Tecra A4 won't boot - switches off after 3 seconds

Hey all,
I really hope you can help me on this. Recently I bought a cheap Laptop Toshiba Tecra A4 at Ebay. It was said there is a hard drive defect only...it's not.
When I try to switch the laptop on the lamps go on and the DVD drive starts to spin..everything normal. But then after about 3 seconds it switches off before it can reach the bootscreen - like I would remove the power cable.
The very weird thing is that sometimes, let's say every 1 of 15 tries the laptop starts like it should and boots up from my linux live-CD. Then I can work for hours and nothing bad happens ... until I want to switch it on again. Then the game starts from the very beginning.
I already tried to:
- remove the defect hard disk
- remove the power cable only
- remove only the battery
- replace the RAM or use only one of the two
- to remove both RAM
- remove the power cable and the battery overnight to reset the CMOS
...nothing changed.
I would be very pleased if anyone could help me. So far I found only unanswered forum entries with that problem in the WWW - so at least, I am not the only one going mad :-)
Thanks a lot
Hans

I can't promise that this advice will be of any use to you but your symptoms seem similar to a problem that I had with my Tecra S3 when I tried to run it on battery only after an extended period (months) running only on its docking bay. I found that the battery was not charging properly and ceased to charge after it got to approximately 23% and would fail suddenly under use without giving any warning of battery depletion. When trying to restart the laptop, (before I had determined that the battery was faulty), I had symptoms similar to those you describe relating to shutting off before reaching the boot screen.
I would recommend you try running without the old battery present in the chassis, if the A4 will allow that. If that works for any duration exceeding the short limits you have been experiencing, I would try and temporarily source another battery (preferably with a provable 100% charge) from any source that you can manage. If this proves to be beneficial, you may need to invest in your own new battery. But if not you may have another issue with the physical connection between the power cable jack point and the battery (maybe a dry solder joint that is temperature sensitive). To determine that would probably require Toshiba hardware technical support, or at least knowledge of the motherboard circuits and some circuit testing tools. It could be costly as well.
The very least you need to be able to do if you can restart the laptop for any length of time is to determine the state of the battery using any tools you may have on your Linux live-CD. You might investigate the BIOS version of the A4 and see if that helps by upgrading the ACPI interfaces, but a BIOS upgrade could be risky if you can not get reliable power.
Hope that helps.

    1. The iPod Nano (4th Generation - 8GB) switches on, only when connected to USB power by showing apple logo and displays Menu options thereafter..
    2. However, I can not access Menu as it is unresponsive to click wheel. As a result it is inaccessible to any further use,
    3. NOTE: it displays "Battery Fully charged" icon on the screen without any "Lock" icon.
    4. After  5-sec to 10-secs the screen deems off.. i.e. goes to sleep mode.. And thereafter would probably remain like that (sleeeping) for eternity!!!!
    5. It Switches off after WITHOUT DISPLAYING any Apple Logo immediately after disconnecting from USB Power.
    6. In other words, it can be switched on only through USB power in spite of battery being fully charged.
    7. Interestingly, it syncs with iTunes. It is recognised in iTunes (Latest version 11+).. Displays on screen all commands Like.. syncronising, connecting, connected,
    8. Allows to add Music, videos like a normal ipod & displays all status information in iTunes.
    9. Read Trobleshooting & Tried all 5R's. Registered, Resetted, updated & Restored to iOS 1.0.2
    10. It is now displaying to select Language in place of Menu options, with no access through click wheel, centre button whatsoever... Problem still persists

  • Optical audio in Lion switches off after 30 seconds

I have a new iMac 27" Computer purchased November 2010 with Snow Leopard on. I have upgraded to Lion OS the day it came out.
When I started using it, I noticed that the Optical steam (red beam) would switch off after roughly 30 seconds. I researched this issue and found that OS X powers down the Sound Hardware after 30 seconds if not used, as it is fine under Bootcamp with Windows 7.
So I used a program called Sound 1.0,1 to stop the Optical connection switching off, by playing a silent sound every 20 seconds. But now Lion does not support PowerPC programs by Rosetta, so am back to the original problem, that if the hardware has switched off, I miss the first 2 or 3 seconds of the start of the audio, like Skype announcing that some has signed in / out or on MSN as a message notification.
Any ideas to sort this annoying problem be most grateful.

    Thanks for your help Andrew.
Have tried that and seems to be working at the mo (touch wood). See how it goes.
Can't tell you what a difference it is compared to the monitors speakers.
    Thanks Again

  • Macbook won't boot up anymore after trying to reformat

So my White Macbook won't boot up anymore after trying to reformat. While trying to install a fresh copy of Snow Leopard, the Macbook just froze and I had to reset. Now, while trying to boot it up, it hangs at a white screen with a folder with a question mark.
My install disk is still in there, so when I try to boot up while holding C, nothing happens. It either goes to the folder with a question mark or the screen stays white. So after that I tried holding option to go to the drives nothing happens. I just see a white screen and a cursor.
I tried resetting PRAM and tried booting in safe mode and everything but to no avail. Everything results in just a white screen or just a folder with a question mark.
Can I do anything before I have to bring it to the Apple Store? The optical drive should work because before I reformatted it, I could see that the disk was in the drive because the icon was in the upper right.

it hangs at a white screen with a folder with a question mark
Startup your Mac while holding down the Option key. That should prompt the Startup Manager window where you can select the startup disk.
A flashing question mark appears when you start your Mac

Just for interest sake i watched this video on youtube where this guy had the same problem  but the difference is that he had it on an iPad. he opened the ipad up and did something on the ipad, it took less than a minute then his ipad worked.

  • Muvo N200 Switches off after 1 tr

I'm experiencing a very very irritating problem with my player. It just switches off after playing single track. This problem only surfaced after using for approximately for 2 - 3 months. The other irritating part is that I couldn't access Recovery Mode and thus could not do any firmware upgrade, etc. Anyone can help me on this issue or must I return to Creative to have it RMA ? Thnx

Not if you don't have any problems with .2.0.
Some people will like .5.0 because it gives support for 3 levels of sub-folders which then allows sync with WMP0. But it also changes the volume scale which others don't like!

  • Switch off after 20%

    Hi ,
For the last two days, i m facing this issue,  my iphone4S switch off after battery level goes just below 20%. I need to charge it again to switch ON the mobile.
I have upgraded to iOS 6.1.2 two weeks back. Can anyone please help me, your help will be highly appreciated.

Try fully discharging (until it shuts off) and then fully recharging (don't unplug until 100%) to recalibrate the battery meter.  You may need to do this a few times.

  • My ipad atomatically gets switched off after every 5 mins

From first day only my ipad atomatically gets switched off after every 5 mins and then atomatically gets on after 2-3 mins. is it a hardware problem or some problem in settings? if anybody knows the solution then please let me know....

Is this a brand new iPad2. Did you notice this occurring before you started adding apps? Is this is occurring if you do not have any apps you have started running either active or in the background?
If you have already tried powering off the device, you can try to do a hard reset (Hold down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10 seconds until the Apple logo appears, ignore the red slider, let go of the buttons.) and see how it runs without starting any apps.
I do not have instructions for doing a restore but that is the only other step that I think of that you can take to resolve a software based problem.
If you are still seeing the behavior after trying most or all of the above, I  would suggest taking it in or returning it for service.

  • Using the Cyclops speed camera app, the sound on my iPhone 4s switches off after a few minutes. Any ideas?

when using the Cyclops speed camera app the sound on my iPhone 4s switches off after a short while. If I close the app and reopen it, there's still no sound. If I restar the phone and open Cyclops I get sound "welcome to Cyclops" or whatever the greeting is. Has anyone got any ideas?

I've taken several Express devices apart in the past to experiment with them. The internal components warm up quite a bit in the first 10-15 seconds. They continue to heat up after this.  It takes 3-4 minutes or so before the heat transfers to the outer case for dissipation.
Nothing is certain, but I'm 95% sure that this is your issue.  But, trying to find a microscopic break in a circuit board trace is, as I mentioned, a real longshot. If you have the time and have done things like this before, it might be worth a shot.
I guess the bottom line is that even if this is not the issue, the device will still need to be replaced since Apple does not offer repairs. There are no software or firmware fixes for somthing like this.

  • 27" iMac Mountain Lion won't boot (Black screen) after switching to bootcamp

    Hi,
I've been running Windows 7 in Boot Camp on Mountain Lion on my 1 month old 27" iMac without any problems. Tonight after I switched the startup partition to be boot camp the machine won't boot. I get the startup sound and the disks spin up, but the system just sits there with a Black Screen. There is no disk activity other than them spinning up.
I've tried starting the machine while holding the option key and also command-r, but nothing is happening. I have the feeling that the bluetooth keyboard has not had the chance to connect to the system before it is hanging.
I tried inserting a Lion OS DVD, thinking that it would at least complain and give me an option to boot back in to Mountain Lion. You can hear the DVD spin up and then go idle.
Any suggestions on how I can recover the situation?
    Thanks in advance
    Mick

The RAM mismatch might be the problem fix that.
Also backup/data recover naturally, assume TimeMacine or bootable clone is corrupted and backup only files to a storage drive
    Most commonly used backup methods
Install OS X on a external drive and boot from it.
Create a data recovery/undelete external boot drive
Use Disk Utility on the booted clone to Erase with middle selection (Zero) the ENTIRE internal hard drive
Use Carbon Copy Cloner to reverse clone the clone onto the internal, copies the Recovery HD too.
That should fix it, or else the drive or another hardware issue

  • Nokia CK-7W Car Kit won't switch off after switch...

    Hi,
I have a CK-7W car kit (connected via bluetooth).
Recently, the car kit has been reconnecting 2 to 3 seconds after switching the engine of the car off. I cannot seem to stop this from happening, even when clearing memory or even disconnecting the car battery for 20 mins.
Any advice on how to reset the car kit would be helpful.
    Thanks,
    Chris

    Thanks for the response.
The car kit was installed by a Car Phone Warehouse Nokia approved fitter about 4 years ago The kit has worked really well until recently!
The contol button doesn't seem to be stuck in and responds as it should to button presses. In terms of the cable being squashed or damaged. Obviously there is a chance, but in actual fact, only an inch is on show before it is hidden behind the dashboard. In this instance I'm not sure what damage might occur since I don't know how to remove the dash!
Apologies, I'm not certain I understand your comment re:
      -  "You can rule out the button by disconnecting it then starting the car and connecting, before switching off the car to see if the kit shuts down."
How do I disconnect the button? Does it pull away from the lead / cable?
Many, many thanks for your help,
    Chris

  • Won't switch off after upgrade

  • I've added to ios6 to my new ipod touch with no problems. I'm trying to now restore the factory settings but the screen is frozen with an itunes sign and lead pointing towards it. The ipod won't even switch off. Can anyone help as it's driving me crazy

I've added ios6 to my new ipod but tried then to restore the factory settings. It won't extract any settings and the itunes then tells me that the server cannot be reached or is unavailable. I've been trying all day. Now the ipod has a itunes sign and a computer lead pointing towards it on the screen and this is frozen. It won't switch off or do anything else. Any ideas as this is now driving me crazy.

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • Portege R30 won't boot from SSD after upgrade to SSD and HDD

    Hi
I upgraded my Portege R30-A to add a second SSD (Crucial M550) replacing the optical drive with the new SSD with caddy.
But now the system won't boot automatically from the original SSD.
I could press F12 while turning on my laptop, and bring up the boot manual. Here I can see my original SSD and I can boot from it correctly.
In the boot order in the BIOS, I only see HDD/SSD, USB Memory, ODD .... It doesn't give me the option to choose between SSDs.
Anyway when I boot in this way I get blue screens after a while in win7.
I have tried to instal a HDD as the second disc instead os SSD and the resut is the same.
Is there anything I can do to solve this, now I have to use the second disc as an external USB disc.
    Thanks,

I have experienced the same problem. (I don't know why my previous reply got deleted.)
The problem all relates to the CSM mode of Toshiba BIOS.
The solution is adding a boot partition (FAT32) on the drive that is in the original ODD spot.
Use a Windows 8 Installer (on a USB drive) to build a boot sector on that partition and direct it to the SSD where Windows 7 is installed. Then after you have done all of this, switch back to UEFI mode.
The system should be able to boot Windows 7 properly from the SSD in UEFI mode.

  • Tecra R950-15E - Need WiFi switched off by deafult

    Hi all,
I am new to the forum and would like to ask a question whose answer
I was unable to find both on the web and here in the forum (at least with my keywords; please direct me if missed it).
For some time I own a Tecra R950-15E running Win7 Pro 64bit and am quite satisfied with it.
The only thing that bothers me a bit is the WiFi mode.
I know that by pressing "FN+F8" I can switch the wireless modes (WiFi and 3G) on and off.
It seems that by default the wireless modes are switched on after starting the system.
I'd like to have it all switched off by deafult (mainly for saving battery) and only switching it on manually when I really need it.
By now I have to do it the other way round by switching it off manually after starting the system and I haven't found a setting to change it to my preference.
Does anyone have an idea to fix that?
    Thanks
    tecra14

Unfortunately that did not help. I de-installed all wireless software and drivers and then rebooted. First the system installed drivers automatically from the net, then I installed/updated with the latest drivers and software from the Toshiba site. It is to no avail.
Interestingly, after "only" rebooting (immediate re-start) it memorizes the setting, but after switching it off for the night, the next morning the memory is gone and the WiFi is again switched on by default regardless of former settings. I also tried the administrative tool with WiFi switched off by default there, but that doesn't help either.
    Thanks
    tecra14
