Early 2011

I echo your question(s) and concern(s) as I find that my mid 2010 macbook pro is not supported when it comes to airplay.  If you scroll right to the bottom of the Apple TV website you find the small print with regard to mirroring.  Unfortunatally I didn't read the small print until after I purchased Apple TV.  The website graphic of a MacBook misled me to believe my less than 2 year old purchase of a macbook would work.  So, the question in my mind that remains unanswerable by Apple Support... "why can a third party (AirParrot) get a mirroring function to work, but the geniuses at Apple development can't?".  Further, It strikes me odd that my system report even shows "Mirror" as OFF.  Almost like its a variable parameter that could be turned on if Apple wanted to turn it on. I did turn the mirror function on in my Display properties.  It struck me as odd that the property says "Show mirroring options in menu bar if available".  That was my first clue that I was in for trouble.  It's not often that one finds a property that is open ended like that.
Hummm... yet another newly released so called "feature" that is not backwards compatible.   Buyer beware.  I never thought I'd have to say that about Apple products.

  • How to connect my MacBook to HDTV troubleshooting

    Hey All,
So i went out and got all of the appropriate cables, i have a late 2008 black MacBook so I got the DVI to HDMI cable, and a separate cable for audio. I hook them all up, go to the proper input on my tv, and all i see is my desktop picture. No icons on the bottom, whenever i run a program (firefox, safari, anything) it does not appear on my HDTV. Do i need to have the MacBook closed (clamshell) after its hooked up and use an external mouse to make this work? what am i missing?
    thanks,

With this adapter. You will also need an HDMI cable.
