Tecra 8100: solid vertical white & screen goes blank

Hello,
My Tecra 8100 has (or used to have) what seems to be a 'known fault': screen goes blank, can be got back by pressing fn+f5 or the little metal button.
It also acquired a solid vertical white line about 1mm wide and about 30mm from the left hand edge. I managed to stop the blanking (backlight?) problem (thankyou to those who replied to my previous, now locked, question!) by taking the cover off the screen and unplugging and replugging the inverter. So now the screen always stays on. Unfortunately the white line is still there, and whereas previously the screen was normal except for the line, now everything to the right of it (i.e. all but 1" of the screen) is just multicoloured stripes.
What do you think? I've been told that all the inverter does is power the backlight, which suggests the lines problem is something else. But they happened at the same time. Also, as far as I can remember, when I was fiddling about with the inverter connection the lines problem came and went (then came and stayed). Could it still be a bad inverter connection? Or a broken inverter? Or more likely to be something else?
cheers,
George

If it indeed is a loose connection its really no more difficult then when you undone the display to reconnect the inverter. A few more screws and you will be able to lift the display off the harness and check the connector in that connects the display to the inverter (not the white and pink wires, thats the inverter backlights, but the wire that plugs in to the left side of the inverter and goes up the back of the display and connects to it. It is a flat cable) When you reattach this cable if you choose not to take it to an ASP, make sure to tape it down good so it does not come loose again. After this if the problem is not resolved, your display is broken and will need to be replaced. It can be costly.

  • Tecra 8100: screen goes blank

Several of my Tecra 8100s have a problem with the screen going blank. They can be fine for ages or it can happen 3/4 times in a minute. Anyone know what the problem is and/or know how to fix it? Doesn't seem to matter how much ram there is or how big the hard drive is it still happens. At the moment all I can do is press the screen button or close/open the LCD lid.

    Hi,
I can not be sure if this is correct answer or not. But my Tecra 8100 was giving the same problem. Screen used to become so dim as if it had gone blank. And this would happen just about any time(many times in a day or not for weeks). Then all I could do was - hit the power button. Then one day it went blank and did not come ON only for 1 month. I showed it to a service guy and he said it was BIOS problem. He installed the updated BIOS and I did not have that problem for over a year now.
But again, I am no expert so sombody pls reconsider my suggestion.

My screen goes blank after I see the white start up screen

What kind of iMac do you have?  A PowerPC G3, G4, G5, or an Intel-based iMac?  What OS are you using?  OS 9, OS 10.2.x Jaguar, 10.3.x Panther, 10.4.x Tiger, 10.5.x Leopard, 10.6.x Snow Leopard, 10.7.x Lion, 10.8.x Mountain?
This particular forum is for older PowerPC G3, G4, G5 iMacs running OS 10.5.8 or older.  If your iMac was made after 2006, then you have an Intel-based iMac.
That being said, here are a few tips to try:
    Option 1
Restart the computer while holding down the Option key.  This will tell the computer to look for bootable drives.  If it finds your normal startup disk, select let, then click the right pointing arrow to boot up the computer.  Now open up System Preferences> System> and select your normal Startup OS as the default startup disk.
    Option 2
Reset your PRAM.  Press and hold down the Command Option P R keys while starting your computer.  You will hear the startup chime.  continue holding down those keys until you hear the startup chime a second time.  Release the keys.  If the computer restarts, you will need to reset your Date and Time.  It might be time to replace your PRAM battery.
    Option 3
Reset the SMC by removing all cables (USB, Firewire, Ethernet, Modem, Power cord) from the back of your computer.  Let it sit for one minute.  Press and hold the power on button on the back of the iMac while plugging in the power cord.  Release the power on button.  Count to five, the press the power on button again.
    Option 4
Place your original, came with the iMac when purchased install disk, into the slot on the iMac, press and hold the C key while pressing the power on button on the back of the computer.  (If you have upgraded your OS from when you purchased your iMac, example your iMac came with OS 10.3 installed, and you're now using OS 10.5, then use the OS 10.5 Retail Install disk that you had used to upgrade your OS instead of the original, came with the iMac disk.)
Continue holding the C key until you see the OS starting to load.  DO NOT do an OS installation.  At the top Menu bar, select Utilities or Utility, and pull down to Disk Utility.  On the left side of the window that opens, select your normal OS drive.  Click First Aid at the top middle of the window if it isn't already selected.  Click Repair Disk from the lower right area of the window.  When that is done, click Repair Permissions to the left of the Repair Disk button you clicked earlier.
When that is done, quit Disk Utility.  From the top Menu bar (I think its under Utilities) select the Start Up Manager, and choose your normal boot volume as the startup disk.  Restart the computer.  If successful, and you've rebooted from your normal startup disk, eject the install DVD/CD, and you're good to go.
    Good luck.

  • [Solved] GS60 - Windows 8 - Screen Goes Blank But Sound Continues

Typically about 1-2 seconds after the windows signup screen, the screen goes blank but you can still hear beeps of the pc loading. Then, only sometimes, white lines flash horizontally across the screen.  My only choice at this point is to do a hard shutdown. The "MSI" logo pops up on reboot and process continues. Eventually (like after 5-10 mins. and several restarts/shutdowns from the windows login screen), the screen will work again. The screen will continue working for hours uninterrupted but may encounter the same issue. Then, it takes 5-10 mins to get the screen operational again!

    Hey lbman14,
Try updating your VBIOS if yours are not 80.04.EF.00.21, and use the latest graphics driver from MSI website first.

    Hello nosaint1961,
It sounds like you are unable to successfully boot your computer to your desktop. I would use the troubleshooting from the following article to help troubleshoot what is happening named:
Troubleshooting: My computer won't turn on
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1367
If your computer won't turn on, try each of these steps:
Verify you have a good connection from your Mac to the wall outlet by confirming the power cord and adapter if present are securely connected and plugged in. To check if the wall outlet is working, plug in a lamp or other electrical device.
If the wall outlet is working and you continue to have no power try another power cord or adapter if available. If it works you may need a replacement cord or adapter.
Note: See Apple Portables: Troubleshooting MagSafe adapters for further troubleshooting with MagSafe adapters.
Disconnect all accessories that are plugged in to the computer, such as a printer, hub, or other mobile device.
If your Mac supports user-installable memory, solid state drive, or hard drive, and you recently installed any of these, make sure they are installed correctly and are compatible with your computer. If possible, reinstall the original memory or drive into the computer to find out if the behavior persists afterwards.

  • Why does my iPad screen goes blank

Just bought my iPad 3, screen goes blank frequently, even after rebooting and /or closing and opening app? Any ideas?

It goes without saying that it should not do that. What exactly though does "it goes blank" mean? Do you get a white screen, a black screen? What is a blank screen?
If you just bought it, contact the store where you bought it and explain the situation ... return it. Or contact Apple phone support. It's free for the first 90 days.

  • N93 Screen Goes Blank & Comes Back On (Auto-restar...

Hi, I have the Nokia N93 black. It says it is made in Finland.
I have been using it for aboout a year and I got this phone by trading it with my earlier phone. I didn't get the phone as a new item but rather a 2nd-hand trade.
I have this problem of the screen going blank and comes back (auto-restart) sometimes. It is not very often but from what I observed, it happens usually during a long phone call, not every time, but sometimes.
I've looked around the in user reviews and forums and it seems that there is quite a lot of problems with the phone. Examples of these problems include auto-restart, auto shut-off, hangs and such. The fortunate part is that my phone doesn't hang.
I'm using the latest firmware, v20.0.058 and there isn't any updates ever since.
What do you think? Do you think this is a hardware problem? Do you think I should even be bothered about it? I'm worried because I didn't get it as a new item. Could the earlier user traded because he damaged it?

It can be either a hardware fault or a software fault.
To rule out a software fault you'll want to re-install the current firmware with Nokia Software Updater. If that solves the problem then it was a software fault. If not, then it's a hardware fault and you'll need to take the phone in to your nearest Nokia Care Point.

  • My iPod nano will go into the sleep mode while a song is playing a second after the screen goes blank; the song will stop and I will then have to press the sleep/awake button to pick up where the song left off.  How do I fix this?

My iPod nano will go into the sleep mode while a song is playing a second after the screen goes blank; the song will stop and I will then have to press the sleep/awake button to pick up where the song left off.  How do I fix this?

Your problem is that your iPod is not sensing that your headset is inserted. There is a pin inside the headphone port on the Nano that senses if it is inserted fully. If it does not sense anything, it will pause playback to save battery power when the screen dims. Here are the solutions:
Insert it fully. This will fix it for most of you. Press that thing in there all the way. You should feel and hear a full click when it is fully seated. If you can see ANY silver of the headset jack, it is not fully inserted.
Debris inside the headset port. If you are totally unable to push the headset jack all the way, the most likely problem is that you have crud inside your headphone jack. Try blowing it out or slapping it against your palm with the headset port facing your palm to try and get the stuff out. If you look into he jack with a light, you should be able to see to the bottom. The entire inside of the headset port is white, so if it looks dark at the bottom, that is the crud that is keeping your nano from working.
Headset jack or plug issue. If you cannot solve the problem with 1 or 2, then there is likely something physically wrong with either the headset jack on your headphones or the headset port on the nano.
If none of the above works, you need to take it to the Apple store or wherever you purchased it. I think they are still under warranty.

  • Hp touchsmart screen goes blank and never shows up

I bought an Hp touchsmart 610-1130f refurbished from Hp ebay around Febuary and sent it to my son but the computer had a problem which was very hard to figure out so I reformatted it and installted Windows 7 ultimate. The computer was working alright but the problem it had was that the screen goes blank with the power light on when using for sometime, takes 30 minitues to go off, sometimes more and less at times. So after got it formatted and reinstalled the new windows 7 ultimate was not giving me that problems so decided to install its drivers and it started going off again.I sent it out to a technician and he formatted and was not going off so I decided to use it for sometime but the installation he used was not an original windows software so bought a new windows 7 Home premium and installed.I then figured out what was really causing the computer to go off.If I do install the new windows the sleep mode is not available but when I do install the Intel Graphic driver then it activated the sleep mode and that is what seems to be causing my computer to go off.I check the warranty and it showed that the computer was purchase on 10-10-11 so that implies that it warranty period is over eventhough I bought it from hp ebay within Febuary. Now I want to install the intel Graphics but want to know if its possible to deactivate the sleep period permanently after I have installed the Intel Graphic.

Have you tried to restore to factory settings to rule out any software issues.

I just recently bought IPAD2....Whenever i inserted my microsim into sim tray, the screen goes blank with only apple logo to show...It does not start till i remove the sim and press both Home and Power buttons simulataneously...Can somebody help what shall i do????

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iPod fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

When I am on a phone call and I double click the button to go to my home screen, then open another application (usually my calendar program, Calengoo), my screen goes blank and I am not able to return to either the app, the phone, or the home screen. If I am speaking to a person, if they hang up then I am back to the phone application. If I'm leaving a message, I am unable to return to the phone screen to end the call, and have to wait until the other phone hangs up. I'm also unable to switch back and forth to look at my calendar if I'm calling someone about scheduling. This has only started happening since the most recent iOs update. I run into situations similar to this about once per day during the work week, as I use my phone is this manner quite often. While not life altering it is quite frustrating. Can anyone here help me figure out a way to avoid this? If it helps, I have noticed a general downgrade in overall performance starting two system updates ago (apps opening more slowly, closing unexpectedly more often, etc.). I have an iPhone 3GS with the latest OS update.
Thank you for any help or suggestions,

  • Screen Goes Blank, Hard Drive Stuck, Cannot Re-Install, or recover

I have somewhat a bizzar problem that even with several years of IT experience I seam not to be able to figure it out. I thought I toss it our here at Toshiba community in hopes of people's collective experience shedding some lights on my problem.
I hava a 3 year old Toshiba Sattellite A305D with updated BIOS to version 2.10. It came with Windows Vista Home 32bit and I had upgraded it to Windows 7 64-bit last Christmas. It was working fine till last month that I started getting sporadic blank screens. Here is the symptome with details: screen goes blank, backlight it on, but there is no content on screen. At this time the Hard Disk Drive activity light is steady lit. Initially the problem happened intermitently and sometimes it fixed itself after few minutes and screen would come back on, but when it started to happen more often, I started to look for some troubleshooting. Some people suggested that blank screen could be due to bad lid close button being stuck or Windows power management's CPU power being set to 5%. I have tried cleaning the lid button and fixing power management but no luck. Then, I tried re-installing Windows from DVD, screen never went blank till after the first few steps of setup to the point that it says "Extracting Windows Files". At this time I started to think this is a hardware issue. I took out the RAM, I installed it on my MacBook Pro and used it for few days, and I had no problem. I even diagnosed them with Windows Memory Checker in the list of Recovery Options and no problem was detected. So, the next suspecious thing was the video card or display inverter. I tried connecting the laptop to an external monitor to test the screen's inverter, and same thing happened and external monitor went blank. I used Windows Recovery options and left it on that screen over night and nothing happened so I concluded the video card is fine. Next, I had turned off the Wifi and Lan, but nothing seamed to change, so I concluded those are OK as well. My last coclusion was that the hard drive is bad. I took the drive out and coonected it to my Desktop PC and ran disk utiility scan to check for bad sectors and none was detected. So, I thought the drive might be totally broken. I went to local electronics store and bought a brand new HITACHI SATA II drive and installed it. At first same thing happened so I gave up. Since I didn't have the recovery disks, I ordered recovery disks from Toshiba and tried that. Save thing happend and as soon as it started copying files, it blanked out. OK. So this time I ran a different recovery option and formatted the entire hard disk and zeroed out all sectors. That took approximately 3 days to finish for a 500GB brand new hard drive. Seams a long time. After that I could install Windows 7 64-bit from scratch up to the end. However, things got gorry again when I started installing Updates and driver packages. I had read about some problems with ATI drivers and Catalyst software with .NET updates, so I did not install any driver from update site and made sure all .NET updates are installed. I had to install the updates slowly chosing a few at a time. Otherwise same thing would happen. I got stuck to the point that I could not update anything. Windows files seamed to be corrupt and turning on/off Windows Features in controll panel was blank, so I had to re-install again. I did Re-install successfully using the upgrade option. This time I installed .NET updates first before any other updates. Then I started downloading all Toshiba drivers. Aazingly, the laptop worked for few ours without the symptom. I managed to install most of the drivers and updates including Value Added Package, HDD/DVD Rom Patch, Registry Patch, Sound, Modem, Atheros Wireless, and Catalyst. Up till now things were ok. Then I ran Toshiba Hardware update patch, and things got really messed up. Windows never booted again and symptoms showed right after boot tried to load WIndows. I tried recovery options but System restore kept getting errors too and I could not restore any more. Since Windows 7 Install and Windows Vistal recovery to Factory Default from recovery disk did not work, I thought maybe I should try Windows XP. So, I got a hold of my old Windows XP CD-ROM and I took a stab at it. Everything went fine till it started to copy windows files. This time symptom was different. I got one of those XP Blue Screen of deaths saying Hard Drive is bad and I must run chdsk /F. So, I concluded HDD is the problem. Ran CHDSK and no problem. I formated the drive again using DISKPART and the problem still exists. This is a brand new hard drive. What is the problem?

Please include your full model number when posting problems on the forums. It can be found on the bottom of your laptop. "A305D" is only partial.
That's quite the problem. How often was it doing this? At some steps in your diagnosing, it seemed to get better, but I wonder if it was actually (temporarily) fixed, or if it didn't occur by chance.
Unfortunately I don't have an answer for you. Normally I'd suggest you get it serviced, but then you'd also be throwing more money at a three year old notebook when clearly you're knowledgeable yourself.
Hopefully someone in the community will have some suggestions. I have noticed that some people shy away from posts with large paragraphs of text. (I'm not saying that's correct, but it happens.) I'd suggest putting some bullet points at the top summarizing. If you feel like doing that, you can edit your message.
    Good luck!

  • Unmountable Boot Volume on XP and screen goes blank before repair begins

The XP Windows partition was seemingly working fine until I turned on the laptop this afternoon. Took a minute or so longer to boot than usual and I was prompted when it did load to update Acrobat, which I did and it rebooted. Took longer to boot, perhaps two or three minutes and I received an Unmountable Boot Volume error. I rebooted a few more times, same result. I tried system restore to three previous dates over past ten days and was told after attempted reloading that it had failed and I should try another day. Worried about my data, I went to safe mode to back up C: drive.
The general advice from MS is to use the Windows installation CD to repair the boot sector. With the CD in, Windows will boot and show my normal desktop and files, though will on perhaps the third item to load to memory, the screen goes blank and the loading seems to continue, as I hear sounds though not sure if it is the programs or the repair.
There does seem to be an ability for it to boot, just not maintain it through full load. Any suggestions short of reinstalling windows would be welcomed. Thank you.

I was unistalling some usless programs when my laptop died & when I turned it on I had unmountable boot volume 0x000000ED (the blue screen)
If I hit repair windows it goes to a black screen with the mouse (nothing else)
Now I tried f8 & then did command prompt but after it had gone to the loading files screen it had gone back to the blue screens with unmountable boot volume 0x000000E
I DL windows 7 repair but how do I get it to install when I cant get past the blue screen?
so i decide to repair it my self and then i found this great solution what helps me
