Tecra 8000, linux & ethernet & pnp

Hi,
I'm trying to install Linux on a Toshiba Tecra 8000. The problem is the PCMCIA ethernet card with a Realtek chipset (module: 8139too), which is recognized but the network is unusable. I always get an SIOCSFFLAGS-error and the interrupt assigned is 0, which means it failed. I read a lot of times that I should turn off plug and play, but there is no option when I boot with a floppy and run TSETUP.EXE. Is there any alternative to do this? Do you have any other hints?
Thanks, Thomas

Hi,
perhaps the following site will help you to solve the problem.
These are 2 official Toshiba linux sites and there are also some tips.

PS: You could also enter the BIOS if you will press the ESC key immediately after turning the NB on!

  • Tecra 8000: Desk Station V + chipset/HDD on Debian Linux?

    Hi!
I have a Toshiba Tecra 8000 and a Desk Station V , currently running Debian Linux.
The HDD I have in my docking station is working, but very slow (and I know that this is not the drive itself, it is working fine in another computer). I can't seem to enable DMA ("HDIO_SET_DMA failed: Operation not permitted", is it even possible for docked hard drives?), but it works with the internal one.
The internal HD (hda) gets fairly decent speeds, but the external (hde) is working at a snail's pace:
    ulmo:/etc# hdparm -t /dev/hda
    /dev/hda:
    Timing buffered disk reads: 14 MB in 4.94 seconds = 2.83 MB/sec
    ulmo:/etc# hdparm -t /dev/hde
    /dev/hde:
    Timing buffered disk reads: 2 MB in 3.92 seconds = 522.50 kB/sec
Any suggestions? An does anyone know if the Desk Station V requires any chipset/IDE controller configuration and/or support?
    Thanks for any help whatsoever.

    Hi
As far as I know the Desk Station V Plus expends additional features to Enhanced Port Replicator II's as follows:
one PCI/ISA bus and one PCI bus expansion slots, a 5-inch drive bay,
a Selectable Bay, and an on-board SCSI-2 (Small Computer System Interface) controller.
I have found also a information in the net that the Desk Station V plus support also only the UDMA2.
Well, I think the internal notebook interface is a little bit faster as the DSV .

  • Tecra 8000 wireless link

I have obtained a Tecra 8000 with a 10/100 Network port replicator that will be used as a second desktop at home. On my main PC I use a Netgear DG834G ADSL wireless router (802.11g) for a broadband connection. What is the best way to make a wireless connection with the Tecra ?
There appear to be a number of cardbus adapters (eg Netgear WG511)or USB adapters (eg WG111).
    Is the Tecra 8000 USB v2 or v1.1 ?
I could simply put the router close by and use the ethernet link but I would rather have the laptop away from the available phone sockets. Is it best to test the LAN connections etc in this manner before attempting the wireless link?
Regrettably I have cross posted this on the Tecra forum before I discovered this one. My apologies

I have the same router and use a Netgear WG511T...works very well. Just install the software that comes with the wireless card and plug it in...that's about it. You can then network the two computers together...if you're running XP on both it's pretty automatic (just run the network wizard on both machines).
You can of course hard wire your Tecra into the router...but as you say a wireless link is far more versatile and after all, that is what the DG834 is designed to do.
Make sure the drivers for the DG834G and the network card are the most up to date ones. You may have to reconfigure the router to allow a new computer to log into it...but that's not too difficult

  • Tecra 8000 not recognising PCMCIA

Ive been using my XP loaded Tecra 8000 and connected to the internet via a wireless system using the USB port. As this keeps losing signal, Ive just bought an Edimax Cardbus Fast Ethernet PC Card. It fits in the PCMCIA slot and gives me an RJ45 connection straight to the router. The problem is that I have fitted the card into the bay but XP has not recognised it. Do I need to alter the bios for the PC to recognise this new hardware?
    Many thanks
    Rob

Thanks but I bought this new with the drivers. I contacted the supplier who now thinks that my Tecra wont recognise the hardware. The hardware was 32 bit and he reckons mine is only going to accept a 16 bit card. I dont know as Im new to all this, so I have returned the card and bought a USB/RJ45 adaptor instead and I now have a constant connection.

  • How to get sound working on W2k on Tecra 8000?

Is there any way to get the sound to work on a Tecra 8000 using windows 2000 pro? I just upgraded from win 98 and the audio driver installs the Yamaha opl3-sax, but there is no sound. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling different drivers, but none seem to work.

    Hi
I would also recommend checking the device manager. If there is no yellow exclamation marks near to the sound card so I would say the sound driver was successful installed and there must be something wrong with the audio settings.
Did you check the sound and audio devices in the control panel? You should check all the sound controller if they are set to the higher level.
Furthermore I would recommend checking the volume controller at the notebook side. Sometimes peoples forget to set it. ;)

  • Tecra 8000 TV out when docked

The docking station for the Tecra8000 doen't replicate the TVout connector, but I have a right-angled cable that fits the normal TV out port when docked and allows the cable to clear the docking unit. Is the TV Out connector normally disabled when docked, and is there a registry setting or something in 98SE to re-enable it?
I connect my Tecra to a TV set to watch DivX movies on the large screen, with the audio out going to my stereo, but I need to use the unit with the replicator because the server containing my video files is on a network, so I need the network capability. I COULD use a PCMCIA network adapter, but then that defeats the object of a docking station with the LAN!!

    Hi Retro
I am a little bit confused. As far as I know some Tecra 8000 have no LAN card. If your unit has LAN card and LAN port why you dont connect the unit directly on TV and LAN without Port Replicator?
I am not 100% sure if the port is disabled but you can test it if you can. If there is no success you must use PCMCIA network adapter.
    Bye

  • Video Out - Tecra 8000

I have a Tecra 8000 with Windows XP Pro installed.
Everything works beautifully I have updated the BIOS to v9.3 - BUT I can't get the video out connections to work.
I have tried the RCA plug on the back, and also connected the SVGA dongle to the side jack and used the composite video out on that, but no signal seems to come out of either of them.
I have tinkered with the various different BIOS settings, used the Fn+F5 key all to no avail.
I have read in the forum here that others have the same problem, so I'm adding a plea for help with this one too. Can I ask, has ANYONE managed to actually get a composite video signal out of their Tecra?

    Hi Peter
If your Tecra is preinstalled with Toshiba Recovery CD all drivers and tools should work properly. In this case there are, in my opinion, two possible reasons why this not works. Either is notebook the cause for this issue or there is some problem with the TV and TV setting.
Using FN+F5 key combination you can switch to external device. It will be interesting to know if this works properly with external monitor. It is not the same port but the tool is the same. You can also try to connect your notebook to another TV. It is sometimes not easy to say what the problem can be. If there is no way to have some success you need some professional help. Maybe the service partner can make a short check of composite video out port.

  • Tecra 8000 composite video out

I am trying to direct video output from my tecra 8000 via the yellow video composite jack at the back of the unit. I thought it was as simple as pluging in both sides of an RCA jack (one end to the video input of a VCR and the other end into the Tecra video jack).
I get NOTHING on the screen. What am I doing wrong?
    Thanks in advance

I had already tried that with no results. There is also a 7 pin canon connector on the side of the laptop. This was provided with units that came with a DVD-ROM. Normally there would be a modem port there. I believe this round connector is for "S-Video" output. I was going to buy a cable for this, but like the composite video output, I'm afraid there is no video signal going to either port. The manual just talks about the port on the back of the unit and it doesn't say anything other than placing an RCA cable between it and a TV or VCR that has the same input port. It's really neither here nor there if I can get this to work, I'm just a little stumped is all.

  • Solaris 7/8 on Toshiba Tecra 8000 Laptop - Possible?

This could be an easy one or one that has to go to Toshiba but I've been trying to get Solaris 7 loaded onto a Toshiba tecra 8000 laptop and can't get a 'fit' for the screen size. I've looked on the tested h/w list and can't see it listed so just wondered if anyone has used this platform for Solaris 7 and what they used? It's a 1024x768 screen. Any help appreciated.

I added Xig's Accelerated X server. With it I use 1024x768 screen and desktop
though I have also played with a larger virtual desktop at same resolution.

  • Screen resolution on my Tecra 8000

    Ok..
I have a toshiba tecra 8000 laptop with windows xp.
The pc started with 800 x 600 the wrong resolution (i had black spaces beside my screen, all sides) so i turned it in windows to 1024 x 768 whitch works perfect. Now the screen is fully filled with urz.. screen :)
    But...
It only seems to be changed in windows. When i start a game or some other program it starts in a small 800 x 600 (?) or some other resolution and leaves black spaces. When i start the laptop the resolution is also wrong (u see the dos (?) tekst starting somewhere close to the middle of the screen) its only changed in windows :(
how can i solve this problem (if it has something to do with the bios or something... hope you can tell me how to solve this problem!
    i would be very happy

    Hi
Please check stretch function in the BIOS and try it again.

  • Tecra 8000 - hard drive connection

    Hi,
My old Tecra 8000 gave up last night after 4 years' faithful service. It's simply refusing to start booting most of the time. I think it's a motherboard problem as it occasionally boots from floppy and remains stable for about 10 minutes. I know that the hard drive is fine as I can copy files to floppy when booting from floppy into DOS mode. Is there any way I can connect the hard drive to a desktop PC so that I can salvage the files that are on there?
    Thanks for your help,
    Tom

    Hi guys,
Thanks for all of your help, I went and got an IDE/USB convertor this afternoon - I didn't realise that you had to take the case off of the hard drive first to reveal the standard connector. Have rescued all of my data so quite relieved about that...
Thanks again for your help. Best,
    Tom

  • Tecra 8000: Question about AC adaptor

    In bad englisch sorry.
The power suply of my tecra 8000 isn't working it's not the wire but the reciever? in the notebook. I have a new notebook but there are some files inside the tecra and because I don't have power I can't reach it. Does anyone nows a solution that doesn't cost me a lot of money?
    greetings H

If a new charger doesn't fix this problem, another solution would be to use a Tecra 520 docking station if you can find one cheaply. This also supports the Tecra 8000 (but not Tecra 8100, 8200). This will power the laptop via connections on the underside of the unit and so avoid the broken DC socket.
Of course you wouldn't be able to use the laptop as a portable, but it would at least provide a solution to enable you to retrieve valuable data.
Another thought: If the data is important to you, you could remove the hard drive and insert it in to the caddy of another (working) Tecra 8000 laptop.

  • Tecra 8000 Laptop

    Hi,
Has anyone had any success or even tried to install on this laptop?
It goes fine until the display settings, I can only choose the default 640 screen, and I don't want that. in the specs sheet from toshiba it states Intel 440BX that is the chipset used, but when you go to the driver on the toshiba site it says it's Neomagic. Should I give up or is there suggestions anyone can give me?????

thanks for the info, I will keep this link bookmarked,

  • Help needed by installing wireless to an Tecra 8000

I have just bought the wife an old tecra 8000 laptop and would like to run wifi on it, I bought a d-link router and a d-link usb adapter but it said I needed a hi-speed usb, and it wouldn,t pick up the router, would a pcmia card work better, also can anybody suggest a modem/router and card that works on it,any help is much appreciated....

    Hi
The Tecra 8000 supports only the USB 1.1 standard.
The high speed USB ports are 2.0
Many USB devices are designed only for the USB 2.0 and I assume your USB WLan adapter supports also only the 2.0 standard.
The PCMCIA should work better. There is no standard limitation like on the USB ports.
