Tecra 8000: "EC/KBD Update" request on Power-On

Hello!
I couldn't start my Tecra 8000 because it says:
"Ready for EC/KBD Update. Place the EC/KBD update diskette in the drive an press any key to proceed".
I couldn't avoid this message, I remove batt / ac-adaptor, all drives, clean the keyboard - but nothing, I get alyways this message.
Does anyone have an idea?
TIA!
Marc

Hi,
For this message to appear normally the user would have to press a certain key combination at startup.
The fact that your machine is doing this constantly would suggest that there is either a problem with the keyboard (maybe liquid spillage) or that there is a problem with the keyboard controller.
The latter may need a new system board.
If you are competent then you could try dissconecting the keyboard and connecting an external one.
The other alternative is to take it to a Toshiba repair agent and ask them if they would update the EC/KBC for you - this is a simple procedure from a floppy disk and takes about two minutes.
regards,
Nick

  • Tecra 8000: Does Bios Update enable booting from USB?

    Hello
    I have Toshiba Tecra 8000 (PentiumII 266MHZ)
Will this bios bios-t8000-930-trad.zip (08/26/02) enable boot from USB ?

    Hi
Im not sure about that. Your BIOS version is 020 but on the Toshiba website I have found a BIOS version 9.30. Well, it seems that this version is newer but Im not sure if it allows you to use the 40GB HDD.
Some Tecra 8000 models were delivered with a 14 GB HDD. In my opinion it should be possible to use a 20 or maybe a 30 GB HDD but its difficult to say if the bigger HDD size will work.
You can ask the professional HDD dealer or a ASP for further informations.

    Hi Tomek,
Unfortunately you will not be able to load an older version of the BIOS. The BIOS update utility automatically checks that the version being loaded is more recent than that already installed and if it is not it will not be loaded.
To revert to an older BIOS you will need to go to an Authorised Service Partner who can 'flash' the BIOS chip to remove the current BIOS and then load the earlier one.

  • BIOS Update for Tecra 8000 without Floppy Disk

I searched in this forum for a solution to update the BIOS without a floppy drive. The only one i found was this thread [http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=66966&tstart=0] , but there is no .iso file for the tecra 8000 series.
is there any solution to get the new bios installed on my tecra 8000 without any floppy drive ?

I have checked Toshiba BIOS download page on http://www.toshiba.eu/innovation/download_bios.jsp and TRAD BIOS version is offered. This old Tecra is maybe 10 years old and at this time Toshiba has offered traditional BIOS update only.
Win versions are offered later with newer Tecra 9000/9100.
    Sorry.
Maybe stupid question now but why do you need BIOS update?

  • Tecra 8000 Bios update

Hi. I am in the process of upgrading an old Tecra 8000 for my 4 yr old grandson as a first laptop. I have put the max 256 ram in and am now installing winxp pro. What I want to know is can I update the bios with the Toshiba update for it that was for win98? Its the Tecra 8000 PII 300 PAT 800
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Tecra 8000
The BIOS has been upgraded for Windows 2000 (Windows NT 5.0). So it should be okay for XP (NT 5.1).
ACPI Flash BIOS version 9.30 for Tecra 8000
But I have no idea which of the Windows 2000 drivers will work for XP.
I would install Windows 2000 myself. It does not require activation.

  • Tecra 8000 - BIOS Update & XP or ME installation?

I've been given the task of sorting out a friends Tecra 8000 laptop which is totally riddled with spyware and viruses. Having killed most of the infections I've backed up what I need to and decided the best course of action is an OS rebuild.
I don't know which OS to suggest he installs. Will ME install and make use of Win98 drivers or is this not advised (I have no experience with ME)?
Would XP be a better choice with its own drivers (have read posts on here that SP2 causes slow-downs though)?
With either of the above OS's will a Bios Update be necessary? If so does the 9.30-trad Bios update require a 500MHz + CPU? Will the Bios tell me the CPU speed?
I have found all info on how to install Bios updates; I'm just checking that I can install the 9.30-trad on a Tecra 8000 with a lower spec processor?
    Many thanks,
    jbw

I haven't even got that far. I can't update the BIOS as I don't have a floppy drive and I want to do this before I put XP on it. :(
I've tried the 'make a bootable cd in Nero trick' but the tecra 8000 doesn't read it. I hold the F12 key and switch on the machine. It goes to the BIOS update screen and asks to press any key. I press any key and it doesn't do squat with the CD. I've tried various boot sequences but none seem to make any difference.
Perhaps I've made the boot cd wrong? I just extracted the files to the floppy disk - thats what I gathered from the readme. Am I meant to extract the files to temp folder and run an executable to make the boot disk?
Or perhaps Tecra 8000 doesn't work with bootable CD?
    Any help most appreciated. :)

  • Video Out - Tecra 8000

I have a Tecra 8000 with Windows XP Pro installed.
Everything works beautifully I have updated the BIOS to v9.3 - BUT I can't get the video out connections to work.
I have tried the RCA plug on the back, and also connected the SVGA dongle to the side jack and used the composite video out on that, but no signal seems to come out of either of them.
I have tinkered with the various different BIOS settings, used the Fn+F5 key all to no avail.
I have read in the forum here that others have the same problem, so I'm adding a plea for help with this one too. Can I ask, has ANYONE managed to actually get a composite video signal out of their Tecra?

    Hi Peter
If your Tecra is preinstalled with Toshiba Recovery CD all drivers and tools should work properly. In this case there are, in my opinion, two possible reasons why this not works. Either is notebook the cause for this issue or there is some problem with the TV and TV setting.
Using FN+F5 key combination you can switch to external device. It will be interesting to know if this works properly with external monitor. It is not the same port but the tool is the same. You can also try to connect your notebook to another TV. It is sometimes not easy to say what the problem can be. If there is no way to have some success you need some professional help. Maybe the service partner can make a short check of composite video out port.

  • Tecra 8000: Question about AC adaptor

    In bad englisch sorry.
The power suply of my tecra 8000 isn't working it's not the wire but the reciever? in the notebook. I have a new notebook but there are some files inside the tecra and because I don't have power I can't reach it. Does anyone nows a solution that doesn't cost me a lot of money?
    greetings H

If a new charger doesn't fix this problem, another solution would be to use a Tecra 520 docking station if you can find one cheaply. This also supports the Tecra 8000 (but not Tecra 8100, 8200). This will power the laptop via connections on the underside of the unit and so avoid the broken DC socket.
Of course you wouldn't be able to use the laptop as a portable, but it would at least provide a solution to enable you to retrieve valuable data.
Another thought: If the data is important to you, you could remove the hard drive and insert it in to the caddy of another (working) Tecra 8000 laptop.

  • Tecra 8000 notebook - display with almost ZERO luminosity

    Hi all,
I have a problem with luminosity settings for my Tecra 8000.
I have lowered the luminosity to minimum values but now I am not able to bring it back to a "visible" level.
Thank you for any advice you may have.... it is just frustrating!

    Hi
When the computer operates on power through the AC adaptor, the display screens image ill be somewhat brighter than when it operates on battery power. The lower brightness level is intended to save battery power.
If you start the computer with the AC adaptor plugged in and unplug the computer during operation, the brightness level wills not decrease even though the computer is operating under battery power. In this case battery operating time will be shortened.

    Hello
Sorry but I really dont know what you mean. Did you have some problems with the AC adapter or with the battery charging procedure?
I cant give you now a proper answer of your problem. Maybe you can describe your problem more detailed.
But nevertheless its sound like a power supply issue. In this case I would recommend to contact the service partner.

  • Tecra 8000/windows98se registry

I have a tecra 8000 that has an intermittent startup fault
when its been off for a while. Next boot it has error messages about windows registry and will shut down to repair registry, once it boots properly it is ok , including restarts, unless you leave it for a few hours or the next day. Has anyone any idea what could be the cause

    Hi Barrie,
Thanks for the reply, I thought it would be in the windows registry too, so since the first post I uninstalled all the programs,(Which have been installed and working ok for about 6 months) but it still had the problem, so I wiped the hard drive,(fdisk, reformat, reloaded operating system)to start fresh, but would you believe it did the same thing. I dont know if the bios could make any difference, but I thought about updating that too, just to cover all bases, but there is no floppy drive and I dont think I can update bios from cd-rom.(I dont have access to an external floppy). Maybe I'll load only the operating system and see what it does

The APP update request came for 4 apps.  I submitted update all, but the system is stuck and will not update. Further, I cannot use those apps.  How do I fix this?

Two other things to try -
Power your iPad off for a minute and then back on again.
Double tap the Home button, locate the updating apps (one by one) in the bottom task bar, press on it until the red minus sign comes up and click it. Repeat for the remaining apps. Try the updates again but do them one by one rather than Update All.

  • Tecra 8000: Missing OS, how to install

I have this old Tecra 8000 and it had Win ME on it. I used some software called Kill Disk, and after reboot I get "OS Missing".
I have a bootable CDR with a (legal) copy of XP Pro on it. But nothing happens when I insert the CD, it runs for a while but the "OS Missing" message remains. I have tried to reboot with the CD inserted, but nothing but the message.
It's and old comp but I still want it to run, there are no mechanical failures, so...any help much appreciated.

First account did not allow me to login, so I made a new account.
Anyway, I can not alter my BIOS since the boot process is only about 1 second. All I have is the Toshiba logo followed by the OS Missing message. I know my way around the settings in the BIOS, boot order and all, but this I dont understand. I do not have a command line or anything, just this annoying message.
If I start the comp while pressing F12, I get a message about how to insert a BIOS Update Diskette.
    - So I downloaded the latest BIOS update, copied it to a 1.44 MB floppy and inserted it into an external floppy drive. Well, that did not work out, probably some USB error?
    - I tried to burn the update files to a CDR, start the comp while pressing F12, inserting the CD on message, but no response either :(
Any other suggestions on how to solve this?

  • Tecra 8000: battery will not charge

I have a Toshiba Tecra 8000 laptop working excellently on radio but cannot get a battery to charge! I have 2 new batteries but when I go to power options it says battery not detected. However if you switch the mains off the computer will work on battery for a few minutes.
Is there anything I need to do to charge the battery because it rather negates the radio broadband if I cannot charge the battery.
    Thankyou in anticipation
    Roy Drysdale

    Hi
Do you use the compatible and supported batteries?
I think you should use the batteries recommended by Toshiba.
But if you have purchase the right and compatible batteries so in my opinion there could be only a hardware malfunction. Unfortunately, its not easy to say what could be wrong.
But mostly its something wrong on the board.
As Pedro already mentioned the notebook should be checked by a technician. You know the guys have more experience as a common user like you and me.

  • Tecra 8000: Can't boot - Message "Insert system disc in drive" comes on

I have a Tecra 8000 that I have not used for about two months. Now when I try to boot up the message 'Insert system disc in drive' comes on to the screen. I have tried three system disks but they have not been accepted and the same message appears. I have been in to the 'setup' and changed the priorities and tried FDD, HDD, CD-ROM and the same message appears each time. Is it possible that the internal 'backup battery' is totally discharged?

    Hi Alan
maybe it doesn't sound so cool in your current situation, but there is actually something really good with the Toshiba's. It doesn't matter how bad the CMOS-battery becomes or even if you remove it. The system will always automatically detect the installed HDD (as long as it is working and within the specs) and set it up for you.
That means in your case that there might be something that is physically defective. But before accepting that, please try to use the Boot device selection menu.
Please grab a diskette or CD that you KNOW are bootable (best by testing on another system).
Power on the Tecra 8000 and while seeing the TOSHIBA-logo, press F2 repeatedly. You should now get a textlist with bootable devices to choose from.
Pick the one that you have a bootable media in (f.ex. the recovery CD's in the CD or a clean Windows media).
    Good luck
    Tom
