Tecra 8100 , Display dark

Hi Folks,
the Display of my Tecra 8100 goes after 10 Minutes of working, dark. Its not the Screensaver, absolutly ! Cause I hear the sound of my Games continously.
Sometimes, if I reboot the Display comes back,or If I push the FN + F5 Keyboard combination, but not always.
Can somebody tell me what wrong with my machine ?
Is a repair expensive ? Questions,Questions...
bye Francesco

Thanks for the help ! I gave my Tecra already to my local Toshiba dealer for repair.

  • Display Brightness Turns Down at Tecra 8100

    Hi:
I have bought a used Toshiba Tecra 8100 - after two month without problems the monitor suddenly turned down the
brightness - at the beginning the turn-down was only few, now it is quite often.
I tried already several things: first I thought it was because of the old battery ... but after buying a new one the problem was still there. Sometimes after freezing
several times by closing or just by pushing the freezing
button it works fine. Until now I cannot find a source of
the problem (also changed the power settings ... doesnt matter) ... therefore I am quite at the end of my nerves - besides this little, but highly critical problem I am still very satisfied with this fine computer.
Hope to find help in the forum.
    Regards, Bjoern

I too am in the same situation, but I just wanted to clarify the problem. The machine boots up fine, but occasionally the backlight fails completely. This is quite sporadic although rebooting invariably fixes the problem (temporarily). Is this a software or a hardware issue?
    Thanks, David

  • Tecra 8100 only boot up in safe mode

I seem to have lost the display drivers to my Tecra 8100.
Since I attempted to use an extra screen which worked fine until I came to boot up the following day when it would only boot up in Safe Mode.
What have I done wrong and how can I rectify it?
Driver detective doesn't work, just comes up as having performed an illegal action.

    Lars,
I'm afraid that it seems that Toshiba no longer provide the drivers for the Tecra 8100 as it's such an old computer, around 12 years old. I have been on the Toshiba website and tried again on the site you suggested but to no avail. Sorry about that but am still hunting.

  • Tecra 8100: DVD Video-Playback only with jerking/flickering under W2K

I cant play a normal DVD on my Tecra 8100 (P3-600MHz, 256 MB RAM, Windows 2000 with SP4)
without jerkings. Have already try to copy image from DVD to HDD and play directly from
HDD - same result. Therefore it is NOT a problem with the DVD-Drive, possibly a problem
    with the integrated S3 Savage/MX VGA-Card. S3 Display driver V 5.12.1.7002 installed.
Tested with PowerDVD 6 and VLC media player. Any special DVD-Playback software for the
8100 available ??? Please help, trying several hours to solve this problems, already
    talk with toshiba hotline !!!

    Hi
Well, the Tecra 8100 is not a high performance notebook and maybe its generally not possible to watch DVD jerking-free.
But I think you should check several settings before we will give up ;)
So check if the DMA and not the PIO mode is available and set on IDE controllers.
Check if you have installed the latest DirectX.
You said you use the latest graphic driver. Well maybe you will check this site:

Check also if the installation of some codex will help you:

  • Tecra 8100: solid vertical white & screen goes blank

    Hello,
My Tecra 8100 has (or used to have) what seems to be a 'known fault': screen goes blank, can be got back by pressing fn+f5 or the little metal button.
It also acquired a solid vertical white line about 1mm wide and about 30mm from the left hand edge. I managed to stop the blanking (backlight?) problem (thankyou to those who replied to my previous, now locked, question!) by taking the cover off the screen and unplugging and replugging the inverter. So now the screen always stays on. Unfortunately the white line is still there, and whereas previously the screen was normal except for the line, now everything to the right of it (i.e. all but 1" of the screen) is just multicoloured stripes.
What do you think? I've been told that all the inverter does is power the backlight, which suggests the lines problem is something else. But they happened at the same time. Also, as far as I can remember, when I was fiddling about with the inverter connection the lines problem came and went (then came and stayed). Could it still be a bad inverter connection? Or a broken inverter? Or more likely to be something else?
    cheers,
    George

If it indeed is a loose connection its really no more difficult then when you undone the display to reconnect the inverter. A few more screws and you will be able to lift the display off the harness and check the connector in that connects the display to the inverter (not the white and pink wires, thats the inverter backlights, but the wire that plugs in to the left side of the inverter and goes up the back of the display and connects to it. It is a flat cable) When you reattach this cable if you choose not to take it to an ASP, make sure to tape it down good so it does not come loose again. After this if the problem is not resolved, your display is broken and will need to be replaced. It can be costly.

  • Tecra 8100 - no sound output except from mic!

I have a Tecra 8100 running Windows XP.
I can get no sound out of the speakers or headphones outputted from the computer, e.g. beep sounds, CD, etc. But if I un-mute the mic, I can hear through the headphones what the microphone picks up (there's just feedback without microphones, proving the speakers physically work). All the volume controls are on maximum and unmuted. All the devices are enabled and chosen correctly in the sound control panels.
Any help at all would be welcome!! Is it the sound card, or am I missing a driver? can't find anything else on the web with similar symptoms. Thanks in advance.

    Hello
Thats a good questions and I never heard about such an issue...
I think at fist you should start to update the sound driver of your notebook. Therefore you can look on the Toshiba website for an update:
    http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com => Support & Downloads => Download Drivers
Before you install the newest version, you should remove the old version first and restart the notebook.
Maybe a reinstallation of Windows with the Toshiba recovery disk could be also useful and in worst case its a hardware malfunction and you have to exchange the mainboard. :(

  • Tecra 8100 - missing tv-out cable

    Hello.
I have recently bought a Tecra 8100 laptop. Unfortunately there is no tv-out cable included.
According to the manual (ie. here: http://www.microdom.by/olddata/pdfspec/tecra_8100.pdf) the tv-out port provides a s-video (NTSC/PAL) signal via 3,5mm mini jack port.
The missing cable should be a RCA conversion cable.
Can anyone please tell me if there any specific requirements that such cable needs to meet? It's not hard to get an audio mini-jack to 2xRCA conversion cable, but this one obviously does not transmit the video signal.
    Any clues?
I'm working on Win XP SP2, the graphic card installed is S3 Savage/MX.
Thanks in advance for any tips.

    Hi mate,
I know that cable; its a rare accessoire of the Tecra 8100. The problem is, that the 3.5" mini-jack has its own format, so, it will only adapt from 1x 3,5" to 1x RCA.
Such cables can be either found on Ebay, or you contact an ASP (authorized service partner) which could surely send you such cable for some low money...
Heres a link (if you need it) to find the nearest ASP in your country:

  • Question about internal Bluetooth connector on Tecra 8100?

    Hello all.
I have a pt810e-13c52-sp notebook. Upgraded to 512MB by using 2 toshiba 256mb pc100 modules bought in ebay, upgraded to a PIII 850 also got in ebay, and upgraded to a bigger 40GB wdc wd400e hard disk, with much less noise than 12GB original one.
Messing with my computer i have found an internal "bluetooth" connector next to the internal one that belongs to the keyboard.
Why is this?? Is there any unreleased Bluetooth module for Toshiba Tecra 8100??

    Hi Toka
Maybe I am wrong but I have found info that Tecra 8100 has no BT and this model can not be upgraded with BT module. Usually BT will be used just sometimes and if you need BT you can use USB BT stick. It is pretty easy to configure it and this small part can be used whenever you need it.

  • Replace power adapter for Tecra 8100

    Hi support,
I have Tecra 8100 where its original power adapter has died. I need to buy a new one, but I found that Toshiba has replaced the PA2444U adapter model with a new model. Which power adapter model that is now compatible with Tecra 8100?
Thanks. I really need an answer because I need to work with the laptop.

The Tecra 8100 will function with many adapters from Tecra 8000, 8200, 9000, 9100 and the M1, M2 range etc.
There are of course differences in the output current rating, but in practice it is still possible to use a higher output adapter without issue, provided the voltage is 15V DC.
For example, I am currently using a model PA2450U (15V, 3A) plugged into my Tecra 9100 port replicator and this works fine. The only potential down side is that it might take longer to charge the battery than it would with the correct model (which would be rated 4A).
This means you shouldn't have too much trouble finding a suitable substitute.

  • Tecra 8100: updating bios from cd. exe won't run from command line

I want to update the bios of my Tecra 8100.
I downloaded the bios, but as the pc has no floppy, I cretaed a bootable cd like this
When I boot the pc, do F2, press c to boot from cd, I get into a dos-like environment. I went to drive Z, did 'dir', and see the bios.exe I burned on cd. To run it I type bios.exe and keep getting "command of filename not recognized" when i type dir *.exe, it does not see the file either.
Maybe I am overlooking something here?

    Thank you.
It was a different bios then on this page:
    I got there from [this|http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/innovation/download_driver_details.jsp?service=EU&selCategory =8&selFamily=195&selSeries=24&selProduct=103&selSh ortMod=null&language=13&selOS=all&selType=4&yearup load=&monthupload=&dayupload=&useDate=null&mode=al lMachines&search=&action=search&macId=&country=all &selectedLanguage=13&type=4&page=1&ID=20831&OSI D=-1&driverLanguage=42 ] page
The download contained a iso, so that was easy enough to do the update.<br /><br />
    Thank you very much.
Laptop is fully functional again, better then it ever did on win98se.

  • Tecra 8100 Drivers for Windows XP

I recently installed the XP on a separate partition. My Tecra 8100 originally has 98SE. Now I find that some drivers are not loading in XP....like for PCMCIA card ect. Can some one tell me where to get the same. In driver download list from Toshiba, I do not see the PCMCIA Card driver.
Also some thing very funny...My DVD ROM can not read the "coloured" DVDs/CDs. I mean the new blank discs are bright colourful like red/blue/black etc on the data side. My DVD ROM reads the white discs but not these coloured ones. Any one heard of this before ???

    Please, take a look at
    http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/su/su_sc_home.jsp
Clicking on "Downloads" will take you to a screen where you can choose the Tecra 8100 and find OFFICIAL downloads for this model and Windows XP!!!

  • Tecra 8100 not seeing all installed memory

I'm working on a Tecra 8100 laptop for a friend. Machine doesn't seem to recognize memory installed in Slot B at all. Is there a trick in the BIOS to force it to rescan or am I simply looking at a broken slot? It looks ok visually and the clips seem sound .....

    I agree with Feliks;
Either RAM module or the slot could be faulty.
You should try the RAM module in slot A in order to check the functionality.
If the same RAM would function in slot A but not in slot B then I would assume that the slot B is damage.

  • Will a WD1200BEVE fit in a Tecra 8100?

Hi there, I was wondering if a Western Digital WD1200BEVE would fit in a Tecra 8100. It's an ATA-100 HDD, so it would be no problem, right? Just asking to be sure.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Tecra 8100
It's EIDE and less than 137 GB. Windows NT or later shouldn't be a problem. So it should work.
That laptop came with up to 20 GB drives. So it's conceivable the BIOS won't accept or see all of 120 GB.

  • Tecra 8100 does not power up let alone boot

    Any help appreciated.
I have a Tecra 8100 laptop which has recently refused to power-up or boot. If I connect AC power the DC IN indicator shows steady green. I then press the power-on button and the laptop momentarily attempts to start and sometimes you briefly hear the CD drive whirl into life. But then the laptop shuts down (normally after less than 1 second from the power up) and the DC IN indicator flashes orange. If I disconnect and reconnect AC power the DC IN indicator resets to steady green.
I have tried changing the battery power pack and both memory SIMMS with known working replacements. I've also left the battery power back on charge for quite a while - all to no avail.
Appreciate any ideas you may have. I suspect it won't be worth sending back to the manufacturer for repair as the warranty has expired.
    Many Thanks,
    Liam.
