Tecra M1 won't boot up at times

This is strange, sometimes it boots up correctly, but some others I wont boot at all. No matter if I'm only on AC, battery or booth, the power on led will light but nothing happens and I can't hear the typical sound of the hard disc running.
Apart from that, I've detected that with the system on if I knock on the flat areas on the sides of the touch panel the laptop reboots and the screen shows artefacts.

On this virtual way nobody can say for sure what the problem is. As Joe already wrote it is hardware related issue and it should be checked by technicians. Fact is that this Tecra M1 is pretty old notebook model (I had it 8 years ago) so I think repair is not a option.

  • PB 15" won't Boot/Loses Date & Time

I have a 15" PB 15" that runs fine for a few days on either battery or AC, then suddenly won't boot (apple logo w/spinning gear). I can get it running again after running Disk Warrior (from a Fire Wire drive), but notice that when booting from that FW drive that a message pops up informing me that date & time was set to a date prior to 2001. Anyhow, after rebuilding by DW, the system runs fine for a few days, but then reverts back to the same problem.
I should note that after booting from the FW drive, and before running DW, I could not run Disk Utility on the problem MacintoshHD because, while it showed the drive, Permission Repair was greyed out, not allowing me to access the problem drive. Sustem does, BTW, boot from CD also. The fact that it boots from CD and FireWire drives leads me to believe that the internal HD is my problem. I'm scared. however, about the message that date & time was changed at the time of failure.
Would (or could) the date & time be lost if problem was limited to the HD ? I ordered a new HD, and hope that the problem is not the Logic Board. FWIW, I have done the PMU reset procedure, and that didn't solve anything.

Okay, it seems the problem is resolved, and the cause seems to have been a bad 256Mb DIMM. At least that's all I can imagine it was. I still hadn't gotten around to replacing the HDD nor the clock battery. While waiting to receive these two parts, I removed the replaced the second memory DIMM (a 256Mb) with a 1GB. and it's been running about a week with no problems. (I even accidentally dropped the PB yesterday, and it's STILL functioning fine. I can only imagine that the 256 DIMM was flaky, yet passing all diagnostics. Maybe the loss of date & time problem was caused by the machine not having been used for a long time prior to my purchase a few weeks ago. (Is that battery a re-chargable one?) Maybe now that I have the machine on each day, it remains charged enough to hold the data.
Anyhow, I'm going to upgrade the HDD from 80 to 160 and hold onto the spare clock battery just in case. Thanks for the help guys. Walt

  • Tecra A4 won't boot - switches off after 3 seconds

    Hey all,
I really hope you can help me on this. Recently I bought a cheap Laptop Toshiba Tecra A4 at Ebay. It was said there is a hard drive defect only...it's not.
When I try to switch the laptop on the lamps go on and the DVD drive starts to spin..everything normal. But then after about 3 seconds it switches off before it can reach the bootscreen - like I would remove the power cable.
The very weird thing is that sometimes, let's say every 1 of 15 tries the laptop starts like it should and boots up from my linux live-CD. Then I can work for hours and nothing bad happens ... until I want to switch it on again. Then the game starts from the very beginning.
    I already tried to:
    - remove the defect hard disk
    - remove the power cable only
    - remove only the battery
    - replace the RAM or use only one of the two
    - to remove both RAM
    - remove the power cable and the battery overnight to reset the CMOS
    ...nothing changed.
I would be very pleased if anyone could help me. So far I found only unanswered forum entries with that problem in the WWW - so at least, I am not the only one going mad :-)
    Thanks a lot
    Hans

I can't promise that this advice will be of any use to you but your symptoms seem similar to a problem that I had with my Tecra S3 when I tried to run it on battery only after an extended period (months) running only on its docking bay. I found that the battery was not charging properly and ceased to charge after it got to approximately 23% and would fail suddenly under use without giving any warning of battery depletion. When trying to restart the laptop, (before I had determined that the battery was faulty), I had symptoms similar to those you describe relating to shutting off before reaching the boot screen.
I would recommend you try running without the old battery present in the chassis, if the A4 will allow that. If that works for any duration exceeding the short limits you have been experiencing, I would try and temporarily source another battery (preferably with a provable 100% charge) from any source that you can manage. If this proves to be beneficial, you may need to invest in your own new battery. But if not you may have another issue with the physical connection between the power cable jack point and the battery (maybe a dry solder joint that is temperature sensitive). To determine that would probably require Toshiba hardware technical support, or at least knowledge of the motherboard circuits and some circuit testing tools. It could be costly as well.
The very least you need to be able to do if you can restart the laptop for any length of time is to determine the state of the battery using any tools you may have on your Linux live-CD. You might investigate the BIOS version of the A4 and see if that helps by upgrading the ACPI interfaces, but a BIOS upgrade could be risky if you can not get reliable power.
    Hope that helps.

  • Toshiba Tecra A8 won't boot

My Toshiba A8 PTA83A-04F012 notebook will not boot. When I boot the machine, I get the normal Toshiba splash screen then the screen goes blanks with a blinking cursor in the upper left hand corner. Apart from the CPU fan kicking in, nothing else happens. I've tried to boot from an alternative devices (eg  CD-ROM) but the same thing happens. I’ve even tried to get into the bios (setup) but it ignores my request. The keyboard seems to function normally. Please help. Tony

Sounds like it could be ram, try it with only one ram strip at a time, also did you install any software recently that could be not working correctly? Does it work in safe mode? Also in the bios see if the computer is reading the hard drive correctly, or maybe you changed a setting in the bios and need to use the default setings Detailed specs if you need them from toshiba http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/support/jsp/modelContent.jsp?ct=SB&os=&category=&moid=160275...

  • Won't Boot Up, Using Time Capsule?

Alright, I'm having a field day of problems today with our iMac.
I was working with MyPublisher's application BookMaker 2.2 for Macs. It was working alright, but then it crashed on me. It caused me to get the spinning beach ball, and everything else running crashed also. I was able to move the windows around, but I couldn't do anything else. I tried going to the dock to force quit but was unable because it froze while trying to do so.
I used the power button on the back to shut it down. I came back in an hour or so and restarted it with no problems. I then attempted to use bookmaker again. It was working for about an hour with no problems. Then suddenly it froze again. My iTunes stopped playing and it did the same as I described earlier.
I shut it off again using the button in the back.
I booted up off of my install disk and attempted to repair it. It got about a minute in and this is the error I received - First Aid Failed: Filesystem verify or repair failed
So where do I go from here? I have a time capsule with a back up on it and I'm thinking of going that route. However do I need to erase the hard disk first? Or do I just select restore from backup?
Thank you ahead of time for the help!

    Hi Kendra
You probably should try again to repair your Startup Disk as outlined below:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/8492.html
If the repair still fails then run the Apple Hardware Test:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509
Then if no hardware issues are found, try restoring from your TC/TM backup:

  • Tecra a3 won't boot with new hdd

    hi
    tecra a3 model no PTA30E-02G008EN
i have a new 250gb hdd that has a clone of my previous (when working ok) hdd using EASEUS.
but it will not boot. after the BIOS it has a blank screen with a flashing white cursor top left.
the hdd appears ok using a usb caddy.
are there any obvious problems such as a maximum hdd size, or a BIOS update i need? Might it work if a split the 250Gb hdd into two partitions?
    thanks for your help
    mark

Mark, it's possible (but very unlikely) that your BIOS does not support 48-bit LBA. If that were the case, the partition would need to be less than about 137 GB. The information is in here.

Notice that large HDDs are offered for the Tecra A3.

Sorry, I don't know why the restored disk doesn't work. You could try to restore it to its original out-of-the-box contents using Toshiba recovery media. I'm guessing that would work.

  • Oh No, My Tecra S2 won't boot!

When I turn on the computer, it displays a back screen and tells me that I need to insert the Windows system disk to boot.  Well, way back when I bought my computer, I was not wise to the need to burn a system disk, so I have no disk to insert.  Is there any hope for me?

When the boot up begins press F8 and go into SAFE MODE.  Maybe F12 for that unit since no full model # given.
You stated no Recovery Disc, call www.toshiba.com and give them your model number to procure a disc.  OR, take to an authorized service provider for a diagnostic.  Reason it is asking for the disc is to do a REPAIR Function.  Is the fan consistently on when you boot?  Something you loaded conflicted, was they any service pack installed, new software, or ashutdown on the unit prior to updates being completed, or a power failure there?  Something for you too consider.

  • MacBook Pro 2011 won't boot

My early 2011 MacBook Pro 15" won't boot. Second time dealing with this this year. Apple Store charged me $300+ to fix it the first time. It worked for a few months, but stopped working again. Took it to the shop again and asked them to fix it for good this time. They wanted to charge me $310. I said NO. why would they charge me twice for a repair I asked them to do before? How widespread is this problem? I know for a fact I'm not the only one dealing with this problem.

What have you done to define your problem?  Look at this comprehensive troubleshooting article and perhaps you can find a solution:

    Hi!
    My G4 Dual 800Mhz Mac won´t boot.
2 times the date was on 01.01.1970
After 2 restarts the mac make nothing.
When i press the power on button nothing happens.
No light in the button, nothing. No startup sound, no Harddrive sound. Nothing...
    What should i make?
    A new power supply?
I tried a new battery, i have made a PMU Reset.
The problem ist still hold on.
    What should i make?

Hi, thorx, and welcome to the Discussions!
You have checked the power cord to insure it is transmitting power from the wall outlet, UPS, or surge suppressor, etc., right? If not, disconnect it from the back of the Mac and check it with a voltmeter or a simple electrical tester.
You can easily test the power supply with a voltmeter, while the power supply is in the Mac. Here's a link to the procedure, which is for a Gigabit Ethernet Mac. There is only one difference in this procedure when testing a QuickSilver; that is, the voltage reading at pin 22 should read +25 volts, not the +28 volts shown for the Gigabit Ethernet. Other than that, it's identical.
The procedure might look intimidating at first glance, but it really is pretty easy.
Here's another link to a page which has a color-coded pinout diagram, which might help to identify the pins by wire color, making things easier.

  • Macbook won't boot after time machine backup

I installed a program on my Mac that was causing some problems so I decided to do a time machine restore. I booted into recovery mode, selected restore from time machine backup and let it run. It finished completely but it gets stuck at the startup screen. I get halfway on the loading bar and it does not progress past there. I've waited up to an hour.
I am running Yosemite on a mid 2009 macbook. I am using a SSD and I know with trim enabled it sometimes won't boot up but I disabled it via terminal.
I've also ran disk utility on my HD and on my external HD. I'm getting no errors on both.
    Anyone have any ideas?

If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data, then reinstall the OS.* You don't need to erase the startup volume, and you won't need the backup unless something goes wrong. If the system was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you may need the Apple ID and password you used.
If you use FileVault 2, then before running the Installer you must launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the FileVault startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) It will be nested below another icon with the same name. Click the Unlock button in the toolbar and enter your login password when prompted. Then quit Disk Utility to be returned to the main Recovery screen.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it. The same goes for Xcode. All other data will be preserved.
*The linked support article refers to OS X 10.10 ("Yosemite"), but the procedure is the same for OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later.

  • 42RV535U won't boot. Yellow light blinks 3 times.

The title mostly says it all.  After a power outage ( AC disconnected ), my 42RV535U won't boot.  The yellow light keeps blinking 3 times.
I have tried disconnecting, waiting, then reconnecting the power and have tried different outlets.
Any ideas of what I can do to get it to boot, or to further debug/diagnose the problem?

  • Won't boot up - sleep light blinking 3 times

Hi - I have a macbookpro - it suddenly shut down and now won't boot up. When I press the power button I hear the hardrive make a noise " tzz tzz' then nothing - except the sleep light is blinking 3 times a second every few seconds. - I've tried taking out the battery and holding down the power button - taken out the RAM - nothing.
and of course my 90 day warranty ran out last week -
    Help gratefully appreciated....

Hi - Thanks for your reply, I had a look round the net and found that diagnosis - I don't think it's applicable to me as the machine was up and running to start with. My girlfriend was ill in bed and watching a dvd - could this have overheated the machine and are the 3 flashes to do with this? I've since found this
    http://static.scribd.com/docs/1ek00bgxjmm4u.swf?INITIAL_VIEW=width
which says it could be down to overheating - if so is there a way to reboot or is it a trip to the mac store ??

  • Won't boot up--frozen in time and space

My boyfriend tried installing Leopard or something on his iMac, and now it's completely messed up. It won't boot or anything. I realize that trying to install Leopard was a mistake, but it's done with now. Anyway, I'm pretty sure that he does not have an older boot like Tiger.
So my question is, can anything be done? Is there some magic keyboard combo I can do to wipe it clean, in an attempt to start new or something? Because right now it's a useless box, taking up space.

I'll try what musicmac suggested, as I do not own an earlier OS.
And, yes, Allan Jones, that is the right Mac. It looks just like it. I can't remember the exact specs, and can't really turn the Mac on to look at the specs, but I can try to give you some vague details.
I'm pretty sure that this is my Mac:
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/stats/imac1.25_20fp.html
The problem also is probably because my boyfriend used the OS disc that came with my MacBook Pro.

  • System won't boot with incorrect date/time

Hey, I setup a computer back home for VNC, however there was a power outage and now the BIOS has reset. Unfortunately it defaults the date to 2099 for some reason, anyway now the computer won't boot (I can't remember the exact error). Anyway the trouble is I can't access that computer now, and it has no monitor hooked up, is there anyway I can force a boot with just keyboard and without setting the correct date in the BIOS (no one with access to the computer could do this).
    Appreciate any help.

You can try to just press F1.
I have a similar issue with my home server, the battery on the motherboard is dead so when the pc is powered off for a while it will not remember the clock. When trying to boot the system in such a case it spits out an error where it offers to "ignore" the error if you press F1.
In my case I need to wait until my pc beeps before pressing F1, basically you need to get past the BIOS stage.
With a bit of luck it might work for you too.
Also I hope you have some ntp service running on your system to make sure the date gets set correctly on your system on bootup.
