Tell us about your first computer

Hi Guys
I noticed that djh22 posted some interesting info in the Introduce Yourself thread about his computing history and I thought it was worth starting a new thread on this topic!
What was the first computer you used?  Does anyone remember the Dragon 32 or BBC micro that Del mentions?
My first experience of computers was a Commodore 64  - which I used at that time for playing basic games!  Was great fun though…   I also remember the joys of the games Frogger and Chuckie Egg and how advanced they seemed!
Anyway... Del’s info is more interesting than mine so I have copied it here… would be great to hear about your early computers/games.
“I started my computing career on a Dragon 32 and then a BBC micro (anyone remember them ?) way back in the days when you had to type in Dos commands ,there was no graphic interface and any work was saved to a cassette tape machine added on as a periferal device, the next step was an Amiga 600, Wow ! it had a workbench, Gui and a built in floppy disk drive , I was in heaven, my first REAL computer was a Vtec which had Win'95 and a massive 400 Mb hard drive and internet access via a built in Modem,I had Dial up with BT Internet a whole new world opened up.
It's strange but even Dial up seemed fast back then.”
Cheers

Hi,
What can we consider as a first computer, because many devices from games systems to standard desktops/laptops are all computers, right?
Anyhow, I started off with an Atari and had several games connected to a black and white TV which you had to manually tune in - even for all other channels.
The next was a Nintendo and my real computer after that was a BBC Basic Model B, i had a 3 1/2 floppy drive (lucky for some as some where stuck on the larger 5 1/2) and proper colour monitor.
I then grew up and got from a jumble sale a IBM XT PC which had a 20MB, Yes 20 MegaByte hard drive which never worked and a 5 1/2 floppy drive running on dos 3 - i found prince of persia on the machine to be fantastic!
I then saved up for a Zenith 486 machine second hand for £100 and with 160MB Hard Drive, 2MB Ram and Windows 3.1, it ran like a dream, i loved it.  Then i went to the scrap yard and picked up a Pentium 1 with Windows 95 WOW so excited.
I had several laptops with windows 3.1 and 95 and PC's made from barebones and when i started my role in IT i broght a Dell 8300 with a flat screen monitor and Windows XP, this was about 7 years ago and the machine still works today, however i broke the flat screen when my pin board fell on it, funny as the tft screen survied 2 house moves!
Inow have a vaio laptop and have both Vista and 7 on the machine and loving it!

hi how to express "Tell me about your self"?

    Hi,
This Q raises alomost at evrytime when interviewer wants to begin conversation with you, and it is all about he/she wants to know moslty about your career in a short note.
so when ever you start saying about yourself, start on your early days like eductiion background, any educational achivements, and then jump into how actually started working and your work related commitments, and end with current work and just say few words about your current client and their business and finish with good thoughts about your current work.
this is how i feel is a good presentation about yourself, and make sure it should be simple and short- KISS(Keep It Simple and Short).
    Good Luck

  • How did you feel about your first mac?

As an early christmas present I received a 13 inch macbook air, 2GB RAM and 1.86GHz dual core cpu.
I am mostly used to PC laptops running linux or often I put solaris on them. I study Computer Science and have Asperger's Syndrome.
I got my mac as windows had too much bloatware and Linux was too unstable on my 64-bit hardware (needed 6 GiB RAM for large compilations). I was going to use the macbook air to take notes and some minor work between classes such as writing assembly subroutines, C and java. The primary use of this system was going to be as a personal assistant to have my calendar and files etc.
The system is so powerful with a full 12 hours battery life when working on the localhost that it can out-do a 2.4GHz dual core with 6 GiB RAM PC running any OS. This system is now used for all my work due to it's capabilities and portability. After only one week with a mac I dont know how I lived without one, and my carer says it has made me show immense improvements day-to-day. I am now tempted to learn Objective-C as well as how to use Cocoa from Python to be more efficient, especially after seeing the perfection in this system.
How did you feel when you got your first mac?

A related question might be, what did you think about the introduction of the IBM PC?
I had been designing digital systems and working with computers for a few years before the PC's introduction in 1981. The mainstay systems were 8 bit Z80 or 8085 machines running at 4 or 6 MHz. They ran CP/M with its command line interface. Although the maximum memory these systems could use was 64 MB, being a single user, single-task operating sytem, even the most resource-hungry programs (word processors for instance) ran very fast. CP/M itself needed only a few K.
Dual floppy disk systems were common, 180 KB per disk unless you had double sided floppies - 360 K. The A drive booted the operating system, after which you could insert a program disk. The B drive held your data. I had one machine with a whopping 5 MB hard disk - the C drive. I treated it with special reverence.
When rumors began about IBM producing its version of a desktop PC, many people including myself had grand expectations. Clearly Big Blue would emerge as the leader in desktop computers, since they had the resources to dictate what the standard would be. Everyone knew the others would be left in the dust. What kind of processor would it use? How much memory? Would it have a slimmed down version of the multiuser, multitasking operating system used in its System/34 minicomputer? Or would it resemble something that DEC used in its PDP-11?
Well, when the IBM PC came out in 1981, needless to say it was an enormous disappointment. It wasn't much better than anything else I had already been using for three or four years already, except the PC was much, much more expensive. No hard disk unless you wanted to buy an upgraded power supply (more $$$) and then all they offered was 10 MB. Forget about multiple users or multitasking. It didn't even have the equivalent of CP/M's PIP. The whole thing seemed... intentionally crippled. This was supposed to be the future of computing? In my opinion it was a major step backward. The XT that followed it offered only minimal improvements. I rejected the IBM PC as not cost effective and kept using my CP/M dinosaurs.
So, when Apple introduced the Macintosh a couple years later I finally saw, in the flesh, what I thought a computer ought to be. A totally bit mapped display, a robust 16/32 bit processor, real sound capability (everything before it could only "beep") and a true graphical UI. You could name a file anything you want, no 8x3 idiocy. +To this day+ Windows carries remnants of 8x3 filenames!
The Macintosh blew away the PC, if not in performance, in its potential. Unlike the "crippled" PC the Mac seemed limitless. This was cool. The Mac wasn't without limitations though - there was no good way to install a hard disk for instance - but for some reason I considered those limitations trivial and believed they would be overcome in the near future. I waited for the first "upgrade" - the "Fat Mac" with a whopping 512K memory. Half a megabyte!
I used that computer for several years, until the SE/30 came out, which I kept in service for about ten years. I ultimately expanded its memory to 32 MB while PC users were struggling with extended memory or expanded memory - you had to know which was which - to get beyond the PC's stupid 640K barrier. My 30 MB HD eventually grew small, but that was easily remedied with an external SCSI drive. Although the computer did everything I ever expected it to do, the Internet eventually made it functionally obsolete. It could run a browser (forget which one) but the black and white limitation made it marginally useful.
I eventually replaced it with an iMac, which echoed the original Mac's introduction with its forward-thinking design. The iMac opened up a new world in much the same way the original Macintosh did in 1984.
    All my Macs still work.

That pretty much sums it up.
In retrospect, I believe that IBM and its marriage of convenience with Microsoft delayed the evolution of desktop computing a decade or more. I cringe whenever I think of the aggregate productivity loss and utter frustration shared by millions of PC / Windows devotees all these years.

  • Tell me about your 10.4.6 problems

I'm really trying to be helpful here, please try to keep that in mind.
I installed 10.4.6 and AFP mounted server volumes don't act the same anymore. Applications don't function the same anymore. SMB mounted volumes seem to work correctly, but Windows 2003 or ExtremeZ-IP AFP volumes don't work right anymore.
Applications are not seeing the server volumes correctly because the server names are truncated losing the first letter for the real server name. NetInfo edits help with AFP volumes, but not SMB volumes.
sudo nano -w /private/etc/hosts edits don't seem to do squat either.
Does anyone else have these (or some) of these issues?
Thanks for your input, it's truly appreciated.

    Kris,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
That is not normal. Though what you had was not a "blue screen of death." It might have been one of the issues outlined by this article even though it is said for 10.3.9 or earlier:

If you want to upgrade again for any specific need, see my FAQ:

And if that doesn't help, please post a new topic telling us what you tried at this link:

P.S. Please to any other posters here, this thread was not really a poll of asking for 10.4.6 problems. It is a thread to try and solve some AFP issues that our friend Vipir had with his system. If you have suggestions, please feel free to contribute.

  • Tell us about your large LabVIEW applications!

    Hello all,
From time to time, I've heard non-LabVIEW users describe LabVIEW as a development tool that can't be used to create and manage large applications. I don't agree with this view because I've seen customers with incredible applications containing large numbers of VIs, but I'd like to learn more from you. What are some of the large applications you've built with LabVIEW? What do these applications do? How big are they (number of VIs, nodes, etc.)? How did you manage the development of these large projects?
Depending on your applications, we may even follow up with you directly to learn more.
    Sincerely,
    Mike Neal

    part two of two
The simplified architecture illustrated in figure 3 shows how the functionality was shared between the CS and the RU and uses a TCP/IP connection to interact. The RU uses its local configuration information to acquire, process, and buffer all PV related readings and events (i.e. alarms, warnings, faults …). The RU also supports a “Security Window” that exposes a set of password protected methods that can be used by the CS to read the “History” buffer and permit configuration modifications.. The “history” buffer was implemented as a “round-robin” buffer capable of storing up to 8000 events without adding additional memory.
For simplification, the illustrated CS design omits the reporting and notification functions.. The “History Poller” (HP) maintains and monitors the state of the TCP/IP connection to each of the configured RUs. As long as the HP has a valid connection to the RU, the buffer is periodically checked for updates. If updates are found, the new information is used to refresh the “Recent History” buffer (used to provide quick access to the PV readings from GUI) and the Database. Once the Database has confirmed the updates have been written, the HP will mark the updates in the “History” buffer as saved. This handshaking ensures that no data is ever lost without being detected.
The CS User Interface allowed authorized users to view the PV history, or review and modify PV configurations. All configuration changes are logged to the Database after being confirmed by an appropriate password.
    Interoperability Solutions
The TCP/IP connection shown in figure 3 was implemented using the “VI-Server” technology. This eliminated the need for all low level TCP/IP development and meant that the original version of the “Security Window” never had to be modified.
The serial compatibility issues were addressed by developing appropriate drivers that ran in the RUs under LV-RT and used the built-in serial ports of the cFP units. The cFP serial ports also were used to control and monitor the handshaking lines for use in the local alarm annunciation (not shown).
The fault tolerance was addressed by using cFP controllers. Compact FieldPoint controllers have the option for backup power supplies. The “handshaking” (described above) used by the HP also allowed the reading of updates from the history buffer in RU to be completely tolerant of communication failures and PC crashes.
Control and monitoring of the local alarm annunciation device used the handshaking lines of one of the PC’s serial ports using NI-VISA. NI-VISA was also utilized to control a voice modem to provide the pager and voice notification functionality. Modules were developed to provide voice and e-mail notifications.
    GUI Solutions
The CS application was designed and written to take advantage of LabVIEW’s web server. This made it possible to provide the full local functionality of the CS to a remote user.
The CS made extensive use of the Tab Control to organize and control access to all of the applications functions. The Tab Control was combined with picture controls to implement a graphical interface that could be customized by the end user to configure the physical location of all PVs. An authorized user could specify a bitmap file as one of ten possible background maps. The state of each PV was illustrated by an icon overlayed on the background map at the configured location. A LabVIEW event was used to detect the mouse position while viewing the maps and provided a “mouse over” feature that used a tip strip to show the current reading and state of the PV. Mouse events were also used to access PV history (left clicking on PV icon) or configuration screens (right clicking on PV icon).
    Summary
The solution described made extensive use of the power, flexibility, and features of LabVIEW, LabVIEW-Real Time and Compact Field Point to provide a fault tolerant, configurable application that is 100% compatible with legacy hardware and meets all other stated requirements. Testing has shown that “attacks” (i.e. power fails, crashes, network outages) on the system impact only the affected device and are completely recoverable.

There seems to be an occasional issue with downloads from the store. They prompt for authorization when they are in fact corrupt/incomplete in some fashion. Try deleting the problem tracks (do not hide from iTunes in the cloud), close iTunes and reopen, go to iTunes Store > Qucklinks > Purchased > Music > Not on this computer. Select a few tracks to download then click the icon that appears at the top-right of the iTunes window.. Untick the box that reads Allow simultaneous downloads. Proceed with the rest of your eligible purchases.
If you still have a problem use the Report a problem links in your account history to contact the iTunes Store support team.

I have a MAC computer with Sync. Was set up under sync Beta. I have an Android phone synced to it that was synced using the pair this device function. It works perfectly. I just got a new Android Tablet and am trying to add it to my sync and it does not seem to have the pair my device function. It insists I log into my sync account. So I try it and it tells me invalid userid/password. I verify and it is the exact email address userid that shows as being my sync account on the MAC. I verify the password on the MAC and it tests out fine. Try the tablet again and invalid.. So I try to reset my password on the tablet and am told my email address/account name does not exist. I just verified it AND Synced my MAC using it!! I have my recovery Key but there is no place to input it into the tablet. There is no place on tablet to enter the link device codes. How can my account be valid and in use on two devices but invalid and nonexistant on the new one? And How do I get the New one to sync with other two?

I DO remember them but Apple chose to put them in Japanese and I can not change the language on Manage my Apple ID so I do not know if I made an error ,it threw me off , it was the wrong question Where did you fly to on your first Aiplane trip ? then I was unable to enter until 8 hours then called Apple Japan 4 times each time threy asked me would you like to speak with an English speaker,I said yes then they told me sorry today is Sunday no English speakers ,but they refused to speak Japanese, then I called 5th time and a kind guy could speak English we were on 1and 1/2 hours he got me to log in but the reset key chain could not be completed still pending.
He said do not mess with that ! then I got a text from somewhere to reset 4 pins suddenly it was very strange I said to him that I got this pin this morning but it said you can use maximum 3 hours it had a UK number and I told him I do not like this and will not enter the code he said do not do it if it is from the UK and then I said to him ok you did a lot to help but we can not go any further ! and we cut of I went back to my computer to re do the ID but I found everything a mess so I call and a stupid sounding Japanese women with a squeaky voice came on I was calm at first and they want your phone number your IMEI number your iPhone serial number date of birth Address email address it takes 10 munutes to check then they ask what are you caling about so I try to explain my keychain is broken or problems with language security questions and can not change my pasword because the security question have failed me so it is ONE BIG HEADACHE AND I START I GET STRESSED she says Do want an ENGLISH speaker ,I say yes ,that guy i talked to earlier but I never got his name and first time I ever talked to him but they said he is not here so I said ok and then she said today is sunday so call back in the morning ,I said ,well ok in Japanese but they make you feel stupid because they do not want to speak Jap@anese with none natives and they are to busy,And they feel that I should not bother them ,then I say that Apple Japan is trying to refuse Apple foreign customers and then she wants to hang up and ask me to visit the shop ,but they are the same I have a very bad time with Apple Japan since they do not discuss software problems or security with customer meaning if you have a problem they ask you to come on a time 20 minutes max so they do hardware test and say you phone is fine then I say no I can not reset my ID they say you must call call centre so I am going around in circles ,When I call English it is usually Australia so if my problem is in Japan surely if do not want me to talk to them in Japanese and they ask me to call Australia but every time my call charge is expensive after asking them is this free because I have Apple care they say yes but when the call goes to Australia 0120 277 535 it might change to paid call so I call then I have to ask is this charging they say we can not give you that information ! so what can I do I have have been at the computer and phone all day on my day off work and in tre week I am so busy and can not use my phone I can not work without it ,this new technology for you ,they can not cope with the fact that the customer have problems yet they do not want to deal with us because they can not solve it and so it shows them to be useless they like to walk around in their cool tee shirts and retro shop but when it comes to functionality we are unwelcome they got the money so do not return because apple is perfect that nothing should go wrong .
But it does somehow my English security answers do not work on a Japanese Question especialy if I did not choose that question I set  up the multiple choice In English and wrote the answers in English or Roman and set them langauge preferences in English, do you really think you can correctly write english name or word in Japanese they write a police patrol car  pato caa パトカア they do not have r and l .So it is my choice to make my security easy for me and as difficult for others to hack. But they also have patororoo choo meaning ' now patrolling ' so why they have pato caa patrol car and patoro patrol and have thousands of Chinese words kanji they can find patrol.
I am getting off the topic but I am at a loss to fix this problem when they hold the keys and i have all the info to verify my ID.
