Tecra M2 - hard shutdown on high CPU (turns off with no BSOD)

Have been experiencing consistent shutdowns when CPU runs at full for a little while.
- by "shutdowns" I mean complete power cut with no blue screen of death where all is lost and the computer has to be manually restarted.
- by "high CPU" I mean when the processor locks at full usage such as when you insert a column into a large Excel sheet with errors or when you are RARing a large number of files and you open a video from the network or when you run a virus scan and registry scan at the same time.
The problem has been occurring regularly for a couple of months and I can now manufacture an occurrence with high predictability. Using the hardware monitor suite 'Everest', it seems the problem happens when the CPU temperature sits at 99 for more than a minute or so.
It happen with some but never when running from batteries - during attempts to force the error, it will not shutdown if the power cable is pulled out just before the crash point.
In many instances of the problem, there seems to be a small error message which pops up only a fraction of a second before the computer dies.
Every forum and help reference I read would suggest the problem is hardware related and that the chip or motherboard is overheating and in need of replacement. While the laptop is nearly 18 months old, I bought a new "everything but the screen and HDD" early this year and was not prepared to accept the explanation without more testing.
Kantonix Linux works fine and the boot from CD seems to tax the processor as much as the same events that are killing it for me under XP.
A few weeks back, I installed the WinXP on a second HDD in the hotswappable bay and noted the installation seems to run the computer pretty hot and it did not die during the process. No problems were experienced for while but, a few days after moving the reinstalled HDD into the primary position and having reinstalled many many applications, the error started happening again.
Last night I caught it just fractions of a second before death, pulling the power and stopping the process and allowing me to see the error message (as referred above) properly:
- first message was from "TOSHIBA Power Saver" saying "A fatal errorn has occurred x06" (not sure on the last bit)
- second message was from "THotkey.exe" saying "Cannot load powrprof.dll"
- many hundreds of instances of the second message followed.
Due to error messages, I wasn't able to get a screen print.
Any solutions or even ideas about such would be very much appreciated!

Hello Markus, thank you for your suggestion and apologies for the lateness of this reply (thought I was supposed to receive email notification (?!?)).
I agree with your initial assessment "sounds like software related issue" and I would hate to think it is hardware - am die hard Toshiba man! (onto my 5th in as many years) .
Anywho, I have been through all the power saver options, as well as the CPU options under the Toshiba HWSetup: the system crashes under all situations if properly encouraged.
NB: Per my understanding, one shouldn't be able to crash a Pentium M, operating within the acceptable environmental conditions and I am working in a room between 16 & 20 degrees.
It is much more difficult to crash when it has been off for a while (ie. when it is cooler) and is more difficult to crash when on batteries as opposed to AC. Tried switching the RAM during the week and after mistakenly thinking it was all fixed, the problem resurfaced again. While I had the keyboard off, I had a look at the fan and there is a bit of dust on it but not very much. I have a Tecra M3 also, which is only half the age and, compared the fans, the M2 is about twice as dusty [if it were on your dinner table you'd wipe it down but there is not so much that you would imagine it to be a problem].
I mentioned previously that I was using Everest to monitor outputs from the temperature sensors and that crashes occur when the CPU temperature sits at 99 degrees for a while. Sometimes after turning it on after a crash, Everest is not able to display the CPU temperature. Am very reluctant to believe that the heat sensor on the chip has malfunctioned as all the internals were replaced in January (as was stolen and recovered somewhat worse for the adventure).
I have had to bite the bullet and move all my work to the Tecra M3 but am not very happy with this (the M3 I have is 1.86Ghz w/ 512MB vs 2.03Ghz w/ 1536MB RAM in the M2). As I'm sure you will appreciate, the cost of the M2 has now already been spent many times over in lost work time but one needs to know if they have an error related to software or if it is hardware, so as not to live in fear of a recurrance.
I will reinstall the M2 OS as soon as the work lag is caught up again (probably later this week) but really don't know what to try other than crash testing after each piece of software is reinistalled. Note, have already run the Toshiba Hardware Diagnosis console with no errors identified.
If you have any suggestions or thoughts on what I should try they are greatly appreciated!

  • My iphone4 turned off with plenty of battery

my iphone4 suddenly turned off with plenty of battery. and my on/off button does not work for me to reset it.

your battery meter is wrong. im running into the same issue without ryhme or reason. my phone was shutting off at 52% like clock work, then it moved to 58%, then finally after being off for half a hour i plugged it in one day and it actually showed 1%. problem fixed.
yet then a week or so later, it shut off on me at 35% and seems to be back to normal again.
the only way i've seemed to fix this is to use the charger that came with the phone or my ipad and have it plugged into the wall and let it say 100% for about a hour past it turning to 100. then when i unplugg it i do a shut down and restart, then i do a hard restart by holding in the 2  buttons until the phone starts to boot up again.
im on a verizon 4s 16g btw. this has been going on for about a month on mine, and just this past weekend my contacts started coming in as just numberes, no names, even if i text someone thru my contacts, the text back to me will come in as a new text under the number and not thier name. again, just randomly fixes it self after soem restarts and reproggraming by calling the verizon number.
lot of frustrations for a 4thgen phone from a company.

Hi My Iphone 4 keeps on turning off with no reason and there is no way of turning it on. any advice of how to get it working?

I guess but that was what I was on earlier but it wasn't of much help.
I need to chat with an apple person but don't know how if I don't have a phone accessible.
Is there a way to connect thru a laptop or something?

If the cover you bought is not a legitimate apple cover than you may be having the same issue I had.
The one I purchased has a top cover swivel, if you spin it around( meaning the top case cover)
The magnet will return to the correct spot and it will work again. It is only located at one end of the case.
    Hope this might help:)

  • My Iphone 4 keeps on turning off with no reason ???

Hi My Iphone 4 keeps on turning off with no reason and there is no way of turning it on. any advice of how to get it working? it's not run out of battry!!!!
it"s not drop into the water and not shoking or else????

If you have restored the phone as new and it still shuts off by itself, then take in the Apple store and have the people at the genius bar take a look at it.

  • IPhone turns off with half of battery

My phone has been acting weird for some time. When the phone's battery reaches half it will turn off and if I turn it on again it wont stay on. But what I noticed is that if I turn on airplane mode this random turning off wont happen. In airplane mode I even turn on wi-fi and I dont get any problems. It's just when the "phone" (or network or whatever) is turned on that it turns off with half of the battery. I already restored it and it didn't help.

If restoring your iPhone with iTunes has not resolved it and you are in the U.S., you can call AppleCare at (800) 694-7466, or make an appointment at an Apple store if there is one nearby.

  • Phone turns off with lots of battery left

My iPhone 4S has taken to turning off with as much as 30% power left. When I plug it in again and it comes back up, it will indicate the same power percentage. I have made it a habit of draining the battery at least once a month and then fully charging it (probably that happens more than once a month), so I feel like I've been properly maintaining the battery. I got this when the 4S came out, so it's as old as the 4S model is. Oddly, if I'm on the phone this does not happen. It will run down to 1%. Maybe that's coincedence, maybe not.
It's quite irritating - isn't this supposed to be the software/hardware that "just works"? - when you're doing something important and this happens. Today two armadillos appeared in our back yard and I was shooting some video of them. I got a low battery warning - I'm not sure if it was the 10% or 20% warning - but then right after clearing it, the phone shut down. I had some good video, but instead of using the remaining power to save the video, the video was just lost. I had never seen armadillos up close like that and was wanting that video to show my son and some other people, but now due to this problem that video is gone. Thanks a lot, Apple!

Sounds like there is a hardware problem - likely with the battery.
Make an appointment at an Apple Store if there is one nearby to confirm.

  • MSI z77A-G43 - After Shutdown - Fans will not turn off

Just installed a new MSI Z77A-G43 Motherboard for my husband since his old motherboard died. The one thing I've noticed though is that the fans will not turn off after I do a shutdown and I'd have to do a manual shut down instead. Any ideas what could be happening? Also it will randomly restart when not shutdown completely with the fans still on.
Here are the specs of the PC.
    MOBO: Z77A-G43
    Processor: Intel i5 - 2500k Quad Core
Video Card: Geforce - GT 610
    Ram: 8 Gigs
Hard Drive - 128gb ssd and 1.5 tb hdd
It's really barebones since I'm trying to just get it to run then get it back to normal working order with the next pay check
    EDIT!!!!::
Forgot OS is Window 7 Ultimate X64

If you are sure that your CPU is seated properly and that the PWM fan connector is seated correctly, then you may want to test with another known working PSU. I am not saying that your PSU is faulty, but before exhanging the board, I would definitely test that as well.
EDIT: Just a question, did you disconnect the power switch and the other front panel connectors of your case and started the PC by shorting the Power switch [pins 6 and 8 on JFP 1]with a screw driver tip ? The remote possibility exits that the cables may have been connected incorrectly or may have a short.

  • IPhone 4 turns off randomly, and doesn't start up unless its on the charger. Hard resetting it when its turned off doesn't turn it on either.

My iPhone 4 is running iOS 4.3.4 and it suddenly turns off randomly, usually when the batery is around 85% or so. When I try to turn it on the normal way or hard resetting it, it doesn't turn on. It only turns on when its connected to a charger, and the time and date resets to 7.30am, January 1st 1970. I have no idea why is this happening and how do I resolve this issue? I really don't want to go get it replaced as its too much of a hassle and Im leaving to another country in 2 days time..

It also starts charging at 70% or so when it turns on..

  • High CPU usage: Animation with background

I experience a high CPU usage when animating a shape over a background. If I disable the background or the animation, the CPU usage drops to almost zero. It seems like the combination of background shapes and an animated shape is very costly.
Is there a way to improve this performance? Can I indicate that the animated shape is always on top? Adding the smooth and cache tags did not improve the performance.
    Thanks in advance.

  • High CPU on CSS11503 , with one Flow

    Hi,
I've seen some high CPU Utilisation on 2 CSS.
I've figured out, that this Utilisation was created, by a mirroring Task from a database Server.
There was one TCP Connection between 2 Servers, whitch transfered about 60 Mbit/s.
But i saw a CPU-Utilisation from about 30-40% on my SCM which passed the Traffic.
That is some thing i do not understand, because the Forwading of this Flow shoud be done in the Flow-Processor, and the CPU Utilisation which is monitored, is the Session Processor.
The Protocol was TCP 1500, which is Used by Tivoli Storage Manager.
Anybody has some Idea, how this makes so much CPU Utilisation?
The Transfer was about 4 hours, and the CPU Utilisation also.
    Best regards
    Sven

    Hello Gilles,
may i try to show you the network design
    <-> <-> <-> css <->
So the traffic was hitting 2 css.
    One 11506 with 7.50 103
    One 11503 with 7.50.103
The traffic was one TCP Connection between Server1 and Server2 (TCP 1500).
There are no ACL and the traffic was not hitting a content rule.
The 11506 handels normal about 30 mbit/s out, and 10 mbit/s in. Average CPU is about 1% over a day.
The 11053 handles normaly about 5mit/ out and 1 mbit/s in. Average CPU is about 4% over a day.
CPU was about 30% higher on both css, during the replicarton (~3 hours)
I did not took any debug or show commands, because i saw it on my mrtg a day later.
Also, the high cpu was only seen on the SCM Module, the second Module (IOM) was normal.
    Best regads

  • My new mac book pro turns off with out my will

I bought a macbook pro17" 2,33 (3gb ram , 100SD@7200rpm)in 12th of june and since then it has a big problem!! It suddenly stops working and turns off without my will !! after that turns on and sometimes freezes with the white screen with apple logo!! I run hardware test and it found no. 4/mem4/40000000jgpa.:oxbd644c10 and 4/mem4/40000000jgpa.:1c7688cc !! It;s a big problem and I am going to get at least a new one..I can't take it this repaired .I paid about 3400 usd and i am extremely dissapointed!!

With the right approach, you may still be able to have your MacBook Pro designated as Dead On Arrival (DOA). Otherwise, consider doing some basic repair steps as listed below. From my previous post:
Repairing Permissions and/or Resetting the Power Management Unit (PMU) is known to resolve certain anomalies or conditions, and may help with your symptom. Neither process will compromise or harm anything with your Mac so it’s worth a shot.
    Repair Permissions:
    Go to: Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility
    Select: your Hard Drive
    Select: the First Aid tab
    Select: Repair Permissions
Resetting the Power Management Unit (PMU)
If the computer is on, turn it off.
Disconnect the AC Adapter and remove the computer's battery.
Press and hold down the power button for 5 seconds and then release the button.
Reconnect the battery and AC Adapter.
Press the Power button to restart the computer.
