TechTool Pro – can't create an eDrive

After selecting Source Volume for eDrive and Mac OSX the Create eDrive button remains grey. I'm using TTP version 4.5.1

According to TechTool Help that's bundled with the software:
+The eDrive contains your basic Mac OS X system as well as a copy of TechTool Pro. If you ever have trouble with your normal startup volume, you can simply restart your computer from the eDrive. This will give you immediate access to the tools you need for recovery and repair. It eliminates the need for a bootable CD-ROM/DVD or ancillary hard drive for system volume repair or maintenance. This may be particularly attractive for use on a portable computer. With an eDrive installed you will not need to carry a repair CD/DVD with you on the road.+
I took that to mean you can create an eDrive on the built-in drive.

Export as ProRes 4444 if the title has alpha channel otherwise you'll lose the transparency.

  • Techtool Pro-Worthwhile Or Not?

I've heard/read a lot of mixed reviews of Techtool Pro, now at version 5.
Is it a worthy addition to one's diagnostic/repair tool chest?
    Whaddya think?

The most improtant element for your toolchest is a backup plan*:
    http://www.macmaps.com/backup.html
    Then depending on affordability:
    1. Hardware test disk that shipped with your Mac. Call AppleCare if you lost yours. If you bought from a non-authorized source, call them for the original discs, as they are not their's to keep. They will need to call AppleCare if they lost their's and give the discs to you. Hardware Test instructions are here:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303081 (for Intel Macs)
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86287 (for PowerPC Macs)
And Applecare's phone number is here:
    http://www.apple.com/contact/phone_contacts.html
    2. Data Rescue, Boomerang, Subrosasoft Filesalvage for data recovery in the rare event your backup isn't even restorable.
    3. Disk Warrior for repairing directories only of backed up systems.
    4. Techtool Pro can do the same as Disk Warrior although with a different approach, plus sometimes wakeup drives that otherwise won't spin up.
Defragging is rarely necessary, and should only be done on a backed up system. For more on why defragging is rarely necessary, see this article:

It is a hard one.. laptops with small drives are a pain.
What you need is a home media server.
Some people use a PC running itunes for cost.. but that is nothing like as good as using a Mac mini.. they make great little HTPC device.. you can plug in large hard disks and store all your files and media. And share it with the network.. Read up apple's instructions on home sharing.
    https://www.apple.com/au/support/homesharing/
For cost you can buy a mini from 2011 or 2012.. I would not recommend earlier ones.. the advantage of 2012 is they have USB3 ports. But you will pay more for them.. new mini is not as useful.. they have soldered in memory and you cannot upgrade.. the old mini was the most easily modified mac in the whole range. Uses little power and can be bought for a $300US for a good one second hand.. maybe less.

  • In creating a fillable PDF in XI Pro, can I insert a table which can be tabbed through?

In creating a fillable PDF in XI Pro, can I insert a table which can be tabbed through?

You're in luck. Create the first field and then right-click it (in Form Edit mode) and select Create Multiple Copies. You'll be able to specify how many copies of the fields to generate, and at what intervals. The nice thing is that although the properties of the new fields will be identical to the source one, they'll each have a unique name, so you'll get an instant "table" of fields.

  • Can't create a new project in Logic pro . Goes straight to a midi file. Do I shut something down before trying to create a new project

Can't create a new project in Logic pro . Goes straight to a midi file. Do I shut something down before trying to create a new project?

When you open Logic, close the project that its automatically brought up (see CCT's answer above, which explains how you can change that behaviour, if you like - I usually want to listen to the last thing I was doing, but its your choice - and then File>New.
So, yeah, you do have to close the currently loaded project first.

  • I Have iPhoto on my macbook pro under a different account, how can I create/install my own iPhoto?

I Have iPhoto on my macbook pro under a different account, how can I create/install my own iPhoto?

The iPhoto application should be installed in the "Applications" folder and thus available for all users on your MacBook Pro.
When you launch iPhoto from a different account hold down the ⌥-key, to be prompted where you want to create a new iPhoto library for that account. By default an iPhoto Library would be created in the "Pictures" folder of that user account.

  • HT5815 The update completely screwed up my computer! Now it won't start-up - it only goes into Terminal then shuts down. After three tries Techtool Pro opens in e-disk mode to repair the problem (which it can't find a solution). Great Apple - thanks !

Has this affected anyone else ?

Now is there a chance you could find another moment to explain WHY TTP is such a problem ?  I've used it for more than 10 years and it's only been an asset.
I realize you considered my response unhelpful, but my answer remains unchanged: uninstall it.
You explained that your Mac was unable to start. In that case the Apple Support article is the appropriate place to begin troubleshooting.
You also asked if anyone else had been similarly affected. Lacking an overwhelming response from a representative sample of millions of Mac users running the latest OS X release, any premise that the update caused this problem must be logically flawed. On the other hand OS X updates will very frequently reveal incompatibilities with third party software, especially those that modify the Mac's operating system. Techtool Pro is one of many that do.
TTP is also unnecessary in that it conveys no benefit. An example is the following: http://www.micromat.com/support-45/knowledgebase/ttp7kb/techtool-pro-has-found-b ad-blocks-what-do-i-do7
Solution: erase the volume, if it happens again replace the drive. Really?
TTP and similar utilities may be used to "repair" a damaged HD for the purposes of extracting whatever data remains intact, after an irretrievable data loss event has already occurred. Your very complaint illustrated that it was unable to do that. Conclusion: it's worthless.
... I decided to run the Mac Pro in Target Disk mode and run Disk Utility from my laptop on the suspect disk - it repaired (or so it says) the disk and now I'm copying ("restoring") all contents onto another disk that I can run further tests on later.
To be clear, Apple's Disk Utility accomplished what TTP could not.
Most likely, your HD is already in a failed state, so I don't recommend relying upon it. I do recommend that you extract its data, then replace the drive.
A failed HD will fail again, every time. Hard disks are cheap, and backups are essential. Having a reliable backup strategy makes events like this a non-event. If you want to keep the HD in service despite these cautions, I recommend you erase it as recommended by Micromat, do not reinstall TTP, and if it fails again replace it - also as recommended by Micromat.
I maintain many Macs for many people and have done so for many years. None of them have TTP or any similarly clever utilities installed. It's your Mac, do with it what you will, but if you choose to install such junk you own the consequences, which may be that it trashes your Mac.

  • Techtool Pro 4.0.1 eDrive

I had TechTool Pro installed on my computer when running System 10.2.8. Since upgrading to System 10.5.8 and in anticipation of using DiscWarrior I ran the “uninstall” program from the Techtool install disk. Techtool indicated all files had been deleted.
However, I still have the Techtool eDrive on my hard drive. Disk Utility shows the eDrive within my startup drive.
What do I need to do to clear the eDrive?

    Stefan,
it is not very clever to admit you pirated (=stole) Tech Tool Pro on Apple's official web-site. It is definitely against the rules to post about it and even more against the rules (and the law) to ask for serial numbers. Don't be surprised if your post gets deleted soon.

    Try Prosoft Data Rescue first:
    http://www.prosofteng.com/
And if that doesn't work, the new Disk Warrior 4.0:
    http://www.alsoft.com/
If neither works, you may need to get it to a data recovery specialist.
Always in the future have at least two copies of your data at all times, by backing it up as my FAQ explains:

  • I want to I create PDFs on my new Macbook Pro, can someone recommend a good software program via apple store?

I want to create PDFs on my new Mac Pro, can someone recommed a download from Apple IStore?

The Mac OS has built-in PDF generation. Anthing you can print, you can create a PDF.
In some apps like Preview, you can do "Save as..." to create the PDF:
In other apps you have PDF options at the bottom left of the "Print..." dialog box:
Basically you have no need to spend money to create simple PDFs.
