Tell me again why the point system has any value?

Many participants seem to care only about receiving answers by spreading and urging their question as much as possible without providing any value to the community. These people typically do not even care to give feedback and thereby disrespect anyone who tries to help them in the end. A rather twisted view IMO. Just because someone does not offer you points, or does not provide the type of feedback you would like to your suggestion, does not mean "disrespect". Come on!
It seems to me that there is this politically correct view that technical forums dealing with technical problems and technical solutions, should be all facebook community like, where we are all friends, slapping one another on the back, telling one another how good and awesome they are. +<shudder>+
If you want warm fuzzies and political correctness and slaps on the back, I suggest joining Facebook to "connect and share with the people in your life".Perhaps that is what you have been reading between the lines, but that is not what I wrote. To respond and to acknowledge help is a matter of good manners and courtesy in any social environment. Forum participants who do not give feedback and leave their posts orphaned are disrespectful. That's is my opinion.
About your last statement… I'm not a fan of Facebook and have my account deactivated. I prefer not to drag my life or that of my friends to the public screen. I do not trust Facebook or any other business or government to take care of personal data in everyones best interest. However, the warm fuzzies and political correctness and slaps on the back as you describe seems to happen everywhere, even here.

  • [locked] Another reason the points system is all JIVED UP!!!

Not only do the nubes asking the questions not really know if an answer is correct or not. But many people don't bother to list the question as answered or if they do they just mark the question as answered without handing out points. This point system is not well thought out.

    Buko...
That's the whole point isn't it? The points system has no bearing on reality. Points i gained in Dreamweaver have no validity in say After Effects... yet the poor poster in AE will think i'm an AE expert too. And then, as you point out, the whole awarding of points is all belly up. It's really a joke!
Which is why i don't understand why guys freak when we joke about it... the moment you see 'points' in the topic, don't, as Ansury said, read the thread! There's nothing serious that can be said about this and the 'correct answer' crap except remove them both. Except, of course, for those who love to see the points under their name, the little red blobs increasing and the smug feel of seeing that mdeallion thingy next to their name.

  • Satellite P500-12D - A problem with the cooling system has been detected

    hi there everyone,
I have bought a Satellite P500-12D which was a retail return. When I start it up it runs a couple of mins and then this comes up on the screen:
Warning: A problem with the cooling system has been detected. please turn off the computer immediately and return it for service.
In the toshiba health monitor the cpu is under 50% temp and if it goes much above that the cooling fan comes on and lowers it back down and the fan stops again, I have noticed that only the r/h fan runs to cool the cpu, should both them come on together? Could it be a software problem?
Tthe unit is new without even the plastic off the screen surround or webcam. Any help or even point me in the right direction would be very appreciated, gary

The fact that the pc is a retail return would indicate that there was a fault at day one and the customer returned it. At some point the retailer turned it on and since it appeared to work re-sold it.
This is the cooling/fan report from a P500 produced by pc wizard 2010 - free from cpuid.com. Perhaps a comparison against the faulty laptop will point to the problem

  • A problem with the cooling system has been detected

I bought a new computer not to long ago, I've had it for almost a month now. It runs fine, and I've had no problems until not too long ago. I was playing a game, and I got a random error message: "A problem with the cooling system has been detected. Please turn off the computer immdiately, and return it for service." I don't understand how or why this came up, and I don't have any money to return it for any type of repairs. After I got this message, I left my computer off for about an hour. All seems well so far. Any suggestions?

    What laptop do you have?

    As Niel pointed out, yes.  The disk probably will look like the MBP disk (4) in this screenshot;

  • The wireless system has detected a possible intrusion attack by signature..

We are getting the following "critical" alert with the following:
    Description
NULL Probe Response - Zero length SSID element
    Message
{controller} IDS 'NULL probe resp 1' Signature attack detected on AP 'AP Name' protocol '802.11b/g' on Controller 'x.x.x.x'. The Signature description is 'NULL Probe Response - Zero length SSID element', with precedence '2'. The attacker's mac address is 'xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx', channel number is '6', and the number of detections is '1'.
    Help
The wireless system has detected a possible intrusion attack by signature detection for a specific attacker. Immediate attention is required.
I'm trying to find more information on this and am wondering if this is a false/positive.
    Thanks for help in advance.

I would point more towards a false positive alert here.
NULL Probe Response - Zero length SSID element:
Some frames are permitted to carry a null (zero length) SSID, called a broadcast SSID. For example, a station can send a probe request that carries a broadcast SSID; the AP must return its actual SSID in the probe response. Some APs can be configured to send a zero-length broadcast SSID in beacon frames instead of sending their actual SSID. However, it is not possible to keep an SSID value secret, because the actual SSID (ESS name) is carried in several frames.
As far as how to modify the IDS sensor in the WLC:

  • Is the points system too restrictive?

When I first joined these forums, the points system was quite different, so that the transition from level three to four took a long time, but was possible. Since then giving and receiving points has tightened up so much that I now think that it is all but impossible to get from level two to level three in a reasonable time.
I would like to know how many people have made the level three to four transition since the current point regime started? and of those, how many were already close to the transition at the changeover?
Is the current scheme too restrictive? Was it cynically designed to be restrictive to reduce the number of people getting to level four?

Okay. There may still be some overlap between this list and yours.

  • Is the point system broken?

I have always been slightly amused by the point system and the little crosses since I came back to the forums after a few years away.
I imagine that knowing that someone has answered a lot of questions that have been marked as Correct or Helpful could be a handy indicator to someone new to the forums. Like Bill Hunt for example. It isn't the points as much as the percentage of points as a ratio to the number of posts. It indicates that people have often marked his answers as useful.
Well, the other day I noticed that I had reached 996 points and I was about to get a third marker. Try as I might to be nonchalant about it, since the points are not all that important, it still kind of threw me off when I got stalled at 996. I have had two correct answers lately and yet my points no longer increment.
So, is the system broken? Are my points being held up for review for some reason? Or, is there some other reason? I guess I am just curious about it. I keep telling myself it doesn't matter. Yet, what can I say? Pride is just one of those vices that is hard to shake. Throw a little vanity in there and ....

It is like riding a roller coaster. Wheeeeee!  Back up to 1101 points!!!!
I can only imagine how this would feel if I was one of those people who are really mad at Adobe right now over the subscription issue instead of being pleased as punch about being let back into the game so inexpensively. Yikes! This would be like rubbing salt in the wound instead of being funny.

  • I've updated my Macbook Pro and my iMac with Maverick, updating the various apps. On my Macbook, everything functions perfectly. On my iMac, I get the Your System has Run out of Application Memory, and it's based our Mail, the only app not updated. Ideas?

    Maverick and Your System message
I've updated my Macbook Pro and my iMac with Maverick, updating the various apps (Pages, Aperture, iPhoto, Numbers & iMovie, too) in the process.
On my Macbook, everything functions perfectly. On my iMac, I get the Your System has Run out of Application Memory message. But it's not Calendar, it's Mail that not only won't open, but when it does now, it takes the entire system out with it.
I open Safari, and it works. I open Firefox, and it works and Safari still works. I open Calendar and it works, Safari and Firefox continue to work. I open Reminders, and everything still works.
I open Aperture, and it opens Finder instead, showing the 3.5 update that was installed two days ago (and Aperture has functioned), but doesn't seem to update the app; after about 20 seconds the update disappears and I can now open Aperture and it shows I'm now opening the updated Aperture, which it didn't show before.
I click on Mail, and the cursor spins for ten minutes. The mail window finally opens, but the cursor spins and does not connect to upload new mail, and I finally Force Quit Mail. Since the Maverick update, even though Mail was not updated (and maybe because Mail was not updated), I have been able to receive emails twice, and then the program crashed.
Besides the Aperture app, Pages didn't fully update on the iMac, and I had to remove the old Pages icon from the dock after the new program loaded up from Applications.
    Any ideas?

    Hi there,
I found that Time Machine in Mavericks will sort it all out for you. You shouldn't need to buy another backup drive, unless you have insufficient space left and can't afford to delete whats on there. It should just work fine.

  • Connecting to the LOB system has failed. A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Serve

    Hi!
I'm using consume adapter service> sqlbinding >  to connect to sql database in order to generate sql schemas.
    I'm getting below error:
Connecting to the LOB system has failed.
A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider:

    Hi,
As suggested earlier this seems to be a DTC related issue. It can only occur if the DTC settings are not proper or if firewalls don't allow the default ports to communicate.
Check DTC settings on both SQL and BizTalk Box and also check if MSDTC service is up and running.
    Go to Start
    à Run
à (type in) Dcomcnfg. You should be inside Component Services MMC.
    Expand Component Services
    à Computers
    à My Computer (right click)
    à Properties
    à MSDTC tab
    à Security Configuration button.
Select the checkboxes as following :
Check the below article from Microsoft Support Team, they have listed all the errors which may come during setting up a new system. They also have your MSDTC error listed.
Resolving the issues you may face during BizTalk Runtime Configuration

I was wondering why the iPhone 5 has the option for a battery percentage and the iPod touch 5g doesn't? I mean... they are almost both the same thing... just the iPod does not have the phone.

One likely reason is the % battery is not that accurate because of the smaller battery capacity in the iPod compared to iPhone and iPad. Users why use a % battery app post that the % reading changes a lot.
