Tecra laptop w/ external harddrive .. freezing on start up.. help

I have a Toshiba Tecra laptop, I am using it with a Western Digital 500 gig external harddrive connected thru USB 2 connection.
The laptop freezes when I turn it on If I leave the external harddrive pluged to the USB port.  Can anyone help me in fixing this.

Since updating my Iphone 5 with IOS7, i cannot even start up the phone, the start up loading bar goes up around a millimeter and then freezes, any help please

    Hello Mark:
Since your iMac is new (and still under warranty), I suggest you tke it to an Apple store (or call Applecare) for problem resolution. There si no sense in wasting your time on what appears to be a hardware problem.

  • Mac Pro freezing at start up, help!

Hi, so here is my issue. I have two HDs in my Mac Pro, one with Windows and one with Mac OS X. I was gaming on the Windows side, and the game crashed. The computer automatically restarted, booting in Mac OS X. At the time, I was running 10.6.2, and hadn't done the most recent update.
The restart tone goes off, and the grey screen with the Apple logo and spinning gear appear, but after about 5-7 seconds, the spinning freezes and there is a very quick 'orange' flash on the screen.
After booting in target disk mode, and recovering necessary files, I completely erased both HDs, and re-installed 10.6. It still mounts in target disk mode on my MacBook Pro, but also still freezes at the grey screen.
If anyone could offer some help I would be forever grateful, although I've got a bad feeling that my Mac Pro will be making a trip to the store.
    Thanks again,

  • Restoring files on external harddrive to my laptop

Hi , I'm trying to restore my files on my external harddrive back to my laptop. I backed up the files using the recovery manager as I needed to put my laptop back to factory settings. The problem I'm now having is that I can't restore the files back to my laptop. When I first tried, (after taking the laptop back to factory settings,),I clicked on the BACKUP.01.exe file, I was first asked to allow permission and then the recovery manager started. I was told what files would be moved over and then a percentage bar came up and it started running. After a few minutes my laptop shut down. When I got my laptop back up running, I tried it again, I clicked on the BACKUP.01.exe, I was asked permission again but this time when clicked allow, nothing happened. I've recovered my laptop back to factory settings again, I then went through the same procedure as before, I clicked on the BACKUP.01.exe file, I was asked to allow permission, when I clicked allow the recovery manager started. The percentage bar came up again and after a few minutes my laptop shut down again. It's an exact repeat of what happened before. I've tried restoring in Safe Mode, when I click on the backup file nothing happens, I don't even get asked permission. I've tried the solution which was shown on the HP website titled ' how to backup files using recovery manager '. I had to copy the MINWINPC file to my desktop, I done that and still nothing. "HELP" John

Check the HP website for a possible upgrade the the recovery manager software. Hopefully this will cure the problem in restoring your data.
Go to the Link below, tick the "download drivers and software" radio button, then type in you model number in the search box and then hit enter, when the page loads select you Operating System. Your drivers page will appear. Look under "Software-Solutions"
    http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/en/support_task.html
Also, try opening Recovery manager first, then select the backup file from there, rather than executing the backup exe file. If it fails again try restoring a few folders from the backup rather than the entire backup

can I back up my photos on my iphone directly to an external harddrive for safekeeping? My iPhone is full and my Mac laptop is full. What is the best solution besides buying a new laptop?

Not "directly" but you can use the MacBook to send the backup to the external HD.

Use the function buttons to change the location of the Media Folder Location.

When you installed Snow Leopard, Tiger was replaced, leaving your programs and files intact.
What is causing your freezing problem is unknown, you can take Kappy's advice and remove everything, but you lose your files and free iLife programs that came with Tiger/new machine.
The 10.6.3 disk you "upgraded" with has the full 10.6.3 on it, but no free iLife suit, so a erase and install will remove what you already have installed.
You can try to locate your problem without the erase and install method by running through this list of fixes.
Step by Step to fix your Mac
But before you do anything, backup your personal data off the machine to a extenal drive and disconnect.
    Most commonly used backup methods
Because if you have to follow Kappy's advice and wipe and install 10.6 fresh, it will cure your problem in nearly 99% of cases, but you have to rebuild everything. All programs and files.
How to erase and install Snow Leopard 10.6
If this is all too much for you, then STOP and call a local PC/Mac service or competant friend to assist you.
Yuo might need to install more RAM into the machine to make 10.6 run better as well.

  • Transfer toanother laptop then to external harddrive

    Hi,
Really need help, I have an old laptop which has 1,100 tracks on itunes, i also have a new laptop with a few tracks on itunes. What i want to do it transfer all 1,200 tracks onto an external hard drive and run it through the new laptops itunes!!!
Not sure the best way to do it, and want to be able to delete the tracks off new laptop so it frees up the memory. Which is why I bought an external hard drive!!
Any help would be very much appreciated!!!
    Thanks

Transfer them to your computer first: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4083
Then transfer them from your computer to your external hard drive in what ever manner you would normally.

  • External harddrive (e-sata) keeps freezing under linux...

...and a reboot into windows is required to get it to remount. I have no idea what is causing this behavior and it seems to happen at random. I don't know if this would happen under windows as I hardly even use windows any more. Once it happens I have to boot into windows and then power cycle the external harddrive before either OS will recognize it and remount it. Does anyone here know why this might be happening or how to at least find out what is causing this to happen. Cavalry makes this external harddrive and I'm pretty sure there is a western digital harddrive inside. Let me know if you need any other information. Thanks for any help.

There has been a virtual plethora of other issues attributed to the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT. I don't think anyone has yet really figured out which are truly related and which are not. The GPU is soldered onto the logic board, along with the CPU and other "controllers," so when the GPU overheats and begins cracking solder joints, it seemingly could affect a variety of things.

  • Can somebody please please help me! External harddrive not readable due to dumb mistake!

What is quite possibly one of the dumbest decisions i ever made in my life, I disconnected my external harddrive from my imac & plugged it into a laptop that has Windows 7 to trasfer footage from there to my imac more quicker. I clciked an option that allowed me to assign a letter to it to it can be read by the laptop (however, I would of needed to format the harddrive which I thankfully didn't). Please understand that erasing the entire harddrive is NOT an option! I am a filmmaker & I have so many years of work on there, including videos, music, & documents.
When the computer starts up I get hit with "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer"! I tried Disk Utiity & even though it recognizes the drive's existence, I cannot repair or mount...nor can I access any of the files! I also tried Diskwarrior & got "directory cannot be rebuilt, the file system is unsupported".
If theres anything you guys can do to help me, please do so. My life was on that harddrive & losing it would be the most devistating thing I could ever experience. A movie I finished not too long ago...is also on that harddrive. I'll send you a full video completely thanking you for your help!

Call a professional data recovery service such as DriveSavers. Their services are very expensive, but without backups, you have no choice but to pay whatever they ask.

  • Needed disk space, bought an external harddrive and

Just dragged the icon for my hard drive to the icon for the back up.
It is a packard bell and I used the disk utility to erase and set it up for mac.
It shows both the Macintosh HD and an alias for the hard drive. Is it that easy?
Can I start clearing stuff off the lap top? If I erase stuff off the lap top I guess I have made a copy of it on the external, have I not?
Dumb question I hope, just do not want to completely lose files.
A lot of old photos not being used by iWeb at this point, but will be needed soon.

So your laptop hard drive is called "Macintosh HD"
right? Approx how big is it? And what is the name
given to the new external harddrive? Approx how big
    is it?
Mac HD is original capacity 37.14 used 32.01 free 5.12
Back up is new external capacity capacity 232.76 used 7.65 free 225.11
Hummmm, something is missing I have download carbon copy and will try using that.
Usually dragging your Macintosh HD icon to the
external drive should copy most everything you would
want to keep. But it doesn't copy some of the hidden
files for the system, etc. Probably okay. Just
compare the size of the "Macintosh HD" folder on the
external hard drive with your harddrive on the
laptop...do a Get Info on both.
The best way I know of to make an exact copy of your
hard drive is to use a program called Carbon Copy
    Cloner, available here...
    http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html
What it will do is to make an exact image file of
your harddrive and then you will be able to mount it
and copy things from it when you need to.

  • I can't access my itunes from my external harddrive anymore

I hope someone can provide some guidance and insight regarding the following problem:     I have an imac g5  osx 10.3.9 and I used to access my itunes library from my external harddrive (maxtor). While living overseas last year I bought a Mac Book osx 10.6.8 and initally was successful in accessing my itunes library from my maxtor external harddrive. After two weeks my Mac Book started ejecting the harddrive and I wasn't able to use it again (maybe something to do with it needing too much power. I have found many similar discussions on this).    Now I am back home and using my imac g5 again but am having problems accessing my itunes library on the external harddrive. The imac recognises the external harddrive but if I try and play a song on itunes it says it cannot be found and I have to manually direct it to the song on the external harddrive. It may play or it may freeze. I have tried to reset everything through itunes preferences but nothing changes or else everything freezes.
when I got the Mac Book I tried to set up the Time Machine and I think that is when things started going wrong with my external harddrive. I am not too computer savvy so I'm not too sure.
Thanks in advance for any help.

  • External harddrive and filefault

    Hello,
I just started last year with my first macbook and because I went to Africa for three months I bought an external harddrive. Timemachine was copying everything on the harddrive and then my laptop got stolen. I just bought a new one now but nobody can get anything of my harddrive. It seemed that I put filefault on my stolen macbook and I had no idea. Now people are telling me timemachine put filefault also on the harddrive so it's hard to get something off but I also read that when you have filefault, timemachine only puts stuff on the harddrive when you're logged out. Who knows a solution?

An external hard drive does not work all the time, if the computer goes to sleep, it goes to sleep to. Also, even if computer is active, it goes to sleep if no activity with it. How it works exactly depends on the manufacturer and the controller inside, called to optimize such a behavior. I have several such external discs, not all are good at optimizing their performance, but—in general—they behave OK.
If you put computer to sleep, then switch off external disk, you adopt a totally unrecommended solution, as you abruptly interrupt communication between computer and external disk. If you wish to let ED connected to mac all the time, then do nothing, system and ED controller will optimize activity.

  • Problem with mounting external harddrive

Today, I've installed Arch for the first time after two years with Ubuntu. It seems to be working pretty well, but I've got a problem while mounting my external harddrive. The disc is has to partition, one formatted as ext3 and one as NTFS. Both partition shows up at the desktop, but after a while I get an error message concerning that the NTFS-partition cannot be mounted. It still appears as mounted, but I can't get access to it. The ext3-partition seems to be working, but when I try to copy a folder, the whole system freezes, and I haven't found any other things to do than pressing te power off-button.

Does anyone have an idea on what to do with this problem?

You do perhaps have to include the partitions in the fstab file. This could help you:
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Fstab
You want to mount /dev/sdb1 (ext3) and /dev/sdb2 (ntfs) to any folders preferably in /mnt. You will have to create them as root. Have a look at
    ls -l /dev/disk/by-uuid/
Maybe you want to mount from there as this method is not dependent on the order and usb port number you plug it in. For ntfs you can choose
    noauto,uid=1000,gid=100,umask=027
as mount options in fstab if your user-id is 1000.

  • Brand New Macbook keeps freezing on start up...

So, just bought my first MAC and having a horrible experience so far. Brand new computer right out of box froze on me on star-up (at the screen with the spinning thing and the apple logo). So I hold down the power down to restart it and then it boots fine. The computer works fine after that, but when i turn off the computer for a few hours and try to turn it back on, it freezes again at the same spot.
I called Mac support and they told me to re-install the OS using archiving option, did it and didn't solve the issue, and actually it gave me a Kernel problem after that... So I called again they told me to do a clean install... did it.. and still doing it... I have tried repairing the permissions or whatever and nothing, still freezes on start-up.
Obviously, they won't let me return it so I can get a brand new one, they want to try to repair it first. This is sad since the computer is not even 1 week old...
Anyone has any clue what the problem might be ? At this point to me it seems its a hardware issue, i don't think it's software...

I tried the fdsk and it did not work.
This morning i got a Kernel problem.
    PANIC (CUP 0 CALLER 0X003A92A) or 1
UNABLE TO FIND DRIVER FOR THIS PLATFORM "ACPI"
    DEBUGGER CALLED <PANIC>
There were a bunch of numbers and thing in between but you get the point... and as i was typing this message on my laptop, it froze, had to reboot it.
Here is the deal, which i don't think it's what's causing it since when i first turned it on without any of these plugged to it, it still froze on start but... I have the Apple pro keyboard and mouse attached to it, plus the Ipod cable + have it plugged to a Dell Monitor.
Would any of those things cause any problems ? I wouldnt think so, it better not because my sister's dell does the same thing and she has never had a problem with an external keyboard/mouse and monitor plugged in while turning on the computer...
Pretty sure this computer is just Dead on Arrival like someone said, the bad part is i bought it online at Apple store and i couldnt just walk in and return it...
Any other suggestions besides calling them and demanding a return ?
    Thanks guys.

  • Keyboard, trackpad & external harddrive suddenly stopped responding but external mouse will work?

I have a 2007 MacBook, but the harddrive was replace begining on 2011. Ealier today mid-email my keyboard suddenly froze and my cursor dissappeared. The power button still worked so I was able to turn off my computer. When I restarted I had about 3 hours of normal functioning before the same thing happened again. The entire keyboard becomes unresponsive (including the caps lock light that does not light up) and the mouse is no longer visible. I tried connecting an external mouse and this seems to work fine, but I still can't type anything in.
I connected my external harddrive to copy over all my files (incase this was the begining of the end). About two minutes in the light started blinking on the harddrive and i was given the message from the computer saying the harddrive was unplugged... which it was not!
I have restarted the computer a few times, the keyboard and trackpad never come back on, the computer can no longer recongnize any external harddrive or thumbdrive but works fine with the external mouse.
Does anyone have any idea what is going on?
Thank you! I really appreciate your time and any advice you may have.

Make sure it's not something as simple as the battery bulging up and exerting upward pressure on the trackpad, keyboard, and USB / FW ports.
That's what happened to my Macbook and it showed similar symptoms.
I simply took out the battery and let the MacBook rest for a 48 hours.  Then I ran it strictly on the power supply and it ran fine.
At that point I bought a replacement generic battery through Amazon for about $40 including shipping and taxes.  I figured why waste money on the Apple original part if it was that very Apple original battery that went bad and bulged up like a toad?
MacBook has been running just fine for months now, maybe a year.
