Tecra S1 - Can't get sound to work after new installation

Hi,
I have a Tecra S1 and had to reformat. Didn't have orig driver CD.
All went well, installed drivers from Toshiba website. Soundmax driver for sound. But I am sure I can hear some reverb when playing music. VERY annoying.
I think that a sound environment preset must be turned on but I have looked EVERYWHERE and cannot find how to get into or adjust any sound environment presets.
HELP PLEASE!
Any help appreciated.
Pete

Nice job, buddy! :)
How did you fix this?

Hi, I'm new to arch/linux in general. Built a computer, and can't get sound to work. I ran Ubuntu for a short period of time, and sound worked there, so I'm assuming there's no hardware issue here.

  • After reinstall, can't get sound to work

I did a full reinstall of windows XP to a new hard dri've after my old one crashed, and I can't get the sound card to work. I am getting no sound whatsoever.
I have the Soundblaster? X-fi disc that came with my Dell computer, and I used that to install drivers. Device manager says the card and drivers are working properly. It also lists a Sigma Tel High Definition Audio Codec as a device, which is something that was on the driver disk supplied by Dell. I disabled that just in case the two are in conflict, but no luck. I would appreciate any advice. Thanks.

  • Can't get iphoto to work after tampering with library in Finder

I think I made a big mistake when I tampered with the iphoto library in Pictures in Finder.
Now I can't get iphoto to work. All the pictures are gone in iphoto, the spaces are there but they are blank.
When I open iphoto it goes into the mode (little spinning wheel appears) where I have to "force quit".
Any supggestions on what I can do? Thanks.

The list that shows is just data files and such.
You can burn the entire iPhoto Library folder.
You can burn each Year folder or any other variation.
This is my workflow. The reason I do it the way I describe is because I want a backup of just the photos and video clips I take so I can copy them to a partition of my external drive and burn them to disc. On the other partition I backup my entire users folder
When iPhoto 5 first came out I really think it was programmed to import the smaller 30 sec video clips that cameras were taking at the time. Since then, digital cameras, at least my Canon S2 can take clips as large as your memory card can hold. The first time I tried to download my images and movie clips with my new camera, iPhoto stalled at the movie clips. I wasn't going to take any chances messing up my iPhoto Library so I started using Image Capture to download all my images and Movie clips. I actually like doing it this way a lot better. My movie clips are downloaded into my Movies folder where I then put them in a dated folder.
My photos are downloaded into my Pictures folder, where I then put them in a dated folder. I import the dated folder into iPhoto. I also keep all dated folders from photo downloads in the Pictures folder till I get enough Movie folders and Photo folders to fill a DVD. I burn them and then delete them from the hard drive.
This way I have the photos in iPhoto and I also have just the photos backed up to DVD.
The Movies I keep on the hard drive in their dated folders until I use all the clips for my iMovie projects for the Year. I then make sure they are all burned to DVD, then I delete those from my hard drive.
Using Image Capture to download images and video clips:
Open up Image Capture which is found in the Applications folder.
When it is opened, go to Image Capture/Preferences
    Under the General button choose
Camera: When a camera is connected, open Image Capture.
The next time you connect your camera Image Capture will open.
In the window that opens you will see an Options button. Click on that button to set your options.
To find out more about Image Capture (it can do a lot more) Click on Help in the menu bar when Image Capture is open.
iPhoto: How to Change the "Open Automatically" Preference
If you find you can't change any of Image Captures preferences or can't access any drop down menus or they are greyed out, check to make sure Image Capture is loose in the Applications folder and not within a sub folder.
Here is info on backing up your photos:
    Backing up your iPhoto Library
    1. Burn the iPhoto Library folder in the Finder to a CD or DVD
This method will give you a burned iPhoto Library folder that can be copied back to your computer to replace a damaged library. You can also use this method to backup an old library when you want to create a new Library to use as your current library.
insert a blank CD into your internal or external CD-RW drive and copy the iPhoto library to the CD icon on your desktop. When you drag the CD icon to the Trash/Eject button in the Dock, you are given the option to burn the CD. Click Burn and the CD is created. To burn a DVD backup of your digital images, use a DVD and a SuperDrive-equipped Mac
The easiest way to burn an iPhoto Library folder in the Finder that is larger than 4.7 gig to fit on one DVD is to burn sections of the folder.
Drag the iPhoto Library folder to the desktop
Double click the folder to open it.
Drag each Year folder to the desktop.
You should be left with the iPhoto Library folder containing all the data files, and the Year folders.
Combine whatever year folders that amount closest to a DVD burn size on one DVD. Make sure that you have burned all the Year folders, then the iPhoto Library folder with all the data files.
If you ever need to use this backup, insert the DVDs into your computer and copy the folders to the desktop. Put all the Year folders back into the iPhoto Library folder. Then put the iPhoto Library folder back into the Pictures folder.
You can also check out applications for disc spanning:
    Disc-spanning software
    DropDMG
    Toast
    Dragon Burn 4
    BackityMac
Retrospect Express-comes with some external drives
    Retrospect for Macintosh Desktop Edition
    2. Copy the ENTIRE iPhoto Library to an external drive formated for a Mac. Do not use this as your only back up as the external can also go bad.
    3. Copy the ENTIRE iPhoto Library to your iPod in disk mode
4.Creating your own CDs and DVDs for viewing in iPhoto
This method is a great way to back up Albums of older photos or even your entire library if it is small enough to fit on a DVD. This method will give you a library that will mount within iPhoto in the source column to be viewed. To import any images from this library they need to be dragged into your library in the source column.
If you just want to backup the images in your library:
    1) Within iPhoto select the images, albums or rolls you want to backup. Go to Share>Export and export them to a newly created folder on the desktop. Follow the directions in the next link.
Creating a CD or DVD to be viewed in Windows or by a photo processing company
1.. If you backed up the entire iPhoto Library by burning within iPhoto or burning the folder in the Finder, make sure the burned copy is a good working copy before you delete the iPhoto Library folder in the Finder. You delete the iPhoto Library in the finder by dragging it to the trash when iPhoto is closed. When you next launch iPhoto it will create a new empty library for you to start anew.
    2. If you burned just the images, be aware that that is all you are archiving. No metadata will travel with the images such as comments, keywords, etc.
You can then delete those images within iPhoto by highlighting them and hitting the delete key, then empty iPhoto's trash. Do this often and in groups so iPhoto will not choke on too many images.

  • Can't get sound to work

    Hello,
haven't posted here in a long time, but now I decided to install arch on the new laptop I bought and I managed to get myself in a bit of trouble seeing that I never used a laptop before, let alone installed arch on it.
So my laptop model is Lenovo IdeaPad G510 ( CPU: Intel Core I5-4200m Haswell GPU: AMD Radeon HD 8570M).
I installed the propriety driver for the gpu but I use the intel integrated gpu for now because the X server doesn't start when using the amd driver, so that's one problem I jope you can help me with.
My other and more urgent problem is that I can't get the sound to work and creating a custom alsa conf just breaks alsa anyone has a clue as to how I can fix that?

it's the one built in with the CPU (that's why I posted the cpu make) and the alsa conf was like the one listed in the wiki where you specify one card to load before the other ( already delted the .conf so I can't post it sorry), my main problem is that I don't even know how to decide which of the devices show by aplay - l is my sound card, just never had to deal with sound before

Please check if all your plugins are up-to-date. To do this, go to the [http://mozilla.com/plugincheck Mozilla Plugin Check site].
Once you're there, the site will check if all your plugins have the latest versions.
If you see plugins in the list that have a yellow ''Update'' button or a red ''Update now'' button, please update these immediately.
To do so, please click each red or yellow button. Then you should see a site that allows you to download the latest version. Double-click the downloaded file to start the installation and follow the steps mentioned in the installation procedure.

    Hey
I use KDE4 with KMix. I have 5.1 Optical sound.
When I enter Audio Setup in KMix and test the "hw: 0,1" option I get playback.
But I haven't gottten any sound except that. Tried a video in MPlayer and Youtube video in Firefox.
I'm still abit new to Arch and linux.
    Also tried adding

Did what you said. PCM was the only one muted.
Oddly, I recently started having the opposite problem.  KDE startup and other systems sounds have stopped playing.  All my other sound (mplayer, flash, etc) work fine.  I can play the startup sound fine when opening it via dolphin.  It just doesn't play on startup, or any other system sound.  I know this happened after a recent update but I am not sure what or when caused it.  Startup sound isn't that important to me but fixing it is.  No luck so far.

  • Satellite Pro P200 - Can't get sound to work

Hi, since I've had this laptop I've not been able to get the sound to work. Have tried turning the volume off and on from the ESC key and the master volume control looks fine. Any ideas would be much appreciated.
    Many thanks!

    Hello Wayne
Please don't be mad on me but whole story is somehow strange. Why?
    >since I've had this laptop I've not been able to get the sound to work
This cannot be the truth. Every notebook is preinstalled with Toshiba recovery image and recovery image is designed for your notebook model. That means, with factory settings everything MUST work well.
    So questions are:
Do you still use factory settings or own preinstalled OS?
    Do you use Vista?
Can you hear sound using headset?
Please offer a little bit more info.

  • Can't get sound to work - no /dev/dsp !!!

I could really do with some help here, this is the first time I have tried to get sound working under linux. I am using a Abit VT6X4 board with on-board sound (VT82C686A) AC97 compliant chipset. I am using Kernel 2.6 which uses the config from the 2.6 package but with added SCSI support. I created the audio group as per FAQ but with ^snd as well as ^sound in the devfsd.conf. I installed all of the ALSA packages, I added snd_via82xx and snd-pcm-oss to /rc.conf, I added the following to /etc/modules.conf
    # ALSA portion
            alias char-major-116 snd
            alias snd-card-0 snd-via82xx
            # module options should go here
            # OSS/Free portion
            alias char-major-14 soundcore
            alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0
            # card #1
            alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
            alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
            alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss
            alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss
            alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss
When I login (as user or root) I get the dreaded no dev/dsp error.
Now if I ls -la in /dev, I see no dsp file/directory, however, if i touch /dev/dsp I get an access denied error (as root).
If I lsmod I get the following listed, so the modules appear to load ok.
    snd_pcm_oss 49412 0
    snd_mixer_oss 17056 1 snd_pcm_oss
    snd_via82xx 22688 0
    snd_pcm 91168 2 snd_pcm_oss,snd_via82xx
    snd_timer 22532 1 snd_pcm
    snd_ac97_codec 52900 1 snd_via82xx
    snd_page_alloc 9220 2 snd_via82xx,snd_pcm
    snd_mpu401_uart 6432 1 snd_via82xx
    snd_rawmidi 20768 1 snd_mpu401_uart
    snd_seq_device 6504 1 snd_rawmidi
    snd 46596 9 snd_pcm_oss,snd_mixer_oss,snd_via82xx,snd_pcm,snd_timer,snd_ac97_codec,snd_mpu401_uart,snd_rawmidi,snd_seq_device
    soundcore 7456 1 snd

Still having no luck here. I added snd-mixer-oss snd-seq-oss  to the /etc/rc.conf.  Farphel, you mentioned setting up the /etc/devfsd.conf to link /dev/dsp to the appropriate devfs entry, could you please give me an example of which lines do this.
I also inserted the following into /etc/modprobe.conf
(i take it modules.conf is now ignored with Kernel 2.6?).
    alias char-major-116* snd
    options snd cards_limit=1
    alias snd-card-0 snd-via82xx
    alias char-major-14* soundcore
    alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0
    alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
    alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
    alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss
    alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss
    alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss
    alias /dev/sound/dsp snd-pcm-oss
    alias /dev/sound/sequencer snd-seq-oss
    alias /dev/sound/mixer snd-mixer-oss
    install snd-via82xx /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install snd-via82xx && { /usr/sbin/alsactl restore; }

  • Can't get alarm to work on new ipod--never had trouble with old ipod

    Greetings all,
I just got a new Classic 120GB and it is great but I can't get the alarm clock to work...when I set a time for the alarm clock, it doesn't seem to remember this time but it instead defaults to an hour later than the current actual time...I tried several times to reset the alarm for a minute or two in the future so I could test it and see if it made any sound...I have reset the ipod and the normal time and date display is correct. I also can't get the beep sound to work, although I can hear the clicking when you scroll through things and so the internal speaker is clearly working. I used my old Ipod Photo for years as my alarm clock and I never had a problem with it...anyone have any idea how to fix this? I have the most recent ipod software, am using an older 17" G4 powerbook running 10.4.11. is there something obvious I am overlooking?

update: I can get an alarm message (you have an alarm) and a choice to dismiss or "snooze" but the internal speaker is still not kicking in and obviously a silent alarm is not ideal in this instance. When I try to hear the "beep" under tones, it doesn't make any sound but bounces me back to "sounds"...I can hear the clicking when scrolling and so the speaker seems activated but is muted somehow for the alarm. My old Ipod had a nice little alarm sound and I was hoping to use my new Ipod as an alarm clock as well...not a life or death thing, but I can't figure this out and I have read everything I could find. Help!

  • Can't get Nvidia to work in new kernel

    Hi,
Yes, I know, loads of people have problems getting this to work and it has been posted thousands of times...but yet I can't do it! I've been trying for days, googling, reading the wikis and forums, but it won't work for me at all! I guess I'm doing something really evidently wrong, but what?
I've compiled a low latency kernel to allow me to run some midi applications that my wife absolutely must have (and she won't accept my move to Arch until I get them to work ) Now, this part is OK - I've succeeded here no probs. But no amount of work will get that Nvidia card up and running. I've tried this using abs in the following way: I've copied /var/abs/extra/nvidia-96xx to /var/abs/local/nvidia-96xx/ In nvidia.install I've changed KERNEL_VERSION from 2.6.25-ARCH to 2.6.21-rt; I've done the same thing in PKGBUILD; and I've changed pkgname in PKGBUILD to nvidia-custom. Then I've run makepkg -i -c...nothing. It seemed to build the first time I tried, however on booting into the new kernel I got greeted by a blank screen (and pacman won't let me re-install the NVIDIA driver, either) However, the second time it refused (I think it was a permissions problem). So I tried the same manipulation, this time copying /var/abs/extra/nvidia-96xx to my home directory. Still nothing. What am I doing wrong? Sorry for being such an Arch noob!
    Thanks in advance!

OK, here is the exact error message when I try to do this manually:
    The CC version check failed.
The compiler used to compile the kernel (gcc 4.2) does not exactly match the current compiler (gcc 4.3). The Linux 2.6 kernel module rejects kernel modules built with a version of gcc that does not exaclt match that of the compiler used to build the running kernel.
If you know what you are doing and want to ignore the gcc version to check, select "No" to continue installation. Otherwise, select "yes" to abort installation, set the CC environment to the name of the compiler used to compile your kernel, and restart installation. Abort now?
Does the fact that I find nvidia.ko where it should be mean that this is the problem when I try to install Nvidia with abs? How do I set the CC environment like it says? I don't really understand this message.
