Tecra M1 graphics corruption: display becomes unreadable

My M1 is used with external monitor. Occassionally I get the video display corrupted. The display becomes unreadable and the mouse trails create a continuous 1cm wide path over the screens. It is barely possible to read anything on the screen in this situation; I can just find enough info to initiate a shutdown.
On restart everything is fine again. I have re-seated and swapped memory around, and I have just upgraded BIOS to the latest version availabel (which may help but I can't comment yet). Searched the internet for similar issues to no avail.
Any ideas anyone?
Problem was very infrequent (monthly?) until recently, then 3 times in 2 days.

Hello
I have noticed something similar but only when some avi or mpg file is open with Realplayer or WMP. While film is running every time when I remove player window to external display or bring it back to LCD I have this strange behavior. Just restart helps.
When the player is not moved everything is fine. I really dont why this happen but I can live with it and I didnt try to reinstall anything because this notebook I use for work only and dont want to change anything.
I just hope we write about the same thing. ;)

  • At random times the display distorts. It is mostly cutting through at a 45 degree angle, as if the display is on the face of a cube. Since they don't clear properly, the entire display becomes unreadable. This started when I upgraded to 4.0.1.

The screen seems to distort as if the display is offset at a 45 degree angle on the face of a cube.

    Try to disable hardware acceleration.
    * Tools > Options > Advanced > General > Browsing: "Use hardware acceleration when available"
If disabling hardware acceleration works then check if there is an update available for your graphics display driver.

  • Graphics corrupted / garbled display on Core Duo MacBook Pro (ATI)

My first-generation (Core Duo) MacBook Pro (with ATI chipset) is having video problems.
When this happens, the graphics become corrupted / display becomes garbled and the computer freezes shortly afterwards making it basically unusable. You can just about follow a garbled mouse pointer around, but it is unresponsive.
The only solution is a hard reset (power button for seven seconds).
    Has anyone encountered this problem?
At first, I suspected that the computer was overheating as it seemed to occur only after prolonged use - but in the past two days, it could freeze immediately at login screen basically making it completely unusable.
Apple Hardware Test (on original CD) says "No Problems Found", but I still suspect hardware trouble as this only began occuring a week or so after my computer had the left fan replaced (it stopped working after an earlier problem in January at the Apple Store in Highcross Leicester.
I suspect something ELSE is wrong and that it requires service again, so am planning to go to the store in Birmingham on Sunday (which is closer to me -- I went to the Leicester store last time). What should I ask Apple to look at? The graphic corruption occurs even when running right off the Leopard CD, or even on the Apple Hardware Test!

Hi - thanks for your help with the issue. Just as an update, I brought my Mac in for service on the 8th February at the Apple Store Bullring – and oddly, it worked perfectly in the Store. However, I showed them this thread and the pictures they had – and they replaced the logic board and apparently it's one of the costliest parts ever possible to place, shockingly expensive that it's like the cost of a new laptop! However as it's under AppleCare (well, higher education parts and labour warranty) it was covered. Phew!
I got my Mac back today, and so far, it appears to be working perfectly (though as the graphic problems were intermittent, I'm making sure I do backups!), and fingers crossed, I should now have a working Mac once again!

  • Graphical corruption in X after playing media or using chromium

In SMPlayer (xv output) and sdlmame, when I switch to full screen, afterwards X will show graphical corruption. This does not seem to happen with VLC or GnomeMPlayer.
For SMPlayer, the task bar space between icons and the pager, and the rest of it after the pager will become unreadable and just a mess of grey and coloured lines. After about a minute when the clock applet updates the time, it will redraw and become readable again (only the clock applet, not the whole bar). To make the rest visible too, I have to move the mouse over it and click the icons (volume, brightness, and so on) so they get redrawn.
In the case of sdlmame, the desktop background picture even gets corrupted in maybe its top 25% area over the full screen width.
When I start chromium web browser, the top part of the browser window and the task bar above it will flicker like crazy with corrupted lines. Sometimes the whole window will flicker, I think. This happens mostly while typing in an URL, and leaves the same corruption in the task bar as SMPlayer (->have to mouseover/click on the icons to make them redraw).
It happens _all the time_ if I just move the mouse over the website (for examle google translate). I don't even have to click on anything, just moving will make the whole upper half of the chromium window flicker like crazy with corrupted lines, rendering the page unreadable.
In Firefox this problem does not occur at all.
I'm using Xfce4 and Compositor is disabled.

I am now pretty sure that this is a software bug in Leopard. I have been back to Tiger for 10 days straight now and the problem hasn't reoccurred.
It can't the temperature, because I installed iStats and they show the hottest part is GPU, but it is only 51 degrees C (123.8 fahrenheit) during hours of heavy use. Also back in leopard I tried out a fan control app and set all fans to max RPM (which was really loud), and that didn't affect the random polygons.
I don't know why it happens only in Leopard but I am not going to update back to it till I know for sure that this has been fixed.
PS. The only system level 3rd party app I had installed in Leopard when the problem first occurred was Steer mouse, but I doubt a mouse driver can cause this kind of a problem. Besides I have it always installed in Tiger too. This is why I outclose the possibility of 3rd party apps being the cause.

  • KT4AV - Graphics Corruption

I just recently purchased the KT4AV with a new stick of DDR RAM (see profile for completely specs).  I upgraded from a K7T Turbo2 and 512MB PC133.  My video card ran smoothly with no evidence of problems in this configuration.  With my new setup, graphics abnormalities are evident even on bootup!  For instance, the energy star logo has black lines in it (while the BIOS is doing it's thing)...and the Windows XP logo on startup also has these black lines.  Running mpg/avi/etc within windows..they have black lines as well.  This becomes full blown graphics corruption when I run Direct3D graphics...for example UT2004.
I also have assessed this problem by runnign ATItool (it comes with a spinning cube and nicely shows how my graphics corruption progresses)...b/c the strange thing about this problem is that this corruption starts to go away after the computer has been running for about 1hr -2 hrs.  However, if I shut it down overnight...the graphics corruption is very noticeable upon bootup.  For instance, using ATItool, I get corruption within seconds of starting the spinning cube (Direct3D) when I start the computer for the first time.  Then if I let the compuer run for an hour or two, I can then let ATItool run for a long time...at least 20 minutes...without the graphics problem.
I have tried to slightly change memory timing settings...and that doesn't effect the problem. I have AGP fast writes disabled (b/c it doesn't like being enabled...just like it doesn't like being at 8X AGP...which from readin through these boards, I can see is a problem...but doesn't make a difference to me since 4X is just as fast)...I have pretty much played around with the BIOS settings...going from more on the performance side to the normal side, and nothign changes.  My BIOS version is 5.0 right now, and although I know there is a 5.1, it doesn't say anything about this problem so I prefer not to upgrade.  I also have run MemTest86 for 1/2 hour and there were no memory errors.  This was on a "hot" boot so maybe I shoudl try it on the cold boot?  B/c of course I suspect either the memory or the motherboard could be the problem since those are the two components I changed. So I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas why this is happening...i have never encountered graphics corruption that goes AWAY with the computer being on for a while and then comes back when it has been off.   Any helpful advice would be appreciated!  Thanks...let me know if anyone would like a picture of the graphics corruption from the spinning cube on ATItool.

Ok well I think this next set of experiments is fairly telling:
osnavi, I took your advice and decided to disconnect the case fans.  Before I did though, I went into the BIOS and checked CPU and SYS temps at idle:  47,37 respectively.  I also checked to make sure that there were no corruption of the WinXP logo (since my system had been up and running and I had just finished playing UT2004   I figured everything would be ok...which it was).  So then I shut down the computer and disconnected the 2 case fans.  Then I let the computer cool down for 5 min or so.  I then booted up the computer (w/o the fans connected) and let it start booting so I could see logo...and graphics corruption was still present...i then quickly pressed Ctrl-Alt-Del and rebooted, then went directly into BIOS and recorded temps displayed there:  CPU->37, SYS->28.  I then waited for about 8 minutes for temps to stabilize and reach max:  CPU->47 SYS->40 (surprised it's not higher since 2 case fans are off, but that's another issue!)  Anyways, I then exited the BIOS and..bingo...no corruption...videos/games/Direct3D all fine in windows.  So the conclusion from this seems to be that 1) the case fans don't seem to contribute to the corruption, 2) this corruption is definitely temp linked and something happens when temp goes up by ~10 deg, and 3) this problem seems to be independent of windows since the problem exists and can be resolved before windows even starts.
Now what could be heating up that makes my system run like it should??? No idea!  Anybody?
Ok just to add a bit more info...reconnected both case fans....let system cool off....then restarted (corruption present)...entered BIOS...waited for same amount of time as before, and temps were stable at CPU->46 and SYS->36.  However, as I mentioned above, I could get the corruption to go away at 47/40, the corruption would not go away at 46/36...so it seems to be a case temp dependent problem.  Anyways, I guess this isn't such terrible problem since it does go away, however, I'm concerned that it indicates that the mobo may be defective in some way?

  • I was trying to move iphoto library to my external hardrive, realised it was incompatible with Mac.  The iphoto will not open now, message is "Iphoto library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable".  I have read other posts.

    Hi,
I was trying to save a copy of my iphoto library by copying images to my external harddrive.  I wasn't sure how to do it, realised the hard drive is not compatible. Now the iphoto library wont open and reads "iphoto library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable".
I have tried to use options command and click on iphoto then rebuild yet nothing happens and same error message occurs.
I have gone to  my personal drive, desktop, iphoto library, and found file Albumdata.xml and when i click on it, there is a lot of text in it, i am assuming these are all my photos.
I have tried clicking and dragging this file to iphoto app and it doesn't work, as the same error comes up in iphoto being in use or unreadable....
What am I meant to do with albumdata.xml file and how do I reopen Iphoto from here on in?
Please help as I am not technically minded and still trying to understand how to use the Macbook at all as I am used to Microsoft.
    Thank you very much,
    KS

Rule Number One - NEVER go directly uinto the iPhoto library - there are no user servicable parts in it and making any change no matter how small can corrupt your library and cause data or photo loss
Exactly how were you trying to save a copy of your iPhoto library?
Albumdata.xml does not contain your photos - and again NEVER make any changes to the content of the iPhoto library - no dragging - no changes - never go into the library
We need to know exactly what you did
And probalby the easiest solution is to load your backup from before you messed things up
For reference after you get things working
Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive
    LN

  • I-Photo keeps coming up with the following error -Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable.

Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable. The solution suggested is restart and hold option/command down. I have done this and the options given make sense but when I try to run any of the suggested solutions the same error comes up as above
We have back ups to Time Machine but I am concerned that these backups may be corrupt as well so before trying I wish to try and repair
Has any one come into this issue before?
    Running Mac OS X (10.7.5)
    Thank you

Tell us more please - so it is hard to guess.
Sometimes really another program is using your library - then a simple "restart" of the system should fix this. If iPhoto is trying to open the wrong library, you may be seeing this error message. Then try to switch to the correct library by holding down the ⌥-key while launching iPhoto.
If really something is wrong, weneed to know more:
When did this start? Have you been importing new photos? Did iPhoto crash? Have you moved your iPhoto Library to an external drive? Where is your iPhoto library located? If on an external drive, how is the drive formatted?
Also, what is your version of the iPhoto application?
Have you updated any software recently or installed new software, before the problem first occured?
Have you run any maintainance programs, that help to clean your Mac, like MacKeeper?

  • Tired of graphical corruption resulting in depth changing to 256 colours.

When will the bug in the Boot Camp WinXP ATI Radeon 2600 HD Pro (mid-2007 24" 2.8GHz iMac that causes graphical corruption resulting in colour depth switching to 256 colours be fixed? This happens after a random time running WinXP (from mere minutes to hours), and can only be fixed by restart.
Years have gone by and Boot Camp updates, reinstalling Windows, a new 24" iMac (same model sigh), and tearing my hair out in frustration as Applecare support and bug reports achieve nothing has left me rather disillusioned. FYI - Apple Boot Camp graphics driver is the only one that works with my model iMac.
Still, it's gone on for so long I'm nearly ready to buy a new iMac. Can anyone tell me if this problem exists in any of the new models? Hopefully not since they use different GPUs, but given Apple's inability to sort even this most basic and glaring of bugs, I thought it wise to ask first.

This appears to have resolved the issue on restarting the system. I guess I must have accidentally moved this slider while looking through the system settings.
It doesn't explain how rotating the display twice "fixes" (or reverts) the changes made. That's a matter for a dev team if they ever want to bother looking into it though.
    Many thanks for the help,
    Duncan.

  • Graphics corruption in Mission Control after 10.7.2 upgrade

I've upgraded to 10.7.2 this morning and am now getting graphics corruption upon entering Mission Control. A screenshot of this can be seen here:
    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/16496720/Lion-10.7.2-screen%20corruption.jpg
This is occurring on a 2011 Macbook Air 13" on the built-in display as well as with an attached 30" ACD.
I'll keep looking further into this, incl possible situations where this doesn't occur, but in the meantime - has anybody else encountered this?
    Cheers
    Steffen.

I have had the same issue since initial 10.7.0 install.  Doesn't seem to affect function at all.. but disconcerting nonetheless.  I have yet to find anything acknowleding the problem or how to fix it.

  • Graphics corruption issue continues in Mavericks 10.9.1

Bad news: A graphics issue reported for Mavericks 10.9 continues in 10.9.1.  The drop-shadows surrounding some windows have no gradient or translucency, and in some cases,  Finder windows  show colored pixels in place of the content.  My Mac configuration:  MacBook Pro Model ID 6,2 - Mid-2010 15", Std RAM: 4 GB
Here is a screen shot, taken the day that 10.9.1 was released (December 16, 2013)
A workaround that has been posted in these threads [ System Preferences > Energy Saver > Automatic Graphics Switching (off) ] is not acceptable to me, since it reduces battery life significantly.   Also, it is being reported that this workaround works only temporarily, and/or intermittently.
If you are experiencing this issue, please add to this thread.  There were also reports in the Mac press that this might be one of the issues that Apple was working on for 10.9.1, but apparently not.  Here's one article: http://9to5mac.com/2013/11/15/apple-seeds-first-os-x-mavericks-10-9-1-beta-to-de velopers-with-focuses-on-mail-graphics/
Here are two other discussion threads that reported the same issue with 10.9:
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/24150281#24150281
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/24150278#24150278
Let's hope that Apple is monitoring this thread and issues a dot-release quickly, rather than having us wait until 10.9.2.   Apple: please feel welcome to contact me for troubleshooting, if that can help.
    Thank you.

I'm in agreement with Steve H, on this one.  This is in no way, shape, or form a hardware problem.  This problem was non-existent before the upgrade to Mavericks.  I will be submitting another bug report (translation:  complaint) through the feedback page, and will continue to do so until Apple, in some way, acknowledges that this is a problem and that they are, actively, working to resolve it.  It's beyond ridiculous that there is STILL no fix for this.  I don't know if my problems have been as extreme as other users, but this is still a major nuisance.  The specific issues I, continue, to have are:
Shadows around app and finder windows rendering improperly
Dashboard widgets and app icons in the Launchpad are a noisy mess of "static"
App names in the Dock are just "noise" when moused over.
These will always occur when the integrated (Intel) GPU is active.  If any of these symptoms crop up, both known fixes immediately, and only temporarily, resolve it:
Using gfxCardStatus to toggle to the discrete GPU
Disabling "Automatic Graphics Switching" in the Energy Saver preferences
Both of these fixes have the undesirable side affect of defaulting to the discrete GPU which is a greater drain on the battery.  This is a band-aid NOT a solution.
There are a growing number of threads on this problem:

  • Iphoto doesn t start.  Message received: Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable

Iphoto doesn t work.  Message received: Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable.
I removed it and I tried several times to reinstall it without success.

Some of your user files (not system files) have incorrect permissions or are locked. This procedure will unlock those files and reset their ownership, permissions, and access controls to the default. If you've intentionally set special values for those attributes, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it, but you do need to follow the instructions below.
Back up all data before proceeding.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to Step 2.
Enter the following command in the Terminal window in the same way as before (triple-click, copy, and paste):
    sudo find ~ $TMPDIR.. -exec chflags -h nouchg,nouappnd,noschg,nosappnd {} + -exec chown -h $UID {} + -exec chmod +rw {} + -exec chmod -h -N {} + -type d -exec chmod -h +x {} + 2>&-
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command may take several minutes to run, depending on how many files you have. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1, if you prefer not to take it, or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
              Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open. In that window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button
    Select
               ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

When accessingh iPhoto all I get is "Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable" How do I regain access to iPhoto. All I get is an instruction to "quit"

    Hi LarryHN,
I was loading images via a flash memory card which was inserted into a USB holder – during the 'download' the connection was broken [faulty USB connection]. I then re-inserted the card via the USB holder the connection was 're-broken' with a screen message indicating that 'force eject' was an option. I clicked the 'force eject' option and when I re-inserted the card/holder 120 images [approx] were missing and when I tried to open iPhoto the screen messages detailed above were displayed.
Current software is: iPhoto v9.2.3; Snow Leopard v10.6.8.
    Using TD's Option 1:
i.e. “hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database” resulted in .
"Your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable" with a window request “quit”
& Option 2 “Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function”.
    Resulted in the following message:
“The library could not be loaded because an error occurred. The library database could not be loaded; no such table RKVersionFaceContent. The album data file for the library 'iPhoto Library' could not be read” - [my italics]
Followed your instructions, re. 'new library' and it worked perfectly. All I have to do is select 'iPhoto Library2' and proceed as normal.
Thank You very much for your excellent advice and solution.
p.s. And this is completely 'off the wall' as I don't expect a positive outcome, but is it possible that all the images 'deleted' from my flash memory card could be somewhere in/on my HDD? If so, how would I proceed to recover them?
    Many thanks again.

  • Multi-Monitor PSE 9 Corrupt Display

    Multi-Monitor PSE 9 Corrupt Display
    Evening all -
First post here at PS Gurus.  I hope that you guys can lend your  expertise in pinning down an issue that I am having and have also had on  other PS versions.  I am running
    Windows 7 (64 bit) Ultimate
    2600k / 8 gb ram / 256 Samsung SSD / 460 GTX 1GB
    Matrox Triplehead 2 Go with x3 22" monitors (resolution 5040 x1050)
A fresh install of the trial version of PSE 9 is yielding corrupt main  toolbar and options bar (for each tool selected).  The application is  expanding full screen on all three monitors just fine but the toolbar  are corrupt - partly transparent / party compressed to the left.  No  matter what I have done in terms of resizing the application window the  results are the same or get worse.
On another computer I installed PS CS5 (also under win7 64 bit  environment) and I was having the same issue.  However, at the time I  thought the install was bad in some shape or form so I dropped the  issue.
I am now considering PSE 9 but see that Win7 + Matrox just isn't  working correctly with this combination of hardware / software  components.
Has anyone see this issue or know of a potential fix?  I have read a  couple of threads on the net with similar issues but I don't see any  resolution.  Your help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks-
    Benjamin

My main reason for testing PSE-O 9.0 was to find out if this "bug" was fixed. I can not use PSE-O to organize and show pictures the way I want to with this weaknes in place. Your answer is probably correct, bun not at all helpfull.
So thank you for trying, but my test of PSE O is over for now.
Does anybody out there know of other products that will do the trick?

  • All my photo's are missing from iPhoto and I'm getting a message "your photo library is either in use by another application or has become unreadable"

Yesterday when I opened iPhoto all of my photo's were missing.  After many hours of frustrating time looking how to resolve, I decided to try again this morning.  When I tried to open iphoto, I got the message I referenced above regarding the library is either in use or has become unreadable.
My photos are not in iPhoto anymore.  There's nothing there.  iphoto acts like its never even been set up.    I have iPhoto '11 version 9.4.3. I have OS X Lion version 10.7.5.  However, when I go to "All My Files" and then under "images", there are over 10,000 images.  I see my photos (I guess it's all of them - i have no idea how many there were) and other "images" also.  When i go to "pictures" I only see the 15 or so items I have scanned.  In "iPhoto Library", there is 1 picture of what looks like a deck of playing cards with flowers on them - I don't know where that came from.  But also in "iPhoto Library"  under the heading "desktop", it shows a size of over 27GB and under "kind" it says "package".  Still under desktop and "Photo Booth Library" it shows 53GB and under "kind" it says "Photo Booth Library".  Before I opened iPhoto to view my photo's, I went to "empty trash" yesterday (not in iPhoto) and it showed over 65,000 items to delete.  There were no more than 200 that I could actually see.  So, I don't understand.  I let it delete a couple of thousand before I stopped it because I didn't know what it was doing.  I know - not too smart.  I don't know if that has anything to do with iPhoto or not; I'm just throwing that out there.  Today I went to "empty trash" and it now shows the 200 items that I can see in there.  Don't know what happened.
I do have a time capsule but not sure if I’m using it correctly. If you were to tell me to restore to a certain point, I’d have to be walked thru the process.
I downloaded “iPhoto Library Manager”, not exactly sure how to use it, but got a message basically saying the library nor the database could be loaded and that album data file for the library “iPhoto Library” could not be read.
I’ve spent hours and hours and hours searching the web for answers but I’m scared to do much of anything thinking I could end up losing all my photos if I haven’t already.
    Please help!
    Thank you!

Apply the two fixes below in order as needed:
    Fix #1
Launch iPhoto with the Command+Option keys held down and rebuild the library.
Since only one option can be run at a time start
with Option #4 and then #1 as needed.
    Fix #2
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
2 - click on the Add Library button, navigate to your Home/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.
3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File ➙ Rebuild Library menu option.
4 - In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
5 - Click on the Create button.
Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments.  However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost. The original library will be left untouched for further attempts at fixing the problem or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory.
