Telephone solicitation from "Microsoft security contractors"I

Frequently receive phone calls from those claiming to be Microsoft contractors.  They say "you're having problems with your computer."  I ask how they know.
Please clarify whether there really are "Microsoft Contractors" who make unsolicited phone calls to Windows users.

Microsoft and Microsoft contractors never make unsolicited phone calls to consumers. In fact, they never send unsolicited email messages. This is a scam to either steal your identity or install malicious software on your computer.

  • Applying recommend settings from "microsoft security compliance manager 3.0.60.0" to a standalone Server using LocalGPO.wsf on Server 2012 R2

    Hello
Can someone please help me with the following question.
I have a standalone Server and need to apply settings from SCM, I can see how to do this following the instructions in the following article
    http://windowsitpro.com/security/q-how-can-i-apply-security-baseline-i-defined-through-microsoft-security-compliance-manager
The problem is  the LocalGPO.wsf that ships with the above version of SCM does not run on Server 2012 R2 (only Server 2012)
    my question is,
is there a later version of LocalGPO.wsf I can use that works on Server 2012 R2 ?
    Thanks

  • I've received a gmail email from Microsoft account team saying We detected something unusual about a recent sign-in to the Microsoft account ******* To help keep you safe, we required an extra security challenge. I then asks to follow link and sign in

Please help because since I've received an email from Microsoft warning they have detected suspicious activity on our Microsoft email account (wasn't even aware my gmail account had anything to do with Microsoft) I have been receiving other odd emails which consist of one or two huge lines of text in bright blue, usually to do with debt or one the Grand National and betting. These emails do no appear to be addressed to me but I'm still receiving them. I have put them all into the Junk Folder (by the way is that the same as reporting them as spam on and iPhone or iPad?)
I'm still concerned about this Microsoft email though. It advises that we need to give some extra security information for them to be able to protect us in future (which initially looked to me as if it may be a phishing email). If I follow the link it takes me to a page that looks fairly official and could well be Microsoft, I then asks me to sign in using username and password.
To be honest Im not sure I even have a Microsoft username or password and I'm concerned even if I did know it, whether I should be filling in that information or not? Also what's likely to happen once I've signed in? I'm concerned that once I had entered their site they would just be phishing for more information?
Just in case there is any relevance around about the time of receiving this email I and performed two fairly unusual actions.
    1.  I contacted an American company to ask if they would sell something to the UK.
    2.  I started using Keychain on my iPhone and iPad and signed in to all the shops and sites I use with my usual password and changed them all the keychain suggested passwords.
Typical trying to make myself safer and yet I'm now concerned I could be in danger.
Please can someone advise me on what I should do about this email, i,e, is it a phishing mail and should I Junk it or should I answer it and try and sign in and if I should answer it how do I know what my Microsoft sign in and password is?
Also can someone tell me how I report spam on my iPhone and iPad in a gmail account?
Sorry I've rattled on so much and I'm asking so many questions but they are all connected.

It doesn't.  Gmail is owned by Google.

  • The event logging service encountered an error while processing an incoming event published from Microsoft-Windows-Security-Auditing.

Last night, some of our systems installed updates released on 11/13/2014.
    KB3021674
    KB2901983
    KB3023266
    KB3014029
    KB3022777
    KB3020388
    KB890830
Today, all of the servers running Windows Server 2008 R2 started logging the following error in the Security log over and over:
    Log Name:      Security
    Source:        Microsoft-Windows-Eventlog
    Date:          1/15/2015 11:12:39 AM
    Event ID:      1108
    Task Category: Event processing
    Level:         Error
    Keywords:      Audit Success
    User:          N/A
    Description:
The event logging service encountered an error while processing an incoming event published from Microsoft-Windows-Security-Auditing.
Servers running Windows Server 2008 that also installed the updates are not experiencing the problem.  It looks like one of the updates may have introduced this problem with Server 2008 R2.

...Did you for sure confirm that:
    https://technet.microsoft.com/library/security/MS15-001
    is the cause?
I did.  I had a VM that was not experiencing the problem.  I took a snapshot and tested the patches one by one.  Installing only KB3023266 immediately caused the issue to occur (after reboot).  A similar process was used to confirm that
    installing KB2675611 resolved the problem.
Note that I found the installation of KB2675611 is usually quick, but it took several hours hours to install on some of our systems.  We had installed this patch a few months ago on a couple of servers and it was always quick to install.  But,
it seems like installing it on a symptomatic system can cause it to take a long time.

  • Security mails from Microsoft cant be delivered to Exchange 2010

    Hi there,
I have strange issue with delivering e-mails from Microsoft account team to my Exchange 2010 users.
That is single Exchange 2010 server scenario with Microsoft antispam features installed.
There is one setting that is affecting behavior of that: Sender-ID filtering. If it is configured as reject messages, the authentication e-mails are rejected with error:
    550 5.7.1
Missing purported responsible address,MissingPRA,No valid PRA
I was doing some research around the Sender-ID filter and found this:https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa997242(v=exchg.141).aspx pointing
    to this:
    http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc4407.txt
    (see chapter 2, points 5 and 6)
And Im thinking that the From: header is too long for the filter having 133 characters...
    From: =?windows-1250?Q?T=FDm,=20kter=FD=20se=20star=E1=20o=20=FA=E8ty=20Microsoft?= <[email protected]>
    See https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc2822 chapter 2.1.1
And if from header is not read properly, there is no other chance to define PRA.
Im attaching the header with some privacy related edits (*)
And also connection to my previos post:

Do anyone knows the limits of header lines in the Exchange 2010 Antispam Filters?

I have tested it deeply and strange thing gets even stranger:
If I send entire email with telnet the difference between error and accepting message by server is comma in From: header. so:
Message is not accepted with that line:
    From: =?windows-1250?Q?T=FDm,=20kter=FD=20se=20star=E1=20o=20=FA=E8ty=20Microsoft?= <[email protected]>
Message is accepted if I delete a comma:

  • Why does updating virus definitions on microsoft security essentials make my macbook go to sleep and hard to wake it up from its sleep state?

Why does updating virus definitions on microsoft security essentials make my macbook go to sleep and hard to wake it up from its sleep state? does this happen to anyone else? its really bugging me.

Just  you probably, having used it for years since its beta days.
don't run more than one malware suite/programs. it is possible to use some as long as they aren't running.
    I'd look elsewhere for why.

  • Microsoft Security Essentials not taking definition updates from WSUS Server.

    Hi Experts,
I have a WSUS server installed on network on which MSE definition updates are installed, but the MSE on the client computer is not getting updates from it.
When I click the update button it gives me error "Virus and spyware definitions couldn't be updated".
The error code i am getting is 0x80244018. The definition updates couldn't be installed please try again later.
I also have TMG on my network as a default gateway, I want to update MSE from WSUS not from microsoft update.
Do I have to change rules....??? or any suggesstions that how MSE can be automatically updated from WSUS, the WSUS setting is saved into a GROUP Policy and applied....
    Please advice......

The error code i am getting is 0x80244018.
This is an HTTP 403 error, which is generally (but not always) indicative of a proxy server interfering with the download. Assuming this is happening when the client is trying to get Definition Updates from Microsoft during the daily scan, this error will
likely go away once you properly set up WSUS to provide the definition updates.
I want to update MSE from WSUS not from microsoft update.
To do this, you need the following:
The Definition Updates classification must be configured for synchronization.
An Automatic Approval rule that approves the Definition Updates classification for the appropriate target group(s) must be configured and enabled.
The policy setting Allow Automatic Updates immediate installation must be ENABLED.
Your WSUS server should be configured to synchronize multiple times per day (at least 2).
Your clients should be configured with a shorter Detection Frequency (8 hours is ideal).
With the above configured, the clients will check the WSUS server 3x-4x per day, find the latest available Definition Update, download it and install it immediately.
Note, however, that if the client fails to download and install Definition Updates, MSE will continue to do a check, and attempt to update the Definition Updates during the daily scan. If your TMG blocks the client's Internet access, then they
will continue to log HTTP 403 errors when this definition update attempt is executed. (This is why you configure multiple syncs and scans per day -- so the client *never* has to go to Microsoft to get the current definition updates.)

  • Creating PDF Files from Microsoft Office | Learn Acrobat X | Adobe TV

This video explains how to create PDF files from Microsoft Office products including Office 2010 in Acrobat X Std. or Pro.
    http://adobe.ly/w5Vsg9

I have used Print to PDF from the File Menu in Office many times. Normally it works fine, but for whatever reason, in MS Excel 2010, I have one file that will not Print.
It allows me to select the Adobe Printer and save location, and when I hit "Print" it shows a dialog box for about 1/2 a second, but no progress meter, and the file isn't created. All other files work fine except this one - there aren't any security measures or special attributes in the file, it just doesn't physically create the PDF.
Any thoughts on how to resolve? I have tried rebooting both Excel as well as the Laptop several times.

  • Microsoft security patch  KB834707 side effects in NW. SAP Note 785308

I figured we should make a thread with information known about this problem.
Since the problem comes in the javascripts, I would belive the problem is on the client-side, not server side.
Does anyone know exactly what the problem is (what has Microsoft changed) ?
Please contribute with information you get from OSS's.
I'll update this first post with all available information
    Information:
    15.11: Microsoft
have to provide a solution to this problem and that it could take
some time. The problem lies on the
Microsoft side so we must wait for them before a solution can be
    provided.
    - Development has found that by adding the site to the intranet zones of
the client browser, the problem is solved, some experience of late has
shown that in some cases you have to add the full machine name to the
intranet sites and not just in the form of *.somedomain.com.
Microsoft and SAP are currently working on the problem and a proper and
long term solution is expected shortly. However no exact date has been
    specified.
    - It is possible that the problems are caused by event handlers pointing directly to a DOM function:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/887741
    - I've noticed that we don't have a problem on a portal running EP 6 SP2 P3 Hf4 , after installing the hotfix on the client side. Maybe the problem is on the server side or maybe because it is an intranet portal only(however, I had no problems when setting it to be in the internet security zone). Awaiting confirmation from SAP

    > Does anyone know exactly what the problem is (what has Microsoft changed) ?
    a) Go to <http://www.ciac.org/ciac/bulletins/p-006.shtml> and search for the "CAN-" links. Each component has a one paragraph description.
    b) According to <http://patch-info.de/IE/2004/10/12/20-35-16.html> it contains:
    mshtml.dll (6,0,2800,1476 - 29,09,2004)
    urlmon.dll (6,0,2800,1474 - 23,09,2004)
    shdocvw.dll (6,0,2800,1584 - 27,08,2004)
    wininet.dll (6,0,2800,1468 - 23,08,2004)
    browseui.dll (6,0,2800,1584 - 22,08,2004)
    shlwapi.dll (6,0,2800,1584 - 20,08,2004)
    c) Some of the things that could be breaking are DOM references and DHTML, which are advanced features that not every application uses.
    From <http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS04-038.mspx>:
"Caveats: Microsoft Knowledge Base Article 834707 <http://support.microsoft.com/?id=834707> documents the currently known issues that customers may experience when they install this security update. The article also documents recommended solutions for these issues."
Among other issues, that page says [<b>emphasis</b> added]:
    - After you install the MS04-038 security updates for Internet Explorer, some dynamic HTML (DHTML) <b>drag-and-drop operations are blocked</b> by Internet Explorer.
    - Security update 834707 includes a change to the way that Internet Explorer handles function pointers. This change in functionality occurs when an event handler points directly to a Document Object Model (DOM) function [...] Change in Internet Explorer function pointer behavior <b>causes code to not be executed</b> when an event handler is set to directly reference a DOM function after installing MS04-038 security updates.
BTW, Note 785308 has been updated with a workaround.
    Regards,
    Sean

Only *Security Updates* have MSRC Security Bulletin numbers, but not all security updates have MSRC Security Bulletins associated with them. In fact, there are a large number of security updates that are not associated with security bulletins. -242- of 'em
    on my WSUS server.
Otherwise, the MSRC Number field will always be blank on non-security updates, and may be blank on security updates.

  • Got a call from someone saying they were from Microsoft but it seemed fishy

Today I got a call from someone with a strong Indian accent claiming they were from microsoft and that my computer was in critical condition. I can't recall microsoft ever calling people personally about this so it automatically seemed like a scam. I told
him I didn't believe it fairly quickly and hung up. So I wanted to know in case there really is something wrong, do microsoft people ever call customers to tell them of errors? Is this just a scam and in which case is there a way for me to report these people?

Its a scam.  A well known and long running one.  Microsoft will never ask for personal details (they already have them) and
will never cold call you.  Nor do they send out anti virus messages
Microsoft does not do that nor do they have partners who do that
