Tech Tool Pro

After I ran TechTool Pro yesterday, my external drives disappeared from my desktop. Today when I booted my computer, it couldn't find the external drive where Time Machine is stored. I'm not sure what happened nor how I can fix it.
Whoa, after the computer was on for 30 minutes, my backup drive suddenly appeared on the desktop. I'm not sure what's going on here.
Can anyone help?

Try repairing disk permissions.
Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select FirstAid, then click: Repair Disk Permissions. Quit DU when it's finished and reboot.

    We have an imac 2ghz Intel Core 2 running OS 10.6.8.
    I ran Tech Tools Pro 5 to rebuild directory, optimize files, optimize volume. It ran over nightbut seemed to hang up optimizing the volume.
    Now the HD doesn't mount.
    I've tried a few fixes. Including running disk utility from a CD. The disk utility says the directory is okay but doesn't see the HD to verify or repair permissions.
    I've tried zapping the pram and safe boot, neither of which worked.
    I've been able to use the computer by booting from an external start up hd.
    Oddly, I ran a Time Machine back up prior to running TTP, but for some reason the only back up I see is from 3 months ago.
    Not sure why the recent back up didn't happen, but were missing some very important recent docs.
    I downloaded a trial version of Stellar Pheonix Mac Data Recovery and it seems to be able to see all of the data on the main HD.
    I'm wondering whether or not to spend $100 for full version to attempt to restore content of HD to an external.
    If I do this, I assume I'll have to erase the HD and reinstall data from the Stellar Pheonix collection, hoping that it's all intact.
    Does anyone have any other suggestions to get the HD mounted????

    No, I don't think you want an erase at all, you want a freah external drive to recover to first off.

  • G5 will not boot from system disk or from Tech Tool Pro 5

    Hi everyone - Having a bit of trouble and hoped I might find some answers here.
    I suspect my system drive was having some issues as it sounded like it was being taxed and strained as I would open up applications from it. Upon verifying the disk using Disk Utilities, the test would stop short with the following message:
    First Aid Failed
    Disk Utility stopped verifying "Macintosh HD" because the following error was encountered
    Filesystem verify or repair failed
    In addition, an error message came up (in red) on the disk utility screen as well saying:
    Volume header needs minor repair
    The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired
    Error: Filesystem verify or repair failed
    Normally from here, I'd start up the computer from the Tech Tool Pro 5 disk (holding down C key upon restart). But when I did this, the computer never responded. Instead, the power was on but the screens went black and the computer went into a very quiet "idle" mode.
    After about a minute, the fans began ramping up pretty high (and loud). This went on until I finally had to manually shut down the computer by holding the power switch down for a few seconds. I didn't know what else to do. Those fans were not coming down (not even after 10 minutes).
    Anyway, I pushed the power button again and held the C key down. Still, nothing.... The fans stayed idle, for a little while and then ramped up again just like last time. I hit that same dead end and powered down the computer via the power button.
    Is there an alternate way to boot the computer from Tech Tool Pro or the original start up disks? I'm having no luck, here.
    I'm on my way into town to purchase a new internal drive (something with about 1TB of space) so that my pro apps can swim a little instead of being being bogged down on a 250G drive.

    The Install disk has version 10.4 on it. I have also tried booting from my OS 10.5 disk but with no avail.
    However, here is an update on my plight.
    Apple tech says that after hearing the symptoms, he thinks that one of the processors is shot. Being that my particular model of G5 (dual 2.7 processors) is a liquid cooled machine, it's possible that some sort of leak has formed and has either taken out a processor or has caused a processor to overheat. He says that this model of G5 has been known to do that. In this case, nothing will boot which makes me think that my original system drive may actually be okay. I'm taking it in for the tech to look at it and just be sure that's the problem. However, if it is a dead processor, the part alone would run $799 plus labor to install it. Frankly, that's just too much for me to pay to keep this old G5. I'd rather put that money towards a new or reconditioned Mac Pro 8 core or quad core machine.
    I've owned several Mac computers in the past and perhaps this is the frustration talking but it seems that no matter how diligent you are in maintaining your Macintosh, these machines only seem to last about 5 years before something majorly wrong happens (mother board, processor, etc). Can I expect this same, limited time frame from a new Mac Pro? I mean, am I just being paranoid?

  • Hung during Tech Tool Pro volume rebuild- what to do?

    Working on my ex's messed up 2007 MacBook 2.2ghz OS 10.5.8.
    Extreme heat problems, was hanging a lot, and Disk First Aid failed immediately with volume errors. With some diffculty, i got his critical files backed up to an external drive (he had no backup... i have no comment) and booted it with Tech Tool Pro 5 -retail DVD, not the applecare version- with OS 10.5.7 and it also immediately found trouble with the disk directory, tho the SMART parameters were all PASS except for internal temperature (which has been high enuf to warp the bottom of the case).
    But when i clicked Run Volume Rebuild, it hung in Acquiring Directory Structures. TTP's Elapsed Time clock stopped at 07:18... an hour ago. Fan is running like crazy.
    does this indicate what i think it might... a non-repairable hard drive?
    meanwhile, how do i get out of the TTP volume repair hang, pref without further damage? (HD was at least mounting and files accessible)
    clicking the "X" to stop it just makes it "tink" with no change.
    Trying to quit TTP causes an endless "canceling running jobs" loop.
    Should i just force shutdown and call it a day?
    He will probably buy a new Macbook rather than replace the drive in this one, and it'd be nice if the apple store could migrate directly from this drive ... unless it's really easy to migrate across two generations, leopard to lion, from the Time Machine backup i got on an external drive after the internal drive was already having trouble...? (i've never restored or migrated from Time Machine).

    The Protection module of the Safety suite saves directory structure information from each of my four drives to each of the four drives. The Diagnostics module checks the volume structures of each of the drives, and the Smart module runs the SMART routines to check each of the two compatible drives for any impending troubles.
    When I asked whether I could be assured the new version wouldn't behave the same way, the reply I received was:
    "There are very few reports of problems with the features configured in the TechTool Protection system preferences pane as of version 5.0.7. The previously-reported problems were difficult to reproduce, and solving them required a substantial rewrite of the code in earlier versions in the TechTool Pro 5.0.x series."
    I'm not convinced that was a 'yes.'
    Your iCal idea sounds interesting, but keep in mind that the Safety suite of modules are within the Tech Tool Pro application itself and, when automatically launched, run in the background without the main application itself launching. Meaning, that iCal might launch Tech Tool Pro at the correct time, but will it launch the modules within?

    Hello, I recently bought Tech Tool Pro 7, in ABOUT THIS MAC the info says (Mac mini MID 2011) but when I used for the first time Tech Tool Pro 7, the info was in the report was different, and the report says MAC MINI 2012, LOCATION CHINA... Any ideas? Wich is the year of my Mac?

    The About This Mac refers to the model, the Tech Tool Pro refers to its manufacture date and place.

  • Tech Tool Pro and/or Drive Genius (Background monitor)

    I have both Tech Tool Pro 6 and Drive Genius 3, acquired independently through software bundles. I installed both to test them out and now I have both background services running as well: DrivePulse (from Drive Genius 3) and Tech Tool Protection (from Tech Tool Pro 6).
    Both background processes monitor my system but I am pretty sure running both is overkill. Hence my questions:
    Would running both all the time cause problems? (so far so good for me...)
    If it is overkill, which one should I run and why? What are you preferences?
    Or should I not run any at all and just test my system once in a while with either app?

    In fact you don't need either. If you don't have a problem I would not use either one.

  • Tech Tool Pro and iMac 2009

    There is a disturbing message re: Tech Tool Pro 5 at its place in the Apple Store website

    Basically he says it corrupted his hard drive totally.
    I used to rely on an earlier version this software for my old G4 desktop and would like to know if the current version is safe to use on the iMac. Anybody using it regularly?

    I am a little touchy since one of my older Macs was ruined recently by a well-known anti-virus utility. The hard disk was rendered irreparable.
    Software cannot generally ruin drive hardware; it can cause data corruption, but a reformat should resolve that type of problem. In the case you mentioned, I would suspect that the hard drive was already becoming somewhat unreliable. The extra stress from doing frequent malware scans (which basically makes the drive accesses every used sector on the drive repeatedly) caused it to fail completely.
    Now that my data is backed up to within one hour using Time Machine, I am less likely to need a tool like TechTool Pro. If I had data corruption, I am more likely to use the +erase the drive and restore from backup+ approach, not the +repair the errors with TechTool Pro+ approach. The maintenance checks are useful, but the important checks can be done with Disk Utility. The optimization features are useful too, but not something that has to be done.

  • Error Message from Tech Tool Pro

    I've run Tech Tool Pro and got the following message:
    File is corrupt or is an unsupported file format: /Library/Frameworks/TSLicense.framework/Versions/A/Resources/EWSMac-GC.framewor k/Versions/A/Resources/lock_black.png
    I've opened the hidden Library folder and can't find a folder "Frameworks" in it so I'm at a dead end.  I'm not sure what that lock_black.png file does but I don't seem to have any problems.
    I was going to go in and delete it and see if a shut down/restrart would replace it with a good file.
    Can anyone help with this?  Thanks

    I have not tried disk warrior yet,but will. I had it stored until I could get screen, battery is dead, and to be honest I forgot which OS I have in it, If I can Get screen up maybe I can get my info.

  • Disk utility says SMART error but Tech Tools Pro says SMART passed

    Disk Utility on my Mac Pro (6GB ram, dual dual, 10.5.5) is saying my primary HD (a Seagate 1TB, one of three) has failed SMART. Tech Tools pro says it's fine and passes SMART (and all the other tests). I've got backups (Time Machine and tar files) and a new disk on the way. However I'd like to be able to know what exactly Disk Utility thinks the SAMRT error is - is there any way of finding our or is it opaque to the user?

    If the drive is possible defective, then you may be able to have it replaced at no cost because it's in warranty. Most drives carry at least a 3 year manufacturer's warranty. You would contact the manufacturer about a warranty replacement if your Apple warranty has expired. If you still have Apple's warranty in effect then contact AppleCare about the replacement.

  • Burned Big time by Tech Tools Pro

    Ran the copy of TechTools Pro that came with an Apple Care plan and it totally trashed the hard drive on my wife's iMac. I cannot believe it. What a disaster.
    The drive won't boot the computer, it won't mount when the computer is booted from an external drive. Its a complete loss.
    Luckily most of the data was backed up, although I am trying Data Rescue II to see what I can recover from it. (it was able to see a lot of stuff).
    The sad thing is that the iMac had only a few issues, which I decided to resolve with the tools provided by Apple. I guess that was a verry very bad idea.
    Any ideas what could have gone wrong? I have been using Macs for a long long time and have never seen anything like this.

    Although I could be mistaken or somewhat forgetful of all the details,
    I had heard the TechTool discs included with some Macs were not
    of the correct version and when applicable, a person could download
    an update to that specific version (perhaps from Apple?) and burn a
    new bootable disc by following some instructions.
    [I never did use the TechTool disc(s) that came with my (2) Mac's
    AppleCare Protection Plans. Never even opened them and had
    no expectations of wanting to use them. I'd used some TT items
    with Old World Macs and they were OK; back in the days when
    Nortons was OK, too. - I don't use or own Norton for Mac either.]
    Things like Disk Warrior, and ProSoft Drive Genius may be handy;
    plus a few others. I get by with the bootable Disk Utility in the OSX
    installer discs; and also have a full workable clone on an external
    FW-HD of my main machine. The external FireWire LaCie's 250GB
    partitioned for several 'full drive clones' to be saved in there; plus
    an empty partition for a spare. You can run various disk utilities
    from an installed external drive to do repairs they otherwise can't
    do from the booted optical drive application; from there, those
    can't access virtual memory or other system-wide features that
    make them truly functional. (I've only read about them; haven't
    done that with a third-party disk utility on my external FW drive.)
    If you haven't tried booting from the OSX retail installer or your
    computer's original install/restore system DVD (whichever is
    newest, if you have more than one) and running Disk Utility in
    the Installer's menu, to have it try and 'repair disk' you should.
    The same booted Disk Utility is also the keyway into serious
    zero-data/reformating and partitioning tools available to you;
    that basic installer boot disc. I rely on it first; plus making a
    clone of the system(s) when they are near perfect and are
    maintained; sometimes I use OnyX to do some stuff, too.

  • Boot Camp is no longer bootable after tech tool pro.

    Really need som guidance today!
    A few days ago i created an eDrive with techtool pro, honestly I don't know why I even did this my computer was running fine...curiousity I guess. I booted in to the eDrive and ran a volume optimization on my mac os 10.8.3 partition. This went on for 12 hours until about 96%, at which point it stopped and did not complete the process.
    When I tried to boot into Mac Os, the option appeared in the Alt/Option startup selection but when only a gray screen and then a crossed circle and nothing else. I solved this only by restoring my Mac Os partition with a Time Machine backup from over a month ago.
    Now, my boot camp partiotin is no longer available in the Alt/Option start up screen, and when I manually choose it in the Mac Os startup disk utility it loads to a black screen which read "no bootable volume, please insert startup disk and press any key". Disk utility recognizes the volume which is strange.
    I never had a DVD, and i installed windows using a USB iso image, which i of course lost. Now i am trying to create a USB in bootcamp assistant, but none of them are booting.
    What is going on?

    You have a recovery partition for repairing and reinstalling OSX (unless TT borked that as well). Reboot, press command and R at the sound of the chime.
    Use Disk Utility to repair (do not try to repair the Boot Camp partition) or choose Reinstall OSX

    I spent time with a Genius at the apple store yesterday. He had no success, but advised me to download tech tools and use it to try to retrieve files before reinstalling system software.
    Is there a version for the Macbook (Intel)? I have not been able to locate it.
    Here's the history of what's been done since I got the dreaded grey folder/question mark:(
    I used the Disk Utility/Repair Disk and got the following report:
    First Aid Failed
    Disk Utility stopped repairing "disk0s2" because the following error was encountered: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    Verify and Repair disk "disk0s2"
    Checking HFS Plus volume.
    (red font) Invalid B-tree node size
    Volume check failed.
    ERROR: The underlying task reported failure on exit.
    1 HFS volume checked
    (red font) 1 volume could not be repaired because of an error.
    I also performed the Hardware test on the startup disk and the report said there are no problems.

    Better check it with apple care, they maybe will offer a discount or give you the newer version for free.
    Or pre-owner tech tool pro might have upgrade discount from micromat (the vendor).
    Micromat is also working on an upgrade for TechTool Protege to support the new Intel-based Macs. Like the TechTool Pro 4.5 update, Protege owners will be offered a low cost update as well. Micromat expects to have this update available to Protege owners in approximately 30 days after the release of TechTool Pro 4.5. This update will include a convenient "flash" application that allows the user to quickly and easily configure Protege to the system(s) on which they intend to utilize the device. As with the TechTool Pro update, Micromat expects this update to ship on DVD media for $25.

    Is the surface scan on the tech tool important to use often? It takes so darn long. Someone told me not to bother with it. thx, sue

    I suspect my drive is bad so I've been running Tech Tool Pro tests. Everything seems to pass (Disk Controller, Read Write & SMART) but now I'm running Surface Scan. I understand that this is supposed to take long but what's "long"? Mine has been running for 5 days now...I'm assuming there's something wrong. Whenever I check it, it has progressed (currently scanning block 92288 of 976773168) but at this rate, it'll take a month to complete!
    Should I throw in the towel or is this what you guys mean when you say that Surface Scan takes long?
