Tecra Z40 - HDD Upgrade

Hi,
i bought the Z40 with a 500 GB HDD. As a replacement i bought the following SSD:
Crucial CT512MX100SSD1 - 500 GB
Unfortunately i didn't get it to work. On the BIOS i can see that the system recognizes the ssd. But neither the restored system boots, nor windows 8.1 Retail installs. Are there any known compatibility issues?
The problems persist whether the bios setting is UEFI oder CSM.
I upgraded to the latest bios version to 3.7, but that didn't change the result.

"But I think if this will not work, you will need to reinstall the system once again".
Well, Paupau that's basically what I did.
The long story :
I tried to boot with the SSD in a enclosure plugged on an USB port : still got BSODs.
I really didn't want to have to reinstall and parametrize everything : Windows patches, office, various programs, copy my files... But as I was having [bad problems while putting the PC in sleep mode|http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=80456], I finally decided that a factory restore on the SSD might fix everything. Moreover, I had the original SSHD at hand in case it would not work.
So I booted, chose repair mode, thenToshiba's utility to do a factory restore.
Then the installation sequence rolled, with its string of reboots.
(By the way, one stage even failed, with a Windows crash, that would loop again and again after every reboot. So I finally chose to start in safe mode, and the installation routine could go on... weird.)
Next, I let Windows Update do its job, and installed my apps. Having had a bad experience with the quite old drivers that the Toshiba's Tempro utility advised me to install (see link above), I rather kept away from it, and used Intel's Driver Update Utility wich made me upgrade the wifi and bluetooth drivers. I made system resore points at every stage in case the sleep mode would cause BSODs again. Luckily, this didn't occur.
So here I am, with a much faster Tecra Z40, and no more sleep crashes. It was a chore, but I guess it was worth it.
Thanks for yout help, Paupau. :)

  • Tecra 9000 - HDD Upgrades

I have a Tecra 9000 and I want to upgrade the HDD, I would like to put in an 80GB drive. Does anyone know what i need to look for? What the specifications will need to be? and whether the HDD will fit into the Slim SelectBay adapter? Thanks in advance

OK, I was asked to spread the word about my experiences with upgrading my HDD and so here it is.
I went on to Overclockers.co.uk and ordered a Western Digital - 80GB 5400rpm 2.5" HDD. They werent sure if it would work properly or not and told me to ask the manufacturer!!
So I had already ordered the Slim Selectbay HDD Caddy from GetPartsOnline.com because I wanted to use the spare as an extra 30GB drive when I have completed the swap-over. I also then had to order a new HDD bracket because I wanted to have both HDDs in at the same time because I didnt want to boot from a CD. When everything came I put it all together and inserted the slim selectbay HDD in and it worked brilliantly. I then partioned the drive and formated it in Computer Management and when it had all finished I had a nice new 80GB Drive.
I am now going to create an image of the original drive on to the new one so that the 80GB one will be my main drive, as it is faster and quieter. I may even order another one to use in the Selectbay and sell the 30GB off.
    Thanks for everyones help

  • Tecra M10 - HDD upgrade

Does any one see any problems swapping out the 160GB HDD for a 1TB HDD i have already partitioned/formatted and installed XP PRO on the 1 TB HDD in my Satellite M-105 and it is working fine in there but would prefer it in the faster newer TECRA Laptop.
    Thanks

    Hi
I think this should not be a big problem since the SATA controller should handle the 1TB HDD.
You can test it using the HDD from the M105 the replacement is not difficult and both units M105 and M10 supports the same SATA HDD.

  • Tecra A7 - HDD Upgrade

    Hey,
Does anybody know what is the maximum capacity of an internal HDD; the tecra A7 can handle?
    Tecra A7-113
    Part Number : PTA71E-01Y01DG3

    Hi!
You can buy every 2.5 HDD that you want because your notebook has a SATA interface and there is no capacity limit as on older HDDs with IDE interface.
    Bye

  • Satellite L50-A-19N HDD upgrade question

    Hi,
I would like to upgrade the standard HGST HDD to a faster Seagate SSHD, and the problem is that in this model L50-A-19N there is no HDD cover, the whole laptop bottom must be removed like in this Link: [Video|http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IG0lW7t92bI]
My question is can I upgrade the Disk by Myself and if not what can I do to replace the Disk not losing the warranty. I read the manual for this model and there is nothing about HDD upgrades there.
    Regards.

Usually on most notebook models HDD is placed at the bottom and access to it is not complicated. As you can see on your notebook model it is not so easy and HDD exchange is not supported. With other words it should not be done by notebook owner.
Valid warranty is very important so please don't do anything on your own. HDD exchange in your case can be done by authorized service provider. If they do this warranty will not be cancelled.
Contact nearest Toshiba service provider and ask for help. Addresses and phone numbers you can find on http://www.toshiba.eu/innovation/generic/ASP_SUPPORT/
    Good luck

  • RAM & HDD upgrade on Satellite L30-115

    Hi,
I have a Toshiba L30 - 115, and I want to upgrade from its default to 1GB / 2GB RAM and 160GB / 250GB Hard Disk is that possible and if so can you provide me the item number of the modules and the capacity of each. I also would like to know whether the system would support any upgrade such as I wish to do so?

    Hello
Answer for RAM upgrade is very easy. This Satellite notebook can handle with 2 GB RAM max and compatible DDR2-400/533 1GB memory module has part number PA3411U-1M1G. you can use two 1GB modules and upgrade it to maximum.
About HDD upgrade is not easy to offer precise info because I know that Toshibas specification says that HDD can be upgraded up to 80 GB. Unfortunately I didnt find any public document about exact list of compatible HDDs but I believe you can upgrade it with 120 GB HDD.
Sorry buddy but I didnt find more info. Maybe someone with L30 will post here about HDD upgrade.

  • Lenovo G560 - Issue with won't boot and black screen after HDD upgrade

Lenovo G560 - Issue with won't boot and black screen after HDD upgrade.
What happen: My laptop was working fine, no blue screen issue, no funny business at all. I bought a new SSD Intel 120 GB and thought it would be a good idea to replace the HDD. I shutdown and disconnected the power adapter, waited a couple of minutes and removed the battery. I opened up the back case and replaced the HDD. And put all the screws back and put the battery back in.
Problem: The very first time I turned the power on, nothing happens besides a black screen. I pressed the dvd drive it works and opens up and closes. I waited for about 30 mins and still has blac screen. When I mean black screen, no bios menu, no logo, just a black screen with the fan sound on.
    I have tried these:
    1. Unplugged everything - battery, adapter, and pressed the power on button for about 60 seconds, nothing, the laptop turns on with the LED display on for both on and battery LED's. But nothing but black screen, no sound of windows loading just the fan and black screen.
    2. I tried putting back my old 2.5" and nothing but black screen.
    Thoughts and suggestions?

  • Re: Tecra Z40, Win 8.1 - Fingerprint reader malfunction

    PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:
My Tecra Z40 arrived with Win 8.1.
From the start I could not use the Fingerprint Utility.
When accessing the utility nothing would happen for a moment and then the error: 'Could not connect to the fingerprint reader' eventually popped up.
I could also not use the built in Win 8.1 fingerprint enrolment (Error: This device has not suitable biometric device).(PS mind that this built in feature is now metro-embedded and no biometric device settings are now present in the control panel in Win 8.1!)
The problem persisted despite the latest Fingerprint Utility (that comes with the drivers) were installed for Win 8.1. 64 bit directly from TOSHIBA website and despite that a biometric device was always present in the Task Manager ('this device works properly')!
    SOLUTION:
After literally weeks of searching (including getting help from the shop and from Toshiba service) I could finally solve the issue.
I uninstalled the driver and the fingerprint reader from the device manager (only then are the fingerprint reader drivers really removed).
Then I cleaned the registry (I used CC cleaner software) (otherwise installing again was failing for some reason).
Finally I installed an equivalent Fingerprint Utility and the driver for Tecra Z50 (fp-sw-20140605164020.zip) (which I expected to be use the exact same sensor)...and since, everything works fine.
I can now access the Fingerprint Utility and use the fingerprint log on in Windows.
    SUGGESTION FOR CORRECTIVE ACTION:
It seems that the driver offered on Toshiba support website (I believe for me it was the Polish one) for my exact machine (established by TOSHIBA-detector.exe) is incorrect.
To make things worse the driver does not communicate any useful information about its miss-fit in the task manager! If I had to recalculate into money the time I and a bunch of support people had spent on it, it really does make sense to improve that drivers list!
(PS: one of the regpatch files in the same online directory has a virus (yes A VIRUS) recognized in it by Antivir! Toshiba- you may wish to contact somebody responsible for that Polish support site!)
    REMAINING ISSUES:
No fingerprint log in is possible in either Internet Explorer nor Mozilla despite appropriate plugins were installed along with the Fingerprint Utility where the web password option was enabled. (no suggestion appears to appear to attach the fingerprint service to the sites requiring passwords- maybe your service gets blocked by popup blocking protection of browsers?).
I was actually much looking forward to this feature.
Please ensure that the plugins work correctly with the latest browsers.
    Greetings

Hey thanks for this interesting thread and detailed description.

  • Cannot install recovery image on my Equium after HDD upgrade

    Hi
I just installed a new hard drive to my Toshiba Equium laptop I contacted Toshiba who informed me I could fit up to 1TB I opted for half way with a 500GB.
After installing the drive I inserted recovery disk after a while it had loaded with the message operation completed successfully. Next message windows set up could not configure windows to run on this computers hard ware. Then windows could not complete the installation to install windows on this computer restart the installation...
At the end of the recovery process a message tells me to remove recovery disk and exit as soon as I exit laptop shuts down and doesnt re boot automatically. When restarted next message windows Vista is starting for the first time then the cycle starts again. I have tried to reload recovery several times as instructed but no good.
    Any help much appreciated

I dont know which notebook model do you have but if recovery image is Vista it must be pretty old model, maybe Equium A200.
To be honest I didn't make experiments with HDD upgrade on older models but I can imagine recovery image make a problems with HDDs with huge capacity.
Post please model name and which HDD have you inside now.
By the way: if possible try to install Win7 using Microsoft installation disc. Im sure it will works without any problem.

  • Tecra Z40 - 2 Windows 8.1 Pro DVDs - No DVD reader

    Hi.
I just got a nice Toshiba Tecra Z40. I want to install Widows 8.1 and according to the instructions I have to boot on the DVDs that were supplied.
There is one problem. *The laptop does not have an optical drive, so I can't boot from the DVD.*
I tried to access the DVD over the network (my other windows computer has an optical drive), but there is no usable program on the DVD.
    Please help

According notebook specification your Tecra was delivered with preinstalled Win7 and additional Win8.1 recovery DVDs.
Before you do anything create recovery USB stick using preinstalled Toshiba recovery media creator.
Win8.1 you can install using bootable Win8.1 recovery discs.
What you need is external USB optical disc drive. Such USB ODD is not expensive. Buy one and you can use it for Win8.1 installation but also in many other situations.
Two years ago I bought external USB BD ODD for 45 Euros. I also borrowed it to my friend with the same situation. He got Satellite U940 without optical disc drive.

  • Equium U400-145 HDD upgrade

    Hi,
I have a Toshiba Equium U400-145 and it currently has Windows 7 on it, and a 160GB hard disk. Is it possible to upgrade to a larger (1TB) hard disk, and if so can I use another external HDD (ie connected by USB) to take an image of the current one using Clonezilla, then do the hardware upgrade and restore the image to the new drive once its fitted? (Or would Windows 7 need to be reinstalled)?

Theoretically it should be possible. Clonezilla is not known to me but in the past many people have done similar thing using other applications like Acronis. In your case I think you must use Clonezilla Live.
U400 is god machine and runs perfectly with Windows 7. I don't know if you were able to install it perfectly including all necessary drivers, tools and utilities.
Back to HDD upgrade. I don't have this machine and cannot say for sure is everything will be OK but I think new HDD should be recognized properly with full 1TB capacity.

  • Tecra Z40-A stuck in Ironkey Preboot workspace loop

I have set up an Ironkey with Windows To Go and have managed to boot into it from several H.P machines and even 3-year old A.c.e.r.
However, when booting on my Tecra Z40-A, the Ironkey Preboot workspace loads up and shows the standard message that it is preparing to boot into Windows and will reboot.
Following that reboot, it boots again into the same Preboot workspace screen, same message, reboot, same workspace.
I'm assuming there is something in the BIOS which needs to be changed to get this working but have no idea what it could be.
    Ideas? Thoughts?

    Thanks for the reply,
Booting using USB isn't the issue as I was able to install an OS off a USB stick.
I posted this question on the IronKey forums too and someone there pointed me in the direction of why this might be happening and what to look for. Specifically he asked to check if the LED flashed red briefly in between reboots. I confirmed that it was which, he advised, was likely a BIOS setting causing the USB drive to lose power between restarts.
Looking through the BIOS, I changed the following setting which resolved this:
"USB Power in Off State" --> Needs to be ENABLED.

  • Tecra M6-EZ6611 HDD Upgrade

I've got a Tecra M6-EZ6611 with a 80GB original HDD drive. I'm running Win XP SP3 and the BIOS is the flash BIOS v3.60.
As I'm planning to replace the original HDD by a bigger/speedy one, I have a couple of questions for the Group:
    1) What would be the maximium drive capacity that the BIOS can handle?   2) Can someone recommend a good replacement drive with a bigger capacity and faster than 5400 rpm which will work with my M6?
Thanks for any help on this

I've just bought a 250GB WD Scorpio Blue and will install it during the weekend to see what happens.
Could you recommend any article covering the basics steps to recover the OS and the software after formatting the HDD?
    Thanks again.
    RTadeu
If you bought a retail boxed drive, it may come with software that you can use to 'clone' your old drive to the new one.  You'll need an external enclosure to connect the new drive to the notebook and clone it.  If you bought a 'bare' drive, check the WD website to see if the program is available to download.
You can also buy backup software like Acronis True Image that will let you make a restorable image and bootable CD so that you can restore your backup to the new hard drive.

  • Tecra S10 - problem upgrading to SSD Kingston

    Hi!
Tecra S10 - I am trying to upgrade HDD to Kingston SSD 128MD.
During fresh install of Windows 7-64 installer complains that there is not valid bootable device to create system partition, although the disk is recognized. BIOS is the latest, I have tried both IDE and AHCI configuration.
Is there a general compatibility problem with SSD disks and older notebooks?
I noticed similar problem with Satelite A200.
    Thanks

Thanks for suggestions, but to recapitulate:
    - Kingston SDD SNV125-S2/64GB, brand new, original (confirmed by Kingston guy)
    - On my home desktop works as expected
    - Kingston guy recommended installing Ubuntu 10. Installation passed without problems, manual partitioning (/root, /boot, swap). After first reboot Tecra did not recognized boot disk.
    - I put SDD in home desktop and Ubuntu boots without any problems.
    - When in USB/eSATA enclosure Ubuntu boots when connected via USB, but not recognized when SSD is connected via eSATA cable.
    - At last I install SSD in my old Satellite L100 (2006.). Boot Win7 install DVD, delete Ubuntu, Install Windows, reboot it works, it works everywhere, but in my Tecra!!!
Is there anything else to try?
    Thanks for your patience.

  • How to restore from time machine after HDD upgrade on macbook pro?

    Hi,
I have recently bought a WD 2.5 inch SATA 750GB 7200RPM 16GB HDD and plan to use it on my macbook pro 13 inch 2.4ghz early 2011. I will leave the pysical installation part to Apple Service. I have my Time Machine backup on an external hard disk. So, once I get the upgraded macbook, what are the steps I should follow for a complete Time Machine restore? (Including the formatting on the new HDD).
One more question; when I transfer my applications to the new HDD will Time Machine "remember" their activation codes and license information ?
    Thanks a lot.

    http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/14.html
This has all the instructions for a complete restore, including how to format the disk. Pondini's site probably has anything else you want to know too.
