Tecra 8000 Laptop

Hi,
Has anyone had any success or even tried to install on this laptop?
It goes fine until the display settings, I can only choose the default 640 screen, and I don't want that. in the specs sheet from toshiba it states Intel 440BX that is the chipset used, but when you go to the driver on the toshiba site it says it's Neomagic. Should I give up or is there suggestions anyone can give me?????

thanks for the info, I will keep this link bookmarked,
They are not showing the Tecra 8000. guess I will have to keep checking.
THANKS!

  • Solaris 7/8 on Toshiba Tecra 8000 Laptop - Possible?

This could be an easy one or one that has to go to Toshiba but I've been trying to get Solaris 7 loaded onto a Toshiba tecra 8000 laptop and can't get a 'fit' for the screen size. I've looked on the tested h/w list and can't see it listed so just wondered if anyone has used this platform for Solaris 7 and what they used? It's a 1024x768 screen. Any help appreciated.

I added Xig's Accelerated X server. With it I use 1024x768 screen and desktop
though I have also played with a larger virtual desktop at same resolution.

  • Tecra 8000 laptop doesn't start up

Hello. I have a Tecra 8000 that I have been using for 3 years without any problem. I recently gave it to someone, doesn't matter who, but she gave it back to me saying that it stopped working.
The problem with it is it doesn't startup, it gives me the TOSHIBA logo, then the screen of "Windows 2000 is starting up" and then again TOSHIBA logo and again "Windows 2000 is starting up". This just continues for ever.
One of my frieds said that the NETDETECT.COM file might have been tampered with. But how do I get it back up and running if I cannot go past these 2 screens. Help Please.
    Cheers

    Hello Sam.
Thank you very much for your reply. I have looked up the KB entry and it seems useful. Unfortunately, my laptop is not responding to "safe mode" either. I tried all the options like "debugging mode" but it just keeps spinning between the 2 screens.
One of the related KB entries (244905) talked about using "Recovery Console" to resolve problems like this. But for this I need my Win2K CD-ROM, have to find who at the college borrowed it from me. I will let you know once I tested with the CD-ROM.
It is 4Am and I can't sleep, this laptop problem is haunting me.
    Cheers

  • Screen resolution on my Tecra 8000

    Ok..
I have a toshiba tecra 8000 laptop with windows xp.
The pc started with 800 x 600 the wrong resolution (i had black spaces beside my screen, all sides) so i turned it in windows to 1024 x 768 whitch works perfect. Now the screen is fully filled with urz.. screen :)
    But...
It only seems to be changed in windows. When i start a game or some other program it starts in a small 800 x 600 (?) or some other resolution and leaves black spaces. When i start the laptop the resolution is also wrong (u see the dos (?) tekst starting somewhere close to the middle of the screen) its only changed in windows :(
how can i solve this problem (if it has something to do with the bios or something... hope you can tell me how to solve this problem!
    i would be very happy

    Hi
Please check stretch function in the BIOS and try it again.

  • Tecra 8000: Question about AC adaptor

    In bad englisch sorry.
The power suply of my tecra 8000 isn't working it's not the wire but the reciever? in the notebook. I have a new notebook but there are some files inside the tecra and because I don't have power I can't reach it. Does anyone nows a solution that doesn't cost me a lot of money?
    greetings H

If a new charger doesn't fix this problem, another solution would be to use a Tecra 520 docking station if you can find one cheaply. This also supports the Tecra 8000 (but not Tecra 8100, 8200). This will power the laptop via connections on the underside of the unit and so avoid the broken DC socket.
Of course you wouldn't be able to use the laptop as a portable, but it would at least provide a solution to enable you to retrieve valuable data.
Another thought: If the data is important to you, you could remove the hard drive and insert it in to the caddy of another (working) Tecra 8000 laptop.

  • Help needed by installing wireless to an Tecra 8000

I have just bought the wife an old tecra 8000 laptop and would like to run wifi on it, I bought a d-link router and a d-link usb adapter but it said I needed a hi-speed usb, and it wouldn,t pick up the router, would a pcmia card work better, also can anybody suggest a modem/router and card that works on it,any help is much appreciated....

    Hi
The Tecra 8000 supports only the USB 1.1 standard.
The high speed USB ports are 2.0
Many USB devices are designed only for the USB 2.0 and I assume your USB WLan adapter supports also only the 2.0 standard.
The PCMCIA should work better. There is no standard limitation like on the USB ports.

  • Tecra 8000: battery will not charge

I have a Toshiba Tecra 8000 laptop working excellently on radio but cannot get a battery to charge! I have 2 new batteries but when I go to power options it says battery not detected. However if you switch the mains off the computer will work on battery for a few minutes.
Is there anything I need to do to charge the battery because it rather negates the radio broadband if I cannot charge the battery.
    Thankyou in anticipation
    Roy Drysdale

    Hi
Do you use the compatible and supported batteries?
I think you should use the batteries recommended by Toshiba.
But if you have purchase the right and compatible batteries so in my opinion there could be only a hardware malfunction. Unfortunately, its not easy to say what could be wrong.
But mostly its something wrong on the board.
As Pedro already mentioned the notebook should be checked by a technician. You know the guys have more experience as a common user like you and me.

  • Tecra 8000 - BIOS Update & XP or ME installation?

I've been given the task of sorting out a friends Tecra 8000 laptop which is totally riddled with spyware and viruses. Having killed most of the infections I've backed up what I need to and decided the best course of action is an OS rebuild.
I don't know which OS to suggest he installs. Will ME install and make use of Win98 drivers or is this not advised (I have no experience with ME)?
Would XP be a better choice with its own drivers (have read posts on here that SP2 causes slow-downs though)?
With either of the above OS's will a Bios Update be necessary? If so does the 9.30-trad Bios update require a 500MHz + CPU? Will the Bios tell me the CPU speed?
I have found all info on how to install Bios updates; I'm just checking that I can install the 9.30-trad on a Tecra 8000 with a lower spec processor?
    Many thanks,
    jbw

I haven't even got that far. I can't update the BIOS as I don't have a floppy drive and I want to do this before I put XP on it. :(
I've tried the 'make a bootable cd in Nero trick' but the tecra 8000 doesn't read it. I hold the F12 key and switch on the machine. It goes to the BIOS update screen and asks to press any key. I press any key and it doesn't do squat with the CD. I've tried various boot sequences but none seem to make any difference.
Perhaps I've made the boot cd wrong? I just extracted the files to the floppy disk - thats what I gathered from the readme. Am I meant to extract the files to temp folder and run an executable to make the boot disk?
Or perhaps Tecra 8000 doesn't work with bootable CD?
    Any help most appreciated. :)

  • Tecra 8000 composite video out

I am trying to direct video output from my tecra 8000 via the yellow video composite jack at the back of the unit. I thought it was as simple as pluging in both sides of an RCA jack (one end to the video input of a VCR and the other end into the Tecra video jack).
I get NOTHING on the screen. What am I doing wrong?
    Thanks in advance

I had already tried that with no results. There is also a 7 pin canon connector on the side of the laptop. This was provided with units that came with a DVD-ROM. Normally there would be a modem port there. I believe this round connector is for "S-Video" output. I was going to buy a cable for this, but like the composite video output, I'm afraid there is no video signal going to either port. The manual just talks about the port on the back of the unit and it doesn't say anything other than placing an RCA cable between it and a TV or VCR that has the same input port. It's really neither here nor there if I can get this to work, I'm just a little stumped is all.

  • Tecra 8000 does not recognize new HDD

I read this forum and searched Google, but nothing helps.
I think the HDD on Tecra 8000 ( Pentium II , 266 Mhz ) is "dead".
I tried to replace it with one from another laptop to see if that would work.
The laptop doesn't recognize it, although I put everything back as the original.
Is there a special way or do I have to change something in the Bios?

    Hi
The BIOS settings dont need to be changed
As long as you use the compatible HDD, the BIOS should recognize the HDD automatically without any big troubles
What HDD did you use? What size, interface, etc
The Tecra 8000 is a oldie and I think you could use only the 4GB; 6GB; 9GB; 10GB; 14GB IDE HDDs.
Bigger HDDs would be not recognized by BIOS.

  • Tecra 8000 wireless link

I have obtained a Tecra 8000 with a 10/100 Network port replicator that will be used as a second desktop at home. On my main PC I use a Netgear DG834G ADSL wireless router (802.11g) for a broadband connection. What is the best way to make a wireless connection with the Tecra ?
There appear to be a number of cardbus adapters (eg Netgear WG511)or USB adapters (eg WG111).
    Is the Tecra 8000 USB v2 or v1.1 ?
I could simply put the router close by and use the ethernet link but I would rather have the laptop away from the available phone sockets. Is it best to test the LAN connections etc in this manner before attempting the wireless link?
Regrettably I have cross posted this on the Tecra forum before I discovered this one. My apologies

I have the same router and use a Netgear WG511T...works very well. Just install the software that comes with the wireless card and plug it in...that's about it. You can then network the two computers together...if you're running XP on both it's pretty automatic (just run the network wizard on both machines).
You can of course hard wire your Tecra into the router...but as you say a wireless link is far more versatile and after all, that is what the DG834 is designed to do.
Make sure the drivers for the DG834G and the network card are the most up to date ones. You may have to reconfigure the router to allow a new computer to log into it...but that's not too difficult

  • Tecra 8000: No memory area available to communicate with PC Card

I have a Tecra 8000 running Win98 SE and use a 3Com PCMCIA Card for my Internet Connection. I was troubleshooting my computer on another issue and in the process disabled the PCMCIA Toshiba ToPIC Cardbus Controllers. After enabling these again I am no longer able to communicate with the PC Card and therfore cannot connect to the Internet.
PC Card Troubleshooting Agent states: 'Windows is not able to identify or use the inserted PC Card Device because there is no memory area available to communicate with this device. You must make a memory area available before this device can be used. Check your computer's CONFIG.SYS file for a memory manager that is excluding upper memory regions between A000 and FFFF'.
My Cardbus Controllers are set as follows:
    1.Memory Range - 0C000000 - 0C000FFF
    2.Memory Range - 0C001000 - 0C001FFF
My PC Card (PCMCIA) Properties are as follows:
    Card Services Shared Memory:
    Start 000C0000
    End 00FFFFFF
    Length 00001000
Whilst the PC Card Modem is being recognised in the Port it cannot be communicated with and the error message is shown as follows:
'Error 666: The modem is not plugged in or is out of service. Connect a modem to your computer and try again'.
When I run Modem Diagnostics there is no response except for the following:
    'Open Comm: Couldn't open port'
Any help or advice will be much appreciated.

Hi Evan, I have had 2 PC cards damaged during bad thunderstorms in the past. Recently i helped someone to set up her Tecra8000 during another thunderstorm her new extension cable blew up silently! At first i didn't suspect it as the cable was brand new (cannot open port etc). Anyway, i tested the cable with a phone n it was dead and then i got a new extension cable for her from Argos the next day n it worked perfectly!
If ur card is broken then i suggest u get a Phonic PC card V.92 from PC World. It's only 14.99 n the connection speed is surprisingly fast 112.5k ! (I used to pay for 50 !) faster than my new fancy laptop, the internal modem can only connect at 44k !
Hope this helps. Let us know.
PS I have since upgraded her laptop from Win98 to XP, it works rather well on the Tecra8000 (so far so good, she even managed to get her new printer working under XP without asking for my help!). if ur laptop meets the requirements, it MIGHT be worth considering upgrading it to XP.

  • Tecra 8000: PC Wireless Card is not recognised

I am trying to conect my Tecra 8000 to my wireless router, but the card is not recognised when I plug it into the laptop, it is recognised in my satelite. I have tried running windows 98 and now 2000 but his makes no difference.
Is there anything I should be doing?

We have a PCMCIA WLAN card running on our Tecra 8000 but it needed upgrading to Windows ME before the drivers were properly functioning, although the handbook coming with the card claimed it would run on Windows 98 SE too. After browsing through several internet support forums, this was the only solution that turned up, and in Windows ME it is running very stable (although comparibly slow by today's standards).

  • Tecra 8000 & USB disks

    Hello,
Is it possible to use a USB disk (data and/or audio) with the Tecra 8000? USB disks didn't exist when i first bought the laptop but floppy disks as you all know.
I've tried but the message "unable to find a drive " or something like that pops up.
    Thank you for your help.
    Dino

    Hi Dino
I dont have this oldie but I do not see any problem there. in the whole story important is data transfer speed. Older notebooks have USB1.1 and it is much slower that new USB 2.0 standard.

  • Tecra 8000 - CD-ROM defect - fitting new drive ?

The CD-ROM of my Tecra 8000 has a defect. It tries to load a CD-ROM, LED is blinking, it stopps and then the drive LED is permanently on.
So i assume the drive is busted.
What kind of new CD-ROM is fitting to this laptop ? Only Toshiba original ones ?

    Hi
Wow, the Tecra 8000 series is really old. Are you still using this notebook?
It feels like the notebook would come from the Stone Age ;)
However, I think the CD/DVD drive supports *IDE* interface but not all drives would be compatible because of the slave/master/cable select settings
It looks like DVD-ROM drive +Toshiba - SD-C2002+ would be compatible.
Not quite sure if you will be able to get such drive because of the device age but probably the Toshiba authorized service provider in your country could provide some compatible optical disk drives
