Technology in the classroom

I am interested in using an Ipad in my classroom. Right now I have a projector and my laptop (mac). What do I need to use the Ipad in my classroom. Can I connect in directly into the projector? Do I need an Apple Tv?

That depends on the projector and the inputs or connections it has, and the generation of iPad you have.
Usage of the Apple Tv is not necessarry unless you want to have the connection be Wireless.

  • IPods apps in the classroom

I was wondering why Apple doesn't allow educators to sync up to 10 devices for each app like regular users.  My district has purchased all this Apple technology and we are limited by the license agreements for education.  I would like to purchase some apps for my classroom, but can only sync it to 1 device.  I'm stuck just using the free apps.
Why can't you make it easier for educators to use your technology in the classroom?

I think you should go to: http://www.apple.com/support/ipad/enterprise/ and maybe post further questions in:

Is there a way of connecting the ipad to the smart board in the classroom, so that the smartboard is the control, and the ipad is displaying what is on the smartboard? This is to help a visually impaired child see what is on the smartboard.

    Absolutely!
Install Splashtop2 on the PC and enable it to be controlled or ran from iPad or Reflection to simply allow iPad to serve as PC unwired monitor. With Splashtop and an Apple TV connected, you use the smartboard as usual, yet the PC and iPad can see the same content. The impaired child can even interact with the Smart Board via the iPad as if he were writing directly on the big screen. Erasing functions can be done by touching the Smart Board manual controls. Several variables are in play that cause this lack of functionality:
Apple won't permit PC software that infringes its proprietary apps.
Smart Board companies refuse to develop iPad apps because they feel threatened and are being replaced by iPads
School districts think Apple TV is meant for copyright infringement and could expose them to safe harbor lawsuits
Network administrators make it impossible to login Apple TVs because they don't want the streaming occurring
Classrooms are not able to keep up with the technology of using the iPad
Clicker companies refuse to play with iPad because they see it as a potential threat to their core business clients
Apple is not working as hard as it could to exploit its capabilities in education, thus losing money in iPad sales
The bottom line is that we educators and technology developers are hurting our childern with petty conflicts.

  • Dictation in the classroom

After Easter, I will be starting a project to develop the use of Speech Recoginition software in the classroom (Known as Dictation on Apple Products).  In the early days of this technology (15+ years ago) it was necessary to teach the software to recognise the speaker voice, inflections etc.  The computer developed a profile which constantly developed and was unique to an individual user.  Voice recognition works well on the ipads with no training .... but does it store a profile?
It is intended that a range of children use each Ipad .... does anyone know how Apple dictation works?  Does it keep a profile of each individual machine .... will it work well if a number of children use each machine.  Has anyone experiece of using this with a class of children?

It would appear I was wrong.  Your book is referring to this document from Apple:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4992
"the more you use Siri, the better it will understand you. It does this by learning about your accent and other characteristics of your voice. Siri uses voice recognition algorithms to categorize your voice into one of the dialects or accents it understands. As more people use Siri and it's exposed to more variations of a language, its overall recognition of dialects and accents will continue to improve, and Siri will work even better.
If you like, you can reset what Siri has learned about your voice by turning Siri off and then back on inSettings > General > Siri."

  • Ipad 2 in the classroom

I am a 4th grade teacher and we are writing a grant through our district for Ipads and smart technology.  I hooked up my ipad2 to my projector that projects to a promethean board.  I am hoping that someone out there knows of a way to used the promethean pen to interact on the ipad through the board.
On another note...If anyone has any great apps that are good for school please share.

For the latter, visit http://ipadeducators.ning.com/. A good resource for teachers on using the ipad in the classroom, as well as for the necessary tech support.
For the others - there is no way to use the promethean interactive board with the iPad. You can project onto it, but that's it - none of the other features involving the pen. For the Promethean (or any other IWB) to work, you'd need both dedicated software written by Promethean (they have not done so, and I was told by a rep they have no plans to do so because of...) a USB connection from the board into the iPad (i.e. a second "out" in addition to the 30 pin out, which is used for the VGA connector to the projector).
When you're connecting to an interactive board, you have two things going on: the projected display (which is the easy part - just the computer to the projector) and the interactive communication going on between the board and the software on the computer. There is no way to reproduce the second part on the iPad as currently designed.

  • Record videos to use on "Skype in the classroom"

Skype in the classroom, officially launched at the end of March 2011, is a free global community to help teachers collaborate on classroom projects and share skills and inspiration around specific teaching needs. It also offers an immediate way to help students discover new cultures, languages and ideas, all without leaving the classroom. So far, more than 9,000 teachers have registered their classrooms in this free, online database.
This new Skype community is a great and powerful teaching tool. Teachers can go online to register for free and add in their contact details, also find where their school is located and what their interests are. It makes teachers to collaborate on classroom projects where they might use Skype, and share skills and inspiration around specific teaching needs. Students can discover new cultures, languages and ideas without leaving the classroom. So, the learning will be more interesting and memorable. Students from any countries can also discuss images of their favorite foods, maps of their country's geography, and information on what kind of weather they have, even comparing school uniforms. It’s really exciting when Skype's videoconferencing technology was used. For example, one little American girl asked the Chilean students if they had to wear uniforms. To answer, a fifth grader popped in front of the camera and proudly showed off her "jumper with colored ties". It’s indeed a great way to get kids to learn more about the world they live in and interact with other kids. If you want to enroll your classroom in “Skype in the classroom”, visit Skype Education website.
Then, teachers on Skype in the classroom should definitely consider using a Skype video recorder to record or capture video and audio like Camersoft Skype Video Recorder to record the video calls so that the experience can be shared with other children. Especially, the ability to record the entire exchange in a single file – the video and audio of all participants in a side-by-side format – would make it very easy to share these cultural exchanges.
The resource section of Skype in the classroom is stacked with videos, links and tips. With recorder program, teachers can smoothly and easily add resources of their own or favorite the ones they like best to create a huge, shareable library of teaching ideas. This Skype video recorder can record video and audio, and then save it as AVI files. More powerful, teachers can convert AVI files to many other formats you want to play with any media devices and merge many single files into one to share with students conveniently on Skype in the classroom.

    Thanks!

  • Using iTunes and the iPad in the classroom

One of the schools that I support in our school district recently purchased two iPads.  We need to establish iTunes accounts that do not have a payment method associated with them.  We have setup the devices and are looking forward to downloading FREE apps from the iTunes store.  We have attempted to create our Apple ID in two different manners:
    1.  Go directly to iTunes on the iPad and select a free app.  Click download.  Prompted to setup an account.  Was not presented with the "none" option for payment.
    2.  Went directly into the iPad settings to "iTunes and App Store."  Again, no "none" option for payment.
Our department does not have access to a credit card nor a gift card due to funding.  I would appreciate any help that the iTunes department can provide to me about how to properly setup these iPads so that our students can utilize them in the classroom.
    Regards,
    Matt

    Greetings fcit@!A,
After reviewing your post, it sounds like you are not able to select none as your payment type. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help the issue.
Why can’t I select None when I edit my Apple ID payment information? - Apple Support
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
    Take care,

  • What accessories are needed to connect my Apple TV to my LCD projector (VGA connectors) in the classroom so that I can mirror my iPad for around the class teaching?

I have been wanting to project my iPad to my class and the only way I have found is to use the connector. However, I would like to remove myself from in front of the classroom and move around the classroom. This encourages students to take notes and not pass notes. This also encourages them to engage in questioning of the lesson, because the teacher is not far removed from them if they're in the back of the classroom. How can I connect? I've read some forums that discuss converters and many who say it needs to be active or powered, but some of these powered converters are nearly two times the amount of the Apple TV. I wouldn't mind paying if this is the suggested way and it works. I don't want to go through several failed and expensive experiments.

There are hardware converters that will convert HDMI to various other types of output, however there are some issues with doing so that you should be aware of.
    HDCP
HDCP compliant converters will not allow you to watch HDCP protected content such as that from the iTunes Store. Non compliant converters exist but we cannot discuss them under the Terms of Use for these communities.
    Resolution and aspect ratio
I'm not aware of any converters that will scale the output from the Apple TV, any TV or projector which is used will need to be widescreen and support resolutions of 720p (if you are using the Apple TV 2)

  • How can I use airplay in the classroom?

I want to use my iPhone in the classroom via airplay.  How do I do this without having to pay for an airport express?  Can I not just mirror the images wirelessly?

    Hi
To use airplay you need an airplay capable device such as Apple TV and an iPhone that is 4s or higher, mine is only 4 so I can't access airplay. Once both the Apple TV and phone or iPad are connected to the same wireless notwork you will be able to mirror your screens.
    I hope this helps.

I am a teacher and would like to know how to use the iPad in the classroom?

Since this is a user forum you might wish to do some Google searching on your topic. There are hundreds of ways an iPad could be used in the classroom both by teachers and students. Apple is very much involved in education so you may wish to look further into their programs, but that is not done on the forums but through Apple's website. For example, Students - Mac, iPod, iPhone, and iPad for college and Education - iPod touch and iPhone enable on-the-go and Education - iPad makes the perfect learning ...

    14th May 2013.
We placed an order on medIT (Medit Information Technology) for the following items:
    6 units of Apple iMAc-All_in-one-1 core i5 2.9 GHz-RAM 8GB-HDD 1x1tb-GF GTX 660M- Gigabit LAN-WLAN : 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.0-OS x 10.8 Mountain Lion- Monitor : LED 27”wide- keyboard: English.
We paid to their account; Bank of Cyprus Public Company Limited the full invoice value.
As of today 14th May 2013 we are still waiting for delivery of the goods despite numerous advices that a partial order of 3 items the order has been shipped.
We have made numerous follow up calls to medIT directly and through other customers of medIT, but we have no clue as to when we will receive the goods. On 29th April, 2013 they gave us a FEDEX airwaybill no..We regret that we have not been able to trace this airwaybill on the FEDEX system.
We are, therefore,  pleading for assistance from any support group to link us with the right department so that we can have accurate information on the movement of this parcel.
These items were ordered for a government department of the Republic of Zambia and this non-delivery is creating a bad name for Apple Resellers covering Zambian market. The project upgrade of the project is now falling behind due to non-delivery on our part arising from the non-performance on the part of medIT.
We can make available for inspection copies of the order and remittance details to the appropriate office for review and ready reference.
We can be contacted directly on “James A. Ngoma”
    <Personal Information Edited by Host>

If you ordered from MedIT in Cyprus, they do not appear to be an authorized Apple reseller. If they are indeed not authorized by Apple, there will be nothing Apple will be able to do to assist you in this matter. You will need to work the problem out with MedIT, obtaining legal assistance in Cyprus if necessary.
    Regards.

I am a teacher that uses the iPad in the classroom.  I have an itunes account setup for my classroom without a credit card listed. Is there anyway for me to purchase apps to use in the classroom with a Purchase Order?

(Being sarcastic - its because only the US is big or important enough to warrant volume licensing....)
At this time, until Apple decides to release volume licensing structures outside of the US the only solution would be to use your purchase orders with a company that sells the iTunes Vouchers and redeem those.
However - even then its hard to stay on the right side of the EULA when the terms are all couched in reference to "Personal Use"
I have spoken to some developers in the past about educational discounts, or even support for proxies, and wasn't really impressed with their answers.   But hey - even Adobe has trouble with proxies and consistent approaches - we can't expect independent developers to be able to match the same capabilities...

  • I recently got an iPad and want to use it in the classroom to teach history and geography, any suggestions of how I can?

I recently got an iPad and want to use it in the classroom toad in teaching history and geography, any suggestions on how to get started?

I assume you have a data projector to which you want to connect the iPad. You will need the appropriate lead. Is it written material you wish to display? What programmes is your information on?, eg, PowerPoint, Keynote, Pages, Word PDF's etc. A lot more information is required.

  • The event library and multiple users in the classroom

Is there any way I can stop the event library loading old footage or footage from another project in imovie. Is there any way i can have 3 or 4 movies on the go in separate files.
I have ten macbooks for my class of thrity kids. We have two users on the computer Admin and Student. All students use the student side, every time imovie opens it gets old footage and events from iphoto and by the end of each term there is 8 to 10 gigs of footage on the go at any one time. imovie HD allowed save, file open and movement of movies. imovie 08/09 seems brilliant for snow boarders and you tubers but not the classroom. Really we would love an editing package that allows attachment of camera and work for a couple of weeks on a project while others do the same thing on the same mac. Please don't suggest multiple users we have over 200 macs and 600 students.

Without multiuser, the only of having an exclusive event library for each student would be either external drive, or a blank disk image to store iMovie events. I can imagine a large network drive that has 50GB size disk images for each students. You mount your image to work with your footage.
By the way you can move event library to other drive within iMovie, so you can back up and disconnect external drive to unclutter event library.
